How to use custom SMS sounds? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With stock app that is, how can I put my own custom sound instead of Google's selection?
If it can't be done then what SMS app do I need?

Put the music file you'd like to use in your notifications folder.
It should show up when you look through the collection of notification sounds.

Or have a folder called "audio" then inside desperate folders of "Ringtones" and "Notifications" folder. I'm use to doing this from other phones.

Desperate and Seperate, you know. they rhyme.

In your internal storage, put them in /media/audio/notifications/
Then they will appear in the list with the stock sounds

/media/audio/xxx is the pre-ICS way of doing it.
Now you have the Notifications, Ringtones, Alarms folders on the root of your MTP storage.
Some apps still create the old folder structure if it's missing, though (I'm looking at you, Facebook *shakes fist*)

Haha I had no idea it had changed, always done it that way since 1.5 on the HTC hero

I use the instructions above for random odds-and-ends sounds I want to use, but Zedge for searching and finding a bunch of others. I have the "Tory and Abed in the Morning" jingle for my text sound.

If your to lazy for that, download Ringdroid from the market and it will do it for you.

Car alarm lock sounds

Hi I was trying to get the lock and unlock car alarm sounds for my lock, I tried to replace the files but no luck anyone have this?

Use Root Explorer for this, make sure the files that you are using are in .ogg format and named Lock.ogg and Unlock.ogg. Go to system/media/audio/ui. Replace the ones there with the ones you want and thats it.
Kool idea!

I got this from my friends iPhone lol but yes I already did what you said, but the .ogg wouldn't read

What do you mean? You made sure they were named Lock.ogg and Unlock.ogg?
Yeah I did, and they didn't work, my phone just went crazy with my ring tone and damn thing wouldn't stop until I replaced with the original sound
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Yeah you need to convert them to .ogg format. Just renaming the file wont work. I use wave pad on the pc or tapemachine on your phone.
I spent ages with the same problem... Make sure you rename, not remove, the old Lock and Unlock files. The first time I had a frustrating experience when I removed both files and my phone would play a ringtone on each lock and unlock. I found out after using audacity/ that the program I was using before didn't convert it to the right .ogg format. If anyone wants the files I have them on my computer. As cool as it was when I first did it the sounds were a bit too loud and became VERY annoying at night so my files are pretty quiet but still there. Using the program linked about you can adjust the gain to your preference.
Nice well I flashed cm 7 so I kinda gave up on it

Phone Notifications

I need some more notification tones for my phone the ones that come stock are to few. Can somebody point me in the right directions to get some awesome notification tones so I can pimp out my phone thank you
You can download soundboards of your choice from the market and use them. I had Charlie Sheen saying "winning" for a while.

Make a few folders on the root of your SD card named ringtones, notifications, and alarms. Put the corresponding sound effect in each, and voila.

Install Zedge. It has thousands of notification sounds you can hear before you download.

Wtf! Double files!

I am rooted with synergy. For some reason, no matter which music player I use, it's showing double tracks. I have songs saved to my sd card, and the same ones at mnt/sd card. If I delete one our the other, it deletes both! Why is it doing this?!

Looks like there is a symlink. Do you have adb shell access or terminal application?
I have no idea what those are. Ha. I'm new to all this stuff. I don't have those.

I'm experiencing the same problem and hope someone has a helpful solution
I've noticed the volume on the Note 3 to be the same as on the 2, however the sound seems to be much better. Especially when using an external speaker via bluetooth.
Sound is better than sgs3 but it is a lot quieter. It badly needs an amp

Without custom recovery can we get boosted sound?
I am using V4A mod after rooting.

I was checking out the N3 at the mall today and pulled up the sample music file. I was surprised that I couldn't even hear it over the mall noise.

You sure can, Viper4Android.
this works pretty good, just extract the files in the system folder and place them in the corresponding folder on your phone with root explorer, change permissions then reboot.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469463
Are there any sound boosters that work on Samsung Note 3? All of the above mentioned are not compatible so far. Ringer is very quiet at max volume

Is this the default_gain file mod?
I couldn't find the stock file. It definitely worked on 4.1.2 touchwiz, but I can't see how it would work if there's no file to begin with.
Used to be in system/etc/ folder but for the life of me, can't find it now on 4.3

Where are u putting the files at??
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Viper4Android allows you to customize headphone sound and phone speaker sound separately just like a few other equalizer/sound mod apps do. It's available in the Play Store and it works wonders. The sound I got out of my old phone (S3) and my current phone (Note 3) with V4A made a huge undeniable difference.
Link to download the .apk and install from Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vipercn.viper4android4x&hl=en
It has multiple types of volume boost functions along with a great equalizer and many other useful features.

When u unzip the file preferably in root expkorer there are two folders in the file go thru them one has 2 file in it one has 1 file in it. The one that has one in it is the one u need follow the folders name that that file was in and put it in the corresponding folder in system. I know it sounds confusing I will edit this in a few I was typing this and realized I deleted the zip after moving the file.
Edit....
Move this file to system>etc>(file)

I definitely know how/where to put the file....permissions...etc.
Just wanted to see if it actually made a difference since stock TW doesn't have this file anymore. If not having a stock file in place to begin with, adding a edited version would seem to be useless.
Just curious

Ahh ok. Didn't realize there was another file that controls this.
The one I remember was default_gain.conf or something like that. I used to manually edit that file to suit my needs.
Thanks for the info. Gonna try it now.
