Exchange Contacts NOT syncing! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I set up the exchange server (as I did on many other Android devices before)and it is not syncing contacts at all! Emails and calendar did sync but not the contacts.

I was just curious if you found a fix for this? I just purchased a Nexus 4 & 10; both sync my email & calendar fine from exchange 2010 - but none of my contacts are being pulled in.

No I didn't find a permanent solution. What I did was download a third party software (think it was touchdown) trial and once my contacts were synced I moved them to phone contacts and un installed the software.

Gotcha, and thanks for the reply! I did something similar; in Outlook I exported all of my contacts to a CSV file, then on the gmail website I went to contacts and imported them and they came through to my phone fine - just fyi if anyone else reads this thread.
Kind of annoying to have to go round about that way; but hopefully it will get fixed in a future update and I can delete all of my work contacts from my personal gmail account.
FYI, I've called google tech support and they've elevated my case to a developer that is supposed to send me an email - I'll post hear if they actually tell me something usefull.

But we shouldn't have to do that though (I mean importing our contacts). We use Exchange in the workplace, and to be honest they wouldn't be happy if I copied the contacts to my personal account. This worked on other Android phones (One S, Nexus S etc) but for some reason just doesn't work on devices with Unified Storage (Nexus 4/7)
I thought the 4.2.2 update would solve this but unfortunately not. It's a shame because the Nexus was supposed to be a solid phone but all it's doing is losing my trust.

Please note that mine is now working after a security update o kosek the exchange server. We use exchange 2007. I can get you the technical details of it might help you.

I noticed that it didn't prompt me to allow device administrator until I exited and reopened email. And it won't let me do anything until that happens. Are you able to send a test email? If you can send email it should grab the contacts automatically. Also obviously check the settings in settings>>account settings>>corporate(or whatever yours is called) and maybe double check the server settings.

Also if your server is on your LAN it helps to be connected to the WiFi during set up.
You can always remove the account and re add it.

Also try checking the "accept all certificates" box during setup

Is there a fix for this bug? I just got a Nexus 4 and I can't sync my contacts. My old phone doesn't take the micro sim, so I can't switch back.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Google Can't / Won't Help
From Google Support phone call:
Initially they told me to type my contacts in one at a time into the phone. Then they told me the following.
"We're unable to describe how to setup email on your android device, that's beyond our capabilities. You can go to this site to get information on setting up GMail via IMAP (not what I was asking for). If that isn't what you need there's nothing we can do for you and we'll have to have you return it." ... "Yes you'll be responsible for shipping"
I've been running Android on a variety of devices dating back to 2.2. I've never had any problems syncing my exchange contacts before. This is REALLY annoying.

Ryan,
I was able to fix this problem. I honestly don't remember exactly how it was done but I found the solution on XDA itself. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I had this issue ages ago but was fixed with the Android update. Way before 4.3 was released. Are you sure you're fully up to date?

SGS2 ICS 4.0.3 I9100XLP7 XSE Email sync issue

Hi,
i think there might be some people who had just updated their SGS2 to the latest ICS might face same issue, so i started a thread here.
i will first illustrate what i encounter.
1. i have trying to sync my company email through SGS2 email app, through Microsoft Activesync option.
2. i key in the correct email address password, press on Micorsoft Activesync, the app will link me to key in domain info, email server info, SSL info, etc
3. sync option/setting and sync email/calendar/contacts by default, choose push method to sync.
4. click next and securities is enforced to my phone
5. now the sync is started.
sync of Contacts and Calendar works alright(i have not found any obvious problem so far)..
but i found problem in sync of email. the syncronization is slow(in both 3G and Wifi network). it always sync halfway(eg. choose to sync email for 1 day), and only have maybe 20 emails syncs and it will stop syncing. when press Refresh, it says "connection error(email name)".
i tried to send out email using this email app, it works...
this really puzzle me.. is it that i setup the email wrongly? or there is really some bug in this app??
Note: when i was using Gingerbread, the email app works perfectly, and sync using push method is almost the same pace as my laptop MS Outlook.
please dont flame on me. any suggestions/inputs/experience are welcome.
thanks.

from what i have read in the past few days, its a known issue and i think there isn't a fix for it yet.
Thanks for you comment. Seems like not many people discuss about this. No new thread about this. Hence I open a new thread.
Anyone has similar experience or had no problem at all please fell free to comment.

Hi mokkimhong
I'm having the same issue. It works perfectly on WIFI, but as soon as a switch to Cellular it stops working.
I have recreated the Account from scratch using Cellular connection, then it works for a few minutes/hours. Suddenly it will just stop with the same error you are getting.
After that I'm forced to used WIFI only. Very frustrating!!!
Anyone have a fix, please post.
Thanks!
same thing here, even when i run ICS custom ROMs
there's already a thread about this, with more details on the problems and bugs. also for some users / exchange types, there seem to be some workarounds: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545986

Ya I was in that boat... Set my retrieval size to 100kb and changed my push settings to 5min intervals and all seems fine now. Not the best I know but a decent work-around until this is sorted out.
Thanks heldchen

Hi,
I am also facing the same issues (same device and same os). Please tell some solution or better alternative free apps which i can use instead to ms active sync.
Advance Thanks ...
---------- Post added at 11:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:13 AM ----------
Hey guys,
There is solution for that active sync problem, just try setting "Size to retrieve emails = 100 kb". Its working for me ...
hi guys, just realised this problem with my SGS II. Running on ICS 4.0.3 and push with full email retrieval isn't working on stock Gmail...
For now sync manually, however noticed that Calendar and Contacts are ok...
I have had the same problem. I'm using ICS 4.0.3 in a Samsung Galaxy 2
Since I'm updated to ICS, I've lost my corporate mails (gmail worked fine).
I've deleted and re-created my account several times. Yesterday, I realized that one more day had been added to my email's list. Current setup established 2 weeks sync and my retrieval size to 100kb
What I did was to set my retrieval size to Total and reduce the sync to only three days. Ta daaaaaaaaaaa. It has been working for two complete days now.
Hope this helps
Best

Calendar not syncing?

Any1 having issues with their Google Calendar not syncing?
This is my first Nexus 7 - 32GB
OS - 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Stock
Can't get any entries onto my N7 calendar widget.
Is it a 4.1.2 issue or my user error?
Did you enable calendar sync in /settings/accounts/Google?
Is your Gmail account ticked in calendar/settings/calendars to display?

Yes to both!
Update: just unchecked the accounts & added back.
Lo&behold it works.
Thanks for chiming in.
Slight different problem I am having...
In settings -> accounts -> google, there is no calendar entry despite the fact that I have installed calendar from the market.
When I go to sync in the calendar app, it shows my google account, but clicking on that shows 'no calendars'. I don't know why it's not working as it syncs just fine to my phone, so I don't think it's a sharing or permission error.
Anyone with a suggestion?
Similar problem
Hey I'm experiencing a similar issue, my google calendar won't sync, tells me to add an account and when I do says it has already been added. If I try to add a new entry the app force closes.
Bough the N7 yesterday, have been using google calendar on my phone just fine. Tried resyncing but no joy. Any solutions out there for this?
Found a solution if anyone comes here with a similar problem, turns out the calendar was not visible, just click on today's window in the app and make sure all the accounts are white rather than tan. Wow, do I feel silly hehe

Hi, I am not a super-user, but also not quite a noob. I've rooted devices and feel I'm relatively competent. I am only mentioning this to simply clarify who's asking, because I am not at all clear on these instructions.
I missed a doctor appointment because my phone (which had all my appointments) did not sync to my N7. Oddly, it did sync some (when, I don't know). I've tried everything I could think of. I've only had the N7 for about 2 weeks, and have found the menu options lacking.
To be clear, my phone has the data. The N7 does not. All boxes have been checked on both Google accts. And, as one does in a situation like this, I unchecked and rechecked them to no avail.
Thanks for the help and everyone's suggestions.

Its a Facebook issue as syncing isn't natively supported in stock android. Unlike HTC Sense and Samsung TouchWiz which support it as its baked into their phones. I use an app called Contact-sync for Facebook, it fixed all my FB syncing problems.
use a app named haxsync

haxsync is worth the price. Gets nice high res contact pictures and adds events and birthdays into your regular calendar app. perfect.
Get haxsync. It not only syncs contacts it syncs Facebook calendars too. Well worth the dollar or two.

It's between Facebook and Google - they had a hissy fit on who 'owns' the contact data on your phone and until they make up it's never gonna be (officially) fixed

Your question was answered by kzoodroid.
Android Jelly Bean does not support contact syncing with facebook.
Device manufacturers like HTC and Samsung added the facebook contact sync into their own devices.. Because they have a contact app (phonebook) that pulls your contacts status updates and such.
Nexus 4 is LG, so no Facebook Contact Sync.
Sidenote: The Contact Sync & Status Updates work for those contacts that have Google+ Profiles though.
Just open the contact, and swipe over, and you'll see their Google+ Info.

What app did you go with? I've never had any problems with Contact Sync for Facebook.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ro.weednet.contactssync&hl=en
Also the new 2.0 update of Facebook supposedly was written with native code for Android but it still doesn't sync all my contacts.
Haxsync is still the best option in my opinion, the added functionality plus jellybean works too. Also I emailed the dev with an issue and received a response to resolve it the next day. Can't beat that!!

It's actually there for a reason. I'm not sure if you heard, but since a few months ago Facebook has been syncing your phone contacts with your facebook contacts. Not to add any info to your phone, but to add phone numbers and other information to your facebook contact book. It's really dodgy, and facebook was called out on it for not clearly informing users when they first started doing it. A lot of people still have no idea that their contact's phone numbers/email addresses/etc. are being used by facebook in that way.

Wait, so Facebook 2.0 syncs status updates and such now, and you're just having a problem with a few of your contacts? or did you mean to say that it still doesn't sync?

Problem with Exchange email in built in app

I have a problem with the built in email app on the Galaxy Note 3 (SM-9005).
I use the built in email app with an Exchange account for work. Since day one it has been working flawlessly.
Yesterday, all of a sudden, new email doesn't show up in the mail app. Email arrives as it should to the account when I check it at the computer. When I try and manually update in the app, the time stamp for "last updated" in the upper right hand corner doesn't change. It does however seem to try and check every once in a while, since the time stamp updates during the course of the day.
I have tried to change the password on the account and the phone, but it doesn't help.
I have also tried removing the account altogether and then adding it again. That doesn't help either. What's even more strange is that the email will sync back to the device when the account is readded, up until yesterday. No email from yesterday or after shows up.
None of my colleagues experience the same problem, but most if them are sporting iPhones.
I can't think of anything in particular that I have installed lately that might bring this problem along.
Does anyone recognise this problem, or even better, know how to fix it?
Thanks!
