[Q] A Gamepad-related question. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, here's the situation:
I have 3 gamepads, one is a fake dualshock, which isn't compatible with my nexus 7 at all, not to my surprise, and 2 other normal pc usb gamepads.
One is a fairly cheap Logic3 gamepad and the other a Logitech Rumblepad 2. The Logic3 one actually belongs to my little brother, so I can't really use it all the time.
Now, I was trying to hook up my Logitech gamepad to my nexus 7 with an OTG cable, might I interject I'm running PA 2.99 beta 2 with the stock kernel it comes with (if this is important for some reason), to use it as a gamepad for emulation. I'm playing a game on Gameboid, the GBA emualtion software. Now, it recognises both the gamepads. The problem is, my own gamepad doesn't function well in that, when assigning "hardware buttons" in Gameboid itsself, all buttons except the D-pad show up as '<unknown>', and don't do anything. The logic3 one I borrowed from my brother to test gives the same message '<unknown>' for every button, but it DOES work. Every button is recognised, and functions seperately when playing the game, so I can actually play with the Logic3, but not with my own gamepad.
Does anyone know what might be the cause, does this mean my gamepad won't really be compatible, or is this kernel-base/ROM-base? Are there drivers/kernel modules I should look for?
Any help would be appreciated!
Sincerely
MajorMonodon

Does this happen only on Gameboid or on other android emulators as well? It could be the gamepad is just not compatible with it since your using an OTG cable. I would double check the rom's thread and see if anyone else is having issues with using wired controllers just to be sure. I can't even play Gameboid for too long without it crashing my Nexus 7 and making it restart on its own. I'm still trying to figure out why this happens.

Gamepad to work on the A500? (Richardtrips and Thors Kernel works!)

I'm running stock 4.010.38 right now and I've tried XBOX 360 remotes and a Generic USB Gamepad but I can't get it to work.
ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to use it for Snes and N64oid emulator.
Cheers!
Edit: Please for those who are successful and unsuccessful with this, post your builds and your settings and gamepads! This way we can see whats what.
Edit: Progress (DEV)Richardtrips kernel 2.3 and Thors kernel they have generic USB gamepad support enabled! Awesome!
I'm running rooted stock and was able to get something from a final fantasy 14 gamepad. Gameboid couldn't detect some of the buttons, so it may be a limitation of the driver.

using a Saitek generic pad
Have a old USB saitek 6 button - plugged it in, works fine. Only can use 4/6 buttons but it seems to work fine, tested with a snes emulator, using 4.010.04 stock.
My wired 360 controller worked on 3.0. I haven't tried since updating to 3.1 since no games use it.

Guys dont forget to post your build number
I'm useing the new Virtuous XooM v1.1.2 HC 3.2 rom and my a500 works just fine with my ps3 controller hooked up through usb
Pretty sure all 3.1 firmwares sould work with xbox , some USB and ps3 controllers the main issue is that you can only use them in some apps like the emulators.
you can not controll eg the browsers with them. and dont think games like NFS work ether.
4.010.40, N64Droid, ps3 = yes, usb = yes
works great
...running 3.1 stock rooted, use the honeyvillian rom too. Logitech wired gamepad works great on nesoid emulator
4.010.11 com Gen 2. Wired 360 controller is working with cordy, snes9x, and n64oid. For cordy, no setup required. For the emulators, go to the button setup, select a button, then push a button on the controller
3.1 with the Picasso mod.
WiiMote works great, even the motion works.
Had to download an app from the market, WiiMote Something.
Not sure if the ubs remotes are the same, but I have to change my keyboard input, from stock to Game Pad, then map them in the games.
Unable to get the Xbox controller on mine to work.
It isn't an official MS one, its called "After Glow" which connects via a USB cord. When I plug it in the light flashes on the Xbox symbol but have not been able to remap it in Snes9x or any other emulator i have tried.
Build: Acer_A500_4.010.40_COM_GEN1
Tempted to pick up a Logitech Dual Action Game pad as I can get one cheap and heard that it does work, anyone else have experience with this model?
*edit* Borrowed my mates official Microsoft Xbox USB controller and it worked fine so looks like I was just having an issue with the generic brand, shouldn't be surprised really.

Just for info both Thors kernel and Richardtrips have USB Gamepad support.
It didnt work before but it works now, but still not with my xbox 360 controller.
Cheers!
Wiimote Controller app.
Works great.
EDIT
I couldn't get a Logitech Precision USB controller to work, unfortunately.
Using Taboonay wit thor kernel, mine did not work (ps3) connected with USB.
Did some googleing. found out i need a OTG cable.
Too bad wireless and normal USB are not working. (or maybe im doing something wrong)

Its working perfect for me im using a generic ps3 look-alike.
I think that generics should all work because it basically acts as an outside navigation tool like a mouse and you can move around the Honeycomb UI as soon as you plug it in the/USB port.
Will upload a picture of my remote later.
Is anyone else having issues with the Start buttons on controllers taking you to the home screen?
I ended up having to map start and select to L3 and R3.

Theoretically you should be able to navigate the entire UI using the gamepad so I dont think that is strange behaviour.
Nothing to worry about.

It is when it prevents me from being able to map buttons correctly.

go buy any knockoff wireless PS3 controller with the usb receiver n youve got yourself some good ol fashion plug n play fun!
EDIT:
i dropped $30 on the controller btw

[Q] Using two usb gamepads at the same time

is this possible? I've had two of them hooked up in an attempt to play a two player game through emulation. Both controllers worked, but they act as one controller. For example, any action on either controller moved both characters and any button press did the same on both characters. I had both pads enabled in the options. Is this a limitation with the tablet only being able to assign one set of buttons for one gamepad at a time? If so,is there a way to work around it? Thanks in advance. P.S. I'm using the emulator "snesoid".
Edit- I think this is in the wrong section.
I'm not sure about devices though USB, but I'm pretty sure if you had Wii controllers you can hook up 2 of those to the tablet at a time. You would need a special app for that though. With the app you can map all the keys for different functions.

Oh really? Could you tell me the name of the app? I might try going this route then.
It's called Wiimote controller. Its free in the market. I have never physically tried 2 controllers but I'm pretty sure it works because of all the mappings you can do. It takes a bit of leg work to get it up and running, but you can also connect the nunchuks and the classic controllers to it.
I'll look into that. I hope it works. Me and my buddy are trying to play through some games at work during our breaks. This will definitely help pass the time if it works.

[Request] Gamepad kernel module

Hey
I've been looking for a way to enable gamepad via OTG on Galaxy Note, and from what I understand there needs to be a kernel module present for this to work - joydev.ko. I've been searching for it and found some of them but for different devices, and wasn't surprised that none of them worked.
Could some developer spend a few minutes and try compiling joydev for our device? I have been trying to do this myself the whole day but seems I don't have enough knowledge in this field.

I've been trying as well. Couldn't do it either.
Winded up buying a DualShock3 and connecting it using SixAxis. Works perfectly
When i had an asus transformer prime i was able to connect my xbox 360 gamepad to the usb port. it was a great experience.
this is something i really miss on the galaxy note.
Hi just coupe of days back i was also trying to figure out how to enable game pad.
What i did was,
1. Bought a six axis USB controller connected it via OTG.
2.got a all called usb/bt joycenter.
3. The app detected the connected controller, i mapped the keys for GTA3.
4. Done
Worked like a charm.
Hope this information is helpful

Thanks for the hint.
It would be even better to have some kind of native support like i had experienced on the asus transformer prime with the wireless 360 controller connected via the "dongle thing". also gta 3 is one of the games that support controller out of the box. so it should not be nessesary to buy apps...
just a kernel thing?
The app you linked to kind of works, but only on stock-based roms (I think, didnt work for me on paranoid).
It does discover the x360 wireless adapter and even properly pairs the controller with the adapter. I can see it receiving button presses and i can map them and what not. The problem is it doesn't forward the presses properly. I tried mapping it to different keys to no success (and I have the IME switched on and set as default). The controller works within the app but nowhere else.
I have yet to try to play around with the touch emulation thing
Have you set the default input method as IME ?
If then also its not working you can try this app (free but limited)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.gameboard
or this one which is paid but is fully customizable

Yes, I have.
These apps are basicaly on-screen gamepads, I'm looking for a way to make a real controller work.

You are correct these are mainly meant for onscreen keyboard but GameKeyboard is much more than that.
Sometimes the keys of controllers are not recognized by the games, in my case NESOID emulator was not able to recognize the controller keys other than the D-Pad.
In the GameKeyboard app, you can map the physical keys to virtual keyboard keys such as A,B, C ,D......Z or 1234... anything. Then you can assign these keys in the input mappings of the game(Not talking about the touch pad of game). You can also create profiles for multiple games.

Nexus 7 and multiple independent gamepads?

Hi people, so I was pumped for a multiplayer game of super smash bros with some friends on a n64 emulator, but ran into a brick wall. So I'm able to get all three Logitech controllers (pretty much ps3 controllers) connected (via otg and usb hub) and able to control the nexus 7, but they all seem to control "player 1", tried messing around with all the in app settings, but no use. So my question is, is it possible for this to work? as it seems the button output isn't recognised as coming from a particular gamepad, just that the particular button was pressed.
Hope I'm making sense....would appreciate suggestions or if any has this working! Multiplayer would be so awesome on this device
Guess its impossible lol....

[Q] Does the Nexus Player's Controller work on OUYA?

I was about to the buy the Nexus Player, along with the controller, and I was wondering if someone could test the controller on the OUYA. I really like the Nexus Player's controller, so I was wondering if it can be used to replace to the OUYA controller?
Idk, But if/when they release kernel source you could probably port the controller to ouyas kernel if you had to
Will the ouya or ps4 controllers work on Nexus player. God I hope so. I have 4 ouya and 4 ps4 controllers. I can't afford to buy any more controllers.
Does anyone have an answer for this?

By default, the Ouya controller does not work very well, the button mapping is all messed up. Once we get root, I can add the proper keyboard layout files from the Ouya and let you know if that works. At least it pairs just fine.
Ps4 controller does not work
I've tried a bunch of times to get the PS4 controller to work, but I cannot get it to pair over bluetooth and I don't have a usb otg cable to see if it works over usb. :/
Do you have the nexus player gamepad? Can it pair with OUYA and play games?

I do not have a Nexus Player gamepad. I already have 4 Ouya gamepads, so I thought getting another one was just too much.
I've got the nexus gamepad delivered to me yesterday and although I haven't tested pairing it with the ouya yet, I'm pretty sure that the button mapping will be messed up. I have paired it with my note 10.1 2014 and it works great! Especially with Limelight (whatever the newest root ver is)
Yup, as said above, it DOES pair, but the mapping is all messed up. One of the keypad buttons maps to 'back', not had the triggers working in anything. But some games have still been playable.
Hope someone gets this working as it's also quite good to have the touchpad area to move around too.
Oh, the other thing is both the standard gamepad and the ouya gamepad when paired show as the same controller (ie, player1). Not sure where the other ouya pad I've got is to see if that turns up as player2.
