[Q] Weird rattling noise when tapping top bottom of phone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: I found a thread about this same issue leading me to believe it's not an issue in the first place. Still, the thread seems to be more about this occurring when shaking the phone so it could be it's own thing...
Sorry if this has been covered already but I couldn't find any threads that addressed this particular issue.
When holding my N4 with the back facing downward and tapping the top bottom, there is a light rattle as if something were loose. There is no rattle if tapped elsewhere or if the phone is placed with the front facing downward.
I thought it might be the volume rocker, but holding that in place doesn't make a difference.
Anyone have anything like this? You might need to listen closely.

You know what? Just notice that too. I hold both buttons down and still hear a rattle. I think its the vibration motor or the camera optics since the noise is coming from the top of the screen.

Yes, the general consensus is that it's part of the camera that rattles

No. Almost every single phone on the market does this (the Nexus 4's might be more audible though, I don't know. Either way, it's not going to change by getting a different one)

I wonder if there is a way to diy fix it?

Its the continuous focus mechanism in the camera. All phones with continuous focus make some rattle.

Yours makes a rattle sound too I'm guessing?

Yes, I'm sure they all do

Oh well, I'm getting a replacement. Its annoying that it does this. Other users who have this phone say theirs doesn't make this sound. Plus, my gnex never rattled nor does my friends GS3. My screen might be not as sensitive or colors might be washed out. Those things don't bother me, but this just makes it sound like something is loose inside. If the replacement is like that too, then I guess I'll have to settle.

Tinkering sound when you shake it

I requested an RMA because of the buzzing noise near the earpiece and the sound of something loose when you shake the phone, but the RMA came with the same problems. Is this happening with everyone's phone? It's a bit unnerving..
My phone has both a slight buzzing and the shaking sound. The buzzing is so quiet I have to be smashing the phone against my ear to heart it. The shaking I believe one of the components of the camera. I believe the majority of the people here have the shaking "problem".

Thanks for the reply. Good to know.
I think it's the accelerometer that do this noise, my N4 do the same noise as well.

My sound is perfect. I do have a little rattle if I smack it gently with the palm of my hand. I don't do that much. No worries about it though for me.
I have a slight buzz if I hold it up to my ear, but never notice it otherwise. I think it rattles a bit also. Oh well, love it.
The rattle is the auto focus. it is not a defect
Treat your Nexus like a baby. Don't shake it.
I have earpiece sound as well as the sound of the camera-focus when I shake it. But I'm not going to RMA this as long as it does not harm my phone.
this is normal in all do not worry nexus
I'm pretty sure the shaking sound is actually the ejection mechanism for the SIM card. There was a post about it here somewhere.

No, that's actually the first thing I checked. The sound comes from the camera. At least in my case, maybe some people have different. Whatever, I'm gonna use for a few days and see if that bothers me.

This is true, my iPhone 5 and LG Optimus G both rattled the same way as my nexus 4.
Not trying to sound mean, but use the search feature next time. There are already mulitple posts and I think 2 threads about this exact problem. Just a hint for future problems. Chances are, whatever problem you have has already been discussed.
Why do u shake ur phone ?

The rattling noise and what causes it (with pictures)

There are many complaints about a rattling noise from somewhere inside the N4 when shaking the device or setting it down on a table. I myself have this noise and at first I was concerned to what it was. I tried to figure it out and here are the results.
First of we have to differentiate between two different noises. (Correct me at any point if I should be wrong)
1.The noise from the autofocus system of the camera which is totally normal on most modern smartphones. You can normally only hear it when you tap on the back of the device and it’s not very loud.
2.The much louder noise you hear when you shake your device or for example set it down on a table or other surfaces. This noise is what I will try to explain here.
I can tell you right away that this louder noise is not caused by any lose electronic part inside the phone, so don’t worry. This noise doesn’t seem to be present on all N4 devices as some people say that they definitely don’t have it. Here is what I discovered.
The rattle comes from the “SimTrayEjector”. There is a mechanism you press to eject your simcardtray that pushed the tray out from the back of the slot. This mechanism is a moving part and causes the noise when you shake the device. I tried to take a few photos to explain where the noise originates.
On the first picture you can see where you press the pin on to the ejector. This ejector has some play and moves back and forth, this is what causes the rattle. You can test it by just pressing the ejector tool in a little bit and shaking the device. I think a simple rubber damper would have prevented the entire problem.
Here are some more pictures of the ejector. It moves back and forth.
I hope this helped to explain the the rattle and calm people down a little.

This is the Q&A section. People were Questioning the rattle and he found the Answer. I think his posting section is appropriate.
I wonder if there is a way to dampen the ejector somehow. Maybe a tiny piece of rubber or something.

Hi there!
Is there any proposed solution for this? Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
OP, thanks for figuring this out, it would not have been an easy find.
I too was wondering if anyone had found a solution for this problem. My phone has both the rattle and the creaking, but I didn't want to exchange it for those two things alone (at least my screen was good). Some have posted solutions to the creaking, but the other people really complaining about the rattling seemed to have RMAed or just accepted it.
I did notice that taking the tray out and putting it back in reduces the rattling for a while.

[Q] Verizon G2 Rattles When Shaken: Problem?

My G2 makes a rattling sound when shaken, but only in certain situations. When holding my phone normally, with the screen facing me, and shake the device away from and towards myself, I don't hear anything. However if shaken up-down or side-side, I hear a plastic, rattling noise that seems to come from around the camera. Is this normal, or do I have something to be concerned about? I keep pressure on all buttons, and even the SIM card tray, and still hear it.
Broken or loose IOS?

Thats what I was afraid of. Is there any way to verify whether or not that's the issue?
Ive noticed this as well. I've also noticed a vibration from the earpiece area while talking on the phone. The top of the phone resonates if I thump it. :-/

No, I've just learned to live with it, I would like to RMA it, but I certainly don't want to PAY to RMA it, which I'm guessing would be the end result. I'm fairly sure it has to do with the OIS, because my camera seems MUCH more sensitive to movement when taking pics now. I wish I had another G2 available to take some comparison photos with to try and verify it
Mine does it. (D802, not Verizon)
Looked in the mirror, was the camera shaking (not much)
Guess it's because it's loose when not in use. It can move afterall since this phone has physical camera stabilization.
Even my expensive Nikon says this rattling noise. Tbh I see no problem.

The Moto G "rattle"

Got one today and if you give it a little shake it rattles like a childs toy
Also no 3 pin plug or earphones in the box just a usb cable
The rattle is amazing though :good:
Mine did rattle very bad too ending up sticking a thin bit of paper between the power button and the case. Rattle is no more quick temp solution really.
That doesn't sound good

Google it? just kidding, rattle is basically when you shake some object and you can hear the pieces inside of it bouncing and making noise likes a kid's toy.

I thought the handset was defective and something inside was defective and rattling about
However , it is just the power and volume rocker buttons what rattle when you shake the phone.
Very peculiar when i first heard it but for the price i paid £99 its not really a problem . Keeps my young baby occupied aswell

Funny thing is that I could hear when tapping on the screen. Annoying!
I've just bought mine "Colors 16GB Dual sin addition" and hearing all of this reports from you guys makes me concern and kind of scary either.
Will my handset come with this annoyance as well? Err I hope it doesn't '-'
Probably.

I'm more concerned about the Metallring around the Camera then of the Sound the Camera does. I have this Sound too, but i dont care much about it. Some Cams are doing it.
Make a Video with the flash as light or use a Heatrate Monitor where you have to put your finger onto the cam, the Ring gets really Hot after a very short Time...even the Ledflash does.
No rattle here on new tesco 16gb moto g
This is just due to production tolerances on the buttons and body. If they only accepted builds which didn't rattle a little, the price would go up. You could most definitely fix it with a little bit of paper if you want. I'd rather have a percentage of them rattle than be too tight and have button problems.
Mine does rattle a bit on the buttons, but not a huge deal. Thinking of getting the motorola grip shell that covers the buttons, maybe it gets better.
Anyway, what is annoying me a bit is the camera on/off sound. Its noticeable when you enter the camera app and even louder whem exiting. I have a friend with a moto g too and it does the same. Is it general?

I've had the chance to use three different Moto G phones and the power button rattles somewhat in all. They all also exhibit the weird clicking noise when turning the camera on/off.

[Q] Galaxy Note 3 'Vibrates' When Tapped?

Hey fellow enthusiasts, I just realised that whenever I tapped on my phone, for example when I tap on the back of my phone, it kinda vibrates. anyone facing this issue?

There is a haptic feed back when you press softkeys. you might be pushing them.

When you mean vibration. Do you mean in your pocket? If you get the vibration/boom feeling then that the vibrating motor. Hope this helps.

hey guys, its not the haptic feedback. its like it somehow 'vibrates' when I tapped it on the back of my phone.
It hasn't occured to you that it might be something to do with this at all?

it doesn't really vibrate but it kinda feels like its moving when tapped with your nails.
Yeah I have the same feeling, like its on "haptic Vibro" but thats not enabled, yet still feels like a slighter Vibrate when hitting some keys?
I think I know what he means...
Its not a feedback from the vibrator at all -- I sometimes tap on my Note when I'm listening to music, like I'm playing a drum solo with my fingers
There is a faint vibration when I do that.
I always assumed it was just one of the sensors vibrating in response to my enthusiastic taps. Who knows, the shock sensor, the vibrator itself?
Anyway, I don't think its anything wrong or broken.
I don't think there is a problem... it happened with my note 2, but always worked well and flawlessly
I get it occasionally and gave up with it.

Hi!
A lady friend of mine has this problem on a GSIII.
She broke her screen and since i had a GSIII with dead mainboard i moved her mainboard to the other phone. Main camera & all.
The phone now works perfectly but has accuired the "vibrate when tapping" issue.
Personally i´d say that the vibrating camera module is a solid bet. Production tolerances might be a little on the loose side in the new camera/screenframe combo and there is a short unsupported flex cable from main board to camera module.
If i understand this particular issue correctly you dropped your phone a while back. This just might have knocked the camera module a bit around so it now sits a smidgeon more loosely in the camera bay.
If it really bothers you, a solution could be to disassemble your phone and try thightening the tolerances in the camera mount by adding small pieces of e.g. sticky tape on sides or bottom. If nothing else you´d be able to confirm or discard the camera module as the "culprit".
Personally though i wouldn´t worry about it, as long as everything hums along nicely with this particular handset.

hello! thanks for your long reply, this happened before I dropped my device, so I reckon it isn't because of the drop! it works flawlessly, but do you think I should take it over to Samsung? or is it not an issue?

About the drop - oh yeah, you stated that earlier, my bad.
I´d leave it alone.
If the phone is still under warranty you could try taking it to a service center but then you´ll have to demonstrate there is an issue.
As everything works as it should that might be easier said than done.
