[Q] Strange SMS formatting containing an ad? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just ran across this thread on Reddit and thought I'd ask if there is anyone here that could tell me where this is originating from.
Basically when you send an SMS with "one is what he showed me" in it, it is sending a link to ad that is opening up in Maps. I don't know if an app that I have installed is causing this or it is a default behavior.
I did verify that it is happening and seems to be tied to an ad that is targeting automobiles.
Also, I did use the search function but I came up empty, so if this has been mentioned before sorry but, could you post a link to the thread?

my results in places to eat and hotels, strange indeed, its not a 3rd party program doing this

On mine I get an ad banner at the top of the maps page for mobile dating and directed to a guest house!
I'm stock 4.2.1, this is pretty disgusting if added by Google. What other phrases are "hyperlinked" and what sort of ads would I see. What if this phone belonged to a child and adult ads they might see?

SMS delivery notice shows only the number not the name?

I am pasting the question from another forum which interests me as well…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hi all,
when sending sms and you set the setting for ask for delivery notice on you get back the delivery notice but it will only show you the number not the Name.
This is very annoying when you are sending sms to many contacts.
Is there a work around that?. I contacted the poor online support of Imate and one "not-so-tactful" support lady said "this is what it suppose to do" and they cut me off even before asking my next question to them.
what a shame i-mate has such a poor online support."
Unfortunately I don't think there is. The delivery report comes back from the networks servers with the persons mobile number only. The contact name for that number is stored locally on your phone handset only. What you need is a program that can scan received delivery reports, pull out the number and match it to your contacts database. Far too long winded.
Such a function would probably only benefit someone sending one sms to multiple contacts, then waiting to see who actually received it, so probably not considered by any software developers.
never the less, it is still a shortcoming of the Windows Mobile software, as all nokia phones old and new (even the ancient 8210), and sony ericsson phones can do this!

[Q] Any app to post text and images to Blogger?

The title says it all. I'm looking for an aplication that could connect to my Blogger account and there to post pictures from my phone and text. Older SE phones (Symbian and normal) had this small application. I know I can do this from the browser, even if it doesn't load the posting page properly, but I prefer a small app.
I found Mobile GBlogger and PocketBlogger 1.3, but they both show an error "WebException" when trying to connect.
Anyone found a working program?
Thanks!

Try Shozu
http://www.shozu.com/portal/selfprovisioning.do?operation=startWizard#manu_27
try also moblog 2.2
or maybe tblogger is for you.
I'am using moblog and it works nice. With TBlogger I can't connect at the moment - can't find out why.
It is possible to post in Blogger with emails. Activate that functionality and send whatever you wanna post, via email.
Thank you for your answers.
moBlog can retrieve a list of my posts, but when I try to publish a new one it will always give me the error "There was an error". Also, there is no way to go back when you are in the editing screen.
tBlogger is for Wordpress, i think?
I know about e-mail and MMS posting, but I wanted more control over formatting. It is a good option, though.
ShoZu is close to what I expect, but it doesn't allow me to format the text and images in any way (center and dimensions), most important - the images are stored on their servers (not Google Picasa / Blogger) and each post will contain a rather big ShoZu banner.
The built-in Blogger feature from K850i or K800i, or the application for UIQ phones were simple and easier to use... I guess there is no other choice for Windows Mobile than to go to the site or send by e-mail.
TBlogger has also a MetaWeblogg engine support.
I also have an error when publishing but what I've noticed - my blog was updated even I saw this error.
I'm looking for something else too - those 2 are not my favourites...
I'm upping this thread, maybe someone found an usable Blogger application...

Any anti-stealing apps?

I'm wondering if there's any apps for HD2 that works like "mobile defense" for android that can track the cellphone via a computer and activate the stolen device's GPS to track it.

Here's another one;

Can any of this be activated or monitored by remote PC??? Cuz i actually have a block message service for my cell phone account.
Im using Lookout for mobile

"remotetracker" (no space is intentional)
this is the only anti theft that i managed to install. the other are all too compilcated.
will notify on sim change. sms command are case sensitive. locate command will always tell location unavailable even when google map locked on gps.

F-Secure sms to finland?
I've had F-secure anti-theft in my phone for a while now. The txt location service works great, and last month I tried changing the sim, and guess what, got a sms on my backup phone with the new sim's phone number, which is exactly what it is supposed to do.
However, i checked my itemized bill today, and see the program sent an sms to Finland immediately after texting me. The number was 358400112368 . Googled this number and only got two vague references to f-secure on a nokia. Why in the world would they need to txt their mothership about my sim? Anyone else using f-secure anti-theft? Please check your bill and let us know if it sent a txt to finland.
As far as using other similar programs:
Mylookout : never worked for me, website says searching, and times out.
remotetracker : Stay away from this program!! its txt request uses no password, so anyone who knows you have the program installed can secretly monitor you via sms. An intentional oversight from the developer perhaps? And pretty malicious at that too! Edit: got it, see post below.
ms myphone : free version can only check the daily sync log. I cannot initiate a location search unless i pay, or am I doing it wrong?
so, anyone with f-secure got the txt to 358400112368? I guess this post will be the only 3rd google search result for this number?

yes it does, if you dont set a password then yes, anyone can control it, , but set a password and it doesnt respond to control txts without it.

my bad. thanks Samsamuel for the correction. i re-read the first whole page of that remoteTracker thread and the word "password" was never mentioned in his post or instructions.
as far as my original question regarding F-secure, anybody else see the outgoing text to finland when they change SIMs?
no worries.
i for one can't rate remotetracker highly enough. i cook my own rom, so its cooked in complete with settings, so its completely hard reset safe. only way to stop it working is by flashing.
that random text you mention sounds a little iffy, you tried emailing them? see what they have to say?
another vote for remotetracker.
It found my phone when left in a taxi
the F-Secure thing looks nice, i think im gonna try it this evening
lets see if it really sends a sms to finnland xD
I came across this thread, and just downloaded (didn't install yet) the f-secure app.
A couple things I don't understand.
I believe I have read posts here about needing a "backup mobile number", for the company to send SMS to, if something suspicious is happening with the phone.
But what if one only has one mobile number, no backup? Is the app then useless? (Couldn't there be an e-mail, or a call to the landline?)
Also, I see that besides giving this app away, F-Secure sells "mobile secuirty". (I guess that means anti-virus and such. Is that really necessary? I have never used an AV on my phone before, and never had a problem with that AFAIK.)
With the post about the SMS to Finland (probably company headquarters), it occurs to me, they may give away this anti-theft app, in order to get your phone #, and send you text messages advertising their AV app? I wouldn't want to get spammed with text messages. Has that happened to anyone using this?
remotetracker can send email
i've changed sim few time. fsecure only send sms to the assigned number (i know, i've itemized billing, and i can send sms internationally).
anyway, since it can never reply with correct location, and i've already figured out how to use remotetracker, i'm ditching it too. plus, fsecure will always pop up with it stupid checking for update while i'm using my phone. can't it check quietly?

see my previous post. it always say location not available.
I just tried lookout. I like it more than remotetracker because it's easier to use (the online "dashboard" makes it easy). The thing I hated the most about remotetracker (and other apps dealing with coded SMS) is that I would have to use an authorized phone and the proper codes to do whatever I need to do. At least with lookout, I can just go online and kill all my data and locate my phone.
I tested the "locate" feature. It found my phone in 2 minutes, but it was a little over one mile away from my phone!
The "scream" feature: It's a loud firetruck-type siren...it was a little bad because San Bruno, CA (one city away from me) had a horrible fireball accident a couple of days ago.
I guess it does its job. The locate feature is decent, but to think that it was off by 1-mile, it could make a difference in a big city.

[Q] SMS Random Selection Bug

I've been reading about this bug for awhile now and it finally hit me. What happens is if contact A sends you a txt message and you respond. The message thread will show that your response went to contact A, but the reality is that A may not have received the response, however C,D,E,F, Z,Y and X did! It seems to be totally random, will happen regardless of the SMS app or ROM you use and can be quite dangerous. This bug renders my N1 virtually useless. Anyone else experience this or has an update on the fix for this dangerous bug?
I recommend anyone with an Android phone to be use extreme caution when sending txts or mms messages as you never know who may actually get it
Have read about it, but it's never happened to me.
Can you reproduce the bug reliably?
Can you dump the logs (/proc/kmsg and logcat, or bugreport) immediately after it happens?
Any pattern connecting recipient A and the rest?
Nightmare!

How come that not even one person from those reporting having "this bug", wants to help find out, what it is? Very interesting.
I have found that using handcent resolves this problem for me.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
My wife have experienced the problem twice with Galaxy S, I haven't have similar troubles with my N1, although every now and then it takes time for some messages to go through. That is probably due the carrier, not the device.

I saw the "reports" on the net popping up once in a huge while, but I never saw anyone that would report this bug and actually try to solve it, or assist anyone in solving it. Doesn't look like a normal bug report to me, and doesn't look like there is a bug. I know over 15 people with all kinds of Android, at least 6 with Nexus, and it never happened to anyone. The "bug" looks very fishy.

I can assure it is a bug and a major one. It is well documented if you google it. It appears to be across many different hardware platforms and therefore is most likely a source code issue written incorrectly in the android OS. And just because the 15 people you know aren't having the issue does not mean the rest of the world isn't. This is my 3rd android phone and this is the only one that does it and from I've been reading there are many others who are also having this random issue...I assure you, this isn't something that someone can do by mistake or accident...
In that case, if it's so well documented, how come that nobody has ever assisted anyone else in debugging it, yourself included?
It's happened to me.
I receive certain friend's facebook updates as sms. One time I got the facebook sms. I closed it then replied to another friend's sms. Guess what happened.... what I sent to my friend got sent as a comment to my friend's facebook status.
Looking back at the sms log, I definately wrote my reply to my friend, not the facebook sms, but somehow it was replied to the facebook sms.
This bug has been around since Android existed.
There's really no way to debug this I don't think, unless you only have a few contacts that will text u if you write something weird... cuz having a phone full if phone numbers, your text can be sent to any number, even non mobile phones, you wont know since you thought u texted the right person.
Sent from my Nexus One
There's a ton of ways to debug everything, including even specifically modified SMS app for dumping debug data - it's an open OS, yes? If I got some beta application versions for debugging from app devs to test things, I'm sure Google wouldn't do less to debug it.
For starters, the next SMS I'll check the records in kernel log and see if there's any useful data to start from there.

Well I think you bring up two entirely non-related issues... First, if you google it, you will find a vast amount of people all having that same issue, which in my mind establishes the "well documented" part of my statement. Secondly, as far as me or anyone else participating in debugging, I would love to, but it's a little out of my sphere of knowledge. If you could give me a little insight into what needs to be done, I would be more than happy to do what I can to help solve the problem. This $500 phone is totally useless to me if I can't be certain who will be receiving my txt messages. Mainly, I've been waiting and watching in the hopes that google would get involved and resolve this issue without my having to get involved. It would appear that this goes back a considerable amount of time.
Can you list out a step by step process to go about this so that all who are having this issue can also participate? What should be my next step
To even try to start with debug, you have to have a rooted phone.
The useful place to look at would be /proc/kmsg. The question is - how much data it contains after sending sms. I didn't try to dump it after SMSing yet, didn't have time for it. I'll try to find time over the weekend.
If it won't contain enough data, modification in SMS application is needed, to dump the data there to help with debug. This is much harder for me, because I'm not an app dev, and I'll have a hard time trying to find and understand the relevant data structures to dump there. Basically, when you hit "reply", some kind of indicator of current SMS thread needs to be dumped, and everything else that might result in wrong number being selected - all the chain that determines the number that the SMS goes to. Then, once the SMS was sent to wrong recipient, the info needs to be dumped and checked.
The later part is "slightly" beyond my skills. It requires knowledge of SMS application and its data structures.
It obviously happens only to those that have their Facebook contacts integrated, so the mechanisms that take care of joined contacts might be something to look at.
It never happened to me, and I've sent 12000 sms from my Nexus. Try using Handcent until this is officially fixed. Handcent is free and many people say it's not affected by the bug.

This is why I haven't, as you say, participate in resolving the issue...the level of of debugging required to get to the source of the problem is deeper than a non-developer like myself can go. And for the record, this is NOT related to the facebook app in anyway as I do not even have that app installed. This is 100% an Android code issue...
Are all your contacts Gmail-synced contacts?
Does it happen frequently enough to try to debug?
This is what happens with my N1:
I get a new text message, alerted in my notification bar
Rather than open it from the notification bar, I open the messaging app and tap the first message (just a habit, I guess)
The ninth message opens instead of the first one
I'm not sure if this happens every single time, but it does happen frequently.
I'm wondering if it might be a bug in CyanogenMod instead, I've only started noticing it recently.
PS: I do not have a Facebook account nor any accounts synced with it. The only contacts I sync are my Google contacts.

I just checked and I see a "Caller ID and spam protection" but it is off
I am having this exact same problem and I found the exact same detail when I did my Google searching.
This only recently started and I have no idea how or why. And if I search for this app or for a setting nothing comes up. When the window pops up you can turn off the settings and I've done it about 10 times and it always turns them back on.
This is annoying the hell out of me but I want it turned off but I simply cannot find any way to access it other than when it pops up

Does your carrier offer any kind of spam protection? I am with T-Mobile and they do have Caller ID service with Spam block. Another carrier Verizon, also offers something similar.

There is a window that pops up with this app and on it is the settings icon and a privacy policy link. if you click that link you can do some detective work to determine it's this company.

On unlocked devices there is a setting, but someone already reported that it is not turned on, still it would be good idea give a carrier a call and find out. I have used T-Mobile app to access my account and there was a section on my plan where I could select paid service or use the free one(they are different) and it mentioned caller id and spam block. It is possibly that it was enabled not on your phone, but on your carriers side and it could very well be a free service. I think Play Store has an app called "Hiya - Caller ID & Block" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.webascender.callerid That is what unlocked S8 is using when users enabled it in phone app.

I am not on an unlocked device so it is definitely not that. And it's also somewhat new is not always happened. And yes it is a free service because within the app popup when you check the settings it eludes to this.
I have done pretty extensive searches on my phone within settings & certain logical apps and there is no way to get access to whatever this is if it is an app or a setting. The only access to any settings related to this app or when it pops up but like I said you can shut the whole app off and it just turns itself back on and undoes your settings. Whatever this is you can't get to it directly.

I understand, but what I was trying to say for example on unlocked devices there is a toggle for that kind of service which lets user know about spam and caller ID, but on carrier devices this feature is removed because carriers have their own service that they like to charge user for. My device for example doesn't show anything like I saw in the screenshots. You can open settings and type "notification access" in the search and it will show you the list of apps that have access. See if you can find it there and take appropriate action.

It is really annoying me too. I might just end up formatting my phone if I don't any solution soon. A guy on another thread about this said he formatted but then it came back.

Does your carrier offer any kind of spam protection? I am with T-Mobile and they do have Caller ID service with Spam block. Another carrier Verizon, also offers something similar.

Not that I know of. I doubt it but I will find out
Same Caller ID problem
Did anyone find a solution to this random caller id app issue? I have been having the same problem which began about a week ago...

Hey, someone from another thread found a solution. I cleared my Chrome history, cookies, and all synced data and I haven't had the issue anymore. I didn't format my phone tho
Edit: nvm, it came back so gonna format my phone and see if it finally disappears
Edit: AFter formatting, it's been a day, I restored my apps and data but it hasn't appeared anymore
Here is the link to his solution: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73750558&postcount=13
Hi am having the exact same problem and haven't found a solution yet. Its driving me crazy!
I am using a Samsung S8 and this app/feature literally appeared out of no where.
Any help or leads would greatly be appreciated!
I've been having the same exact issues that started a few weeks ago. I'm using a Samsung galaxy s6 edge from T-Mobile. I'm going to go into the store tomorrow to see if they can offer any solutions. This app is incredibly annoying! Especially since it wasn't authorized to start sending notifications!
I've messaged the email address they gave on the privacy policy asking how to discontinue the services. I got an email back with what I assume is Chinese characters in the body of the email and photos showing what to do. Worked for about a day and then came right back. I'll update if T-Mobile has any useful tips.

So I didn't get to go to the T-Mobile store but coincidentally I was uninstalling apps that I don't use a few days after I made that post. I ended up uninstalling 2 apps, one of which was viva video and I think this might have been the root of the problem. Last time I clicked on that app, it looked completely different and I wouldn't have recognized it as viva video if the name wasn't there. I also noticed that the app will open and run by itself but will not show up in my open apps list (hopefully that makes sense). Even when I had not used it for days, it would still show up in my battery optimization list as an app that needs to be closed. Must be a bug with the new face life. Haven't had any issues since then. I really hope this helps.
