Raspberry Pi purchase & setup guide for developers - Raspberry Pi General

Hey all,
I spent some time documenting the steps I took during the purchase and setup of my Pi:
philyoussef.blogspot.com/2012/12/raspberry-pi-setup-guide-for-developers.html
My goal was to get set up for remote development as quickly as possible. I now have my pi downstairs hooked up to an outlet and I ssh into it. Hopefully this can save you a couple of headaches.
@PhilYoussef

It would be great if the Pi had PoE so that I could just use a patch cable to power it and communicate with it.

Warranty Enquiry
Hello all and apologies if my query is unacceptable in this thread. I did not feel the need to create an individual thread for my limited query.
I am very keen on purchasing a couple of Raspberry Pi units and my biggest concern is the warranty. I did send an e-mail to infoatraspberrypi.org, first on 16 December 2012 and then on 19 December 2012 but as of now there has been no response.
I would like to know what is the official standard manufacturer's warranty offered on a Raspberry Pi unit? Also, is the manufacturer's warranty region specific or international?
Awaiting your replies.

The RPi has a limited 1-year warranty though Farnell the company that manufactures the RPi. Also the warranty is the same internationally, more information on the warranty and what it does and does not cover can be found here http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...i4CQDw&usg=AFQjCNEr1pCjGD7gsUXt-sY-RWnjdteNxg.

I think you will get a quicker response from one of the resellers (Farnell, RSComponents, ADAFruit...), so try one of those instead. But I don't you have to worry about the warranty, there are of course always defects but I've yet to hear about a dead board.

USA vs EU

Will there be major differences between the American and European versions? I'm in two minds asking my girlfriend to pick it up from the states or wait till its released here.
Will it need different ROMs, or will they be the same?

I don’t see the WiFi versions being different. The I/O Limited Edition supports most languages.
Wifi model will probably be the same, you should get her to get 2 one for you then i buy one haha
Another issue I have is warranty as it will not be covered in the UK
How about power spec and connector? Related to the charger ...

Weigh up the risks. It’s probably worth waiting just a little longer. The choice is yours.

The power spec is the same. But the adapter plug is not for the UK so you will have to buy a Samsung travel adapter which are readily available or use the adapter from the Galaxy Tab if you have one.

I think this is a big issue. There's already reports of touch screen glass coming away from the body for the IO version. If you're an early adopter then you have to accept that you are likely to find flaws/issues that were missed by Samsung's QA team. To take that risk without being covered with warranty is a pretty big gamble.
I'm also from UK and would love to get this device but I'm using the later release in UK as a good opportunity to monitor reports of issues with the device coming from early adopters of regions where it is released early.
looks like 3G might be different

The item which they had sent me is the super pocket i7. This is ARM6 791.34MHz with 184MB/256MB RAM and 1GB internal storage. This is most definitely a different product from what i had ordered. I informed them within 6 hours of receiving the delivery that this is not the item which i had ordered and that they should refund the money. Following are the replies i got:
Me - Hi,
I had ordered the tab flytouch 3, but the item which you have shipped to me as being displayed in the mail i have received from you is Super pocket i7, which is a lower configuration tablet than the flytouch 3. How this has happened at an online portal so reputed as ipmart.com is beyond me. Kindly reply immediately and send me the correct item which i have ordered.

I had ordered a flytouch 3 model tablet pc whose link on ipmart.com is

The item i have received is a different model altogether. It is super pocket i7 which is a much lower configuration item than the fly touch 3. I received the item vide DHL way bill no. 7328669526 and the item was delivered today at 12:40 pm IST on 07.01.2012. This status can be checked on the website link

IPMART - Dear Mr. Amit
Thanks for your message and video. After we checked with our stock department and manufacturer, we have shipped out the correct Android 2.3 Infotmic X220 ARM 11 1GHz DDRⅡ 512M HDD 4GB WIFI Camera G-sensor 7-inch Resistive Touch Screen Tablet PC - Fly Touch 3 (item ID: 330462) to you.
Because the new batch of stock, all the packaging had been changed to Super pocket i7.
The tablet pc that you have received is model Fly Touch 3, the Super pocket i7 is the name of the tablet pc packaging. This tablet pc has the same memory, hard drive, appearance, size, function, etc. as listed in our website.
Since you already received the item, you may test the product, it is the same product that you have ordered.
Please do inform us if you have any inquiries. Thank you.
Best regards,
Wendy
Me - Dear Wendy,
This most definitely is not the same product which i had ordered. I am attaching here some photos of the info of the hardware which clearly shows that the processor is ARM6 791.34 MHz whereas the product which i had ordered is ARM11 1GHz. The RAM is 184 MB whereas the item which i had ordered is 512MB DDRII. The storage is 1GB in the unit which you have sent me whereas the item which i had ordered had storage of 4GB. How can you say this is the same product. This is clearly the same product. Now the right thing to do is accept your mistake and return my money as the item you have sent me is much much inferior to the item which i had ordered.
Amit Oberoi
This is what is happening. Do they think the customer is a fool that they can give a petty excuse that the packaging has changed. This is outright insulting.
I have again sent a message to them with the system info photos which i have also attached herewith. Let us see what their reply is. I will keep you all posted. However, my experience till now - BEWARE OF IPMART.COM. THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND THEN CONSIDERING YOU A FOOL, THEY WILL FORCE DOWN WHATEVER THEY HAVE DISPATCHED.

This happens too????
If i lived in tje US. I would stick to the big companies
Dont get me wrong. It isnt your fault in any way. God i hate people that does this to others. :/
I used mah awesome Xperia Play R800i w/ CM7 to write this
reminds me of when i almost bought a kit of 20 android pads for $25 each in quantity from china, then thought this is way toooo good to be true, turns out it was, i looked them up on ripoff.com and found out before i bought, then again i should have known that was wayyy to cheap for a pad than could do all those things lol
25$ for a pad is actually too good to be true. However, i ordered from ipmart.com because it is supposed to be a reputed site. All is still not lost as after sending them the specifications of the tab which i have received they are saying that they have sent the specifications to the manufacturer and are waiting for a word from him and then they will get back to me. Lets see what happens. in the meanwhile i have bought a samsung galaxy tab and it is excellent. I dont know what got into me in the first place that i ordered a chinese tab.
i dont think ipmart will screw up there reputatioin just because of usd 80
@amitoberoi
1)for my opinion i dont believe a company with forum with 1.5million member and with 240,000 fans at facebook ( iPmartMY) will screw up their reputation just because of a tablet pc cost not more the usd 80
2) if they still continue to reply your msg or trying to solve your issue and its not fair to start post they are fraud company
i find similar stuff on craigslist as well, definitely gotta be careful
Dear amitoberoi,
we apologise for the inconvenience caused. Rest assure that we will be refunding the amount for the item once we have received the package.

Nice result in the end!
Hey, why is everybody blaming China? IPMART is India Produce Market. Saying that the Indians are quite keen business folks and probably ship direct from China.
It would cost them more to ship it back so it makes sense to leave it.
Go for the novo7 Aurora. Much better.

Best method to import to UK from USA

Hello, forgive me if this is a common question but searching doesn't yield much info.
I'm considering a Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 Tablet new or second hand but really want the USA spec as I believe the UK model has less features such as IR Blaster.
Can anyone advise best procedure to get one delivered to the UK from USA. I mean is eBay a good option or do some suppliers specialise in this type of thing. I just worry a little with regards to safe delivery and reliability.
Thanks
Found a UK supplier of refurbished by Samsung Galaxy 2 10.1 models with the IR Blaster.
I mailed them to confirm and they replied that these were the US models with IR, at a good price but I worry how good a quality these would be.
Has anyone bought refurbished that can advise ?

Sorry, Posted in right place now
I've posting in wrong place, so sorry.
Now posted on Tab 2 forum, sorry again
Can't speak to the refurbisher you're looking at but I can say having bought refurbished before that USUALLY is means pretty immaculate second hand. Most often these are new devices that had an issue that was fixed, for example dead pixels, which means that part of the unit is corrected and the unit is sold again as B-Grade.
Also purchasing through Ebay is pretty safe, check the terms of the seller but you'll find that Ebay's policies are pretty purchaser oriented.
Thanks for the advice, appreciated.

Help with buying reliable OEM headunit!

Hello people,
I am looking to buy an OEM headunit for Renault Megane III car.
I don't know much about these kind of headunits so I would like to help me if you can...
I want it to have:
-reliability
-performance
-sound quality (as much as possible)
-built quality (as much as possible)
-after sales service
After some search I conclude that I have to choose a device with:
-px5 or px6 (and maybe px30) cpu
-2 or 4 gb of ram
-dsp chip
-ips screen
What do you think?
Also I found several brands like Xtrons, Witson, Isuddar, Teyes, Zwnav but I don't know which is the best choice...
Could you help me?
Thank you anyway!
i bought an EONON? i probably got that wrong about 4 years ago now there is no sound output. it did provide a good service so I'll just watch this thread for any ideas.
You are not going to get any of that from any vendor of these units. Except maybe performance if you mean fast loading and responsive apps.

What is your suggestion?
I don't think that any of the Chinese head units are going to be able to deliver on your requirements. From what I can see, none of the Chinese manufacturers provide any form of meaningful after-sales service, which is one of the reasons there are so many people posting in these forums. Also, reliability is suspect. While there are people who have units that have worked for many years, there are also a lot of people that post here after their units have failed over much shorter time-frames. The old adage is true: You get what you pay for. The Chinese head units provide great bang for your buck, good features, and good functionality. But you're just not going to get the same reliability and after-sales service that you would from one of the Japanese brands.
Disclaimer: I've only been in this space for a few months after buying a PX6 based unit. I have had a few small problems with it along the way which I have been able to solve with help from users on this forum, and it's now at the point where I am really happy with the unit. It still has some annoyances, but overall I think it has been a fantastic upgrade. I'm just basing what I wrote above on what I have seen in these forums over the past few months, and on my own experiences.
Fully agree... but:

I had some Pioneer and Kenwood in the past years now and I found out that the support by them is not even better as the one from any Chinese seller.
That is the reason that I only buy directly from Klyde and Joying.
There I can say that the support is acceptable... more or less.
I've experienced a fairly good level of support from Xtrons so far. I've had several questions over my 20 month ownership and they've always been prompt at replying. I've received updated firmware from them, and most recently the unit stopped detecting reverse gear in order to switch to the reverse camera. I had a good email exchange, returned the unit to a UK company - basically a logistics hub - for "repair or replacement". I received a brand new replacement unit within 10 days with no hassle.
The reason I chose Xtrons was for the 2 year warranty, official sales and UK shipping. My advice is to be careful who you buy from. You can buy Xtrons on eBay, but the reseller might not offer the same guarantees.
By the way, I since bought a Erisin unit from eBay. It was 2/3 the price and the seller assured me 1 year warranty. It works great so far, just as good as the Xtrons but better looking. But I won't hold my breath on it lasting for years.
