Verizon Unlimited dataplan and tethering (internet sharing) - Windows Phone 8 General

Can anyone with HTC 8X or Nokia 822 confirm what happens when you turn on internet sharing with an unlimited data plan? Does it prompt you to call Verizon to activate a tethering plan? Or does it just work?

Its tells me to call Verizon and subscribe....nokia 822... I have rooted galaxy nexus I use for tethering

Carries suck.
This kind of stuff irks me. Why do they charge you more to use the exact same data?

I have a brand-new 8X. when I turn on IS, it says "connection not shared - Internet sharing isn't currently allowed." However I am not on the new all-share unlimited plan until the 20th, so maybe that's why.

I have a VZ unlimited data plan and after changing some settings, it just works.. before you get the agreement page to add it to your plan, but after going into edit mode: M.I.P. profile > DUN NM the info has your number @dun.vzw... just take out the dun and save.. but I have an HTC trophy... so may not be the same..

Is there any way to create an App that does this? Verizon recently lost a suit from the FCC that forced them to allow tethering apps from the android market for android phones. FoxFi and others now allow tethering no matter what plan you have.
If the access exists within WP8 it would be sweet to do the same thing, even if it has to be developer unlocked.

I was just coming here to find out if this was possible. I currently have a 32gb SIII and am getting ready to trade it for a 8X but need this to work. I am not willing to give up my unlimited plan though...

can we sue ATT, Verizon for tethering lock?

No we can't sue them about the lock. The reason they were able to go after them was because they blocked an app from the marketplace from working on their network.
That violated the agreement they signed with the FCC when they acquired the 700MHZ block which says “shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and application of their choice.”
So only Verizon is beholden to this and it would only apply to them blocking devices or apps. You might notice that devices part is pretty interesting

HD2 Data questions?

I ordered a HD2, And am on AT&T. Wouldnt mind killing my 30$ data plan, is there any way to stop it from connecting, and can AT&T tell I have a smart phone?

to answer your question first, yes you can cancel your data plan and stop the HD2 from connecting to ATT data (by not setting up your device during your first setup, or you can just delete the media net settings after setup is complete. i.e. selected AT&T as your network during the first boot up).
AT&T would not recognize your device, as it is not listed in theit IMEI bank under AT&T's system. (you can just tell the representative that you have an old flip phone, if they ever call you to get the imei of your phone since it is not going to appear in their system or at the time that you cancel your data service, as i am sure they will ask you why are you terminating the iphone plan). so make sure you have an old cingular or At&t phone that you can give out the IMEI when you made the call. (This will also benefit you in the future, if you ever decided to get a medianet unlimited for $15.00 which is the perfect data plan for HD2 under AT&T since your HD2 (assuming that it is a T8585 or a Tmobile brand phone and HSDPA or 3G will not be supported.)
Im sorry but i just don't see the use of having a device such as the HD2 without using the data. Im sure that you are aware that HD2's features such as weather, maps, facebook, etc.. require's an internet connection right??? so if you decided to cancel your plan, you can only be connected thru Wifi or if ever you permit, AT&T pay per use is extremely expensive.
1Cent = 1KB
opening yahoo.com webpage = assuming 1,024KB = 1MB = $1.00
so think about it really good if i were you.
cheers
I think one problem is that the T-mo HD2's are showing up as Blackberries so they are going to force the $30 data plan regardless. I'm 100% positive they think I have a blackberry but I'm hoping that someone can tell me that they don't enforce the $30 plan in this instance?

HD2 and Web2Go

anyone have any idea if this is going to work, bc my only other windows phone was the dash and i used to use the old school Tzones for $2.99 on that.
On the same boat bro, I am currently paying $15 a month for unlimited data on Sprint and I DONT want a $30 bloated data plan, does Web2Go work on smartphones if you buy retail $450.00 ????
Probably not, T-Mobile does IMEI checks now to see if you're provisioned correctly. While you may use them on other windows Mobile phones, the HD2 is considered a special device and will require the regular data package like Android.

I'll second that answer, but more definitively than 'probably.' Full smartphone data plan required.
Web2Go will work. You have to change the apn in the data settings from epc.tmobile.com to internet2.voicestream.com. I've had several iPhones, Touch Pro 2, and now T-Mobile USA HD2 (got mine last week from Wal-Mart w/no commitment) and I have NEVER had a problem. T-Mobile doesn't perform any provisioning checks or scans that's BS! I've had service since '99 (Powertel=>Voicestream=>T-Mobile)!

Do you have the phone set up as the HD2 on the T-mobile website under your account or as another phone?
That's odd because i use to use my HD with one of the cheap plans (since they didn't have the IMEI numbers for the HD initially). However, after a couple months, I could no longer use the phone unless it had the unlimited smartphone plan (and everyone else reported the same thing on the Blackstone forum). As far as I know, Tmobile does check IMEI and it will detect that HD2 is a smartphone will not let you connect unless you have the proper plan.
Thanks for the heads up k2trill, imma buy an HD2 retail and set up Web2Go. Ill let you guys know how it goes, expect a response in a week.
set it up as "my phone is not listed" option.
I am asuming as much as we read these forums Tmobile will too so there you go - from time to time they will create some sort of firewall (by changing the options and settings) to force us into Web2Go... I want to see how this goes as I will not purchase HD2 to subscribe on additional $30 ripoff... Web2Go I can live with...

Dataplan with ATT

I bought 2 focus for the family plan through ATT. I added $15 data plan one of the focus phone, other phone without data plan. Is ATT eventually (automatically) add data plan to the phone without data plan? All I need just WIFI one of the focus phone. how do I set focus just for WIFI not dataplan? or this is just a waste of time (att automatically add it no way u can hide it)? why not att force me to add data plan when I buy it? is focus not smartphone?
thanks

Probably. Like the minute you turned the phone on, you will receive a text message from AT&T.

There is a check box in settings for cell data. You can uncheck it and your phone will only use wi-fi.

Probably the mistake of the CSR who sold you the phone. Focus definitely is a smartphone.
AT&T will put a data plan on your phone at some point if you are using cellular data.
If you have yet to receive a text with a message like "We noticed that your phone does not have a data plan. We have added the correct service to your device," then maybe you got lucky!
Better safe than sorry. You should get the afforementioned text message from AT&T but if you don't, that doesn't mean they didn't send one. It may mean that....oh right, you're on AT&T. Log into the web site and check to see if you have one, what tier it's set at and so on. Once upon a time they had one plan, now they have a couple and it would suck to get 200MB/mo and go way over because you assumed you had more. AT&T doesn't discount for poor assumptions, be certain.

It was ATT website no CSR involved, but if I try IPhone then there is no skip option to avoid data plan.
I have a different question though.
What if I have WIFI on (Available) and I try to use internet, which connection would focus use WIFI or ATT data plan? someone can confirm?
Thanks,

Ulimited Data -Amazon Purchase

I just received my Focus from the Amazon $49 deal and was able to transfer my iPhone's unlimited data plan to it. This is only possible if you have a "grandfathered" device which already has unlimited data on it, as AT&T has dropped the unlimited plan.
Heres How:
Order your phone on Amazon. Choose any data plan, doesn't matter.
When your phone arrives, charge it, but, DO NOT PUT IN THE SIM CARD.
Have your SIM Card and Box out and available as you will need them.
DO NOT ACTIVATE THE PHONE AS PER AT&T'S INSTRUCTIONS on their web-site.
Call AT&T Wireless [1-800-331-0500]
DO NOT ACTIVATE YOUR PHONE USING THE AT&T MENU
Press "0" to speak to an agent.
Ask to migrate your existing plan over to your new Samsung Focus. This will move your Unlimited Data Plan to your new phone.
Provide the numbers from the phone box
Provide the SIM number from your new SIM.
Have the Agent activate the phone and call your phone to make sure it is working.
There, you should now have a fully activated phone with Unlimited Data.
This is how I was told to do it from Amazon and it works.
If you miss your Visual Voicemail from the iPhone, sign up for Google Voice (www.google.com/voice). You will never miss it!
Enjoy
should this work for any phone purchased through amazon wireless?
yes, I had activated with the $15 plan but then I called them to put back my old unlimited data plan.
my billing cycle is up today so tomorrow i have to see if its still unlimited if its not then im going to call them because on my plan now it still says unlimited.
I wonder if there is anyone out there who could shed some light on this?
I was not able to apply my $15 unlimited data plan that I was on before upgrading to the new Focus because my old device was not a smart phone? I upgraded from the Pantec Matrix.
Thanks,

Smartphone and Non Smartphones are 2 different data plans. Since the Focus is a smartphone the only way for you to get unlimited data for a smartphone, you have to have had a smartphone and that data plan.

Correct, I've have a HTC Hermes since '07 with a UL Data plan. Ordered 2 Focus's today through ATT Premier (buy one get one free) and was able to apply the UL plan to it, 2GB plan to my Wife's.

forgot to mention this only works for people already using the unlimited data plan!
Thanks everyone. Now I feel sad for not taking any upgrade offers to smartphones in the past
I did exactly what is said in the first post. Ordered from Amazon with 2gb and 1500 message plan. I called att to transfer my plan but the rep said I could not. The rep said that I could Not transfer my existing plan (media net 200 bundle with unlimited data) because my previous phone was not a smart phone. I told her I had htc fuze and she was puzzled. She talked to supervisor and still said I could not keep my old plan.

Slow tethering (<200Kbps), APN options grayed out, PdaNet not working, T-Mobile

My T-Mobile 6T has been great so far, but when I used the hotspot earlier today I was disappointed by the wireless tethering speeds. I popped the SIM card back into my old phone (unlocked Mate 9) and, although wireless speeds were slower overall, the tethering was much faster. I attempted to edit the APN settings, but everything was grayed out. I was able to add my own APN, but when attempting to enter 'APN type' received a message saying "Carrier does not allow adding APNs of type dun." Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? Is T-Mobile trying to get me to pay more for 4G tethering by somehow slowing my hotspot to below 3G speeds? Would the international ROM be able to circumvent this?
Thanks
if you're paying for 4G tethering, then call T mobile and ask for help
If you're trying to steal it without paying for it, thats a different story

Not trying to steal 4G, just wondering why the 6T's hotspot is slow much slower than my old phone when the the phone itself is so much more capable. My Mate 9 gets closer to full 3G speeds (500Kbps) when tethering.
Thanks
The only stealing that would be going on is the carrier trying to get him to pay for the same data twice.
