[Q] I want to use CM10.1, but I can't find a gapps package that works - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any ideas? I've tried pushing system apps to the device, but I get nothing but force closes....
So does anybody know of a gapps package that will flash on 4.2.1(cm10.1)?

I'm using the Banks one from N4 themes and apps, no FC's. Contains the appropriate files in addon.d for b/u of Gapps during flashes etc... Although I won't know if CM has re-merged that functionality until I flash tomorrow's build.

Thanks I'll give that a try, I'll give that one a go. Didn't even see that one!!

[q] cm7 gapps updated

Anyone know how to make or have a link to a gapps zip that is updated with google play for CM7 based ROMs?
http://goo.im
Yeah that one is missing google play still has the old market and it takes a long time to update everything when flashing a old ROM. I did find this post and I'm testing it out now looks like this guy has done a good job keeping the gapps updated.

[Q] CyanDelta, Franco, and CM

So, here is something I just noticed. If you are running the latest CyanogenMod nightly, and want to use Franco's kernel, there is a bit of an overlap. I use CyanDelta to keep the nightly semi-up-to-date (I've set it to check for the latest nightly every three days). This app is great because it because does a diff to see what has changed between the presently flashed nightly and the current one - and only downloads the components that have been modified (e.g. ~6-10 MB download instead of 100-200). Awesome.
However, when you flash the latest nightly, CM actually flashes *its own kernel*, overwriting Franco's. So, if you want to stay up to date on the nightlies, you have to flash the kernel twice (once during the CM update, and again to re-apply Franco's).
I'm almost wondering if I should just not bother with Franco's - at least until a stable CM comes out and updates will be less frequent. What do you all think?
AW: [Q] CyanDelta, Franco, and CM
You can add a second ZIP in the flash que . For that you have to move your Franco kernel ZIP into the cyandelta folder and check it as secondary ZIP in cyandelta . Then it will automatically flashed after the nightly update .
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That is a great idea. Is there a way to set a custom directory for Franco's kernel updater? Right now, or downloads to the root directory - but it would be better if it downloaded it's nightlies directly to the CyanDelta directory.

There is an option to set a custom download directory, but it didn't work last time I tried it.
I missed that option before but you are right - it is there under "custom kernel settings". I added Cyandelta to the path (no forward slash) and grabbed the latest kernel nightly and it seemed to download to the right place! Awesome!
Here is another quick (and easy) question: Now that I have CyanDelta all set-up, do I really need to reflash gapps alongside every CM nightly?
Right now, when CyanDelta updates, it flashes: the latest incremental update to CM, then the 12-12-12 gapps, then fracno's kernel. Does that sound right?

Sounds good, but you don't necessarily have to re-flash gapps every time. The apps will stay on the phone when you flash a new nightly.
Thanks, that is what I thought. Is there any rule of thumb about when gapps does need to be reflashed? Is it only when it gets updated and one would want the latest version?

Reflash gapps if you came from a fresh rom install. Just flash the latest gapps zip available. If the apps are not updated you will just have to update it through playstore same as any other app updates.

Reinstall Gaaps after each ROM update ?

I used to update ROMs on my Motorola Defy, but I never had to reinstall Gaaps.
When you update PA, you have to reinstall Gaaps (if I have understand well), is it the same for ofther Nexus 4 ROMs ?
I'm really confused, thanks
PS: Do you still have to update ROMs using recovery (flash .zip) ? Or is there apps which do that ? I heard CyanogenMod have now an OTA update function, is it the same for PA ?
on most roms you do have to reflash the gapps after flashing the rom, unless the rom includes a script that saves them. but, it takes a few seconds to reflash the gapps anyways.

You could make your own script to save them if you wanted. It's not difficult. However, I think occasionally the PA devs modify the gapps with their own changes so that is why they don't setup a script to save them since you would need the new custom versions.
btw, you're better off flashing in recovery. apps that flash occasionally mess up. goo manager can be used to download and flash roms/gapps/kernels.
Ok thanks guys !

Hi,
It's like on all custom roms (CM, AOSP, AOKP). If I remember right Google requested that the Gapps should not be included in the roms. It was at the time of my Gnex if I'm not wrong.
At a moment LiquidSmooth rom included the Gapps and they remove them due to Google policy.
Maybe a dev can reply... Need to confirm but there was an history about the request from Google to not include the Gapps but as a separate package.
EDIT: more information here: http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps

As the guys above said, it's mostly a license issue. You cannot include Gapps in a product you launch as your own because unlike other apps like Messaging and Camera, Gapps are not exactly a part of AOSP; they are made by Google. The thing is, developers like the one for your Motorola Defy get away with adding gapps in their ROMs because they are unofficial builds of CM and Google cannot keep a check on all the ROMs out there. The same way the case for my Samsung Galaxy Ace.
For official builds, however, you always require Gapps package to be flashed separately because Google has an eye on the official ones.

Well like some of you might have seen on my other threads I'm planning to set up a minimal phone Rom with cm 10.2 and gapps.
Im planning to remove some preinstalled cm 10.2 apps like Apollo or terminal etc.
Will they come back when I update to the next nightlie or stay away ?

oh.. if they have the script that saves gapps, then yea they will still be there. if they arent using the script that saves gapps, then you have to flash them every time. but if you delete system apps that arent part of the gapps package but part of the rom, then they will come back after every rom flash.
Someone posted a flashable zip file that run a script to remove defined files, but I don't know the thread.
Instead of using nightlies, just use snapshots and stable builds so you don't have to worry about it often.

Let's say there are 20+ apks, lib.so, ringtones to remove and you want to flash a set of files to the rom as well. It's much faster.

I know, but then I have to navigate to /system/lib, /system/media and /system/tts/ to delete files, then i have to copy files to /system/app, /system/lib, /system/media/, system/usr/, /system/audio, and /system/etc and edit the boot.prop, but I just drag and drop on my computer for that for now.

[GAPPS][4.4.x] Unofficial GApps [12-Dec-2013]

Put together using PA GApps's structure and updated files from different ROMs, together with factory images.. The install script will show the it'll install pa_gapps-full-4.4-20131126-signed.zip, but, in reality, it will install the new files compatible with 4.4.x The backup script works, but I highly recommend installing GApps at each ROM update, since, sometimes, it just doesn't work very well. I always flash GApps when updating, and I never have issues this way.
You can either wait for the OP of PA GApps to update the package, or use this.
I am not responsible for any damage to the device. Do a backup before, just in case! A boot loop is the worst case scenario that can happen. Didn't happen on my end, and I hope it won't happen to you guys, either.
Enjoy!
UPDATE 12-Dec-2013
Pack updated with 4.4.2 files.
NOT compatible with ART (didn't test, though - might as well work, since the base structure and files from PA's GApps and BaNkS' GApps are ART-compatible; in case you want to test out, do a nandroid first!)
PhotoSphere installs only on hammerhead, manta, mako, razor; no Google Dialer
Link #1
PhotoSphere and GDialer for all devices (Might cause errors, two dialers & two cameras, beware! It's a forced method, by including both the dialer and camera in /system/app and /system/priv-app)
Link #1
GApps mini modular package
Link #1
Credits go to BaNkS for letting me use files from his GApps.
Credits go to hanschke for testing out.
Credits go to TKruzze for the structure of GApps.
