Question about the call log - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Seems that whenever I disconnect a phone call, the call log is automatically displayed. Other phones I've used return you to the home screen when disconnecting a phone call. Why would I need to view the call log after hanging up (I know who I just talked to so why would I need to see it...). I know it's easy to press the button to close the log but this is just one of those little quirks I find annoying.
Is there a setting I'm missing to return to the home screen when a call is finished?
Thanks for any help.

I dunno... I kinda like it staying in the phone app. And it kind of makes sense if you're disconnected and need to call back (or need to make another call and get back to that person).

I have no idea why anyone ever thought that was a good idea, but there's an app to fix that. I've used it on all my Android phones, and it works well.

Just for info: Some Custom ROMs have a setting in the dialer app to exit after the call instead of going to the call log. I don't know why anyone would want that either...

Thanks to all for the replies. I ended up creating a Tasker profile to take it back to the home screen upon ending a phone call. (works great).

Probably in case of dropped calls? I can see that being the reason.

cprog.exe and missed calls

Ok... I think i need some help here. I wrote an app that would screen save and trap all the keys (even the red and green phone keys). I did this according to the following post.
http://www.xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3665
Then i wrote some tapi stuff to listen for an incoming call and restart cprog.exe after the first ring. Only problem is, cprog.exe seems to need the LINEDEVSTATE_NUMCALLS (0x0800) notification or it will not log the call as missed. It can never get that notification, cause that is the first thing i can trigger off of. So... cprog.exe does not log the call as missed. If i answer the call, then it is logged...
I was hoping i could do one of the following:
1. Write the missed call to the log myself.
2. find a way to trap the keys without killing cprog.exe
3. Fake a LINEDEVSTATE_NUMCALLS (0x0800) dev state change message to cprog.exe
or worse case (which i don't like at all)
4. Keep my own call log which means i will have to write my own call log app.
or even worse still...
5. Just be happy with the screen saved, but the keys unlocked and hope that i don't make 3 hour "prank" calls of me singing along in the car to the radio on some friend's voice mail.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone needs to see the code that i used to detect the ringing and stuff... let me know... i can post it up.
thanks,
John
Being as you know you missed the call, you could just put the relevant information into the call log database.
Thanks... i didn't realize that existed, but i figured something was there like that.
Unfortunately for this app... but fortunately for everything else, i upgraded to WM2003... so now, i don't need this as much because the now the GPRS stays connected even in suspend mode (which locks the keys).
It also seems that 2003 behaves differently with respect to screen power. It seems 2003 automatically turns screen power back on in the event of a window focus change... so my app needs to be rethought now.
thanks for the help,
John
Hi John
Did you ever find how to add/insert your call into the log?
It seems that ther is no API to do it (there is an API to query the log...).
Any thoughts?

Streak while using phone annoyances

When I call my voicemail [using google voice] it wants me to enter my pin.
1. Isn't there a way to program the dialer to pause, then enter the pin automatically?
2. I notice that the phone acts very quirky when on a call. In order to do anything when on a call I have to turn it so that it is in portrait mode, not landscape because it sort of 'sleeps' once I am on a call.
3. Being the phone wants to sleep when I am on a call, I can't seem to find a way to get back to the phone app and hit the RED 'end' button at times ..
Sort of hard to explain but maybe someone can do a better job if you have found the same problem. I love this BIG phone. I wouldn't even object to an extended battery.

Don't know about point 1 but i have just read that when making a phone call it has to be in portrait mode and as you bring it up to your face the proximity sensors will turn off your display to prevent unintentional touches is that what you were on about or have i got it all wrong
I don't understand all the technical stuff but to hold it, it has to be in portrait mode, but even if you have the speaker on and it is on it's back on the table, you can't press the keypad [once the call has begun] unless it is in portrait mode. I would like to turn off 'sleep' while I am on a call .. REALLY annoying.
SUGGESTION: Don't make any prank calls until you know that phone inside and out because sometimes hanging up the phone is close to impossible. Unless it's just me.

AHHHH so its you makeing all the prank calls to me LOL.
It dosen't say anything in the manual on turning off the sleep i will do a google and have a look
sssshhhh ... don't tell .. I have lots more calls to make
But seriously .. I called to check my voice mail and somehow the dialpad went off the screen .. Tried pushing buttons, but there apparently isn't one that will bring it back up .. Mean while I hear the recording saying the same "enter your 4 digit pin over and over." I would if I could find the dial pad again !!! Same if you are leaving a message .. if the screen sleeps, you are fumbling around trying to get it to come back up to click END.
Yes i have had quite some issues with it as a phone, specially when it rings but the screen is still in sleep mode for some reason. So you have to turn it on from sleep then hit the unlock before answering. This is a long process to accept phone calls, also when you answer the phone my ears always seem to hit the screen which triggers the apps menu....
I have had it since launch day and been trying to use it as a primary phone but i don't think thats working out. But as an MID its amazing I love using it, the screen is nice and great using it a a ebook reader.
When I get a phone call my screen comes on, unlocked and ready to answer.
My slight issues are my face is too small to go from the ear piece to the mic LoL
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I too am having the same issues as many on here.
A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G is what it is!
I can;t even hear anything out of the earpiece in the phone, although i can if i turn it on speaker...not a happy bunny as now i have to wait for a replacement!
One question tho, which has been driving me insane...
Does anyone know if there is some kind of 'file-explorer' for accessing the conent on the SD card?
The only way i've found so far to even get close to the files is through 'QuickOffice'... Would've thought they'd be a more 'convenient' approach to it...
Any ideas?
Yesterday I purchased a program called 'screeb.' It is supposed to be able to prevent 'sleep' when you are actually still using it among other things like battery saving things .. I haven't tested it yet but maybe others have ??

There are several free file explorers in the Market .. As for sound.. are you sure you are putting the right end to your ear ?? Seriously .. It would be easy to make that mistake when everything is dark ..

Yeah, definetly got it at the right ear
Will have a look round for a file explorer then, i just thought it would have came with one...silly me! lol!
If I had the phone on speaker and put it to my ear it would deafen me I think. Speaker is VERY loud. Could it be that you have the TTY feature turned on? [ I think that is what it is called, not even sure what it does.] I just can't understand why it won't work as a phone.
I have been trying to use BT only when using it as a phone. I am very afraid my earrings are going to scratch the screen.
I was trying to decide if maybe I should put the sim from my streak back into my iphone and then move the sim from my HTC Shift into the Streak until I got more used to using it. Especially if I am going to use it a lot for voice. I also use my phone for data more than voice.
ALSO .. wondering what an extended battery would be like .. Make it harder to hold? or give you something to hold on to... Right now my hand has to really stretch to grasp the phone ..
ANYWAY ... enough with all this thinking .. I should have been at work 15 minutes ago and I haven't even gotten in the shower.

I love British expressions ... Lately I notice that people in the USA are using them more and more .. The one that annoys me the most .. BECAUSE IT IS NOT OURS TO USE is the expression "gone missing." Everyone who is missing has "gone missing" and until about 1 or 2 years ago it belonged to YOU ... What I am trying to say is I like when YOU use them, but when WE do it sounds WRONG.

Your voice mail issue should be fixed by downloading the tmobile visiual voice mail its simple fast free. Also your sleep issues should be fixed with 2.2. I know with my N1 when I move the down it turns on.

I have everything with Tmobile but it won't let me install tmobile visual voice. Actually it says it is installed, but I can't activate it.
Just got off the phone with Tmobile and they turned on Visual Voice for me. Good. Next on the agenda is when a call ends getting back the dial pad so I can hang up ...

1. You can long press * on dialpad, it will show "p", then enter pin.
It can also be used in the contacts (just type p).
2. no idea...
3. Tried power on key ?
Maybe I throw my hands in the air to fast, but I shut off google voice and went back to tmobile 'visual voicemail.' It is sort of the same but I will miss google's voice to text translation via email SOOOOO MUCH ... It is probably the most entertaining application that I have ever had. I like to forward them to the person who left the voicemail and say "what?????"
It seems funny. But I can't use google voice here ;-(

[Q] Google Voice - Can't Press 1 to accept + Greeting is cut off

I just installed Google Voice on my Epic 4G and received my first phone call on it - and was unable to answer. Two problems - first, when I answered, the greeting telling me to press "1" to accept was cut off at the beginning (all I heard was '...all from [spoken voice]. Press 1 to accept".
I can get past that, but then when I pulled up the dial pad to press 1, I was unable to. I pounded on the "1," was sure it was showing up, but it would not answer the call. I tried enabling audible touch tones but that didn't work, and I don't think there's a setting on the epic to change between long/short touch tones.
Does anyone know what's going on with this?

I think the second problem is a bug. It's not related to google voice but the phone itself. The dialpad is not very responsive when you take the phone off your face and the screen is back on. Wait a few seconds, and it'll be back again.
It happened all the time when I called any customer service number and tried to use the dialpad to choose in the menu.
Bigger problem

I never had the phone to my face when I did my test calls - this was always phone in my hand and calling from my office phone.
I think I just came across a bigger problem - the dialpad doesn't work on incoming calls. I just called my phone from my office on the regular (not G-voice) number and pushed a bunch of buttons, and couldn't hear the tones.
You can disable the initial greeting and go straight to the call when you pick up. It is under Voice Setting in your google voice account. I know this doesn't address your unresponsive screen issue, but it's a temporary work around until your dialpad gets fixed.

Is this actually a bug? I posted another thread here and am trying to have people verify whether or not this is a real issue - if it's not a bug then I definitely need to replace the phone, 'cuz it's been factory reset as of last night.

[Q] Issue with Call-Waiting

Have a weird issue with my call waiting -- it just seems to go through and switch me over without notice and without my input. I'll be talking to someone, and then suddenly I'm talking to someone else .. ?!?!
Anyone else having this issue? I don't even hear a -beep- like my old phones which used to warn me of a second call ..
My theory is that when the call comes through the screen lights-up and waits for my input and perhaps my face is accepting the change-over?!
If I hold the phone and use speakerphone, I see the prompt for the second-call ..
any help appreciated!
Exactly same isssue..
Your theory is right, i'm experienced twice at least today.. There is a big green button at lower screen area while call waiting state.. It's too easy to activate one of them accidentally with your face..
Anyway, i want to change dialer, but every dialer app only change dialer, but "on-call screen" stay stock one which i don't like...
Any suggestions ?

Sorry, hadn't seen your response ---
I still haven't resolved this issue either .. very annoying. I'm talking to one person then all of a sudden I'm speaking to someone else.
I've tried to reproduce the problem by having a conversation and having someone then call me .. but I couldn't .. this time I heard the call-waiting beep and it didn't switch over, it waited for my input.
When I get 'the issue', it just switches over to the other call without my permission and it terminates the first call.
I'm wondering if this is a fault with my phone, or an issue with the pseudo-roms i have on my phone like Gingerblur, gladiatrix, etc --- or the dialer itself .. shrug
no one else experience this?

2 incredibly annoying android issues

first issue it's incredibly annoying when I am leaving a message on someone else's voicemail and they call me and I can't find a way to quickly hang up and switch to the other call. surely there is an option I am missing that allows you to hang up the call you're on an answer the other 1 but I end up hanging up on the person calling.
second I can't find a way to hang up the phone if I inadvertently switch from the phone to the home screen. is there a button that always hangs up the phone when you aren't on the phone dialer screen?
Notification, expand the current call one and there would be hang up.

When you get a call when you're already in one you can swipe to answer the incoming call. On the AOKP ROM there is a hangup button in the notification panel. If you're not running that ROM you can always just go back to the phone app then hang up.

HOW DO YOU HANG UP WHEN NOT ON THE DIALER SCREEN???
its like an adventure in frustration to accidently call someone and frantically try to navigate through multiple screens looking for the damn dialer screen so you can hit the red bar

how???? the only options avaliable are for the incoming call "answer/ignore/text"
if i answer..then the other call is on hold and i'm bouncing around through screens again looking to find a way to (a) switch calls..(b) hang up the old one...(c) take the other one off hold.
that is super unwieldy especially when you're like 'hello??? hello??' making sure the other person is still on the line and the proxmity sensor keeps cutting in and out while you're trying to look at the damn phone, listen for the other person..look to see if you've managed to switch over...hit more buttons...listen for the other person..make sure you hung up on the wrong person...and then look for the 'hold' button flag and turn that off.
check accessibility, power button to end calls for accidental calls

Go into settings, accessibility and check "Power button ends call". If you need more than that, you might have to write your own script, app, etc.
Just don't hit your power button when in a call you actually want to be in.
Oh, republicano, you beat me to it.

THANK YOU!!! :good:
going out of my mind on this one. its super embarrassing when you accidently call someone you were about to send a text to and say 'i'm not available' and they're on the line going 'hello? hello?' while i'm trying to figure out how to hang up on them without speaking.
the power button is better than nothing.
the 2 line management is atrocious.
i bet i call someone at least 2-3x a week and get their voicemail and as i'm leaving a message for them..they call back.
then i'm in android-phone-hell trying to do something that *SHOULD* be a no-brainer.
i can't be the only one this happens to all the time. if i'm in a car its even worse (yeah yeah dont use the phone while driving) because i'm about to swerve off the road trying to look down at the phone 15x to switch calls and hang up on the old one.
what usually happens is
A. i answer the other call and leave a 20 minute blank voicemail on the original line which google leaves politely open the whole time i'm on the other call.
B. hang up on the incoming call in my attempt to hang up the call i'm on and have to call the other person back again and hope they pick up. this is DEATH if you're waiting on a callback from a customer service person.
this is horrible design. i know i'm not the only this happens to all the time.

ok, this is a half-ass feature. it 'kind of' works but doing my experiment (on call with someone when new call comes in) the power button does freaking NOTHING. it doesn't try to hang up either call.
it only works if you are on a call and someone else isn't trying to call in.
*sigh*

Maybe it was Cyanogen or just older Android but I could have sworn there was a "Hangup and Answer" option. I used to use this all the time when I was calling someone and their voicemail picked up but they called me right back before I could leave a message, I would just tap that option and it would end the current call and answer the new one.
I agree though, it's weird but thanks for the notification window tip. I totally forgot about that option

I tried the notification trick.. No love. You can't pull anything down while on a call unless maybe you're talking about a custom ROM.
Seems your phone is frozen when there is an incoming call. All you can do is answer text or ignore.

I'm missing that option. I recently bought a Sony XperiaZ and there was an option to "hang up and answer". I'm sure of it and was really appreciating it. But I didn't like the phone and just bought a Nexus 5. I'm on Cataclysm custom rom but I don't see anything like that to make our lives easier.
