Can't Get Flash To Work On 4.2 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After many hours of reading posts, installing different roms, installing all the flash apk's floating around the forums and trying every available browser, I decided to post here. I have not been able to get flash player to work at all with 4.2 on any custom rom. Every browser I have tried has crashed. I have been at this game for several years, so I have jumped through all the hoops, fixing permissions, fresh installs, etc... My question is, has anybody else had this experience? I am not really looking for testimonials of it working for people right out of the gate, because obviously it is by the lack of postings on this issue. If you fall into the category of struggling with flash on 4.2 and found a combination that finally works, please pass that info on. Thanks and have a great day.

Flash on 4.2
I don't know about on a custom ROM, but this browser plays flash on stock 4.2 with a custom kernel
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/52089051/HoloWeb.apk
Worked out of the box for me.

Hi OP,
I am facing exactly the same problem as you. Mine is a Nexus 7 3g model running on android 4.2 which I got yesterday. I have also try installing every possible flash apk that i can find...tried on alot of browser. Firefox beta, boat browser, dolphin version 8 to 9, holu as recommended by the post above. None can get to work. Its either the browser crash or some can't even display any flash plugin.
Did Google did any modifications to 4.2 that prevent flash from working?? If anybody has solve the problem please share your solution. I am also not a newbie to rooting and custom Roms as my mobile is galaxy s2 and is rooted with custom ROM. Just that I tot nexus 7 can install flash without Going through that. By as the op indicates, even that did not help him.
Thanks for any help in advance!!

Thanks for the reply. I was really not wanting to go the stock route unless necessary. I will tuck the download away and use if need be. Thanks for the response.

Flash is working but only for really small videos.
When it comes to bigger videos or apps it freezes the browser.(Both with Custom and normal kernel)

Thanks for the reply. I only tried it on several websites that had web streams that I visit frequently. Good to know that there may be issues across the board.

not an issue at all with flash, works great. android aosp browser, rasbean jelly ROM, trinity kernel.

I tried that combination, didn't experiment with any other kernel but the one built into the rom. I don't know, hard to imagine it being a hardware issue with my device.

do you use any ad blocking apps? try adfree(play store free), itll stop a lot of those flash ads that give flash a hard time. what browser are you using?

Use the AOSP stock browser mainly, but tried boat, xscope and others that I have had success with on 4.1.2. I will try adfree with a fresh install and see what happens. Thanks.

Same problem here. It's working with some flash but definitely not all. Even the one on adobe website that checking whether flash is installed make browser crashed. ><
Hope to find solution too.

If you have flash can you watch hulu without a plus subscription?

Well, only solution I've found for now.
Use Firefox for android. It's only browser I've found working with almost all flash.
If you'd still prefer other browser as default, just switch off flash/plugin option in that browser to "on demand" (not always).
Then download Flashify from playstore, it helps share link to other browser with ease.
I use AOSP as my default browser, when I browse to a page with flash and I want to see, just share it to Firefox via Flashify.
That's my solution for now, hope this help.

Hi guys,
Seems like there is a mixture of success and failure of getting flash working on Android 4.2.
Care to share what device you are using be it success or failure?
I still can't get mine to work.
Nexus 7 (3G Model)
Stock condition: Andriod 4.2
I even come across a thread where after he did a factory reset the flash got working. I did my factory reset...still no luck.

Well, I'll share my detail.
Nexus 7 wifi model 32GB
Stock JB 4.2 Rooted
Flash player 11.1.115.27 (Try other version - same result)
Flash working on Firefox for android only, no other browsers.
Should I try factory reset then ?

I have it on my 32GB Wi-Fi. 4.2
Used the info from here (I take no credit for this) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774336

Sorry, flash was too choppy for me with Firefox on 4.2. I reverted back to 4.1.2 until things get ironed out with possible updates or a solid solution.

I use Dolphin Browser HD 8.5.1 and Flash 11.1.115.17 and get no problems other than full screen not working.
Another one of these...
Boat browser + latest Flash *.apk (here on xda). No problems at all, even full screen works properly.
Or Firefox + flash 11.1.115.17.

Thanks, was worried because on the sgn didnt have this issue with an older version of flash and on the nexus 7 it didnt work. Also, when I went into playstore to get the adobe flash it said was compatible with my device which sucked.
1. Flash: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html (scroll down to Flash for Android 4.0)
2. Browser:
Firefox: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwyLDEsIm9yZy5tb3ppbGxhLmZpcmVmb3giXQ..

Boat doesn't work for me with .17 Flash. I get the blue cube symbol as well so I'm sticking with Firefox which plays 90% of the videos I've tried at least.
I must have something wrong in the settings for the Boat Browser is all I can think of.
When I go to the Flash Application Settings the only choices there are Peer Networking or Local Storage. Whatever the heck I'm suppose to choose outta the two there baffled me so I just left it on local storage and it doesn't let me go any further than that but at least Firefox works set that way.
Never mind. I didn't have .17 after all.
Got 11.1.115.17 for ICS from the Adobe dev site and both Boat and Firefox beta play Amazon Prime video with sound full screen now.
Guess I don't need to sell my N7 and get a Fire HD after all.
I am having the same problem with Boat and the last couple of versions of Dolphin will not let you enable Flash.
I tried Firefox and can get the video but no sound.
I am using the latest Flash apk from the Adobe dev site, do I need to use the modified apk from xda instead?
Where can I get an older version of the Dolphin apk, before they blocked Flash?

I installed the newest/last flash apk and load whatever sites in firefox that require flash I've found it to work the best so far.
A few sites I visit still refuse to move over to html5 and a few want you to purchase their app/subscribe to the site for mobile. This works as a good enough solution in the meantime.
Backup the apk from my Bionic still on 4.0.4, upload to Drive, install on N10. Then I use Firefox when need to watch flash vids.

I have other computers for that.
This is how you get it to work. You just need a browser that supports flash. I use Boat Browser whenever I load a site with Flash: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gunFYgj-au8
there are so many ways to get flash working on nexus 10...boat, ocean browsers r good but for me Aosp browser is the fastest and the smoothest... Never had any problems with Aosp... just use search to get Aosp browser working on nexus 10 stock rom... all AosP roms comes with Aosp. browser hope it helps.
I did nothing.. Never needed flash on my mobile devices.. Ever

You guys clearly don't want as much porn as I do.
AOSP browser with the latest flash apk (available from the "archived versions" section of the adobe flash website) is my solution. :good:
Puffin browser works for me well, but its 3 bucks. I didn't mind paying for it because its works great. You get a free 14 day trial
Latest version of Flash downloaded from the Adobe site, and Dolphin Browser.. I have both frozen via Titanium unless I need them.. I'm all for not using Flash, but I don't want to not be able to access a site just because it uses flash.

[Q] Flash Crashes all Web Browsers

Hi,
Rooted Nexus 7, Paranoid Android, with the Trinity Kernel.
Installed flash but every time i open a browser it crashes.
I need flash for attheraces replays
Any advice is much appreciated folks
4.1 and 4.2 do not officially support Flash Player --> crashes while trying to display Flash-based content
Solution:
1. Set the Flash content to be displayed manually by tapping on the webpage object
This can be set in following menus:
Settings - Advanced Settings - Allow plug-ins - On demand (in AOSP browser)
Settings - Content settings - Enable Flash - On demand (in Boat and Dolphin browsers)
Note - Chrome does not support Flash at all
Or
2. Stick to HTML5 only
Or
3. Use a device with Android 4.0 on board

I have that problem too. It didn't used to happen on 4.2.1 but then I tried that seeder thing before xda denounced it and then it started crashing. Even setting it as on demand will not work because once you click to open flash box it freezes. Firefox is the only browser that's hit or miss as to whether flash will work but all the others crash

the aosp android browser plays flash fine. theres a tutorial in the games/themes section about how to install it.
I downloaded and installed the Aosp browser but it appeared to be identical to the stock browser, renamed it etc. As per instructions from here. Should i delete the stock browser first?

honestly, i dont know which browser PA includes. if its the "stock" browser, then it is chrome, and doesnt support flash. they could possibly include the aosp android browser already. if they do, then it is the same. you can. is the new browser working for you with flash?

+1 (2 thumbs up) Dolphin browser was one of my favorite alternate until I discovered Boat browser, used it on rooted stock 4.1.2 and 4.2.1, stock kernel, plus franco & bricked kernel on the N7.
I used (free app) AntTeh App Manager to freeze/disable the Chrome browser on 4.2 and change Boat browser's setting to make it the default, On-demand Flash and it works 99.8% of the time so far, including Google searches. If it's still not smooth, disable the stock AOSP browser on the device, whether it's 4.1 or 4.2
For good measure, after making the changes - boot into recovery, wipe dalvik cache & restart - it doesn't hurt to clear most if not all of the saved settings.
Hi,
I have installed Boat browser and so far it seems OK, i think your right about the Trinity kernel so if the crashes continue i might check out the Motley kernel.

Yeah your right. At least for me its something that I changed that made it suddenly stop working. The only thing I do though was add that seeder apk and flash took a dump. What's really strange is like I said it'll work on Firefox sometimes and it works on puffin browser. It'll ramp up on other browsers like its gonna load but then almost like it overloads the GPU it'll freeze and crash the other browsers. What's worse is I've completely wiped formatted pushed new ROM etc and still get the same issues haha different kernel ROM combos. Nothing works but before that seeder apk it was working flawlessly

It won't matter, 4.2.2 doesn't have the native ability to use flash. There are a couple of threads floating around with people claiming different browsers will work with flash on 4.2.2, but I have only tried "Boat" browser and could not get it to work. I also remember seeing a thread that has a mod in it that that uses a different build prop and modified APK to make flash work with 4.2.2 but I haven't tried it either. You can use the search function to try to find the thread I am talking about and maybe it will help you. Good luck.

I'm telling you guys, I've tried all the browsers with flash- aosp, boat, naked browser, the only one which works consistently and absolutely flawlessly is dolphin with the latest flash from Adobe's website and dolphin jetpack installed and active. I've never encountered flash that wouldn't play properly, and it is always fully functional (unlike the next best browsers like boat and aosp, which for whatever reason seem to have difficulty using flash navigation/seek bars/play/pause, etc, which works great in dolphin). Give it a shot. You might have to do the dolphin trick to enable flash to "always on" (either by restoring a titanium setting for a previous dolphin install or by deleting a particular dolphin settings file in your phone, I forget which, but I can look it up if anyone's curious), but I'm telling you, flash works beautifully on this phone as long as you have the proper tricks/browser.
Now, as far as Google recognizing flash is still essential, I completely agree. Until the web is flushed of all things flash, it is asinine to argue that since flash is not as efficient as it should be, people shouldn't use it in their websites, and we shouldn't be able to watch it. The web is full of flash, and acting like it's not there doesn't solve anything.

Nothing special:
1. I enabled Flash Player in Boat Browser Pro (Settings>Page Content Settings>Enable Flash/Plug-ins to Always ON)
2. Installed the latest Adobe Flash Player - use the suggested link/download.
Also, there seems to be a way to enable Flash support in the stock browser; I haven't tried it yet (although I plan on) but you can give it a try and let us know.
I don't know how you're using Flash with Dolphin. In the app itself it says that Dolphin no longer supports Flash on Android 4.1+.
It works with Firefox.

That is exactly what I have done and it acts like the flash player wants to start playing content, but just shows a blank screen and a few seconds later force closes boat browser. The only difference I can tell is that I am using the free version of boat browser but the flash plugin "always on" option is still there? I already know about the other ASOP option, but I think I might try Dolphin browser to see if it will work. So I am glad it is working for you, but I don't think it works for all.
**EDIT**
I didn't try Dolphin browser...too much crap involved. But I did install Firefox with the latest Android Flash APK and it is working for me just fine. If there won't be any ROMs with flash baked in (once the bootloader is unlocked) I will probably go with the ASOP option, but Firefox will do for now.

There are a variety of ways to get flash working on the latest version of Dolphin. The easiest is to find version 8.5.1 circulating on the web, install it, set the flash to "on demand" or "always on," do a titanium backup, then update to the latest version of dolphin, and then do a titanium restore of just the dolphin app data (not the app itself). This will restore the setting for flash to either "on demand" or "always on," depending on which you had set it to in 8.5.1. Besides this, there are a bunch of other methods including deleting a particular setting file, which will automatically enable flash. They are described here:

But as I said, flash only works perfectly on Dolphin if you also install the Dolphin Jetpack from the Play store. If you don't, it semi works (similar to the way it "works" with boat... some files play fine, some stall, some crash, and most won't show the seek bar/pause/play during playback). With Jetpack installed and activated, flash plays just like it does on my computer.

Thank You so much. Dolphin 9.4.1 with flash enabled and Jetpack works perfectly. Flash works and live websites work now and no more crashes. I used to get crashes with any browser and any flash player version.
Flash works fine with Firefox, maxthon, default, opera. Except chrome

I was getting horribly slow page loading using Firefox w/flash. I started using Tint Browser and it works great w/flash. Give it a try if you're having problems w/ other browsers.

The version of opera is very old I had it in my Dropbox titanium backup. And the default browser is from the sg4

Just use the flashfox browser app from the market. Flash fox has it's own dedicated flash player.

Currently flashfox (and several other combo's) do not work with my 4.4 install, running as secondary on multirom, 4.3 = primary.
hopefully someone will resolve 4.4 issue in the near future.....

That's just odd. I still have yet to encounter an issue with it. I'll keep looking then.

if you’ve got a previous version of flash player installed on your device, you’ll need to uninstall it . Now follow theses steps to install flash manually on android 4.4 kitkit
Download Dolphin Jetpack from the Google Play Store. Dolphin Browser & Dolphin Jetpack
Next download the Flash Player which is a hacked version of Flash. Yo can find Hacked version here
Go to Settings > Securities > Unknown resources. This will let you install apks outside the Google Play i.e. unknown installations.
Make sure to first install any previous version of Flash before installing the hacked Flash Player for the compatibility.
In Dolphin Browser, go to Menu > Settings > Web Content > Flash Player to enable the flash setting in the browser.
I've done everything you've said, but flash still doesn't work when I'm trying to watch live broadcasts from vapeon TV. I keep getting a message that says I need to install flash player. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Apparently I didn't do everything you said! Lol. I didn't turn on the flash player in the Dolphin browser. Now everything works fine since I've turned it on. Thanks for the help!
