More WiFi woes - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So last night the wife and I were at a fancy hotel for my work's Christmas party. The hotel had an unprotected WiFi network that would force you to a web page when you connected so you could sign in. Standard stuff.
My wife connected to the WLAN with her Kindle and it prompted her a login was required, launched the crappy Kindle browser she tapped a button she was in. She then connected using her Xperia S (running Android 4.0.4) and got a status notification telling her a login was required and selecting this opened her browser to the login page. But although my N4 would connect to the network it refused to display any login notification. I tried various combinations of WiFi settings, including turning off the "Avoid poor connections" and "Network notification" settings. I tried rebooting but nothing could make my N4 to login to the network. So I fired up my Nexus 7, also running Android 4.2.1, connected to the network and instantly got a "Login required" notification which took me to the login page and I was up and running with no problems.
Seriously, WTF is up with WiFi on this device? I have another issue at home which causes my WiFi speed to plummet if I use the GPS (I kid you not, I can reproduce this every time). Either the WiFi drivers on this device are crap or there is something wrong with my N4.
I feel like a beta tester.

Something is wrong with your device. I have excellent wifi reception and tired to reproduce your GPS bug but failed.
I suggest giving Google a call

HD2 suddenly stopped connecting to wi-fi.

I have no idea what caused it, but just tonight my phone stopped being able to connect to my home wifi. The wifi symbol in the status bar shows that it is connected, and the phone sees my router but when i try to activate skype it asks me if i would like to use a cellular connection as apparently my wifi does not exist.
Any ideas ?
reboot your modem and router, turn off wifi on the phone until it is back up, then reenable the phones wifi, see if that helps.
No dice. I reset both, the symbol shows me as being connected on the phone but when i load up Opera and try to go to a web page it says 'Connection closed' and Skype also isn't working.
Okay so that's strange. For some reason my HD2 set itself to a Static IP. I went into the Broadcom settings and changed to server assigned IP and it's working again.
Technology is a pain sometimes !

For some weird reason my does a similar thing about every 3-4 days. Nothing changes, it just decides to not connect however resetting the Netgear does the trick (not ideal but does the job).
Other dissapointing thing is often it cant pick up or has poor signal around the house in certain rooms but my wifes bloody Iphone picks up signal everywhere lol (i still convince her, the iphone is inferior)

Wifi Guest Connection Problem

I've searched several forums for this problem with no luck. It seems this is not specific to the Droid X but many Android devices with some posts 2 years old. I figured this was a good place to start. Surely it's been solved by now.
I've been trying to connect to our guest wifi network at the hospital where I work. The X says connected and gives me a good signal. When I try to open the browser it doesn't give me the screen where I agree to the terms to get access. It attempts to send me to http s: //1.1.1.1... but the page never loads and instead gives an error about the lack of connection.
The network is open but the SSID is hidden. I have setup a new wifi connection with 'guest' and it sees the network. I can briefly see Citrix popup on the browser address bar before it sends me to the failure screen. I have turned off the popup blocker and tried the default browser, Dolphin, Skyfire, and XScope. I've also tried Open Wifi Login but since all I need to do is click this crazy button it doesn't work. The security certificate box is unchecked in settings and I've tried changing the browsers to desktop and even iphone. I do not have access to the router itself. I can connect to my secure wifi at home with no problem.
Sorry for dragging this out but I wanted to give as much info as possible. I've seen posts various places about this but never a solution. The worst part is a friend of mine has a new iphone and it brings the confirmation screen up and he's in immediately. Of course I've harassed the crap out of him about my huge screen, etc so he's really loving this. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Not sure, but the first weekend after the phone came out I was at a hotel in AL for a wedding and was able to connect to a guest access. The droid told me it found a wireless network, I connected and opened the browser and it took me to a page where I had to click 1 day access. All I can say is try getting a laptop or another phone and see if you see the address it goes to and email the link to yourself and try to connect that way.

[Q] Nook Color - Wi-Fi connected but can't add google account or browse web.

I just loaded phiremod 6.3 onto my Nook Color. When I attempt to add my google acount, I get "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server." When I click on the market app, I get "Could not launch the requested activity." When I open the internet browser, I get "Web page not available."
I have a strong wi-fi signal that my computer, cell phone, and another Nook Color are able to use without problems. The tablet says that I am connected, the signal is strong, and I'm not in airplane mode. I can't seem to find any posts that address the problem of not being able to add a google account AND not being able to browse the web with a solid wi-fi connection.
This is my first post so let me know if I put this in the right category and if I need to add any additional information.
Thanks in advance.
I thought this might be a problem with the newly released phiremod 6.3 because my device was working just fine on 6.2. However, I just flashed back to 6.2 and experienced the same problems. I can't make sense of this especially since the device is successfully connecting to the wi-fi.
Have you verified that if you reboot a PC on the same wireless network it works properly? Could your router have run out of available IP addresses? Possibly not handing out DHCP properly? Maybe your DNS servers you have listed in the Router were down temporarily and your computer was using cached information previously. Several scenarios that could be valid here. I'd like to find out first if a PC on the same wireless, connected wirelessly, is working.
Also do you have MAC address filtering on the network? So you're connecting w/ no issues but not able to surf because it's blocked.
If you go to the admin GUI of the router do you see the NC in the DHCP client table after you are successfully connected to the WiFi network?
Good Luck, I'll try to think of any other things.

Thanks for your reply Deltabear.
I share a wireless connection with my apartment landlord so I don't have access to the actual router. However, I can tell you that his computer is the only other one that uses it, and only for a few hours during the day. I rebooted my pc, and it's having no problems with the wireless connection. I rebooted my other Nook Color, and it too has no problem with the wireless connection.
I just remembered that when I loaded phiremod 6.2 it connected to the wi-fi. Then I experienced a boot loop when I tried to flash 6.3. I still have no idea what went wrong when I flashed 6.3, but everything went downhill from there. I ended up trying to revert back to stock, but instead of a bootloop at "Touch the future of reading" I got stuck in a bootloop at the N. I performed the 8x method and received an OTA update, but remained in the bootloop. At this point I decided to just go back to trying to flash phiremod 6.3, and this time it worked...except for the wacky wi-fi problem.
When you go into settings>Wi-Fi settings Is the router listed with connected underneath it? Or does it keep saying 'connecting'?
If it says connected press the router name and it should bring up a box in the middle of the screen with
Status
Security
Signal Strength
Link speed
IP address
What does it say under each?
Well the problem seems to be resolved but I don't know how or why. I turned the Nook's wi-fi off, and when I turned it back on I was able to add my google account, browse the web, and open the market. I know turned the wi-fi off and on several times yesterday so I am still perplexed as to why it seems to be working now.
To answer your question DreamingWolf, the router always said it was connected. I don't remember what the info was for it when I was having the problem, but I know I looked at it a few times and nothing seemed unusual there...I am however a noob.

Wireless network that requires portal login?

Hi all - first off apologies if this was asked/answered, I tried searching several different ways and kept getting search errors for some reason.
I am running Android N on my Nexus 6p, and have been for some time. I love it so far, and have had no issues minus one- whenever I try to connect to a wireless network (at my place of employment for example) that requires you to log in via a web portal (to agree to their terms etc) I cannot seem to get it to do so. It fluctuates between "obtaining IP address" and "connected no internet" and if and when it stays connected long enough to pull up the browser, whatever address I type in, it pulls up, but only because it falls back to LTE.
I've browsed the wireless settings themselves and cant seem to get around this. Any suggestions?
the same here i don;t know what causes that problem. the problem started after update patch october 2016
I haven't encountered that issue yet, am on the October update, and have used this feature a few times.

Captive Portal Notifications

On my previous device (a Nexus 5X) when my phone connected to a WiFi network with a captive portal login I would get a notification to sign in and clicking this popped up the sign in page.
On my LG G6 870DS I get nothing, it just sits there connected to the network with no internet connection and no notification. To connect I have to manually forget the network and manually reconnect to it to force the login pop up.
Is the way that other users phones are working? Have I missed an obvious setting to change?
I have tried clearing the data from the captive portal login application and toggling the notify open networks option off and on.
Every time I go into a coffee shop or even worse every morning going into work having to go through this routine is a bit painful when it should just notify me there is a network available and let me click to connect.
