T-Mobile monthly 4g vs contract - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I usually buy my phones full retail anyway and I use a lot of data. We all know how T-Mobile $70 plan has unlimited everything other than data, 5gb. I dropped by T-Mobile store and their new plan, has unlimited data! Same price, before 15% discount! Problem? Contract... I have 14 days to cancel and just go month to month, but lose unlimited data... What do you guys think?
I've had monthly 4g before and loved speeds, the fact that it wasn't unlimited though...

Yeah, the Value Plan? I was considering that too, maybe the 500 minute plan with unlimited data for $60 too depending on how much you talk on your phone.
So far I ordered the prepaid sim and going to activate the $30 plan, if I don't like it I can just go to the Value Plan.

One very bad thing about T-Mobile is that any changes you make to your plan, it renews/resets the contract to the current date.
Be very careful with T-Mobile contracts.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app

Yes I don't like the idea of a contract, specially since I didn't even get a phone through them...
I was considering $30 a month plan, problem is... I also free lance, at times I use a phone a lot while on the go and VoIP is too unreliable for that in this area. There are spots with very poor T-Mobile data coverage here. So I'm stuck with either unlimited +5gb, or unlimited + contract.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

Its all up to ur usage....
Do u really need unlimited??? On average I use about 1 GB. And a while back when I tried to use as much data as a I can...I only maxed at out about 3 GB. (Bascially Pandora every time I listen to music...which is about 2-3 hours a day total???)
If you tether a lot then its very worth it.

Do you really use more than 5gb? I think that would REALLY be a challenge for anyone. Keep in mind that unlimited account are generally always monitored for tethering (especially if Tmobile does have a tethering add-on)
I consider myself a very heavy user as I charge my GSM GN 3-4 times a day, cause I always have something running on it (streaming) . The only exception to bring up, is that I use WIFI when I'm home. I've never passed the 3gb mark

I've had my Nexus 4 for about a day and I've already racked up about 1GB pretty easily. I'd recommend one of their value plans. For 69.99 you get truly unlimited, no 5GB throttle point. They require a 2 year contract but if you're sticking with T-Mobile for a while that doesn't really matter. Canceling the contract early is $200 ETF. Without it you'd spend $89.99 for the same plan, so it seems pretty worth it to me. Attached a screenshot of my 1 day usage...

Be a small business owner like me and pay $55 a month for 1000 minutes, unlimited text/4G with no throttling

You're probably in the minority here. I'm pretty sure most people aren't spending a majority of their day watching TwitchTV on 4G and tethering....and WiFi is not that hard to come by these days (home/work).

All accounts are monitored for tethering. It isn't hard to use more than 5GB.. Hell ROMs are 200mb each, some of the newer games are up to a GB , plus streaming spotify it's really rather easy for some of us.

You have to remember though... if you are going to download a large file, are you going to use WiFi, which is way faster than HSPA+, or are you actually going to download a 200mb ROM over data?

Was only maybe a bit over an hour of Twitch (720p stream) while in the car and about 30 minutes tethering while I VPN'd into work on the go. OP had already stated he used a lot of data and is likely to hit the 5GB cap. So while you say "most people", the OP is not most people.

T-Mobile 5GB Data Throttle Starts Oct.16 :-(

Oh no! damn. This sucks.
That's fair. No extra charges.
It is unfortunate, but it was inevitable. As long as there are no extra charges, 5 GB of 3G speed seems fair. Blame everyone who abused their connections >:|
This seems fair, at least its not like 2gb and overage like those poor suckers on ATT

5 GB on a mobile device is a lot to use. Are you guys streaming HD movies on your phone or somethin??
I agree seems fair. Att is going down hill fast.
FWIW I had 5 gig tehter plan on blackberry as my main internet connection for two months. I came very close but never hit 5 gigs. This was 8 hours a day at work + pleasure.
Id rather have a choice than be stuck with either.

Oh wow, that would REALLY suck. I definitely go over that easily every month. I have never come close to 5gb though. I'm on AT&T right now with a grandfathered unlimited plan, so I'm ok (for now).
At least the TMO unlimited plan is still unlimited, just at a slower speed once the 5GB is reached. With other carriers charging for overages, I'm not sure how they (the other carriers) can get away with calling it "unlimited".
im guessing this doesnt affect tzones ($5 plan) users... since when i goto my account, even if ive been using over 2gb of data that month, it says ive used zero data... im guessing this is because everything is going through a proxy

wow i never thought of that actually...
can the proxy setting be used for other data plans to bypass this data cap? I normally use 6 to 8gb per month as the tether is my only internet access.
The 5GB limit is fair. At least they don't charge you for overages like ATT. My buddy has a 200MB plan because ATT f-ed him when he tried to grandfather his unlimited data plan from ~3 years ago. Now he makes me turn on my N1's hotspot whenever we hang out.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I read that, and then read people complaining about it
I'm around 1.5-2GB per month right now and don't believe that I'll ever read 5GB unless I start downloading huge files all day! I believe this is the right way to treat customers compared to the "big two's" plan. Also, I'm a loyal T-Mobile customer for 7 years now.
I can live with 5GB limit...but they better never change it again to any lower
Victimized ?
Tomorrow (paintball day heheh) is the throttle day.

T-Mo $10 deal

I called into T-Mobile to ask them about the Data Services being down yesterday, and they offered me an upgrade from my 2GB to 5GB data plan for $10 (standard)and they threw in Mobile Hotspot/Tethering for free. They also gave me something called My Life or something like that T-Mobile does that downloads and stores all your pics/videos, etc... that I'm not going to use, so I stopped the Rep before she could explain it to me. She said this offer was a one time special offer good only for that phone call, I don't believe that, they offered stuff like that the only other two times I've called in before and said a similar thing, but I'm sure you can call in and ask for it if you are interested in upgrading your data anyway. But I thought to pass it on, no need to flame on the fact you can just root and get the free tethering stuff anyway, it's only $10 to upgrade data, the point is that if anyone was thinking about increasing their "unlimited" data limit now that the throttling trick is not working anymore, this hopefully helps you all out. Saves the $15 tethering monthly cost and not needing to mess with fixing or freezing tricks to rip the tethering and maybe you'll like the My Life thing they also throw in? Just FYI for anyone this may help...
$10~ $20 for 2gb...$30 for 5gb.. paying $10 extra is basically the same...
You're probably out of the loop but the upgrade from 2GB to 5GB has always been 10 dollars. $20 for 2GB, $30 for 5GB. 10 dollar difference.
Tethering has been included in the 5GB plan for a few months now and it was a marketing thing for the retention department to offer customers to keep them from jumping ship. If you like the plan, by all means enjoy... it's not a 'super' deal to most people though.
Those extra features get offered almost anytime you call with a data issue, to bad most of it is worthless XD

Retail rep here. The old unlimited plans in your are grandfathered in is usually $20 to $25 for 5GB of 4G. If you are on the newer Classic plans (kinda oxymoron lol), there isn't a normal way of getting a 5GB plan for less than $30 unless you can get the saves department to hook you up with a $10 monthly credit or something. However, I have been able to glitch certain accounts for some of my customers to make it work if you are coming from a grandfathered plan.
Example. Old 3000 Promo for 2 lines with 5GB data was $110 T+Tx, $20 per data.
I had a customer that had 4 lines on this plan all with web. When I changed updated it for Classic to save them money and get them on the unlimited minute plan, it had me change one of the web features but the other ones stayed on there when they are actually supposed to be removed. I checked that same account a few times over a span of a few months and sure enough they stuck so my customer ended up with 3 5GB $20 webs and 1 2GB $20 web. Not guaranteed to work everytime since T-Mo is kinda hit or miss with our crappy rate plan computer systems but good luck to you all!
Still on the g1 plan... ;-)

verizon is in the process of changing thier data plans...a rep told me they are coming out with family share data plans instead of each line having its own. not sure when its going to happen but rumor is this fall.

On the new plan they can share 1 gig of data for $130 monthly with unlimited talk and text. That is the smallest plan for 2 smart phones.

Are all of the new plans going to combine voice and data in a single package? I want as much data as possible and as few voice minutes as possible. I'm on the unadvertised Loyalty Share 550 which shares 550 minutes between my phone and my wife's. We have never gone over that. I hate to pay for unlimited minutes just to get a high enough data limit. Same goes for texts, which I don't use a lot of.
I am in the same boat. I don't use text at all. I hate Verizon when it does that. But galaxy s3 that I want so, well I will update.

You have the choice even after June 28th to keep your current plan.. You will not be forced on these new bull**** plans
However, unlimited data,
After the 28th of you want to upgrade a line that has unlimited data you will have 2 choices
1 pay in full (700-800 dollars) and keep your unlimited
2 get your phone subsidized like we all usually do when getting a new 2 year, but lose unlimited data.
PSA ! If you have a upgrade and unlimited data, PREORDER YOUR SGS3 NOW or UPGRADE TO ANOTHER PHONE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Looks like I'll be a new AT&T customer here pretty soon with a Galaxy SII. I received a text from Verizon stating I will have to switch to an available smartphone plan, since I've been using an old prepaid talk and text plan from 2 years ago with $30 unlimited data. I'd sworn off contracts but there's not much choice. Prepaid GSM is a no go because they don't use the full network, so the coverage is nothing where I live. Decent HSPA+ coverage with the postpaid network though. It comes out to $84 per month for a decent plan with 3GB data and my business discount. It's been fun gents!

ATT Changed my plan from Unlimited to Family Shared without permission?

My apologies as this isnt really device specific although I do use a Note 3 with ATT. I have had a family plan for at least 8 years now, and have always been on unlimited plan for my line (Im the acct holder). Yesterday I logged into my account to see that it was now a '10gb Family Shared Plan'. I call them up and they can't tell me why or how this changed but will be looking into it.
Ironically last month was the first time I surpassed the 5gb throttle limit. Its almost as though they are purposely downgrading my plan.
Anyways not too happy about this and hopefully its a relatively smooth transition back. Just annoyed this 'randomly' happened. Has anyone else experienced something like this lately?

Actually everyone on family share plan with 10 or more gig data automatically got switched over, I had mine changed to it and the lady told me everyone would be switched over automatically. I'm sure they will switch u back, but we're probably hoping people would be willing to sacrifice unlimited for cheaper overall.

Here's a few things to note.
Unlimited is not called Unlimited anymore. It's called Unlimited access, but will be throttled at 3gb.
If you tether, you will be notified by text that you will be switched to a tethering plan the next month. (had this happen lol)
AT&T can switch you of unlimited anytime they like, read the fine print contact.
On a side note, I was on unlimted until they keep throttling me. Coming off that slow unlimited access made life better for me.
Sent from my SM-N900A using XDA Free mobile app
I still don't understand why people on ATT are trying to cling on to their Unlimited data. The people on Verizon have good enough reasons to (Verizon doesn't throttle or get pissy if you consume 10s of gigs per month, for now anyway). But on ATT your Unlimited plans are basically pointless at this point. After 3-4GB, your data essentially becomes useless after the throttle. For all intents and purposes, you can't tether. And it's actually cheaper to get access to more high-speed data every month on the newer plans. They literally made switching over to limited data a much better deal (or made keeping Unlimited a worse one, depending on how you look at it).
Just switched mine, got 10gb, tethering included and actually cheaper.

Keeping unlimited.
The catch is that if you go on the shared minutes planes, your phones are no longer subsidized... So if you upgrade your phones every two years, the cost ends up being the same, if not greater when paying monthly for the phones. This in my calculations is about a wash in terms of cost, however you do not get to keep your phones at the end. These are great plans if you byop however.

You keep your phone, just pay the remainder off. 9 out of 10 times phone has scratches, which means no giving it to therm. The thing is, you might pay the same amount in the long run (I won't because I'm saving $120 per month which equals $1440 in a year, at end of year I only owe $248 left on phone. Which leaves me with $1192 in savings.) Then I get another upgrade, which is every 12 months instead of 24. Plus no upgrade or activation fees. So tell me where this is a bad deal for me at all?
Oh and by the way its not shared minutes, in fact is unlimited talk and text.

It sounds like a better deal for you for sure. The way i'm set up to switch to next save me only $20/month before taxes. I have four lines so I get 2 upgrades a year. So I pay 240 more per year plus about 200 for each phone. This equals 640 a year with two phones. If the average phone on next is 30 a month, then there is the wash. My minutes are not unlimited, but on all lines mobile to mobile is unlimited and I rarely use more than 300. Plus they roll over so I have lots banked. Texting is also unlimited. Plus I can sell the phones at the end (I never do, though, and have 8 phones to sell or get rid of of you include the 2 phones each of my two children have to play on).
I guess how good of a deal next is depends on how good of a deal you had before. ...
They're absolute garbage. I had a 1GB family plan (you know, wifi everywhere and I never even pass that 1GB at all), so.i called them up to see why my bill was a little high then this girl was telling me that she has a better plan for me. 2GB for $5 less. I was like "hell yeah. Switch up now". Next bill was $15 over. LOL
Called them up again and downgraded back to my ole 1GB. I don't know why the lying. Do they really think people are that stupid? If you ever call them, first thing you wanna do is ask the employee about their ID number. Just say " I'd like your ID number". They can't say no. They'll get in trouble. So when an employee screws you over you just call them and ask for a manager and tell them about the employee that did it and give them the number to identify him/her. Other than that names don't work.

Att almost had me, I was about to let go of my unlimited data, I wasn't gonna save much since I wabted the 20 gb shareplan, but then I found out about the scam, I have 5 lines, sounded good to only pay 15 for each additional but how about when my mother in law wants to update for some 50 dollar renovate contract new smartphone, she never gets the most expensive, the point is that If I later want to upgrade for the best cheap offer new phone then it rises 25 for each line so instead of 228 that I pay I will end up paying 328, or if I get the next for every account, lets see at least 27 a month for 5 lines, wow arround 360, now how in hell thats gonna save me money.

Are you consistently using enough data to justify a16GB plan, or do you just want the headroom?
If you have, say for instance, a 3GB plan with 20 days left in the billing cycle and have used 2GB already, you can switch to a bigger plan, pay the prorated billing difference, but the data allowance is NOT prorated.
It is therefore also possible to use 5GB in a single day and pay only 29 days @ 3GB/cycle + 1 day at 6GB/cycle.
It would be a bother to try to squeeze every penny out of your data allowance, but unless you consistently use 16GB every month, Verizon wins and you lose $8 more dollars or more per month.
I buy lunch for no one at Verizon.
the day my data plan changes is the day I leave Verizon, love my unlimited data
