[Q] Which thread best for audio Volume issue on 4.2.1? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

guys I've spent a lot of time chasing various threads on xda and elsewhere, re: the very low pitiful audio volume levels for movie replay on nexus 7 with 4.2.1 .... to no avail. volume+ from the apps store comes up as "compatible with all devices" for me but it ain't. doesn't work yet on JB.
I've read, re-read, and re-re-read the thread over in Android devel of a custom patch for DSP supposedly to give 'beats' like audio, improvements, etc requires custom kernel at least if not rom - but no straight answers on what mix it takes to make it work nexus 7 on 4.2.1 so I assume it no worky either.
SOOOOO.... is there ONE thread somewhere that can serve as the checkpoint for all of us suffering through this issue? its been reported to Google ad infinitum and I'm sure sooner or later will get a remedy if such is possible with this hardware, but it will happen more quickly the custom route I suspect.
any clues??
I note [for those that don't know] that Youtube sounds great, and what little I've tried Netflix, its passable, but playback of 720p movie files using MX Player or others [some are not yet compatible with 4.2.1] its unbearable. another win for the tablet that must not be mentioned around here.....

Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889522
Working ok for me...

I will if you can give me an answer I need: I read on one of those threads [he/they post in several forums so I not sure which I saw this] that one needs to install a Custom Kernel [Trinity was one I jotted down], possibly a custom ROM [i.e. not the google OTA JOP40D], and in another post, that one might need to Uninstall the stock DSP Manager [and replace with ?????]
assuming you're working OK [ie MX Player playing a good MP4 file, great volume??] on 4.2.1, what was your recipe?
thanks so much :good:

This post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31619899&postcount=2, post #2 contains the mod for Android 4.2...you just need to be rooted and have custom recovery... supports AOSP/stock ROM it says... just try it.. make a nandroid first of course... oh and you can also ask in that thread, misledz is the expert.. I think the mod is system wide.
Although you can't access equalizer settings within mxplayer... I know mxplayer has a volumeboost option... >200% volume boost not enough?
Hehe.. hope it helped...

yes even with the 200% boost the 720p rips I am trialing [in this case its LOTR TT platinum edition title 1] is too light. in fact through what google excuses as a speaker [guffaw....] its useless. headphones with vol at 100% is just barely useful.
BUT - the good news is that instead of fooling with the whole JB Beats custom stuff, I just went to the store and installed noozxoid and WOW! :good: that is one serious application. HUGE difference not just in volume which really is not the point of it, but in quality, customizations, adjustments, .... That app should be getting a lot more attention than it is. its bigtime https://play.google.com/store/apps/...NvbS5ub296eG9pZGVsYWJzLmVpem8ucmV3aXJlcHJvIl0.
I have not tried netflix since installing it so I will and will put some remarks here. around the web I see a lot of complaining about volume of streamed content on netflix
thank you for your notes
ps if you try out noozxoide note that you must set it up - go through all the settings and pick your stuff. it does not assume/default anything.

Why not keep it there? {Rom} {GalnetMIUI 1.11.7} {ICS 4.0.1} {11-7-11}
Yes, just saw it.
This line will keep me away from it,
The bad news is that the MIUI ROM comes with heavy UI customization and it won’t let you enjoy the ICS UI novelties, but that’s not necessarily a bad news.

Well, MIUI is good, using ICS as base in MIUI is great but proper ICS on Galaxy S2 will be a whole new experience. Waiting for someone to port it to SGS2.

I just flashed this rom and I'm loving it. I've been using it for 2 hours and I love the MIUI features. It's like Cyanogenmod, but less nerdy and seems to offer better/more functionality.
What I love most is that the Flashlight will start from simply holding the 'Home' button at your lock screen.
Makes it super smooth to enable/disable flashlight, as it disables when you let go the home button.
If you don't like the MIUI launcher, use Go Launcher or some other instead.
I couldnt get used to the MIUI because it places all your apps on your homescreens. I'm sure you could get used to this, but I don't feel like it.
DEFINATELY TRY IT THOUGH! It's butter-smooth.
Just remember to make a Back-up of your current ROM using CWM
Usual stuff that have bugs/dont work:
1080p recording
Video playback (avi, mpg, mkv, etc)
This rom with ics theme and ics launcher will be sweet
downloading now =)
i am kinda addicted to cyanogen cause of the settings menu, but i think ill survive
Sadly i cannot change my Beautiful widgets skin
oh well

Yea I'm new to MIUI.
I tried to record 1080.
I hit the record button, it was recording - then when I stopped recording - the camera application Force Closed.
And nah, I can't play my *.mpg file
EDIT: Playing mpg and avi worked if using the native Video Player coming with Galnet Miui (Galnet Video PLayer)

Correct me if I'm wrong.
But MIUI is based on Cyanogenmod correct?
If so, some files don't work. From my testing, x264 encoded files don't work, as do some files downloaded from Youtube.
For those that have installed, can you try using Tubemate to download the 1080p version of the Battlefield 3 launch trailer and see if it works? Thanks.
Giving it a go myself tomorrow morning. Gonna sleep now.
Preformance test gave me score of 2900, and this should be with 2 duel core? Loled they just make this up to attract people's attention. Its sure not ICS based rom.

720p video playback in ICS worse than HC

I saw there was a thread kind of about this but that got derailed...
I'm using Dice Player, MX Player, and BS Player. BS seems to work the best, but still not as good as Dice was back in HC.
Does anyone know if it's just a matter of those apps having to be optimized for ICS?

Well it's not ICS that is killing some 720P file, it's the Tegra...
i find ICS a lot better than HC, but still unable to play high profile 720p mkvs without lag.
DicePlayer is even worse than honeycomb though. MX and BS player are barely watchable.

I'm having similar issues
I can play mkv normally but audio seems to not work. This is using the stock player.

I confirm the same, Bsplayer plays the audio but not the video . As for the Dice it always crashes ! I will lnstall Revolution HD 3 and see if this will play the 720p videos !!!
all those having issues- you need to reboot.
also bare in mind that video playback issues are not the OS's fault, Tegra 2 is underpowered to play video at 720p and 1080p, always has been, always will be.

I disagree , before ics i had revolver and i was able to play 720p without any problem. I rebooted 7 times after the update but still nothing , even the camera stopped working in panoramic mode !

me too, you need to do an ICS reinstall, my video playback is the same as on revolver now.
rebooted around a dozen times between lockups and just actual reboots, i've noticed no difference in any app.
i find it strange that people seem to have very different experiences than me. i have no issues getting them to play, it's just the lag.
do a reinstall of ICS.

There was a thread somewhere about best settings for Handbrake for encoding mp4 to suit the Transformer. These are the settings:
"Start with the Regular/Normal Preset
Container: MP4 File
On the Video tab, choose:
Video Codec: H.264
Constant Quality: RF 24 (Lower number is better quality but higher file size, I wouldn't suggest going lower than 20 in this case)
On the audio tab change the Mixdown to "Stereo", bitrate 160
On the Advanced Tab:
Maximum B-Frames: 0
Uncheck "CABAC Entropy Coding"
Uncheck "8x8 Transform"
Uncheck "Weighted P-Frames"
After those changes, you can save these by clicking on Presets -> Save Preset and name it something like "Transformer". "
This is an exact quote of the post, I don't have the original on hand to thank the original poster. But he does deserve my thanks, as this made 720p video beautiful on my FT101.
Doesn't work so well when streamed via wifi, I think 802.11G is a little too slow, maybe I need to go to 802.11N. Works fine via a portable hard disk, or a microSD card, or even a USB stick. If you have the dock or the usb converter adaptor thingy.
Sorry for those who don't have access to a grunty PC for converting using handbrake, I guess my post isn't much help to you. I'm waiting until I get my TF101 back from a warranty repair to try a few things out, including ICS. I'm currently running Revolver, and I'm VERY happy with it.. kudos GNufabio.

what the f?
Furthermore, you go on to demand that the person who gave you a nice suggestion should help you even more by holding your hand through the process.

well one person got reported for being a douche.
and yes, i'm well aware of how to flash a rom.
most of us here however are running stock ICS from the update with no root or anything like that. So simply saying reinstall ICS is not a very intelligent statement.
If i have an issue with my nexus i know how to back it up and reinstall because i have CWM installed.
however on this, as i just said, i'm running a totally stock device. i've never rooted, never installed a custom recovery, and i don't want to.
and personally, i also think the suggestion of installing ICS is BS and won't make a difference.
anyway, thank you @squire-au for that. i have seen that post and have been hoping there would be another way since totally encoding can take a very long time. but i will be testing that out overnight to see what happens.

[Q] [REQ] Bareboned ICS

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to ask if it is possible for someone with an working dev setup to make a kind of bareboned AOSP ICS with just basic mods like volume skip, power shutter, statusbar widgets, su and extended Power Menu, although I for one don't need the last one? I think everything else can be done with apps and everyone can add the apps he or she prefers.
Coming from AOKP because of some problems, I'm really missing such features in Peter Alfonsos ROM atm.
To me it looks like one can get a ROM with all possible features (wich make ROMs not that stable) or a ROM nearly stock.
Is there anyone with me?
PS: I appreciate the work of all devs here! I'm very glad to have a device with such high quality ROMs! Without the community support, there would be nearly no support by the hw manufacturers. But I think, the less code is hacked, the less problems are. It's just that AOSP lacks some nice features like the obove mentioned.
Slim ICS has exactly that and practically no other bloat. Pixel ROM probably has all these too now. Both are heavily based on Stock ICS and change as little as possible besides the features you stated.
Thanks!
To be honest, I have not tried every ROM out there. I checked the threads of both ROMs you mentioned but did not find that volume skip mod is integrated. But when it comes to listening to music, no touch screen beats hard keys so that was the main feature I wanted.
I'll check them out both and let you know!
Thanks again!
EDIT: Okay, just flashed slimICS and so far it looks like the way to go! Just have to test its stability over the next days!
BTW am I blind or is it not mentioned in slimICS thread, that volume skip is integrated? I checked the thread more than one time, also I had slimICS on my phone some time ago and I don't rememeber what I missed that time...
It is integrated in slim. Don't know if its mentioned. Likely the same scenario with pixel but haven't used it recently. Both great roms though so might be wise to try em both.

It's available in General UI settings under ASS unless I'm mistaken.
I'm also one that can't live without this volume skip MOD
I think it's not mentioned in the thread because there are so many features under ASS.
That's why the dev only mentioned something about this new ASS.
Yea, I already got where the option is. Thanks! But I just didn't try the ROMs because I always read the changelogs and all, and although I am flashing regulary I want to come to a point, where I stay with a ROM more than half a day It just seems that volume skip for krarvind and wildestpixel is not that important (but why did they integrate it then ) or it is so essential for them that they took it for granted.
Either way, for now I'm happy with slimICS and perhaps I'm going to try Pixel ROM later!
Have a nice day everyone out there!

Your next version should really have the build.prop lines automatically reflect the changes. Having said that, your install process is also really complicated. Although I got it to work eventually, I can imagine many people messing their phones up. Also, an uninstaller would be nice too. I may sound like ass saying this, but your app gave me many headaches leading to multiple wipes of my phone.
Rename of title to How To would be better than MOD as its not a mod but a how to guide .

I apologize Matt. I am very sorry for that lol.
Here's my install.
Installed Universal Twice and then went for the Noozxoide install and removed Noozy afterwards. I can attest that all these mods on JB aren't as as they were on ICS. It's perplexing. No matter what I do, it's not the same bass+EQ. Some of the options now on JB actually cancel each other out. Frustrating to say the least.

[DISCUSSION] Why Atrix is the perfect audio player

Ok, in light of my recent hair-pulling problems with CM10.1 lately, I have decided to give to the community instead of taking from it.
The Mega-Audiorific Atrix Discussion Thread
Drumroll please... Wait... How could I forget about the bass.
If you are lazy with listening to music (shame on you), skip to 0:56
This thread is here for 2 reasons.
Code:
1. It is hard to find the information I'm about to provide.
2. I want people to provide their insight on anything music related to the Atrix such as the following:
Examples:
* What music player app do you like the most on your Atrix?
* What audio format do you listen to normally (MP3, FLAC) with it?
* What apps make your music sound better on the Moto Atrix?
* What rom makes the audio sound the best for you?
* What music sounds the best on your Atrix?
To keep this thread in this subforum however, and not the General Android Discussion section,
I ask that you only provide answers to these questions regarding the Atrix, and make that known.
This is not a "I love this artist!" or "I don't think you know very much about music." thread.
Please keep replies to a minimum, so that this does not get flooded with flamers or Nazi's (no offense meant...sorry if I offended).
Everyone has their opinion, and they have the right to defend it, but they don't have the right to attack with it.
Be mature. Pushing opinions on others will get you nowhere. Opinions are opinions, not facts.
Without further ado, let's get started.
And I will start with the main reason audio sounds generally better with your Atrix.
The reason your Atrix sounds so good is... (dun dun duuuuuh...badum ch!!)
The Atrix 4G has a dedicated audio chip in it! =3 It's a medium-low end Wolfson chip.
Hard to find the info for it, but I wanted to know what made PowerAMP with FLAC
sound so good compared to an iPhone with ALAC. (both with equalizer off, charger port on iPhone -> Audio jack/headphones)
If you do some digging, you'll find this to be true.
I'm going to miss my Atrix when it becomes time to move on to another phone
I have my eyes set on the HTC One X+ or the Samsung Galaxy S4,
depending on what my budget is when the time comes.

Cool. I haven''t heard of XenoAMP. I'll check it out.
I guess I can answer the questions with my answers. Also, future readers, please don't think that you have to use these questions, specifically. This is a discussion thread! It's not just a poll!
1: I've used PowerAMP since I got into FLAC. For me, nothing has beaten the audio quality and ranges I can get out of PowerAMP.
2: I guess I answered this in #1 and my OP. I love and always will use FLAC. With that said, the best way to do this is to purchase the CDs yourself! To be honest, most local CDs are the same price, or even less expensive, than iTunes or other markets (Import albums, of course, cost more usually). Not only that, but you get upwards 10x the quality! How can you beat that? Seriously, try sticking an official CD (not burned from iTunes) in your car radio, if you have one, and hear the difference for yourself!
Of course, I understand that MP3's are way smaller, and going along with what andresrivas said, not everyone has a 16+GB SD card. xD
3: I will say that when I used to use GB, and I was testing out audio, I didn't feel like spending time working on PowerAMP's 10-band equalizer. It was just too much. So, I looked into other apps, and found that Equalizer helped to make things sound better, using its 5 band equalizer and many presets that I actually used to use. Check it out if you're looking for a better equalizer for your entire phone! (I'm guessing XenoAMP does something similar?)
4: Actually, recently I trying CM9 out (krystianp's version with the 3.1.10 kernel), and my phone sounded better than I heard it immediately upon restoring my PowerAMP app+data through TiBu (Titanium Backup) Pro. It was amazing, and I hadn't even changed the usual preset's settings that I used. For some reason, CM10.1 by Epinter doesn't sound as good though, which saddens me...
5: Drum & Bass. The phone and the audio systems I regularly use are able to really pick up those residual base backgrounds along with the short, punchy beats up front. Also, Hifana's albums sound amazing! You can check one of their songs out here, if you're interested. I linked to track 12 because it's awesome and shows you their style, but you will need to sign in to listen. I highly recommend this site for listening, because it's much higher quality than Youtube (almost lossless, it feels like), and they have a lot of albums available for free listening...
If you want more of Hifana, listen to that whole album, and then check out their Channel H album. All of their music is good, in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about that.
You should try searching the forums, something like "Atrix 4G no sound" or "Atrix 4G sound issue". Adding your rom name or searching "stock" in addition to those might help if they apply to you.
I realize that you're just commenting on your situation (and not asking for support). Thanks for this.
If you're on stock, I can't help you much anyways. I haven't used stock Atrix in 2 years. I would search first, as per XDA rules/requests (plus it's just being courteous), then ask in the Atrix Q & A section of the forum. Perhaps a rom reinstall might help? (You can Factory Reset without rooting/unlocking bootloader)
Make sure to read instructions in the General threads, and of course the Beginners' Guide. They might help as well.
Just thought I'd try to help
(For future readers) This is in the general section, so support questions don't apply here. I'd also prefer not to have support question clutter. (I know you weren't exactly doing so, crack.mech )

Thanks for the suggestions Drakonas. I have been flashing different ROMs for a while now, and it doesn't seem to help. Though I hear some sort of crackling noise through the headset when I turn up the volume to full while playing music. As per my (re)search this seems to be a flex cable issue, but seems a bit wierd, as the speaker is not connected via flex cable ( I have opened up my atrix a few times!1 ). So I seriously doubt replacing the flex cable would help. But except for the audio issues, my atrix is still going strong, all thanks to the great developer community here.
And, I am seriously sorry to hijack this thread. Please accept my apologies.

Did you try to connect your atrix through an external portable amplifier? This may help.

1. Yep... I like it too.
2. Hey, whatever suits your preference.
3. Yeah, with some tweaking of it, you can get good sound. (This is from/for CyanogenMod roms for those who don't know) If I'm listening to music with PowerAMP, though, I don't like DSP Manager on. It's my preference, since I've customized PowerAMP's 10-band equalizer myself, vs DSP Manager's 5-band equalizer. Running 10-band through 5-band can defeat the purpose of the 10-band, but it depends I suppose.
4. Love CyanogenMod! Are you using a popular rom, by chance? I don't have the knowledge to customize a rom yet, so I usually just use one of the pre-built roms out there. My favorite for CM7 on the Atrix was Neutrino, but I changed to Atrix-MROM because it had the same battery-life and even better performance for me. Plus, the developer knows more what he's doing. He's part of the new 4.0 Kernel Project team.
5. I don't really listen to heavy metal, not anymore at least. I guess I grew up around teens that listened to it and thought it was the most amazing thing ever. (plus they often didn't care to try any other music. This probably differs you from them, hopefully ) I soon learned that there are thousands and possibly millions of styles of music out there, and there's more around every doorstep. I've spent the last 5 years building my music tastes, and I've switched favorite genres about 20 times, until I found the underground 20-year-old Drum & Bass scene.
But to each their own. Any specific artists that you like? I used to listen to DragonForce a lot, but I guess that's more Power Metal than Heavy Metal.

1. Hey, saving music in the cloud can be really useful. I guess the only reason I wouldn't want to is (A) I prefer FLAC which isn't usually provided and (B) I don't have a data plan currently, so playing on the go would be impossible. I have a lot of space anyways... I suppose you have a phone without much space to hold music?
2. Again, space. Plus I suppose it's the best format to use with Play Music.
3. Yeah, DSP really helps with MP3. I agree. I will say that if you get better headphones, you'll get better bass and clarity. I recommend some $10 to $20 Koss in-ear headphones for the lowest price, if you're not the person to have money laying around. Off-brand are usually crap, like Skullcandy. And for goodness sakes, if you want high-end headphones don't buy Beats by Dr. Dre. It is well known that they are overpriced pieces of crap compared to what you could get for half (or even less) of the price. Get some Audio-Technica Over-the-ears if you have that kind of money.
4. I love MROM. Best CM7 for Atrix in my opinion.
5. Nice! Make sure you check out Autechre and Flying Lotus, if you haven't already!

Sorry for my bad English
How about adding links to all music enhancers... i.e. dsp manager, beats, voodoo or what ever else they have for Atrix... And I know voodoo is not for Atrix...
Sent 4rm My O.G. Atrix on it's Lapdock using Weptop+... Which let me add is so Extra F***ing Beast... Galaxy S4 can't touch this...
Atrix MROM with Shure E4c
Nice to know there are still Atrix fans. I am addicted to the sound quality delivered by Moto Atrix since 2011. Now I have three of it (one 2.3.4 as mobile, one MROM with minor touch screen defect as music player and one brand new as spare).
music app -> DoomPlay (it plays additional ALAC, 24bit96 WAV, BUT play mp3 may distort);
audio format -> mainly 16_44 WAV, some ALAC;
app sound better -> DSP manager with enabled bass boost set moderate, enabled equaliser set acoustic;
rom sound best -> MROM with DSP manager
best music sounds -> M.J., The Carpenters, Korea OST like ht tps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6n5Ho9n9OPM
Moto Atrix drives my shure E4c earphone pretty well. No portable amplifier required.
Instead of MROM, I find the music sound seems a bit better from my Atrix 2.2.2.
I can feel the pure silence, position is more accurate and more crisp clear.
