[Q] Googleears on Nexus 4? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
The Nexus 4 does not have Google ears installed however in /system/app, googleears.apk is shown, but will not install.
Is there a solution to installing this app? I've pulled it and tried to install via adb but it fails..
Dan

Its a widget.

Yes i'm aware of that.. I'm saying that it isn't installed, and will not install... I'm asking why.

it is installed.. it's a widget. attempting to install a system app from a file explorer in your system folder will fail as it is already installed.

It is not installed.. If it was, then installing via adb would tell me it's installed.

Perhaps it's frozen and not available in your location. If you're rooted you can unfreeze it using Package Enabler in play store

It would be this.

It's frozen for UK phones. Unfreeze with Titanium Backup then feel free to add the widget

Strange that they don't enable this widget now that Google Music is available in the UK. I don't fancy wiping my phone just to root so I can unfreeze this. For now I'm using the free Sony TrackID app which has always worked well on previous phones.

Don't have my n4 yet but is it avail in the UK. I know I could get it to work but it was not stock on the gnex gsm.
Looks like I took too long writing my comment its already been answered lol
Just the same as the gnex then oh well unfreeze it.

I too am in the same position as OP. It's in /system/app but doesn't come up as a widget option and isn't considered installed according to android.
What's weird is that it worked on my Galaxy Nexus months ago without any modifications.

Code:
su
pm enable com.google.android.ears
It's good to use 'til next reboot.

Ya I have that same problem too It works just like what you said next reboot kills it

cant defros
Hi!
i have a problem. i cant defrost google ears on my nexus 4 with titanium backup pro. google ears is crossed out!? its not possible to push the frost/defrost/uninstall button. Phone is rooted. i live in austria and bought the n4 in germany (maybe its important)
i made 2 screenshots.
Thanks for help!

Use the command I posted early from a terminal instead.

It's weird, I am in Australia, I have a Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 and I don't have the widget on either. I got the Nexus 7 on second shipment from JB HiFi and than I suggested it to a friend, who got it 3 months after, from Officeworks and he has the app
PS he doesn't even know what rooting is.

Tried putting this in an init.d script but it was still frozen. Must be a race condition, i.e. init.d script running before some other process freezes it

I've found a work around.
After doing the enable command, you will be able to update Ears from the Play Store and then it will persist.
You won't be able to search for it, so use this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.ears

Nope. I enabled it and Google Play tells me the app isn't available in my country with no options to update it.

after the phone updates and boots DO NOT REBOOT AGAIN!!! connect your phone via usb and run the command 'adb logcat'
post it here and we'll get the link extracted from it.
I got it, it makes my phone look clean

Well, how can I run "adb logcat"? sorry MONSTER NOOB
Is the performance any better?
Ditto to the above. I'm currently updating, just excited to see if there have been lag/battery enhancements.
Got it about 4 hours back.. it was a pleasant surprise.
Feels much smoother.
Also I don't lose all my widgets after a restart. Yay.
Is it just me? Apps on SD seem to have disappeared from the drawer...
I had to 'crash' the drawer and then let it reload... weird
davyu: They were missing for me too at first but after few minutes they reappeared. Most likely because update clears some cache and Nexus has to reload it again.
Google now runs SMOOTHLY now, OMG

All share cast dongle s/w update

Hey all.
Running Omega 9. Removed all bloat ware during installation now this all share cast dongle s /w update has appeared as of yesterday. Any idea what it is & how to remove?
It's shows in play store as installed but can't find in phone anywhere.
If u select it does it have the option to uninstall it?

No option to remove which is weird. I've had Omega 9 since release and this hasn't been there, now all of a sudden it is. As far as I know, it can't update unless I have all share cast app installed. So for now it's just there.
Looked in root, but it's not there.
Weird very weird

Solved!
Removed FWUpgrade.apk from root & now it's gone from play store too.
Uninstalled Allshare cast dongle s/w update
I replied as a guest before joining xda. Don't see that reply, so will reply again. I don't recall downloading this sharing app because I don't have the device (dongle) installed on my TV. Therefore, it's a useless app for me.
I just went to task manager, downloads and it popped up with other d/l apps. Had option to uninstall, so I tapped it and app was uninstalled.
Not savvy enough to check further (like root, or whatever; don't really know what root is). Will assume I fixed it unless it pops back up.
Using Samsung Galaxy S4.

[WARNING] HDX Update Released + Amazon open source

This is a notice for 2 things the impending update and the emulator.
I'm unsure if anybody has taken notice but Amazon's Source Code Notice page has an emulator (1314_3.0.1_Emulator_1_32_src.tar.gz) for the Hdx along with each version revision. Hope this is of some use to someone. This takes me to my main point.
The kindle update page does not have the 13/14.3.2.0 update listed yet (for Thor and Apollo). But on their Open Source Notice page it has kindle_src_1314.3.2.0_user_320091620.tar.bz2 listed. It's seems Amazon lets dev's on the update before it is released.
Amazon may have patched the root in the update (just a guess don't quote me). We need to look into this.
Hope this notice thread was useful. Please leave a response.
-UPDATE-
Kindle Fire HDX version 1314.3.2.1 update was just released (13=Thor, 14=Apollo). It now appears this update breaks root permissions.
Here is my current config but please be careful. It seemed to block the update.
I'm running from a safestrap rom slot
My stock rom has wifi disabled and android firewall blocking everything
From stock I renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.old in /etc/security/ <--- No effect
From stock I also renamed com.amazon.dcp.apk to com.amazon.dcp.apk.old in /system/app/ <--- ......I think this is it + it needs something extra
My rom slot has thor-gapps-rom-2.zip installed on it and android firewall is not running on it
Until we're sure what this update breaks and does, stay watchful and power off at night.
DO NOT LET THIS UPDATE INSTALL IF YOU WANT ROOT ACCESS!
How could we prevent the automatic update?

Renaming otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.old in /etc/security/ might do it but was never tested. Blocking ip's with iptables or block specific app from gaining a connection. Keeping the HDX off or wifi off. Running from a rom slot may also work for blocking the stock from updating.

You will usually see updates there about 3 to 5 days before they push or are posted to the firmware download page in my experience.
Thank you both Faznx92 and GSLEON3 for the useful tips.
So if this update comes it won't be automatically installed will it? Will I have the option to Deny the update?

If you're lucky enough, you could cancel the update right before your machine finishes the downloading and starts the automatic update by itself.

Amazon auto updates. You can't stop it if you want to use wifi for some time. You may see it download but it may just happen. My hdx updated to the current version overnight on standby (back in November). I turn it off at night even though I'm on a safestrap rom slot. I think a lot a people may lose root. I hope the old gapps rom zip I'm using now conflicts with the update software. I also renamed the otacerts file and run Iptables to block some app connections.
I did the Android firewall block so hopefully that'll take care of that. No updates since I did that so can't say it works but I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Is there an app responcible for updating the system?
Yeah, I'm using droidwall. I hope it works too. This site gave some useful info.
here
Airplane mode for the next few days.
My attempts to prevent and update currently include the following:
* Moving of the otacerts as noted on this thread.
* Installed Android Firewall in white list mode and only allowing access to apps as needed so everything I need works.
* From the firewall logs you can see that going into device settings and checking for and update blocks some amazon apps. I have, based on the logs renamed /system/apps/com.amazon.dcp.apk to com.amazon.dcp.apkBak. This has made all subsequent attempts at going into device settings and having it check for an update fail.
I am hopeful all of the above should stop updates. Please note the renaming of a system apk was done in a rom slot after installing safestrap. I would not recommend messing with system apps otherwise. Also there are two other com.amazon.dcp.apk packages. Messing with them will cause some other things to break in settings and will also break the stock launcher(which I use to launch the stock Kindle app which crashes under Apex launcher).
My xposed mod should also prevent ota updates if your rooted.

I´m giving Cpasjuste a try
A couple of hours ago i was thinking about to push my perfect working slot rom to stock rom, to use the whole capacity of 64 Gb,
but now I´m not shure to do this.
I´ll wait for the update now.
At this point I also want to give a big Thanks to Cpasjuste for his work:good:

Unless I'm mistaken & I'm 99% certain I'm not, you have access to all 64Gb of storage. It is a loopback partition with the same shared storage pool, unless you have a gazillion apps, it should be fine. The biggest app files are usually .obb's which reside in /sdcard/android, which again, is in the shared storage. You don't really lose anything, you just only have 4Gb for the secondary (loopback) /system & /data partitions.

MiiTomo App From Nintendo

Has anyone tried the Nintendo Miitomo app? Although it's not in the US play store yet, I was able to sideload after downloading from Nintendo UK. It installs with no problem, but when I try opening it, it crashes with "Unfortunately Miitomo has stopped." Tried rebooting to see if memory issue but no luck. I have systemless root, so not sure if that's the problem, or that it's incompatible with the Nexus or Marshmallow.
I tried it and got the same result

It is definitely due to Root, but I just used Rootcloak, an Xposed module, and it is now working perfectly. Stock Nexus 6P, latest security update, rooted, running Xposed (obviously)

Gotcha. I am indeed using systemless root, and am not sure how to get around this without Xposed, as Xposed is almost entirely the reason I root in the first place. (I do miss NFC payments, but not enough to get rid of Xposed)

This could be really annoying specially at a new phone.
I know this is very uncomfortable (specially if you have done all the settings etc.) but the next steps would be factory reset or flashing the stock Honor 8 rom...
I solved the issue now.
I removed my google account and signed in again. but for the first time I had unmarked the auto sync option(Cause I hate auto-sync It was draining the battery on my nexus badly). Anyway This time I chose auto sync when it prompt before sign in to google account and It worked.
Thanks for the responses again
