Color calibration - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed the colors on the N10 are a bit off. Are there any kernels with colorcontrol and init.d support?
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda premium

No there are not. The device just came out a couple weeks ago with an entirely new architecture. It will take time for developers to get their hands on a tablet and figure out how to make everything work.
In what way are the colors "off"?

If you rooted try using an app called Screen Adjuster. You can adjust RGB, brightness and contrast. Not sure how well it works on the n10 though.

Softkeys stuck on dim

Sorry if theres a thread on this already but all I have is my phone so bear with me.
For some reason my nexus s softkeys are stock on dim, they don't change with the brightness of the screen so its really hard to see them outside...any suggestions?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
noone?....
They are that dim by design, AFAIK.
So when you go outside, you can barely see your keys?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Can someone please confirm or deny how the keys are supposed to act before I send this in to samsung

I have never seen them more brighter or dim, always just the same. However, on the G2 for example it was possible via kernel tweaks to make them more brighter or dimmer. I'm not sure if its possible for the Nexus S though.
A picture would help.
Sent from my Xoom
As far as I've seen they have only one brightness setting.
I am pretty sure, that that the dim keys where mentioned in some review, too.
Compared to a Galaxy S, they are indeed dim. Personally, i prefer it this way, makes it much less distracting when using it in the dark, and on bright days, i have no problems with finding the buttons.

Question on display, please

Sorry, on a black background you can see the glow of the light bulb as to form a stain?
I would not be just my problemi

It looks the same as every IPS monitor ever.
Great color, great brightness, but mediocre blacks when viewed from the side
If you mean light bleeding or bad panel uniformity, yes most (if not all) have that.
R: Question on display, please
And so the infiltration of light from the top of display is normal?

Yes it's normal on IPS screens. The degree that it "infiltrates" varies between devices. my First Nexus 4 had backlight bleeding that was more obvious then the replacement device I have now. The replacement's back light bleeding is barely noticeable.
I've owned various devices with IPS screens
Asus Transformer TF101 (I've handled about 5 different devices)
Asus Transformer Prime (handled about 3 devices)
Asus Transformer Infinity(handled just the one I owned)
LG G2X (Had multiple replacments)
Nexus 4
Nexus 7(handled 3: 2 32gb HSPA+ and 1 16gb Wifi)
All had some light bleeding to a certain extent or another. Some being much worse than others.
I have a RMA for a 3rd Nexus 4 (The one I have now I love, hardly any backlight bleeding and everything is great except there is this one dark vertical line from top to bottom of the screen that you can see on white/gray backgrounds. My original Nexus 4 didn't have any of that)
If my 3rd has worse backlight bleeding than the one I currently have I might just deal with the dark line on the screen on white/gray backgrounds on my current device as that's the ONLY thing that bugs me about it.

Zero brightness.

Just got a Nexus 4, works perfectly except for when i slide brightness down to minimum the screen goes off. Like complete black. Is this supposed to happen or a hardware defect? I'm running rooted stock. The only way to fix it was to do a factory reset.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
How Black is black. If this screen is completely black ie you cant read anything, in a dark room, then its a hardware defect. However the nexus 4 can really get dim and coming fro a gnex like you, it struck me too at first.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
It's dim, but you should still be able to read it in an entirely dark room.
Please provide a snapshot.
Plus, set auto brightness that to on the most minimal level and you are good to go.
Its pitch black. Ill show a picture soon.

Optimus G screen Better

Hey I have an Optimus G along side my Nexus 4 and haven't been able to match the Optimus G screen colors with the Nexus 4.
They run the same hardware yet the G has a much nicer picture. It is even nicer than the HTC One's!
I have Franco. Kernel updater installed and have tried a few calibrations but to no avail. Is there any hope?
Ps don't flame me going on about how the Nexus is best, it is not.

Ah come one! try to be nice hahahaha. Actually LG has several software display adjustments not implemented on Nexus 4 due to Google.
May be some day they port it to Nexus 4. Nothing so far.

The Nexus 4's color's are a little washed out IMO, but since you have the Franko.Kernel updater, I'm going to assume you are rooted and have a custom kernel like Franco's or Faux's kernel. In that case, increase your saturation values in small increments until you're comfortable with those colors. If you're on stock kernel, I don't think you can expect too much, unless you flash one of PA's calibrated kernels.
Short answer: Yes there is hope. And there have been solutions to tackle this for quite a while. Just look around the dev forums.
Actually haha hope is diminished. The Optimus G has a higher ppi than the nexus 4. My friend just told me and it makes perfect sense because the Optimus G has a sharper screen.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Nexus4 is the best and the screen is vibrant with most custom kernels! Get over it or sell it.
Pretty sure they are the same screens, same ppi.
With the FKU app there are a whole set of example colour profiles, but you have to hit a menu item to load them up. You will probably be able to find one that you like, and then you can tweak it a bit further if you want.
Sent from my Nexus 4
The two phones have identical screens (In fact, most of the hardware is identical). The only difference is that the LGOG has different calibration. I don't know the exact calibration, but I know that the faux kernel has an option to set it to the OG calibration (LG presets). I just use the halfbreed calibration that I tweaked a bit on my Nexus, and it looks great
I'm not questioning your opinion on the colours but the screens are definitely the same model so you thinking the OG has a sharper display is probably just a placebo effect due to the colours. Since have the same displays you should really be able to match the colours using franco's app. Aside from the iPhone 5's screen I haven't seen a screen that has better colour reproduction than my N4's. Then again, I haven't seen a One or a OG yet either.
My eyes dont lie. Ive been using both and the Optimus G is more of a pleasure to use.

That may well be true, but I can guarantee that the OG's screen isn't sharper. Better calibrated maybe, but definitely not sharper.

Well about Nexus 4 VS Optimus G maybe Optimus G is better but the HTC One (Not One X) should have a way better screen...

While you may like the image better, sadly the eyes are the ultimate liars lol. I do home theater and HDTV calibration for a living, 10 years going...and I there isn't enough time in the day for me to tell you how horrible most people have their HDTV set when I get there, or while I'm calibrating ask why it isn't brighter or why did it look so much better in the store Lmfao. I always give the customer what they want but with the advice that having your screen at 9000k is not giving you the most true representation of the intended image but to each their own. I assure the same thing is happening here with your phone

Nexus 7 screen flickers on low brightness

Nexus 7 screen flickers on low brightness becoz i use the device at lowest possible brightness to save battery but screen flickers while using wifi specially on webpages having white background

this issue has already been discussed, a simple search and you would've found the solution. Just turn off wi-fi optimization and no more flicker

It's the Tegra smart dimming causing the flickering. Apps like Franco Kernel Updater or Tegra Prism can toggle this on or off. Might be better to manually toggle it by editing a file if you want to avoid paying for an app, but I don't know it to hand.

You could also download trickster mod and set it with that. Has paid and free versions.

Are you using the Oxydo kernel? That makes my screen flicker too, try using m-kernel

I switched off smart dimming via trickster mod the effect has been reduced but still noticible i am using this kernel

Smart dimmer is NOT the problem, why do people perpetuate this nonsense... It is some interaction between the wifi and Backlight and is only really visible when wifi signal is low, background is white, and in the dark or near. Meh.

Turn up the backlight a little, I personally don't even notice it much anymore.
I fixed it by lifting the antenna ground with a piece of scotch tape. 7 months and still going strong.

I had this problem. It was very common around the time the nexus 7 was released.
From what I remember, it's a hardware issue with low WiFi signal interfering with the backlight, as someone above said.
Your options as I recall are to crack it open and attempt fixing yourself, voiding your warranty. Or just send it off. I sent mine off and received a new replacement. It was obviously a common complaint because they didn't even enquire further after I briefly described the problem.
Send it off, save yourself the headache of a hack job gone wrong.
