[Help!] Bootloop. - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I had some issues with my Defy+...
I tested the latest 4.1.2 nightly and seemed like my backup was corrupted (?!) and I had to flash a 2.3.6 BL-6 .SBF since the backup would make me enter a bootloop.
Well, I tried with different .SBFs and sadly all of them have the same effect: the flashing process moves smooth, except that in the moment when I'm asked to power it up it's entering a bootloop.
Now, my battery STILL has some inside, but trying to charge it won't work(gives me the "?" sign). Don't know what should I do. Should I leave the phone in the bootloop until the battery goes away and then to re-flash a .SBF?...
Or my flashing process wasn't good enough and there's a workaround I don't know?... I don't want to brick my phone forever.

Charge battery with mcgyver metod or with other defy & reflash it with 231 sbf. For more info read: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537

So, there's no other option out there?...

Recharge battery with mcgayver metod and reflash sbf, you'll need start from scratch, because your bootmenu was corrupted and you can't restore nandroid or reinstall zip

Once you have flashed the sbf and back on stock you need to go into the moto recovery and do a restore to default / format system. that should get around the boot loop issue... at least it did for me...

Hi together, well I hope this is the right place.... I'm owner of a motorola Defy MB 525 that ran without any problems on cm9 nightly for last 6 month. Now suddenly it doesn't start any moer andIi can't access recovery setup nor anything else so it's impossible to wipe anything, too. When connected to my notebook only the white LED is shining but nothing happens. The typical "hardware-found-ping" appears and several seconds later the " hardware was removed ping." The right drivers are installed on my notebook, but even RSD Lite doesn't found my Defy so I can't flash enything. Anyone has any Idea what to to?
Thank's in advance for any help!

Do you connect it to RSD in bootloader mode? Volume + when powering on. What is on the screen then?

If you haven't flashed yet try to keep with BL6 sbfs, and not BL7 like 231.
After battery charge try to get to stock recover (volume down when powering on) and wipe data/factory reset before flashing.

[Q] Milestone 2 bricked. Doesn't power up

Hello I have a problem with my milestone 2.
I was using cm7 and today I flashed the official gb sbf via RSD.
Then the phone bootlooped and I tried to enter motorola recovery pressing the "x" and then the @, but when the android exclamation appears and I pressed the @ nothing happened. As I have not gotten into recovery mode I decided to flash froyo sbf.
RSD said "finished" and didn't do anything. I tried to boot up the phone via power button and nothing happens. Tried charging the phone with no results. So now I've got no idea of what to do.
Any ideas?
Sorry for my english
Thank you
Ok now ive managed the way of flashing the phone again. Weird though, With the screen in black. Now it works. For avoiding the bootloop, it is possible to wipe data/dalvik/cache via the pc?
Thanks
Are you sure you have some charge in battery yet? Did you have full battery before flashing SBF? If you are sure, this is not because battery is empty, then try to get into bootloader by holding Power+Volume Down+Camera button and it should be recognised in Windows and then you can try RSD Lite. Or you can try another computer/cable/Linux
EDIT: I don't think so, since you can only use RSDLite (or sbf_flash in Linux/Mac) when in bootloader mode. So best way for you would be flashing SBF again.
yes I had battery and I bought a wall charger just in case. ( I had the battery problem months ago)
I'm having strange issue. The screen is black and RSD recongnises the phone. I can flash sbf but the screen is block during the "creating image file" status. When rsd says "flashing code group etc..." the phone screen lits and shows "SW update in progress" as normal.
But when RSD reaches 100% it says "finished and PASS".
I've done this before and at this part the phone reboots and rsd messoges "the phone is being rebooted"...
Now im trying too flash gingerbread official again...
let's see
Ok now with the official GB sbf the phone reboots lets see if it bootloops.
Asking again!:
Is possible to wipe dalvik/data/cache without entering recovery? via PC?
OK if someone has this problem remember that the @ button doesn't work anymore. Try vol up + vol down instead!!!
My MS2 is too. Don't boot into HS.

have u guyz flashed that 70.13 bootloader before? i did it like 3 months and i think that's the issue.
How is it?
OK people this problem is semi-solved.
If you flashed the official GB you can't downgrade.
If you try it you will get a black screen and the only solution is to re-flash the official GB

This problem can fix.
1. Enter Stock recovery by: Put both POWER + X -> put together Vol + and Vol -.
2. Factory reset ( wipe data) and wipe cache partition
3. Done...
Guys, I am having kind the same problem with my device.
I try factory reset on the recovery mode, but then the phone shuts off before it end and does not comes back out (I have to wait couple minutes to get back).
I was trying to upgrade my phone from 2.2 to 2.3.5...
I try the bootloader and it shows me that the battery is low and nothing happens.
This happens, even when it is pluged to the wall charging.
I see also that, the light next to the mini ubs connector shuts off when the phone turns on.
I do not know what is going on and what else I can do to fix it..
Can you guys help me out?
My M2 doesn't bootup afer try downgrade from GB to Froyo, i try boot up the phone via power button and nothing happens.
I have try to charge the battery for all night, the led will be off, but the phone and battery are very hot; i suppose aren't the battery the problem..

You can't just go back to froyo from gb, at least not directly.
If you were on any 2.3.4 or Retail/TIM Brazil 2.3.6 (not VIVO) , you can try this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497263
Good luck :good:

Maybe try to flash via RSD Lite the same stock firmware you had before CM7 (GB) and do a full wipe, then if the stock firmware is downgradeable (you have to check that it is BL=3 or lower, if it is BL=4 you're stuck in GB) try the method posted by Lean946: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1497263
In the post linked there's a tool to check the BL version
To flash the original stock you must get the sbf file from here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_milestone2/list.php
And the motorola drivers from http://developer.motorola.com/tools/usb_drivers/
And RSD Lite 5.7 from http://www.mediafire.com/?racaejnadym1q2g
And follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032372
Hope it helps

Defy Bricked no bootloader

I tried to flash a custom rom to a defy, but after flashing i got a bootloop.. After that i have tried everything to get a normal working installation but everything failed.
Now i am stuck with a phone that does not want to boot and even cannot get into the bootloader... So i cannot flash using RSD Lite.
Is there another way to unbrick this phone? Or is it end of story?
can you enter on CWM??
Sent from my MB526 using XDA App
1) Remove battery
2) Plug phone to PC
3) launch rsdlite (make sure rsdlite driver's is already working properly)
4) Press power and vol+ , and insert battery.
5) Defy screen might still blank but rsdlite would show status connected.
6) flash back your default sbf
7) boot into stock recovery and do factory reset.
8) reboot.
Note: if your defy is in full flash over gingerbread sbf, you're in trouble. Flash again any gingerbread sbf might help for quick resurrection. If your defy is in froyo, try flashing only froyo, otherwise if you're desperate, gingerbread sbf would help. You're warned for no possibility of downgrade.
Note 2: Battery must at least 80% and above to safely flashing and recovering process.

Your battery is fully loaded?
What happens when you plug in the loader (powercord with adapter in AC plug) when phone is off, is there a battery loading icon appearing?

If there is no white led or anything im afraind you have to send it for repair.
In the Netherlands i have a very good experience with:

Last thing you can try is to turn the phone on with vol down but i think you have allready tried that.

I have the same problem. I come from 2ndinit cm10 and wanted to revert back to cm7.2 but my defy failed to boot. After that I flashed FIXED.French.3.4.2-164.RETAIL.sbf
I hoped that might flash the kernel (home, back buttons were dark due to cm10). I got the red M back and a bootloop.
So I tried some sbf's I had on my hdd. Now the battery is at 3,3v and rsd lite doesn't get the phone. When I apply 5v (like the McGyver hack) the voltage drops to about 4v because the battery is being charged (dangerously I know).
Anyway rsd lite sees my defy again, I am able to flash. But when it should reboot, rsd sais PASS and the screen stays dark.
Connecting usb causes the charging led go on.
How can I bring the device back to life?
Thanks
Dennis
Hi, hold vol down and power, then make a factory reset.

I had this problem, try different sbf's. The first 2-3 that I tried which gave me a blank screen were too old (from 2010) and the last one was from 2011 which was successful. Try with sbf from 2011.
Do you still know what sbf's you have tried and which one did it's job?
Thank's for your answer though!
Edit:
I tried the following one without success
JRDNEM_U3_2.21.0_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA028.0R_USAJORDANRTDACH_P017_A003_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf

i had same case, blank screen.
even no bootloader text.

then connected it to pc and RSD found it,
then flashed with this instruction:
there is some kind special fixed SBF on the link
[GUIDE] All-in-One Defy Beginner's guide
Method 2: (BIG thanks to Jebrew again for this one)
NOTE: You are going to need CM7 for this one. CM7 Stable version recommended.
Download this SBF and Flash it.
Root your phone.
Download 2nd Init 1.4.2 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Reboot to CMW recovery, and wipe Data/Cache.
Install CM7 then install Google Apps.
Reboot an go into Stock Recovery (using the vol- button, not from Bootmenu).
Do a Data/Cache Wipe or you won't have any space when you're done.
Flash this Fixed SBF
Reboot into your nice new rom.
Do not Wipe Data anymore or you will have to start again.
You WONT be able to install full SBFs of any Éclair or Froyo since these Androids have lower CG Versions.

Strange Bricked Defy ?

Hi all,
I have a friend's Defy from a French carrier and my friend is with another carrier so I decide to SIM unlock it by installing CM7 and other files.
So I have root it and install the recovery.
In recovery, I have flash CM7 and Gapps.
But I get a boot loop...
So I decided to flash JORDN_U3_97.21.51 SBF and restart from scratch.
But now, the phone wont boot at all.
Nothing on the screen but it's still reconized by RSD (even if nothing is displayed on the screen) I can re-flash SBF files and RSD say "PASS" but doesn't reboot the phone.
So now I have a brick and can't boot vol up + power doesn't display anything.
Dose anyone have an idea for me ?
Thank you.
1st don't loose your battery - when no working system on the device then it is not being charged
You wrote nothing about wipes - have u performed them? If not try to get into any recovery and wipe user data / factory reset, try vol- w/power or vol + & - together, take a battery for some time before doing it etc.
What ROM u had before flashing CM7?
Is it defy or defy+?
And you flashed CG5 sbf
When you give more details maybe I can propose proper solution.

If I understood right, OP's DEFY is completely bricked and he cannot even access recovery.
Anyway, I unfortunately no solution to propose as I have a DEFY in the same situtation and I'm currently unable to revive it. We aren't the only who had DEFY bricked like this and some managed to have it wake up by flashing certain sbf.
You can try searching "bricked defy" on XDA and see what sbf the topic creator used to save his DEFY, if he succeeded to.
dont flash sbf just after the bootloop..!

frend i wanna tell u onething.the very first time i did the flashing of cm7.1stable on froyo 2.2.2defy i got a bootloop..since i was in hostel i cudnt afford internet..so i was soo scared and even waited for 15 min..but the cm7 logo with an arrow swirling around didnt stop..i puld the batery out and again inserted and did something stupid like clearing data and got the condition worse
then i flashed sbf using rsd lite ..again rooted and flashed cm7.1 stable and got bootloop..this time i surfed net and found what shud hav been done ..
1)pull out the battery after the boootloop.
2)clear cache
3)reboot
tats it..the welcome window comes in no time..
so coming to the present issue, after flashing the smf did u get bootanimation with light passing over "android" againg and again ??
Check that u r using the latest RSD.
I have a Defy plus but the same thing happened to me before (black screen even no boot with vol up) so I connected my phone to the computer (I can't really remember if I powered with a vol up or not) but I got it recognized by the RSD. try connecting and powering on the the vol up if nothing just connect and see what will happen.
The most important thing is to use the latest version of RSD.
and please tell me if it worked.
I'm not responsible for anything.

Defy not booting after froyo sbf flash, not going into stock recovery or bootloader

My Defy had CM7.1, running well. I tried to upgrade to CM9 after making a nandroid backup. During first boot, i was stuck at 'wizard has stopped' when i touched the android icon.
I tried to restore my nandroid backup, but phone booted into recovery.

through RSD lite 4.9 but probably battery was drained, as i could not get the phone to boot after pass message, just a white LED and phone not detecting on RSD lite and not going into boot loader.
With macgyver hack, my pc could recognize the phone and i have flashed a number of ROMs but phone never boots.
While rest all sbfs were froyo, i also flashed
3.4.2-179-002-tmobile-froyo-fixed.sbf
T-mobile froyo bootonly.sbf
and
Tmo_2.2.1-3.4.2-107-boot-devtree-ONLY.sbf

I have the same problem.
But RSD Lite saw my defy, but when RSD Lite send phone to reboot after flash - nothing happening.
I've tried a lot of SBFs from h*t*t*p://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_jordan/list.php but nothing helping.
My defy show only two screens: 'SW Update In Progress...' and 'SW Update Complete' and nothing new on display.
Maybe my battery discharged and McGyver hack doesn't help....
Defy: Can flash only one sbf

Try to flash the file mentioned here. This did the job for me.

[Q] Help, I think I have REALLY bricked my defy!

About a month ago I installed a clockwork based recovery app from the market. I tried restoring and this failed leaving the phone unbootable.
Since then I have tried flashing MANY other sbf`s using rsd lite but this has made the situation worse. I think that I even flashed one for the defy+
Now all I get is either a blank screen or a M logo when I switch on.
Pressing power & volume down doesn`t work so I can`t access the stock recovery menu
I can access the bootloader using power & volume up so i can flash more sbf`s but I`ve tried most of them but none will boot.
BTW the phone was running cm7.1 before I had all this trouble and the battery has been fully charged (in another defy)
Is there any way I can clear off all the stuff I`ve been installing and start from fresh? or can anyone tell me how to get the phone to boot?
I have searched for a solution in the forums but most of the replies involve clearing the cache which I cant do as I cant get to the recovery menu.
Any helpful comments will be gratefully received
many thanks
Jeff H
Your flashs complete with Finish/Pass, or just "please manually power up this phone"?
If it's the later, read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38187413&postcount=2
Just stick to the most highest Defy+ sbf build, or just use DFP-231 build to be sure.

Thanks for the reply
I flashed the DFP-231 sbf file as you suggested but it wouldn`t boot any further than the M logo.
I did get the "please manually power up this phone" message and followed the procedure from the link you gave
I can`t wipe the as I cannot get to the recovery menu.
Is there any other way to wipe the cache?
JeffH
Nah, no other way than stock recovery for stock rom.
Just make sure your flash finished with Finish/pass, that'll make your stock recovery working again.
Wish you a best luck.
i flashed with this:
DEFYPLUS_U3_4.5.1-134_DFP-231_GR_SIGN_UCADEFYEMARAB1B80AA004.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNGIBRRTCEE_P022_A022_Service1FF.sbf
but still no boot
Is this the correct rom?
cheers
JeffH
I wonder if the following might give someone a clue about whats wrong with my defy
If I flash gingerbread rom either defy or defy+ then rsd completes with PASS, and phone will boot as far as the M logo and I can access the menu with power+volume UP
If I flash below gingerbread then rsd doesnt complete but gives `manually reboot` message. If I then power off and plug in again then rsd completes with PASS but when I reboot there is NO M logo and no menu on power and volume up.
I`m keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to revive my phone.
JeffH
With DFP-231 rom, how about power+volume down to boot into stock recovery? I think you're just one step away from reviving defy.

No, Power + volume down doesn`t work, (ie nothing happens). Only power + volume up works.

Thanks, but it didn`t work. Still stuck at M logo. Obviously I couldn`t clear the cache before and between flashing

Thank you all for your helpful advice.
I have now sent the phone away for repair.
I spoke to the technician on the phone and she reckons it needs dismantling and a jtag repair (whatever that is).
But beware an app on the market, I think it is called orange backup, as it was after installing this and trying to restore the backup that I screwed up my phone!
