anyone else have buffering issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just got it for x mas and have not rooted so its not anything with that but when watching HULU or youtube (HQ, low seems okay) this thing seems to buffer constantly drives me nuts as my KF (first gen) doesnt do it at all.
anyone else with these issues, will rooting and roming help?
thanks

Try a hard reset hold the power button for 30 seconds

Youtube is painfully slow for me as well in HD. I learned that watching the video in the Chrome browser actually works and it does not buffer. Try a speedtest in the closest town near you to ensure that it is not a hardware issue.

bigger issue is hulu honestly. between commericals it has buffered to all out stopping and blaming my wireless when my GF's ipad is fine.
Im starting to worry the signal strength on the nexus7 isnt as strong as even my old kindle or mine is defective.

Might be your ROM, I remember one old one on my phone would only play low quality for some reason

[Q] A500 or iPad???

Hi there, i have some question wanna ask you
I m just confusing to buy a new tablet. Nothing to talk about the iPad2, all good, but I hate to sync with Itune, and cant jail break ritenow.
So i m looking at some Android Tablet, and A500 is very good in my request such as: full USB port, HDMI....
But I read some review, and a lot of people told me A500 have a problem with Wifi connection, is it real? it can not connect to wifi if the router is far as 15ft Please give me the answer T_T
Another stuff is app. I used to read the Comic and Manga in my Android phone using Manga Watcher, is it have a version for Android 3.0??? Any1 testing it?
Are there some apps from 2.2-2.3 can use in 3.0 with full screen display?
If everything is good, i will buy A500, cause i love the usb port ^^ can plug the usb drive to it and transfer data fast ^^

So the a500 dont have any wifi problem? Cause i saw a lot of review in bestbuy about this problem

I never even considered a tablet before Iconia. If it ain't got usb it's nothing more than a useless toy for me.
As for iPad...
I use perfect viewer to read manga.
My wifi is good, I haven't had any problems but lets hear from others regarding wifi.
as far as my wifi experience, not as good as my Archos tablet, but better than my tablet/cellphones (HTC tytn ii, HTC raphael, LG expo)
Some reviews are legit, but others are just passing what they heard as fact/fanboys for other tabs, which all it does is make the a500 look bad for no reason
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Wifi is good for me. Get the iconia insted of the "fantastical and magical new device".
I had to return my tablet because of the wifi. The problem wasn't poor reception on mine. It was because the tablet would not finish any large wifi transfers, and even some small ones like market apps gave it trouble.
I even waited for the update to be realeased and installed before returning the tab. Unfortunately that didn't help at all.
None of those issues are present with the unit I got as an exchange. And now I am happy as I can be with my a500.
Also I have had pretty good luck with apps. Only a few that I have tried don't work at all. Some will work but not in full screen. But most apps are just fine.
I've never owned an Apple anything so I can't speak to the differences. I do know that the a500 does most everything that I would want a tablet to do. GPS is a little wonky but there is a fix on the forums for that.
Good luck with whichever pad that you choose.
good wifi here
My netgear g/n router is located down in the middle of our basement where we have our wireless printer station set up.we have a very large lot that Liu home sits on.I can get two bars on wifi anywhere on my property.even way out back prob 300 or so feet.I have noticed. That even my neighbor that has a teenager thats friends with my son has same wifi router about 1/2 block away I see there network as well as others. Always two bars. So to me the wifi isssue is the notification people see is misleading. When I leave my home going down street it never looses the two bars just disconnects.
is this just me or has anyone else noticed this.I know I should try a 3rd party app to test but it works OK to me so not care much about the notification.

I've had not a single problem with my wifi, works great everywhere I go.
My galaxy also has a supposed wifi and GPS problem. I don't need to say how my friends can't use that one bar at all in places where I get none.
Only time I've had problems with my A500's WiFi was in a spot where even my Droid doesn't connect all the time. I've been able to connect at work to a hotspot 1/2 the building away (same floor).
so far, the wifi is good for most of people in xda so the last thing i want to ask is about watching HD movie, both of 720p and 1080p. My friend show me the clip in youtube that fully review about the A500, and it showed A500 have a problem to play HD movie.
Only can play HD movie with Rock Player but have some delay, others app such as Mobo can not play. Is there something wrong with Tegra2 in HD movie? Because my friend using Xoom have same problem?
Ah, sorry, and 1 more thing Can we use A500 like USB drive when connect with PC? Cause I really hate to sync using some software, just want drag and paste, thats all
I have no idea about in-browser HD. Could be android, could be flash, could be acer.
AFAIK tegra 2 was said to be HD capable so 3.1 might fix this.
The youtube app should display HD properly and most formats should just work.
For jerky formats like .mkv some players *might* do.
wifi is good in my iconia, but yeah, my desire has much better wifi receiver ...

Gaming and Netflix are a pain on this tablet

Trying to simply select a show in the Netflix app with this tablet is a complete chore. The new UI combined with the crappy hardware makes it almost impossible. Everything seems to move at about 1 frame per second when scrolling through your instant queue or the list of categories. It takes way too long to find what I'm looking for. That said, the actual video playback is fine. But this problem seems to persist in other apps. I can't play Tiny Tower because using the elevator after buildling 20+ floors is a choppy mess and takes twice as long as it should if the game ran smoothly. There's similar problems in games like TowerDefense and news apps like Pulse, where the tablet struggles to load anything. The Play Store is laughable, because once you start downloading anything the entire thing locks up until it's finished and it seems to have no ability to multitask whatsoever.
Why does this tablet exist? The hardware is ****, the price point is equally ****ty (I have the 10.1 so it's $400), and Samsung doesn't seem to care that ICS is a choppy mess with the specs. I'm incredibly disappointed.
I was thinking the same thing until I installed CM9
I was thinking the same thing until I installed CM9.
I was actually considering the Nexus 7, but am quite satisfied with the Galaxy Tab 2 7 now. With Cyanogenmod's announcement about CM10 and Jelly Bean I am pretty excited about the future of this tablet too.

Odd, I have a great experience with mine and it is just rooted stock. I traded in my asus tf300 for this and so far am quite happy with its snappy performance and colorful display.
Also, your language doesn't really help nor is it allowed. Having an angry rage post on a forum really isn't going to help anyone out so I would suggest calming down next time before posting on xda developers.
Recommend you do some research b4 you just start complaining about the device and software . I'm rooted and stock factory ROM and have no complaints. Get Titanium Backup and freeze or uninstall the apps you don't use (I froze them ) and the tab is now as fast and snapy as it should b . Also no problems with Netflix

My only experience is limited to my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It is completely stock.
Netflix works perfectly and I do not notice any lag when browsing for movies.
During playback ,the video looks nice, much better than my iPad 2 and HP
Touchpad(Classicnerd ICS rom), but that's probably because the other two are
10-inch tablets.
I plan to try CM9 once my micro sd card arrives in the mail, but I'm not optimistic.
But you guys really don't get any lag whatsoever in the Netflix app? I'm using stock unrooted and I can barely scroll through the different rows; it practically locks up. The 7.0 and 10.1 have the same specs, right? I wonder if anyone else with the 10.1 has this problem.
@Darunion: Why did you trade your TF300 for the Tab 2, out of curiosity? I've been considering the exact opposite. And I apologize if a couple of s-words offended you somehow; I know we're all adults here but if it's indeed against the rules I will refrain next time. I'm not "raging" at all, but I just thought those adjectives worked best when describing this very frustrating tablet. /firstworldproblems
I have the 7 and haven't had any lag with cm9 and almost non existent lag on stock. I have a friend with the 10 and he can search/play with nextflix just fine.
I nor my friend have ever seen the tab lock up when downloading from the play store either.
Sounds like you got a bad tab more then anything.

Found a video that shows what I'm talking about, albeit on the TF300, which suggests that this might not be a problem specifically for this tablet but rather the app's lack of tablet optimization. I'm finding it even laggier than shown here and sometimes I can't scroll at all (it also FC's regularly), but I may have been too quick to blame the Tab 2's hardware. This might just be an inherent disadvantage for Android tablets, and I'm experiencing similar sluggishness in similar apps.

I saw a review on the nexus 7. It wasnt laggy, but it wasnt as quick as the galaxy nexus with jellybean because of the companion core and the lack if iptimization in the os. With the galaxy tabs on jellybean itll be a lot quicker. That optimization may be fixed too, it could have just been the stupid companion core doing most of it.

I use Netflix on tablets, phones, PC, and PS3.
PS3 is hooked up to a Panasonic 1080p projector
with a 133" Da-Lite screen. Netflix works best
on this setup... but it's probably because the PS3
has the best graphics capability?
However, I enjoy watching Netflix on my Samsung
Galaxy Nexus(phone) and my Galaxy Tab 2 7.0(tablet)
as well. They all work equally well, depending on
the quality of VZW 4G and/or wi-fi.

Netflix working awesome on Galaxy Nexus, Nook Color, Galaxy Tab2 7, PS3, Roku, laptops and desktops. When the competition fails Netflix has always succeed for me. Are there hiccups? Sure and they are mostly associated with the UI but you can't be all things to all people and devices. Thing is NOBODY comes as close as Netflix.
I have been using Netflix on my 7-inch Tab 2 for over a month. It's really smooth and I do not notice any lag at all.

YouTube buffering a lot

i think its a youtube thing. ive noticed on my evo lte, nexus 7, and my ridiculously over powered computer all on a 25meg line that it will only load so far ahead on videos and sometimes end up buffering. up until a month ago ish i would click a video and the whole thing would be loaded in a few seconds
My YouTube app gets stuck buffering constantly. I tried dumping and reinstalling but get the same problem. I remedied it by using a browser. No lag or buffering.

The new youtube app suck. When you browsing in portrait mode, you only get one single column for (info, related and comments). The old youtube app 4.0.23 have 3 different tabs for each one.

It stops for good until you click the hd button. It will then start back up in standard definition and freeze again down the line somewhere. I thought I had it fixed by just using the browser but that freezes as well. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason why because sometimes vids play flawlessly.

I got this too..doesn't matter which video..it all buffer! It seems like the video download is much slower n the YouTube app. I have tried different wireless router s and even set a test one where my N7 is the ONLY device on the network. I have 18mbps line.
Got to the point I stopped using the N7 and just used my Note. Strangely, this issue doesn't happen with my old iPad 2.
I have a strong belief (in my case at least) that the N7 is picky about certain routers... At home my YouTube app is an absolute dog, unusable anytime - thus resorting to the Chrome browser which is ok for non-HD. However, at school and a number of friends houses, it works like a charm. So I've come to that conclusion of something to do with the router compatibility...

Necro-bump
Just wanted to necro-bump this and say that it's still a problem (despite tons of app updates since this thread).
Original nexus 7 constantly buffers via the youtube app if HD is selected. If I turn off HD, the video doesn't buffer nearly as much. My network is not the problem; I can watch HD videos on youtube with my computer just fine (no buffering issues). Even SD videos in the youtube app buffer, whereas if I load youtube.com in chrome on my N7 and watch the exact same video in SD as what I was trying to watch in the app, there is zero pausing to buffer (and I can see the buffer bar constantly grows).
I am also of the idea that the tablet is sensitive to router types; I don't know why this is, but wifi reliability on my nexus 7 went down at home after I flashed our router to dd-wrt firmware (all other devices on our home network have been the same). Haven't investigated this further. All router settings seem to be identical as before the flash.
Why I can stream HD videos on netflix (and other apps) just fine on my N7, but youtube chokes...it's a youtube thing--either the app, or something on their backend. It's frustrating as hell, and despite the nice form-factor, I'm regretting getting this nexus 7 as much as I regretted trying the KFHD...lol.

necro-bump as well i guess.
Still a problem running 4.4.4 on my rooted nexus 7 (2012) and latest youtube app. The thing is like 2 days old and I have no other apps installed yet.
The weird thing is that rebooting the device "fixes" the problem for like 5 minutes. After those 5 minutes it goes into super slow mode again and starts buffering at like 1mbit or less for 720p quality. Most of the time it plays 2s, buffers 5s, plays another 2s, buffers 5s again, plays another till I feel the urge to just smash the table into the ground.
It's like it forgets to buffer while playing the content it has already buffered.
Incredibly aggrevating considering this problem is almost 2 years old now and there are multiple google group posts about it, some with 100s of entries. All the replies from google are "alright, thanks for the feedback, we passed it on" or "thanks for the feedback, there is a new update, tell us if it is fixed"...

[Q] Netflix flicker

When I am streaming a Netflix video the screen jumps/flashes/flickers but only for a millisecond. After a few weeks of enjoying this tablet I finally nailed down what is actually happening. One frame of the video from <minute past, reappears on the screen; just for that millisecond. (I am not using millisecond in its exact technical length.)
Now this may be happening at other times but last evening is when I recognized the frame which I had already seen, reappear within that millisecond; it may be appearing in other venues too but I don't recall such.
Anyone else?
I have the same issue. Very annoying. Combined with the random crashing issue, I'd say that the Nexus needs a few more app/software iterations.
I was having the same issue when I was watching supernatural on it, it scared me for a sec when it did that, as I was watching a scary episode but yeah this only happens with netflix. Because earlier I streamed a cricket match for 8 hours straight on mx video and it was fine.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda premium
I watched a lot of Netflix this weekend while traveling (tethered to my phone). Never once did my screen flicker.
I have seen this as well. I wonder if its got something to do with the Netflix app itself because other video apps don't exhibit this phenomenon. Also in stock ROM I never experienced this but I sure am on CM 10.1 M1.

Cast Moto X Screen to Chromecast

Cast Moto X screen to Chromecast!

As mentioned prior, I was able to hack my build.prop, to convince Chromecast that my phone is a Nexus 5... After a reboot, the CastScreen option populated and just started working.
Initial thoughts... While it is still in beta, I figured with all the hype casting would be pretty polished by now.
Not so much.
The Chromecast struggles to produce video, and seems to heavily compress (or take a long time) to render anything. Photos do fairly well, but streaming video from phone to TV is totally useless.. I also recognized early on that the Chromecast doesn't seem to support 5g wireless, which would likely help a great deal with throughput.
I have seen a few YouTube videos showing better casting results, but using true Nexus gear. To be fair, there's a chance the Moto X isn't officially supported yet because Google may want to push all of this heavy lifting through our GPU.
Oh well, always fun trying new things.

One last thing...I encourage others to post their experiences here
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Premium HD app
I discovered this build.prop edit on my own yesterday and tested it out. I noticed the heavy compression at first but things smooth out after a few moments. Quality seemed to be fairly good from what I could see. I'm I've got an 802.11ac router really close to my tv that my phone was connected to on 5ghz (though my chromecast was connected on 2.4ghz n). So maybe that had something to do with it. Playing sonic dash showed smooth clean graphics, but the latency was just a tad too slow to rely on the TV as a screen and the phone as a controller.
Watching MLB.TV quality definitely suffered a little and wasn't quite as smooth. Perhaps that was because I was streaming so there was data going back and forth to the router.
Also, note there is another post on XDA with an app someone threw together to enable mirroring on any device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...experimental-enable-mirroring-device-t2812193
I would guess this performance will be on par with casting a tab from Chrome on your PC. I know that experience sucks.

Wired I don't have as much of a problem but wireless I do. Then again there are many factors but all network related. Chromecast in relation to the router, wireless devices currently using the bandwidth on the router etc...
Since most people are not hardwired to their network I think its a valid post to talk about wireless tab casting especially since you will be casting with your phone wirelessly.
I'll try this on my moto x today. I'm casting to Chromecast from my nexus 7 and it works good. Not a lot of latency , buffering or anything. Quick and all, so I'll compare it with this hack on the moto x..

first open hot spot from any other android mobile . after that connect moto x wifi with that hotspot mobile after that you will easily uese miracast in moto x 2013... screen mirroring
.
You don't need to do this anymore. The Chromecast app now supports mirroring from any device via a button in the app.
