samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is it worth it? - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

hi
i am planing on geting a samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 they are now selling them at my walmart here in sonora CAthey started selling them in 2012 i been wanting too get one but is it worth it ? i be uesing this for note takeing playing games and web sufeing but i all so been thinking about geting a ipad 4 this is so hard too pick be come they are both selling at$499

I love mine, and I bought it at best buy and got them to price match amazon at $449 for the 16gb, and I woukd have got the 32gb for $499 if the had it in stock.

am going too go a head and get samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has it seems that this tablet can do way way more then what the ipad can
when i got the $ saved up

Do you want simplicity - Ipad, or the ability to customise how you want - Note 10.1.
It essentially comes down to what you want to use the tablet for, remember this is a forum for note 10.1 and opinions will be biased,
I like the fact that with the note I connect it to the PC and don't need to use any other apps to convert my movie files to a compatible format, the same with music, text and apps.... It has a screen thats fine for viewing and the fact it has phone capabilities (N8000) just takes the cake. Throw in the stylus and it just blitzes the competition.
I know someone will yell at me for this BUT, the ipad has a retina screen and IOS6... I hate the fact they locked down the system so hard. It has not had any major makeovers since it 1st came out. It is a simple system that I find limited and boring, hence I have a note 10.1....
Others will probably disagree and I hope it won't degrade into a Apple vs Samsung war but probably will like all these types of threads do.
I'm not saying the ipad is a useless piece of tech but from personal experience with one, I won't be buying it ever....

We have the IPad 3 and the Note n8000 and if you like to customize your device... the note wins hands down. Browsing is so much better, speakers that you can hear and No iTunes dependency I love the note and don't like using the iPad/iPhone and I was an Apple fan for years.

May as well wait for a high resolution version at this point if you don't need 1 now...

This right here. I like being able to download videos straight to the device. I hate iTunes otherwise my wife might have gotten the ipad over the note. And if you use mp4 format, you can multi view with video playing on half the screen

I must again disagree with those that think the s-pen is the only thing that makes this worthwhile. I barely use it, but still love this tab. As I mentioned in another thread, I just spent 9 days in the hospital and this thing performed flawlessly. I used it constantly because they refused to let me sleep. Not a single lock up. Battery life was great. I was great having the extra memory and never having to worry about manually killing any apps. And the few times I did need the pen, it was there.
Yes, you can buy tablets with better resolution screens. But you can't buy one that performs better.

This pretty much sums it up. The Note's only weakness is its display. Not that it's a bad display; color reproduction, contrast, and brightness are all great. But 147 PPI is a bit behind the times and not the best for text. But given a choice between a higher PPI display or all the Note's features (well beyond inking) I'd choose the latter. I think a lot of folks feel the same way.

For the price I think I'd wait until the next generation. Samsung has been dripping hints that they plan on coming out with some new stuff this year.

There will always be something better just around the corner. You can wait till the Note 10.1 version 2 comes out. But at that point version 3 will be just around the corner.
As of today, this is the best tablet available,IMO. I don't see a version 2 coming for at least another 4 months. More likely it will be more like 6 months. But it's all guess work at this point. If you need or want a tablet now, this is the one to go for.

Still a Buyable Device

So NewEgg has a deal on the Galaxy tab currently (30 dollars off plus 50 dollar gift card) and was wondering if it is still something worth buying. Considering the progress made with HC as is, I can only expect it to get better if/when Google releases source.
For the price, is it still something you would buy today?
I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and have no complaints. It gets used way more than my Asus Transformer does. I love the 7" screen, perfect size for me.

Was looking at the transformer too. May I ask why? Is it too big?
Exactly. Try reading a book with a 10" device always seem to need two hands. Typing with both thumbs on the Tab vs finger pecking on the transformer. The size of the 7" is perfect for me.

its worth buying if you can get a deal.
As mentioned above 7" is a major bonus. By implication though it means you really want 3G as well. When I was contracting (and hence moving around, taking a lot of different public transport routes etc.) it was an awesome travel companion. It also makes it a great ereader in a pinch.
Custom ROM it and performance is pretty good, esp. as Samsung's browser is hardware accelerated.
If its going to be sitting on your coffee table w/ wifi though, or the price is comparable to a 'current' honeycomb Tegra 2 10" slab, I'd go honeycomb/dual core. There's not much of an upgrade path for it, honeycomb is going to be an unofficial port (if at all?)
I got mine at a knockdown price and really like it. However I still wouldn't have paid RRP for it (by the same token I'm not paying RRP for transformer etc. or even ipad so duh)

Agreed... pretty easy to find on ebay or CL for $250 or less... picking up another one tomorrow for $200... Almost as good a deal as the HP TP and a lot more clarity about its future, apps, upgradability, etc.
It's still a great device. Is it the newest and latest? Nope. Will it run tons of great apps and be a solid performer for most of your uses? Sure! Now is also the time to snap up cheap discounted cases and other accessories for the 7".
I flashed the Overcome ROM on mine after I was tired of waiting on T-Mobile for the 2.3 update. That's a great ROM. Super battery life, video calling (with FFC working great) via Google Talk, excellent ebook reader, calls over Google Voice with Groove IP, etc etc.
I say this even though I also have the Galaxy 10.1. That's for lazy home use. I can take the 7" with me just about everywhere.

funny, I have the same mindset/usage pattern between my Galaxy Tab and my iPad...
I been hearing great things about the SGS2 so I set aside the cash for it and yesterday went to get it but came back without making the purchase.
When I held it in my hands I just couldnt figure out how the puny screen could be any better than my SGT. Battery life is similar, I can run similar or same applications and both can do depending on what I install from the market. With the custom ROMs my SGT OS is probably higher version, less buggy and smoother than what I would get on the SGS2. Yea there might be some new high tech capabilities but do I need it. Most likely not and at this time don't even know what they are.
So I gave up the idea of going smaller than the 7". Quite a while back I kicked the idea of going bigger than 7". I can still put my SGT in my back pocket or my jacket breast pocket and cary it with me anywhere. Try doing that with anything biger than 7".
For me there is absolutely no good reason to go for anything else for a while.
Yep, still worth buying.

New or used?
I'm looking at buying another used one for $200CDN for my GF. She prefers the Galaxy Tab over the Transformer as well.
I'm thinking about buying 3 of these for the office because of the portability. It would make a great tool for our QC department.
Definitely worth buying. Look at my signature of what I have had and look at which tab is still standing. The 7" form factor is the best. Not to mention this thing plays any video I've thrown at it. Such was not the case for the others tabs.

Should I get a Galaxy Note

I just recently bought a Skyrocket and being that it is SII based, it is a very nice phone. I am still being pulled into the Note though even with the SIII on the horizon. I am looking to hear from the guys who have a Galaxy Note what they think about it and after owning it for a while if they would keep it or trade for something smaller.
Just some FYI, I have been on android since the Aris, I have also owned the, Galaxy S, Thunderbolt, G2x, Moto Droid 2, Sensation, and xoom, all of which have been rooted and ROMed. I consider myself well educated and experienced in android phones.
I've had my note since November and can honestly say there's still not a phone on the horizon I'd trade in my NOTE for. Love it like a baby!

Same here...I bought my Note Back In November Last Year and there's no going back...waiting patiently to see what samsung does for version 2....heard rumors they want to make it a 6.5" screen...I say to keep it at 5.3 or 5.5 but bump the ram up to 2gb, use the tegra 3 quad core processor, 12mp with xeon flash back camera, 2mp front camera, official support for micro sd 64gb, two micro sd slots, dual sim slots, and a whole lotta other niceties to make this phone the king again...Ps I don't care if the price is set at 999 for all these features...Im buying...rofl...jk..seriously

i know the feeling that he has!
After watching that video I feel very much the same.
Not quite with a smartphone but I remember going from my 17" 1280x1024 LCD to a 24" 1920x1200 and it was WOW. After using the 24" and then looking at the 17" I just couldn't look at the smaller screen.
Even though I have not owned a smartphone other than the Note I can not see myself going to a smaller phone.
So my next phone will be another Note hopefully.
I really like it. But it really depends on the person.
So my recommendation is go to a store where they sell them and look at a demo or something.

I still have an SGS II and the wife loves hers. She doesn't want a Note. I love using the Note and I am still amazed at people's surprise when seeing the phone. They don't know what it is. Most people then want one.
I will be buying an International S3 when they start appearing used to see of the mid size screen between the s2 and note will be a good trade off, If so the SGS2 will go on Ebay and the Note will then be relegated to the back up position. If not the S3 will go back on Ebay and I keep the S2 until the Note II.
I don;t find the size prohibitive at all. I am used to using two hands on it and use it like a Notepad. Carrying it in my pockets is easy ( I would not want to put a case on it though).

As I posted earlier was thinking about selling my note. Well someone offered me $350 cash locally so I took them up and went to Sam's club and bought their last 16gb Google tablet to hold me over until the note 2 in a few months. So far its pretty cool.
I will still be checking here daily to keep up with development and see who is moving to the 2. Plus I've made some good international pals here as well.

I actually ask myself the same question. "Is that big purchase of the new device justified for a sake of some improvements (but not so overly dramatic)?".
I realise Note2 will come with 4 core processor, slightly bigger screen and perhaps Spen functionality ironed out and maybe better battery life. But how much all these improved features will affect my daily use. The more I think about it the less I'm convinced that I should switch...

None of the features that have leaked are worthy for NOTE users to switch. I mean sure from a Gnex or an S3... but the NOTE is still one of the most advanced smartphones out there.

Completely agree. I bought my Note 2-3 months ago, and sure i'd like to have Note 2, but lets be honest, throwing loads of money away just to get quad-core cpu ( which i probably won't even notice in my daily use ) is just...well...not very smart, unless you have a lot of cash you can spend for whatever you like, then i guess there's no discussion here. Will definitely buy Note 2, but probably in a year or so.

If you don't need the stylus and/or windowing interface of the 10.1, go with the N10. I don't need a 300ppi display, but I read that the 1280x800 (or thereabouts) display of the 10.1 is rather middling. Besides, in terms of software updates, I can't help but think the 10.1 will be left behind, while in addition to AOSP updates the N10 will have dozens of options for themed ROMs. Oh, and ignore the benchmarks -- for normal browsing, news/rss reading, media consumption, etc the N10 will be superior.

That was the first updates, that's been fixed long ago, Note 2 like experience now.
I personally don't care about the screen but will still get a Nexus 10, already Own a note 10.1 and an S3.
Right I have the same dilemma.
I guess you have to decide what you want from the tablet, great res screen or the functionality of the stylus.
I've just been into Tesco to have a play and to check out the screen. I've decided to ignore the screen specs and just decide whether it looks good enough for what I want at the price, and the answer is YES IT IS.
You need to see it working and check out the pre-loaded images and videos and just decide if the screen is an issue. For me it looks fine.
You're getting a very powerful device with a unique functionality for £258!
I have a question though that I am hoping the Note 10.1 owners can help me with. I noticed a little lag with the stylus when I first started writing a note. Is this an issue? I wondered if it is a case of there being a bit of a delay to begin with but the device caught up once you started writing. Any feedback on this please?
Thanks

I love my nexus 7, its the most up to date google software device running jelly bean. Its pretty smooth on stock software, i SUGGEST the 32gb model, i have it and it was 269$ total that was with ny 8% sales tax. They are selling it pretty cheap it take them about 180$ to make it and they sell it for not much of a profit. THIS IS PURELY GOOGLE software. No ASUS overlay like cellphones or anything. Its great it and the BEST tablet for the money.
Cons: No rear camera, no external SD slot, on stock software you cannot view landscape mode on homescreen and do not purchase from gamestop have not heard good things as in LCD problems and such. I suggest staples, walmart, or playstore.
Hope this helps!

Buy it, you'll have no regrets. I'm sure your dad will love it, just like we love our N7 devices. It's one of the best tablets on the market.
Honestly, I think the N7 is just about the best $200 you can spend as far as technology goes.
Mine is basically defect-free. That hardware is really nice. It's a convenient size, great for reading, email and web-browsing.
However, only you know your dad. If you think he'd like a tablet, the N7 is definitely a great one!
I found this to be ironic since I bought an electric fireplace heater AND nexus 7 recently

I don't know your dad's age but I did something similar I'll describe below.
My step-dad is 61. He's never been real big on technology, he likes using it, for example he's a movie buff and loves home theater stuff, but he really doesn't care at all to know how it works or why it works. He's the kind of person who mysteriously ends up with the strangest toolbars ever on his computer when all he was trying to do was type something in notepad.
When he saw my first tablet, which was when the ipad launched originally, he fell in love with having a big screen and touch interface. So I got him one for Christmas and half expected him to use it for a little while and get frustrated or bored and shelve it longterm. But to my surprise he took to it with no problems and lived on it.
Fast forward a few years to the Nexus 7 launch. A few weeks after the Nexus 7 launched (I bought at staples before the pre order fiasco prior to launch day) he had surgery, heart surgery actually. He had some minor complications and ended up staying in the ICU a few weeks instead of a few days. There was no TV where he was.
His surgeon really stressed to us that he couldn't be working from the ICU, so his own ipad was out of the question. I went and bought a case for the Nexus 7 and then loaned it to him in the hospital. He usually likes big screens and large print, but he says the 7 inch screen is perfect for him and he really liked the Jelly Bean OS and interface a lot. Now he's begging for his own Nexus 7 after using those for a few weeks.
When I'm caught up financially I will buying him a Nexus 7 for sure. Even for a "bull in a china shop" type person who's not a techie, the Nexus 7 is one of the best overall devices I think you could give as a gift. The tablet and jellybean just work, and work great, and it's not much of a learning curve.
Just buy it. It's a greatest device for its money with powerful cpu+gpu plus the grate service support (hope you never needed). The only bad thing is that the glass is not gorilla glass but just Corning class so you must be gentle with the screen.
