Here is some more info

Will this be open source?
Does android finally have competition?
Who thinks that when this phone(s) comes out they should make forums for them?

Not serious competition. Canonical is a very small company with limited resources compared to Google. Shuttleworth has some Money but its small potatoes compared to Google and Apple. Also, this has been in the works for at least a year now, and still no manufacturers or carriers on board. Until it gets manufacturers releasing out of the box devices its no more competition than most non-stock roms. Remember, when Google announced android they already had people on board. The fact Ubuntu haven't yet tells me alot.

I think they need to time to come famous like android, because everyone know when we talk about the OS you need many things like applications, developers, devices.... But I wish to try Ubuntu phone OS soon!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2

i hope there would be a phone, that would let us install different types of operating system.

correct me if I'm wrong but they kinda have the apps and developers, it is a Linux after all, with all the Linux capabilities and the ability to install deb files, compile source and so on.
so apps and developers are not a problem.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

There is more information about they don't use java? that would be revolutionary for all android devices.

Promising up-coming platform
it was sort of great surprise to me and also great news for the new year,
i am really looking forward in updates about UOS "Ubuntu OS" and most important is the they will provide full support to current and up coming android devices ,
i wish the management lunch "Ubuntu Development forum" section since i believe it would be a long run for the Ubuntu but days are passing by fast and UOS will be great opponent for android and the sinking ship of IOS

Ubuntu OS hmmm lookin good to me would use it as dualboot if possible!

Google or Microsoft will buy it and integrate with their own OS. (in case of any competition from Ubuntu!)

They can easily sue canonical to death. Almost everything to do with phones is now patented.
Sent from my GT-I5500 using xda app-developers app

They shouldn't need to sue, it is a great idea and it will destroy all the competition. I think Google should partner with Linux. They would come out with the greatest thing ever.

Cheap thread . Sources are out middle of July, Jelly's faster and spicked with more features than ICS. Shouldn't be hard for our devs to update, but it'll take several weeks till the sources are out.
Well in all seriousness, this "project butter" featured in 4.1 is looking very appealing to me. If this Jelly Bean OS all goes well, I might not have to buy a new phone for maybe another year?

nexus 7 tablet is reasonably future proofed I think btw.except for maybe the ram.

Yet another proof that upgradind sgs to ics wouldnt be impossible because of specs, but major economic waste-why upgrading 2yr old phone to latest android when there are already 2 newer device versions out....there are lots of work with porting such a thing, they would waste lots of money because sgs ist best seller for looooong time now

Ubuntu for Phones

Ubuntu for phones has just been announced today for mobile devices.
Ubuntu for phones website
Ubuntu for phones keynote presentation (Skip to 6:30 for the Mobile OS)
What does that mean for us? Ubuntu for phones supports the full range of ARM processors and also fully supports Android device drivers. Which means Ubuntu for phones should be easy to install on a multitude of android devices including the DINC2.
What does this mean for Devs? You can code in native C and C++ and there is no Dalvik VM to limit what you can and can't do.
We'll be getting a glimpse soon, as the Ubuntu OS will be made available for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in the coming weeks.
That looks so sweet
I will keep my eye out for this one!

From what I understand from reading a few articles about this is that the 2014 date is for manufacturers to ship it pre-installed on the phone, whereas it is released next month for the Galaxy Nexus whether it be the source code or a prebuilt image, but as it uses the android kernel and drivers so I wouldn't be surprised to see unofficial ports in the next few months for many of the high end devices including the Note 2.
Why a fail? I'm interested in seeing it! And playing around with it! It looks pretty cool. I'm sure when Android first came out everyone thought the same thing, but look at how it flourished.
Sounds awesome to me. They are clearly struggling to get OEMs on board, so I think releasing images to let the modding community have a play is a great way to build momentum and gain feedback.
It's how MIUI got started, and I hope it works for Ubuntu.
With a phone as powerful as the Note 2, it's a shame it can't run anything more than android for docking & use with monitor/keyboard/mouse.

Looks very nice! I have been following there progress for sometime...They really need to get this O/S on board with OEM's in 2013, but like said I am sure we will see ports soon, hopefully for the N2!

Ubuntu Phone OS on N7000

Hey folks, I'm keen to start work porting the gnexus image for Ubuntu to the N7000 when it's released later this week. Is anyone else keen to join this effort?
While very familiar with the linux commandline, servers, desktop linux, and flashing my phone, I haven't compiled much code before and am unsure where to start. I would appreciate any advice you might have.
Looking forward to getting this os running on our original notes.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Deleted sorry wrong post.
I would love to see some support here. Push!
I'm presuming you're going to need to build an unbuntu compatible kernel for the note, mobile devices don't tend to work in the same way as desktops, so the pretty much universal kernel model used on the desktops don't work too well here. (size being the major consideration).
Not really looked into what they are doing, I'm presuming they will release source under gpl, so at least you will be able to diff a standard gnex build and the ubuntu. You can then use that as a basis to rebuild for the note.
"Porting" an image if that's all they release is going to end up quite messy.
EDIT according to techradar they will release source http://www.techradar.com/news/softw...galaxy-nexus-nexus-4-coming-next-week-1131567
But doesn't it run on android kernel without any modifications?

You think every android phone runs on the same kernel? Think again.
It's always a possible that they will use an Android kernel for the gnexus or n4 builds, but it's unlikely, as Android has some features that don't play too nicely with a mainstream Linux build.
Not seen this yet, nor code for it, so can't say exactly what they are doing yet.

See what happens when it comes out then, but would seem from the information Canonical is presenting that they are using standard android kernels. Will be interesting to see.
