Cracked the glass in my s3: recommend some options? - Galaxy S III General

I got my s3 in September and recently it fell out of my pocket (less than two feet from the ground) and the corner cracked all the way up the side. Right around where the back "button" is. It is hardly on the screen so its not really in the way, but its still very annoying to look at.
As I see it I have a few options
I can bring it into Telus and they can replace the entire screen which would cost me like $250 or so. Because I went to them and they said that they do not do glass only repairs.
I can try to replace the screen myself. I'm sure I would be able to do it, even though I have seen a few videos and it looks quite tedious and risky.
I could try calling Samsung and seeing if they would do anything about it. I have heard a story of someone calling and they did replace it. I imagine I would have to do some pouting and complain about how they said they're gorilla glass was phenomenal. Please let me know if this has worked for you.
And my last option would be leaving it the way it is and waiting for it to spread even more. (Not a fan of this one)
Also since I'm here, can anyone recommend a sturdy yet slim case for the s3? I'm not a huge fan of the otter box but I would like something fairly strong and not too expensive. Links would be great!
Thanks for any help you guys can give.

Well for that I'm sure they could say they never said it was shatter proof and it's still glass

I know, but a foot and a half? It should be able to withstand something so minor, this is "regular use". Maybe I should sue the company that makes my pants for having such tiny pockets.

I would be writing a nice polite letter to Samsung first a letter not email .

Drop anything made of glass onto a solid floor and there's an excellent chance it will break, especially on the corners. Good luck with getting it fixed but a £3 rubber boot from Amazon will protect all the corners but only add 2mm to the thickness.

But seriously, it would be nice to know what caused it so we all know just how fragile these things are. I'm real careful with mine, but if you dropped it while taking a dump or something, I'm investing in some fully body armor...
It slipped out of my hands grabbing it off the desk cradle late at night. Hit my roomates fridge, my fridge, and my bed before landing face down on the tile. 5 foot drop. No protection. I use a silicon case to give it some bulk during the day, not at night. Tiny chip... period sized. On the screen.

It's called GENERAL CHAT. If you don't like GENERAL CHAT then don't come into this sub forum, it's really not that complicated of a concept.
I'm rocking a silicon case on mine right now, makes it a bit more sticky and bigger. I wasn't ever able to use the tiny buttons before, lol.

Exactly, I use my phone a lot in class to surf the web and supplement the lecture. (I'm a geek get over it) I also leave it on vibe. Not only was the vibe incredibily loud plastic on desk or book, but since the back is so slippery it would easy move around and not stay put.
The silicon case let's it grip the surface its on and drastically quiets the vibe noises. It also gives it some bulk which I quite appreciate when carrying it around

This is why I want an Otterbox. This phone feels so fragile. My Droid was thick and bulky and a tank, but Samsung isn't great with build quality. I love the phone I just need to be careful until I get a case.

It took 4 drops in a drop test. It can take a bit of a beating, but nothing like my Droid could. It's so strange moving to a phone that is so light. If you take off the battery cover the phone is amazingly thin. What really makes it seem weak is that you can tap the screen and feel the vibrator moving.
You can do that on my eris too. At first I thought there was something wrong with it until I felt others do it too, even the incredible "does"

Gorilla glass does not make a phone invincible dude. It is just a lot more damage resistant. Even in *proper* tests they arent showcasing the lack of damage, they are showcasing how little damage it took versus what would have happened to a normal glass screen. I already said above the GG is why im still using my phone now, but what was also stated above is that it took 4 drops to kill it in a drop test, which I can confirm.

Even though I like the concept of though, nearly shatter proof glass (plastic) it's ashame that my eris and blackberry storm, both have scratch proof glass and yet my samsung doesn't. Sure I don't have to worry about breaking my screen, but I never broke either of those screens either, but now I gotta worry about scratches which means back to screen protectors; back to pain in the butt installs!

Screen cracked!

So..I dropped my lovely new TMO sgs3 from about 10-12 inches onto a hard surface. The screen cracked in two places from the left to the right side. LCD is fine but glass is fully cracked. It seems that this is beyond unacceptable for "gorilla glass."
I called Tmobile customer service who were useless and suggested a pay $150 for an insurance replacement.
What should I do guys? Do I go to Samsung? The retailer (Walmart)?

How is it a defect, because you dropped your phone and the GLASS cracked? Bad luck? Yes. Defect? No. Even Gorilla Glass can crack. It is not invulnerable to damage resulting from drops. There is nobody to run to, as the damage is a result of your handling/mishandling of the device. There is nobody to foot that bill except for you. Sorry it happened, but that's just how it goes. Sometimes you can drop your phone and get lucky, and sometimes you drop it, and you aren't so lucky. It all depends on how it falls, and what it falls on.

He cant sell the phone because asurion will ask for the phone back. The only thing you can do is pay the deductible for a new phone. Even though its gorilla glass, once you drop it on that certain angle the screen will definitely crack.

If you used a credit card to purchase the phone and it provides warranty coverage you should check to see if accidental damage is covered. I know my card covers loss/damage for the 1st 90 days in addition to extending the normal warranty.
ETA: You can keep the phone and later see if you can purchase replacement glass. Sell it after fixing it.

He's right. It's common sense to know that the bigger the screen on the phone the more prone it will be to damage. Having a 4.8" screen is amazing but it also makes the phone very fragile. Gorilla Glass 2 to my understanding is basically there to protect the screen from light damage such as scratches/scuffs. Sadly you had a case of bad luck, dropped your phone, and the screen cracked.
There's nothing more to it than you need to be a little more careful next time with such an expensive device. Considering the phone outright sells for $600 I don't think $150 is that bad for a replacement. Good luck.
I agree with everybody on here and to be honest it was your fault. You should of gotten a case of some sort.
I hope you get your phone fixed/replaced.
it does seem this phone is more prone to screen damage than others before it to be honest.....I have personally seen my Samsung Fascinate and Charge take falls from several feet to concrete and spend all their time in a pocket with keys and get tossed around and never even suffered a scratch or crack.....and all that with no case or screen protector either.....

Also depends on your life, like me i work under houses, in attics, tight places with dirt, dust and damp areas. A tough case like the otterbox ones is a must for my line of work.

Was it the double dip or the double dip flip? I really want the double dip but all I've been hearing is stories about the case scratching the phone when you take it on and off....I switch phones almost every day, and I've heard it's a pretty tight fit and you can hear the case "grinding" the phone. Wish they would have put some "velvet" or something on the inside to pad the phone

I can totally believe this. I have had this phone for almost 3 months now and was probably amongst the first 20 people in the world to own it. As I am clumsy, I dropped the phone from my jackets top pocket (so slightly above chest height) straight onto hard wood floor and it made a horrific sound. Had the phone for a few hours and was in shock, picked it up and to my absolute surprise it was perfect, nothing, not even a single scratch or dent.

Oleophobic coating wearing off after a month??

I've only had my phone for about a month now, and there is already a rough spot developing in the lower-center of the screen where my thumb goes.
Has anyone else already started experiencing this problem? It's very irritating, my thumb kind of sticks to it now, makes the use of swype keyboard cumbersome at times.

Unfortunately, your situation is the reason most people put at least some sort of screen protector on their phone within a week or so of purchase.
Perhaps there will be some way to have a new coating applied? I have never experienced this problem before so I'm not sure how commonplace this is but logic would suggest there is a way to do it.
There's a coating sold at amazon that supposedly works well but is a little expensive for the amount you are given.
I've heard that Windex and dish washing soap are also bad for the oleophobic coating. I don't have evidence or links to support that. Just repeating what I remember reading somewhere.
As for my phone, I've had it two weeks. Screen still looks brand new.
Seriously, I'd take it back as a default.
They may assume you cleaned it or have some type of chemical on you fingers but that shouldn't matter.

My top left area of the screen is showing marks and scuffs in the oleophobic coating, I wonder if there is a warranty exchange that can be done.
I went to the AT&T store today to see if they would replace it. They wouldn't, because I missed my 14-day mark by two days; I got this phone on the 7th of May.. So I haven't even had it a month like I thought.
They said I would have to do a warranty exchange; however, I'm not sure if I really want to do that, since the rep said that they will send me a refurb and not a new phone.
I feel for you. This is not meant to be a troll comment but that is big reason I like buying Apple so if you have an issue you can exchange at the store. Samsung seems to make good stuff but I don't like refurbished stuff either.

The Damage Thread. Have you defiled your phone's appearance yet?

So I just woke up to a knick on the side of my phone this morning. Nothing major by any stretch but nevertheless if your like me it bothers you to death and you can't stop looking at it. So I'm wondering if anyone else out there has make a mark on their baby yet. (Side note: the fake metal sides are cheap af. Haha, the other day I was driving a fork lift truck at work like I usually do and I guess I was going to fast when I hit a bump and my phone flew to where my feet was and then to the ground face down. Luckily the only damage done was a tiny nick to the screen that you can't even tell it's there unless I point it out. It was bugging me to death the first few hours but now I barely notice it. Can't be seen with screen on either. I was rather disappointed to. I have a phone cover on it and it shouldn't of gotten scratched but oh well. It could of been worse.
I have some hits on the frame around the screen, 2 scratches on back cover and 2 more barely noticable on the screen. That's it.
The world played out in slow motion the first time I dropped my phone. At this point though there are a few very minor scratches along the edge of the phone around the screen.
hairline crack across the bottom microphone. NEVER dropped it. Do you guys confirm this is a more widespread issue?

but the bizarre thing is that I'm pretty friendly with how I use the phone...I never dropped it yet.. using a thin back case..
weird...I think LG should work better on durability...
Even though the back of the G3 looks and feels great

Same thing. Dropped it once while drunk but even before that I had these weird little scratches on the back. No clue where they are from.
Hairline crack at IR port. Will try and get a free replacement in a couple of weeks using warranty
Had my phone bare naked for few weeks and dropped if few times, had in my pocket with keys and change. No scratches or anything anywhere. I don't even think I'll be getting a screen protector since this baby is one tough son of a female dog.

I dropped mine from about 2.5 feet and it put one long crack through the screen and nothing to one side of it worked. $156 LCD/digitizer replacement through LG. I feel your pain.
Edit: I forgot to mention this happened with the Spigen Slim Armor case on.

Wow... With SPIGEN on dude? I always thought that those cases were awesome.
It must have landed on a corner.
I just got the same case today. I could see it not providing much protection if it lands on the ground on the corners. The top and back are just rubber.
I love the case though. Not sure how much protection it offers from drops.

You probably got dirt grains in between the case and phone.

So did I. The case is nice and doesn't add bulk. It would probably offer more protection if it were a little softer rubber.

Yep, right on the corner. Funny how Spigen advertises "Absolute Drop Protection" and "Air cushion corners". Lol

Jesus, i bought one of those but I hasn't arrived so far. I using a regular tpu case
It's still a great case and I think it provides decent protection unless dropped in a certain way.
The case looks beautiful and I love the way the camera is separated from the volume.
I'm happy with it so far and still much better than bare bones.

I ran an apple background for a little while. That's all the defiling so far.
