n64 app: mupen64plus AE - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

anyone tried running nintendo64 rom emulator? i tried that n64 app: mupen64plus AE
with killerinstinct2GOLD game zip rom and it still lags! i guess 2gb ram doesn't cut it
or it might be just the app that makes it laggy(music choppy, screen flickers)

No, it's probably not a phone problem, but the app just sucks.
I recommend N64oid (google it) and sideload the app. It worked flawlessly on my old Flipside, which is a single core 720MHz and 512mb RAM.

Mupen64Plus, AE clearly states it's unstable and in beta. The dev has lots of other things going on in his life, so development has been very slow recently. Over time, it should eventually surpass N64oid (seeing as N64oid's likely been abandoned), though N64oid is currently much faster and more stable (as it was developed for much longer).

N64oid is pretty decent. I ran mario cart 64 with no lag on my captivate. As far as Mupen64plus goes, as previously stated, its still under development. A sloow, loongg and haard development.

Sry. I dont have the cappy anymore, gave it to my brother. But I did run few games on it, when I had it, like mario cart 64, star fox 64, golden eye 007 and donkey kong 64, all of them ran with little or no lag on the cappy. I would assume the N4, with its S4 Pro and the 320 gpu would be able to handle that with no problem. As far as having issues with certain roms, it could just be the rom itself. Also on the cappy, I played pokemon fire red, using gameboid, and I had 2 different roms for the same game and one of them did run better then the other. ....killerinstinct....nostalgia. good times. :highfive:

I tried playing Smash Bros on it and some characters were missing eyes, such as Mario and Yoshi..
Also the screen flickers quite a bit, messed with some of the settings a bit but it wouldn't solve it. :/

Batman runs terrible on my nexus

Just purchased the game and for my surprise it is running really bad here. Low fps and laggy as hell.
I have been researching and it seems that tegra 3 has some issues with games from gameloft.
Anyone else tried and had problems like this ? I am trying to find a solution for this but so far no luck.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Yeah same. Used different kernels too. It's pretty much unplayable.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Forgot to say that I am using motley kernel. If the problem is with tegra maybe it possible to emulate some other api....
Well...back on looking for a solution....

The PowerVR / Adreno 2xx / Mali chips do really well with Gameloft games. I guess nVidia needs to increase their market share before Gameloft shows them any love. My phone is using the Adreno 205 chip, and plays some games better than my Tegra device(which sucks).
If i am not mistaken Chainfire had an app to emulate tegra drives on mali so we could run games like shadowgun.
Maybe the opposite could be done either ?

Let me try that ChainFire3D, and report back, because I'd like to think this was 25 cents wasted hahaha
*edit* DO NOT flash ChainFire3D. It sent my tablet into bootloops and had to restore a nandroid. Little bug with this phone won't let you go into recovery from bootloader without it being plugged in.
id say its your setup, its running very smooth here, and lag free. do you have force gpu rendering enabled in the main device settings, developer options? rasbean jelly rom with the latest trinity kernel.
Same here runs great, using paranoid android 2.17 and montley kernel 1.1.1 gpu 484.
Runs horribly for me too. Stock kernel and XenonHD,no over clock. Laggy as hell.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Runs laggy here too on rasbeanjelly stock kernal, Franco kernal seemed to have slightly better performance buts dissapointing that gameloft is having us resort to using custom roms/kernals just to get almost decent performance in there games, back on tegra 2 gameloft games were extremely smoove what happened here?

It seems to be a miss and hit scenario, some report it playable and some report unplayable. Suppose everyone has a different outlook on playable, anyway, Gameloft games aren't optimised for Tegra 3. As leelaa pointed out they only use 1 core, which is pretty annoying. Also this should be in Themes & Apps section?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus, if I helped hit thanks.
batman runs fine here..non-rooted..very mild lag sumtimes..but playable..i have complain bout asphalt 7...low gfx..terrible frame rate...

You are correct they aren't optimized yet, if they were you would see all the HD titles on the wapstore, and there's actually none on there other than the simple free games that they have, but hopefully that changes soon

Ran fine on rooted stock when I bought it a while back. Pretty graphics but it's more like watching a movie with predictive actions. After a few tries got bored and uninstalled it.
I'm on stock unrooted and it works perfectly. Very smooth.

mine lags... almost unplayable.
Could it be possible that some 'variants' of Nexus 7 runs fine?
Let s try to discover what are the settings of those who runs it smooth and copy it.
I will begin to test it here.

I disabled the force gpu under developer and it got way way better. Now it is playable. My nexus frooze while playing. I will increase the voltage and how it works.
Nice...i will keep testing

[Q] What is the best way to play N64 games?

I've installed N64oid on my Nexus 4 and tried to run Ocarina of Time. Though it is decent, there is still a lot of frame drop. My assumption is that the phone shouldn't have any problem given the specs it has and that there is something that I can do to make this run a lot smoother.
Try this emulator.

It doesn't matter how powerful the phone is if the emulator isn't 100% flawless.

The really best way to play n64 games is to buy a n64 i suggest.

Getting Emulators (N64) To run Flawless

Hey I'm just trying to run Emulators like N64 flawlessly, I think changing from Stock to Jellybean helped quite a bit (I notice Kirby Crystal Shards has no slowdown now) Zelda Ocarina of Time is quite smooth, I don't have Overclocking features to get it to its optimal yet so I was wondering how else I can do it, by trying out other Roms powered specifically to run games smoothly?
I use n64oid 2.7. Playing super mario 64 perfect, super smash bros (some slight slowdowns when a lot of enemies on screen), and harvest moon 64 fine.

Use a GB rom they are much better fir gaming & Peeformance!
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
n64oid has great performance, but no touchpads on GB. I actually am thinking of flashing an ICS rom just for touhcpads on n64oid.
On the other hand, mupen64plus-ae works great (not as good with heavy games, but stuff like mario64 runs perfectly at all times), and has touchpads.

Yep ICS is touchpad compatible, I haven't tried it yet but I read the sensitivity has room to be increased as in you might find yourself pushing to the outer rims of the touchpad but I don't know. Mupen64plus is great, and I tried with Majora's Mask and it was fun, one I got to a town it got quite laggy then I tried to N64oid and it was less laggy.
n64oid is the best emu.
Then overclocking is a must for n64 emulation.
It's actually the first thing I do to test my overclocking cause it's with the n64 games I feel the most change in performance with overclocking.

Nice. Now I need to try to get this overclocking thing working
Most games run perfectly with n64oid. But unfortunately, I dont found yet an emulator that run Cruis'n USA without lag. Killer Instinct runs fine, but the controllers dont work properly. I tryed many different configs, but no success. Basically, only this two games that have issues for me. I have tested almost all emulators, and the more stable so far was the N64oid.

To overclock, you need a custom kernel. Look in the development section for it, and make sure it's compatible with your rom. Once you've flashed the kernel, you can find a CPU tuner app (this one works fine). Sometimes, there's a CPU tweak utility included in the rom.

Doomkernel or lupus v10
n64oid
Overclocked 1.4 with no frills cpu
Almost no lag at all on SMB
Hope it helps!

Am I the only one who thinks mupen64 needs a lot of work

It leaves the faces off the super smash bro stars like link. Its slow on Mario 64 and laggy.

You should probably email the developer and ask for a refund. How much did you pay for it again?
Try using 720p instead of 1080p.
I wasn't mad at them I know its free I just hear people say how great it is I just thought I was doing something wrong.

Some games are just fine ,others are unplayable, I'm happy with it though. Free is free.

The faces being blank in smash brothers is specific to one of the video plugins, try another one, that fixed it for me.
And for laggyness, try reducing the render resolution, this makes a big difference, the N64 isn't going to benefit from 1080p anyways

Seems responsive enough, even on Goldeneye. But I'm displaying at 720p on my old 37" Vizio. My non-techy girlfriend is having a ball playing ZeldaoT.

Fpse open gl fix

If you are using the emulator fpse you have probably noticed the open gl performance is bad on this tablet (if similiar to the 10.1) To fix this download the open gl plugin through epsxe and transfer that one to fpse. I dont know why but it has MUCH better performance. Also how are emulators in general running for you guys

Haven't installed any yet, but I plan to do so this evening. I'll report back later. I own all the .emu emulators and SuperGNES...Oh, and PPSSPP...And FPSE...And NostalgiaNES.|

No problem. I was running fpse and epsxe and just kept noticing that open gl was much smoother and more stable on epsxe. So I figured what the heck maybe its the plugin and voila!! Fpse has better options and playability and with the epsxe plugin it runs incredibly well at high graphics. Ff7 looks awesome with very occasional lag (like when starting a battle)
