What reasons are you getting/(rid of) the Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says, for what reasons are you getting the nexus 4? Or even getting rid of the nexus 4?
Could it be because of the lack of memory? (Is 16 not enough, and is it a pain always connecting it to your laptop/desktop to change anything on it?
There's no real thread for all the good and bad points of this device.
I personally have yet to actually get this phone, and was put off by it's lack of usb capabilities particularly with a ps3 controller. But earlier I discovered it's possible to connect a ps3 pad to this phone purely by bluetooth, so I now again want this phone as soon as google sort out the stock and shipping problems.
What's your view on it?

Reason to get it, Cheap, Pure google. Latest updates for years.
Reasons to get rid of it such as only 16GB storage, fragile, no 4G are just stupid as everyone is well aware of this BEFORE they purchase the phone.

my phone just fell from the recliner onto a rug which is sitting on a hardwood floor. its pretty much an 18" drop. that popped my glass loose. i can now barely squeeze the bottom and i get a clickin noise. 2 days after my 15 day return.
the nexus is an absolute hunk of junk and not worth the savings. way too many things to list on how cheap this phone really is.

Unlucky about that.
You're one of many that's complained about how crap the glass screen is. I've tried looking for drop tests on youtube while in the case but there doesn't seem to be anything. Most of the cases look dead flimsy as well.
As you say about the casing of the phone itself is perhaps a downside to it, but not one enough to deffer me from it, a good case should right that flaw (I hope).

Updates isn't really that much of an issue with cyanogenmod only being behind the official release by no time really.
Fraigility is a concern but as I said above a good case should right this flaw. I don't see 4G as a massive thing at this moment in time. It's fairly new in the UK, and massively overpriced comapred to standard 3G/+

So despite it's obvious flaws you still love the phone?

I got the nexus 4 (first batch) , then trade it with an iPhone 5, then got the nexus 4 again. I think its the current best android phone besides the note 2. However I saw someone with a Nokia lumia 920 today and I was blown away. I'm gonna give it a try.

My mate just got the note 2 and reckons it's better which I don't mainly due to it's huge size. Alright for a woman carrying it in a purse but not a man wearing jeans lol.
But I digress, How come you got rid of the first batch nexus 4? Yellow screen problems (Over I hope)? I've yet to see the Lumia in person, How is it?

yah. the glass didnt break. it popped loose. and when i say pooped loose... its loose to the point that it 'creaks' when you squeeze it. i am trying not to continue messing with it... i know it will only get worse as time goes by. i am seriously thinking about getting insurance through square trade or whatever it is so i dont have to worry about it. i know i will be replacing a broken screen eventually.

Thats odd, can you not force it back in by sqeazing all the sides down? Least you don't have a huge dirty crack down it.
I've never really thought about insurance, but then again this will be the most expensive phone I'll buy to date when I get this.
Are they good prices I don't know?
Will it not be covered by your house insurance for when **** really hits the fan?

I am done with Samsung tablet products

Ok, this is my 3rd device and all of them have had dirt under the screen. I am so pissed right now.
Very frustrating, but a problem with all manufacturers. I was unable to get an Ipad 2 because every one I tested had bad light leak (at least 4 units). The BB playbook had dust, dirt or bad pixil on my first 3 units. My first tab 2 had a spec of dust. The second appears perfect, but I'm determined not to run tests until I find something!

Have you considered a device with an AMOLED screen? The Galaxy Tab 7.7 has one. The technology sandwiches the touchscreen and the display together - no room for particulates.

its like the iphone antenna. not a huge deal (i had one) but once people read about it then they had to hold it that way and then start complaining. its how the particles under the samsung screen is going to turn out. people spend $400 expecting $800 worth of product
I realize that it may seem crazy to have a post about this but I think it is also something that after so many you have to raise a question. I mean you are spending over 400 dollars for these things, I think you should get some quality. Yes I can let this go and I am as I am using the device.
I am just saying that how many of these are out there and when does the manufacturer have to start taking responsibility for it.
Just looked at my screen, and there isn't any dirt under it. Don't remember seeing any dirt or dust under the screen at any display models that I've seen in stores either, so that makes 4 - 7" and 3 - 10" tablets that I've looked at without any screen issues (besides just needing wiped off).
I have never had dirt under a screen in a device. I am sorry OP that you are having this issue.

Just bought a tab 2 10" for the wifes birthday - no dust/dirt problems here, she loves it.
Terry
I agree with the dust problem. I have seen this problem on iphone 3gs, iphone 4, ipad 1, ipad 2, galaxy tab p1000, tab 7.7, and many other models...
It is really hard to find a device without dust. Latest screen technology get rides of the backlight bleeding problem, specially the super amoled screen, but the problem is that the dust gets inside between the touch panel and the screen during the manufacture process, so you won't be able to avoid it...
It is a shame that such an expensive piece of hardware gets that problem just because they don't care when they are manufacturing the pieces... :S
I have returned dozens of devices because of this fault... I don't understand why people return devices with dead pixels but not with dust under the screen... the visual effect is the same or even worse with dust!
Its just a tablet not a scalpel, just a mass produced product. You're lucky you don't see any Chinese dung beetles under the glass. Lol.

This device does not cost over $400.
That said, mine is perfect. No dirt, nothing.
I'm just grateful mine didn't come with any dirt. And to back the OP, if I spend anywhere near $400 then I want to see some quality. Less than perfect usually won't cut it, not if I am shelling out that kinda money. I want to get the best bang for my buck... I have seen this complaint in other forums and if I got a tablet and it had dust under the screen, I would certainly return it for another as well, not settle for a device that has a flaw, especially knowing some people are buying them without this flaw...

I would LOVE an iPhone 5...if it ran Android

I hate Apple, and I always will. I will never buy from Apple or support it at all...but I really wish there where Android phones that had the same hardware quality as Apple. I love my Atrix, but squeeze it, it creaks. The back is flimsy, the camera lens scratches and its all soo plasticity, and a lot of Android phones are like this. All plastic, creaky, and over all compare to Apples phones, just horribly cheep feeling. I love Android an would never move to Apple, but I still would really love an Android phone that matched iPhone 4/4s or especially iPhone 5 quality. Just don't think it'll ever happen though, sadly.
That's why hardware-wise, Apple will always dominate in that category.
I don't care what anyone says otherwise. Take off your green colored glasses if you disagree.

This is ignoring the fact that even Apple products have their flaws. You all seem to think that all Apple products are perfect hardware-wise, when in reality they all have problems. Nothing's perfect, and you all need to get that through your heads.

If they dominate the category so much, why is it that 45%ish of iphones I see people with are cracked all to hell? Nokia, they continue to have arguably the best build quality in the industry. Counterpoint-- the only thing apple does that gives the impression that they have the ability to create a solid phone is that they only produce one product. Given that fact, they're phone should be much better in every area than it actually ever is.

The part that cracks is maybe 3$ to replace online. 2 screws at the bottom. People need to put cell phones in cases regardless because no cell phone without a case is going to withstand a 4 foot drop without some damage.

No thanks, I don't want my nice looking phone to be hidden beneath some ugly case. I actually had a case on my Atrix once. Broke in 2 weeks. The Atrix itself has actually taken more damage that that case without much harm. I probably just had a bad case, though. It sure was ugly.
Atrix is actually a very nice compromise between aesthetics and tank phone. Part of the process when I pick a phone is how it looks and feels. A case changes that. Its not about looking cool or showing off. That implies I give a damn what others think.. I digress. Be ninja. Your phone is too important to drop, not to mention too damned expensive, but atrix can take it.
I've seen people holding cracked iPhones too.. usually they're also holding a joint and a skateboard. Or five things in each hand while simultaneously trying to make a call. can't blame that on apple fellas

There's a big difference between a completely shattered screen vs a small flake of paint coming off of my phone from a 4 foot drop. I had an iphone 3g that the screen was completely shattered and the back shell cracked from tripping over a rock and my iphone flung. Had the same thing happen with my atrix and just a lil paint came off (and my atrix bounced and hit the side of my house) neither had cases.... moral of the story drunk txting is bad
But yeah anyway, iphones dont have the best track record when it comes to hardware durability and I want to know where you're buying a screen shipped for $3 that's as good of quality as the origional... and to your comment about the iphone 4g, I've had a sales rep sit on his brand new iphone 4gs and it shattered his screen (again no case was on the phone). I've done that several times with my atrix and a nokia with no issues.

This is what I thought until I dropped the phone from chest hight onto a concrete car park floor. Gorilla glass is structurally very tough and flexible but doesn't like impact and will break along micro scratches caused by leaving your phone face down on any gritty surface. I just got a black tpu case that has a nice lip around the screen edges but is otherwise nice and discrete. I can use my lapdock fine as it fits perfectly with the connections after removing the plastic tray and it cost me around £2. I love not having a case but it's so damn hard locating good replacement digitizers for the atrix I would rather play it safe.
As for apple hardware, it does seem pretty good quality, the I phone 4/s had a really nice weight to it and I have no doubt that the new device will feel more solid than most devices on the marked (excluding the lumia devices ) how this relates to their ruggedness I'm not sure (putting a glass back on a phone really is stupid ) still I would love a sapphire crystal over my camera lense! Android manufacturers really do need to up the quality though, a phone goes with you everywhere and needs to be fairly rugged. Although the Atrix is pretty decent I do wish it was more solid.

Since this a topic about iPhone vs Atrix 4G, I would like to have your opinion on the following. Currently I am not flowing with cash, and I have an iPhone 3G - I saw the Atrix 4G 16GB unlocked on ebay for like 228 (I am in Brazil so hence the unlock) So is the Atrix 4G a good phone (better than my 3G?) Can it run ICS or Jellybean thru custom roms off course, and how is it's gaming power?
Thanks

Well if want Android on iPhone that's the closest you're are ever going to get. Anyway it isn't even that bad, considering the screen is up to retina standards and has pretty good specs such as a Tegra 3. Anyway disregarding the fact that it's a fake iPhone, I bet the build quality is pretty good.

Me. It honestly depends what your intended use of a phone that is the final decision in this case. If you just want a phone that simply works, an IPhone is better, because its very limited in area to improve. Lots of restrictions, developer-wise.
If being able to improve performance in multiple aspects; Android all the way. What does the IPhone really offer when jailbroken? Tweaked themes? Sure, you can unlock it to be used on other carriers...but who wants just 3G?

Others are welcome to create their own categories which they do pretty well.

Sigh.. Am I being too demanding?

I have had I think like 5 RMAs all with different things wrong.. My last one SEEMED perfect but it overheated a lot then suddenly developed a really loud creaking of the frame, so I asked for another and now this one is sooo close to perfect but it has minor minor screen lifting on the left, nothing like it was on the earlier ones, just barely, doesn't move much, do you think it will get worse over time or should I just stick with it cause it's mostly fine ? If the screen lift stays as it is then whatever it's not that bad and I plan on getting a new phone soon anyways so I won't be on my tablet 100% of the time, but if the screen lift worsens then it's unacceptable.. What do you guys think? Did anyone with minor screen lift notice it get worse? I might just try the opening the back to fix it myself at this point.

I just got my 6th Nexus today and I feel the same as you. It has screen lift, stuck pixels, back cover doesn't sit right, backlight bleed, and it has a big LCD mura smudge in the top left corner.
Part of me wants to just give up and get a refund but it would be such a great device if there weren't any faults. I have concluded that none of them are faultless however; many posters here reckon theirs are fault free but I have yet to see one. If you have had 5 RMAs it's only because you, like me, are someone who notices the faults and isn't in denial about them.
Every one of them (but for the smallest percentage) has screen lift to some degree. I'm sure other, more capable manufacturers will be releasing properly built tablets in the very near future though so keep that in mind. You should probably also consider the possibility that the screen lift and the design flaw that causes it will potentially cause other more serious defects to appear like a cracked screen for example.
If the N7 had a direct competitor, there's no way I would buy the Nexus with all the faults it has but as yet, it's the best 7 inch out there all things considered. Won't be difficult for other manufacturers to beat though, just make a tablet with same specs and no faults.
In all honesty if you can't live with the screen lift I would get a refund and wait for something better to come along. You're very unlikely to get one without some sort of fault.
Often people just receive other peoples faulty trade ins. So it might only be 1-2 defective units if that was the case.

I would have given up after the second unit did not satisfy me.I am glad my first one works very well.
A case that covers the bezel takes car of any of those "slight screen lift" problems very well as I suspect it is just cosmetic in nature.jmo
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Albert Einstein
Just saying.
But to answer your question....yes. You will never be satisfied with this device because of your experience, either real or perceived you will always be looking for a flaw. Better to move on with another device that better meets your expectations.
Whatever you decide, good luck.
There is no perfect tablet out there and all of them have something that is going to irritate someone. Get a refund and spend double on the "perfect Ipad" which has no flaws....ever(sarcasm). Again, nothing is perfect in the technology world.

I've had screen lift since the day I opened this one, but like I said it's not bad, it's like just barely reaching the silver part of the bezel, nothing like the original ones where it was above the bezel

If this weren't a nexus device, I would have given up on it after the second RMA, hands down, but now the pros pretty much outweigh the cons, if my tablet stays in the condition it is for the forseeable future (until the next nexus tablet? haha) then I have no problem keeping it, despite the existing flaws. Also I'm considering the fact that when they eventually announce the next nexus phone that I will be picking it up pretty much right away, right now I have an older phone (htc desire Z) so I use my tablet like all the time when I'd be using my phone otherwise, even for texting often haha, so when I get a good phone I suspect it will offset my N7 usage and I won't care as much

A case that covers the bezel takes car of any of those "slight screen lift" problems very well as I suspect it is just cosmetic in nature.jmo

Yeah I need to get a case.. I just have a sleeve right now, I need to figure out which case is best and what I want it for.. I want something that doesn't add much bulk, and maybe one that can be a stand.. I saw one that was a rotating stand so you could set it up in both landscape and portrait and that one seemed cool cause most right now only show landscape :/

Douchebag alert ^
First we (consumers) are spending our hard earned cash on this tablet whether its $200 or $2000. We shouldn't have to settle for a half assed put together product. Their quality sucks period and isn't acceptable. They need six sigma and six S present in their factories. I should be able to RMA till the dumb f#%@s get it right. This is my last Asus product.…
I don't think its demanding at all to expect a product that's not defective right out of the box brand new. If you are within the time period of exchange I don't see why you shouldn't take it back if you aren't happy with what you paid for. It took me 6 exchanges with GameStop to finally get one I'm happy with, that hasn't had an issue out of the box or pop up after a week. If you get a good one this tablet is worth it, at least to me, its essentially a 7" version of my phone which is why I didn't give up looking for a good one. Asus should have better QC in place so I shouldn't have to. I also had the Prime so I can tell you it stinks

I dont wish to read all the posts, but my last one had a minor screen lift that I did not notice for 2 days, but I sent it back because we payed for a tablet that doesnt have a screen lift, thats what it comes down to, not to mention any lift does compromise the glass. My second one is perfect.
A TPU case will provide protection and overhang the lip a little so you don't see any lift.
OR
TRY THE WASHER METHOD by making a few little plastic screw tabs. Pulled mine in nice and tight and it's now solid. I had real bad lift too and the bevel was also bowed on the side. Now everything is nice and straight. Great for a 5 minute fix.
As far as returns, returning something 5 times expecting different results is retarded (IMO). It is a manufacture defect where the screws are too long. They "solve" this by simply removing the screws (which is retarded too). So technically your aren't going to get a perfect device because they are all made that way. Sure there are some that don't have this (my first one) but chances are your going to have this on each one. So just fix it yourself. Big deal. It's easy and faster and BETTER then Asus' fix.
Dead Pixels or popped speakers or something that legitimately hinders your usage... yea exchange that sucker. A little screen lift isn't going to do anything.
I have not had any issues with mine at all, it is an August build. ASUS products have been good to me though. MY TF101 was also good. The power button was and does feel flimsy on that one though.
5 RMA's makes me think someone is looking at this with a magnifying glass and TRYING to find a reason to complain.

Yeah with this one I may just try the washer fix, especially since it seems reversible in the worse case scenario that my tablet breaks somehow.. or maybe I'll just cover it up or both, we'll see haha

[Q] Should you blindly buy Nexus4 or wait a while.

All are really crazy in Selling their phones to buy the Nexus 4 , also with such a great price. Should I do the same , i am confused. I think let Nexus4 play around for some days and then grab it. What should i do?
Basically I'm thinking "failure" is a relative term. Even if the Nexus 4 is a fantastic failure, it is still worlds better than my current phone, and damned cheap without forcing me into a contract. So I'm getting one ASAP, if for a couple months it can only utilize 50% of it's hardware capabilities, it is still twice my current phone, and easily the equal of any phone that is $350 off contract. And once it really is operating at the peak for what its specs say, then it will blow $700 phones out of the water too.

the most important thing of any nexus: timely updates for a few years to come. that was the first thing that attracted me to it before all the rumors. then i saw the announcement, and boy, do those specs look awesome for only $349 (16GB)

My thoughts exactly. It's a huge improvement on the phone I'm using now. For $300-$350 I'd rather buy this brand new than a used phone without warranty. And it's just so sexy looking. (At least I think so.)
I'm honestly not worried about most of the complaints, with the exception of battery life, but I think it will iron out when the actual production model and/or software are released.

lol, the only thing I don't like is that it is completely flat, I loved the curvature to the S and Gnex. Other than that I think it looks spectacular, and the back is sweet. From what I've read google was trying to make it feel better in hand than the other devices, and the other nexi were really the only devices out there curved like that, so whatev. I'm stoked :victory:

Its not completely flat. The left and right edges curve into the sides.
I would wait til the gorilla glass on back proves itself--

I mean the profile is flat, like every other phone. So it's not a big deal, I just really liked the curved profiles of the last two nexi
same question
How likely is it that there are issues with the first production round, performance-wise (i.e. not the glass back), which can't be solved with a software update? I'm a little naive, and I tried a bit to search for an answer, but this thread is the closest I came up with.
Based on the wording of your question and being your first post--welcome--I would wait. Always a chance for something not right. I bought the first Nexus--N1--sight unseen from Google when they came out. Wanted to root and flash. It had a bad touchscreen, as most did, but livable.
Many people here are hard core flashers and want cutting edge phones... So, they don't worry about the risk.
Unless you are in that category or have need to buy now, I would wait.
I don't understand why people are so concerned with the gorilla glass on the back. Does the gorilla glass on the front not breakable?

Because it is something extra to break. We accept glass fronts because they are necessary. It's like windows in your house, there is a general amount of structure that most people are okay with sacrificing to have windows. But you wouldn't want your entire house glass.
Personally I like the glass back and am willing to just be careful fore sake of aesthetics. A lot of people don't think the looks are worth the extra breakable surface.
I have an S3 and have thought about switching, but I really dig the S3's huge screen and fancy software features. I am very conflicted on this... the S4 Pro is nice but how much difference is it going to make in day to day operation.

If you have it front and back--you double your chances of something breaking, excluding the sides. It looks good, not sure why it is needed though. It would not stop me from buying it, if i wanted the phone. Deciding btwn Note 2 and N4 atm.

For day to day not much at all to be honest most current android devices can handle day to day operations well.
Personally the N4 has the better screen compared to the SGS3 but that's my opinion. You've got removable battery and expandable storage on your device.

I have been pondering about upgrading my N1 (too old but usable with a variant of CM9). Wait for full review on the device like audio quality before jumping in. Apart from non-changeable battery and no micro SD card slot (and maybe glass back), this phone looks tempting to me. Not sure why they don't have 32G version yet.

Love 99.9% of the Pixel :)

Man this phone is sweet. Display, sound build quality camera software all awesome. But the one thing I do not like at all is the chins on the is phone. Man they are huge. If I compare it to the Nexus 5 or 5X or the 6P these chins are like twice as big. I wonder what the heck Google was thinking when they did that. No screen protector on mine or case, the phone is a tad slippery as well. But I got that $4.99 a month insurance from Google so that should cover me...

I wish I could get the old Nexus ones back. I'll be installing Zedge soon.
Loving it here too, a bit wary of the battery life so far but it is far too early to draw any conclusions as Android does take a while to settle.
Really impressed with how responsive the phone is - passed it around my colleagues at work and they all commented on it.
It is also really nice to be able to sit down with a phone in my pocket without it jabbing me and being uncomfortable like the 6P was.
Agreed. Initially when the pics started leaking and everyone was freaking out about the chins I was thinking "they're not that bad"... Once in hand I was like "yeah, they're bad".
Phone is much taller than it should have been imho.
Loving everything else about it so far though.
Can't wait to get root.

Comparing to my N5X the fingerprint sensor is higher up, almost to the equivalent increase in chin size. Really feels off when using the fingerprint sensor for me.

How did you get that? When I purchased the phone, the insurance was a flat rate of $99. I went back and checked and I still don't see a $4.99/month plan. Am I looking in the wrong area?
EDIT: nevermind...I see. You're a Project Fi customer. Y'all get the month-month payments...lucky
I've had the Pixel since Friday but only really spent time with it this afternoon/evening. I also purchased the Axon7 so I ha e been testing that one out up till today. I have to say I do like the Pixel very much. I have no case of screen protector so I was hesitant to use but since I'm 90% sure I'm sending it back I took it to work. Form factor is very nice although I must admit that going from N5x to A7 to Pix I do notice the smaller screen. It's very clean though. Way better than my N5x and not to sure about A7 because I still have factory screen protector on. I can say though it feels very delicate in the hands, like I need to be careful(slippery to). I will straight up admit that if the Pixel was $500 I wouldn't even think twice, it would stay. Just don't think I can justify$730 for a phone. Not with how nice midrange phones are and the price they fetch. Plus I have 7.1.1 on my N5x along with Google Assistant. Who knows though, I still have 8 days left to decide.

$5*24 months = $120, you paid less for insurance though...
Really, the chin is no where near as bad as I thought it would be or how people say it would be.
The design is very consistent, symmetrical and balanced. The front looks like a better version of the iPhone, with the omission of the ugly home button. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the back, even though it has grown in me. If anything, the back is my gripe much more than the chin. Never noticed the bezels.
Sent from my Pixel using XDA-Developers mobile app
Just got mine yesterday, so not much time on it.
I actually think it has really good grip naked compared to other phones, but i always use a slim case.
My only gripes are bezels and some os/launcher options or lack of options. Otherwise it's a near perfect phone for my needs. Google will fix/add some of my concerns in upcoming updates
Yes price is high but it was built to compete with apple/Samsung, so its priced right. Although appl/Samsung are overpriced...hahaha
I put mine on the t-mobile promo, so i will get some credit back. Won't get the full $325 cause i change phones 1-2 times a yr. This one will probably make a full yr.
Hmm I think the chins are about the same as 5X. The 5X did have that front facing speaker on the front. If Pixel had that I think it would save it from being complained about.
yeah... to me the weirdest thing about the bottom chin is that it's just blank. Nothing there except chin -- no button, no speaker, just unused space. Every time I pick up a pixel I just wish they could have made it about 5mm shorter
I'm ok with the chin. Actually the Caseology parallax case changed the way I hold my phone so much I barely even notice (always had a pinky rest on the gigantic chin). The back of this case is amazing for grip.
The only sad thing for me and for lots of others it seems? The downward firing speaker. It sounds clear. It's soo easy to cover. Coming from a 6p and a 5x even, it's just a massive bummer. Even the 5x was aok.

Are you guys using the regular display mode or the srgb one?
In my opinion the colors in the regular mode are too punchy and the srgb is quite nice, just the whites turn quite yellowish unfortunately.
I am completely loving this phone right now. I was a bit weary of it being an HTC phone since my only experience with HTC was the HTC One and it was a TERRIBLE phone all around. The One was probably the worst phone I've ever had, so it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
Other than that, the (IMO) minimalist feel and the fact that the phone just works is making me very happy. So far that's without root or anything. If there were a way to get unlocked hotspot without root that would be icing on the cake. I probably wouldn't even root or mod anything else if I had hotspot working
