Replaced My 7.7 With a Nexus 10 - Galaxy Tab 7.7 General

I've replaced my excellant 7.7 with the excellant Nexus 10 which is the only Android tablet which is better for my needs than the 7.7 mainly because of the much better screen resolution.
If Samsung had updated the 7.7 with a similar screen resolution and added s-pen support then I would have bought another 7.7 for it is more portable.
However, with no sign of Samsung about to make the changes that I need then I decided to get the Nexus 10 in case the changes never appear.
I would just like to thank all on this forum for the support which helped me get the most from my 7.7.

The 7.7 is for me without doubt the best tablet ever made. I love mine and will never give it up. The form factor/ design is beautiful. With ics this baby is very useable and quick. It's a shame it never had the market it truly deserved.
I have since bought a note 10.1 - only for the wacom tech. Must be honest, i don't like the design of the note. Also the screen res while adequate is nothing to write home about. Overall, It just doesn't feel as "premium" as the 7.7.
The jellybean update on 10.1 has provided a killer feature - multiview.
I want too bothered with no jb for 7.7.. But nowthat i have used multiview i am really craving it for the darling 7.7.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Well send a big Thank you to Apple for killing the sales of the 7.7 worldwide, making it too expensive for Samsung to develop JB for it.
Lets just hope that CM can pick up the exynos sources one day.

If it comes out for the note hopefully it will come out for the 7.7, shouldn't be much work for them.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Successor spotted in Pre-WMC Ad

Just though i'd let you all know the galaxy tab successor was just spotted in a pre-wmc add, looks like its 4.0 and a stylus built in! Can't wait to see this develop!
(Can't post link because of stupid XDA rules, but its on slashgear)

Now, Samsung. Update my 7.7 to ICS and I will love you again.

Thats the samsung galaxy tab 2, which has apparently the same specs as our galaxy tab 10.1 (if not lower). Wait for the galaxy note 10.1 for much higher specs, hi res screen etc
Hopefully this will make for an easy port to our device!
I really dont expect samsung to give our tabs ICS soon especially since this newer version has the similar hardware to the original tab 10.1.
I feel like samsung would not want to release ICS for our tabs so they can sell more of the newer version, but maybe I am just a pessimist.

I just dont understand why cant Samsung just update our tab 10.1 to ICS and then lower the price and sell it as low end model. Then release note 10.1 as a successor with higher specs.
99% of us are not going to upgrade to tab 2 anyways. So whats the incentive for releasing a new model with exactly same specs, but with ICS ?

I hope the real 10.1² has a high res display... 1080p please!
Although I would also take the front facing speakers on the next go around.
Then I can grandfather my 10.1 to my girl who doesn't care about such things.

Well it seems like it will have the front facing speakers. I find them ugly though. Ill hope the side speakers come to Canada as they don't have to work around any Apple lawsuits here.

Agree them front speakers look UGLY...
Somehow, in spite of having the same specs, it's gotten thicker (9.7mm vs 8.6mm) and heavier (588g vs. 565g). It also now supports Glonass for GPS and has a MicroSD slot. I wonder if the added bulk is due to moving to a cheaper to build design.
I'm sure all the lawsuits Samsung has been dealing with brought all this about... Also they have to support this tab for 18months per Google rules so we WILL see ICS

Samsung Unpacked 2012

Can't say for sure where to post this, but in case anyones forgotten, Samsung Unpacked 2012 is later today. We know that they are likely to announce the SGS2 successor and perhaps another mystery phone. Fingers crossed for ICS on the Note?
Link to the Unpacked app on the Play store; you can watch the announcement live in the app once it happens.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsungmobile.unpacked2012_1
Update; looks like they are going to stream it on Facebook...

Here will be stream too: http://apsoid.ru/show/s3.htm
A comparison between the S2, the SGnex and the S3 : http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/galaxy-s-iii-whats-changed/
Quite happy I've didn't wait for it and took the Note instead, don't really care about quad-core, as it seems (almost) the only benefit of the S3.
I'm really underwhelmed and disappointed by the SGS3 announcement as this is our first glimpse of what may power the Note successor.
I'm not so much disappointed with the chipset as I am with the pentile screen - I guess the rumors of upgrading to a screen in between pentile and traditional RGB subpixel arrangement were nothing but fluff.
I really am starting to think that I will just skip the Note2 and head straight for the Note3.
Ha, Ha. Samsung is done. A 4.8inch? Two large for a phone. I believe 4" to 4.5" is the best. If you want a phone and tablet, go to note. iPhone 5 will be a winner.
YES! Looks like i'm keeping my baby! I can finally stress down and wait till september/october for the Note 2 aka The Best One.

It already won't receive any of those new features SGS3 will.

Note will get ICS update probably 23 june. SGS3 much worse than Note.
hehe i will keep my note as well
i mean the s3 is not a bad phone.
but its still hasnt 5.3" and an s-pen^^
i greatly dislike the physical buttons of the s3. i'd be interested in it, but i wanna get rid of the physical buttons the next phone i buy.
like the other guy said in the sgs3 forum we just got 'Iphone 4S'd by Samsung. how could they say inspired by nature? the phone looks plasticky and Tw launcher is simply FUGLY, If they do the same to the note 2.
I just finished watching it. I think it was a good event. The Galaxy S III is really attractive!! Samsung is really a big threat to apple now.

As they currently sell the most smartphones in the world, I think the threat is already there. The SIII isn't going to dent those sales anytime soon. I think it looks smart, especially the blue version.
Have to agree with a number of comments. My Note will definitely not be going anywhere. I got my hopes up near the end when they said 'one more surprise' but alas...
I was surprised to see the hardware buttons in place. I thought ICS and the GNex would have pushed Samsung away from it. Hardware and software seem fine, but barring the social stuff (which I'm personally not really interested in) the camera and some of the awareness functions like staying awake and smart notifications seem interesting and I don't think there is a good reason those functions shouldn't be on the Note.
Just remembered one more cool thing they need to port to the Note, the scrolling toggles in the drop down notifications. And quite a funny voice 'test' from Android Central below.

Samsung will saturate the market with sgs3, they will sell a large quantity(expect cheap sgs3 within 3 months of release) but they will loose the brand value, similar to how htc host its foot on android(remember they were the largest manufacturer of android). the only thing they have going for them is their exclusive access to superamoled, but i think with rendering issues in samoled (needless to say plasticky body) my next device is unlikely to be a Samsung.
I think the camera app functionalities sound great and all the S voice thing too even if it's a "Samsung's Siri"
What's the chance that the Galaxy Note ICS official update will include these features?
If not, what's the chance of port?

Need advice... should I buy?

Hi, I'm looking from advice from existing Galaxy Tab 10.1 users.
I am a self employed web designer and am looking for a tablet that I can use as a mobile portfolio and for demos of sites under development, etc.
My main requirements are... light, thin + decent 10" screen and ideally something that doesn't feel too cheap so when I hand it to clients it feels OK.
I can get a (reconditioned) Galaxy Tab 10.1 on eBay UK for £190 so it strikes me as a good deal.
Would a Galaxy Tab 10.1 suit my purpose? Is the ICS build OK? Are there any gotchas? As I said it will really be used fairly infrequently. I have an Android phone (Moto RAZR) that I can tether to the tablet for 3G data.
Any advice or thoughts are very welcome!
aesthetically speaking, the G-tab 10.1 is a very nice device. the new ICS update has been working very nice also.
however, the "gotcha" is that it's last year's hardware (dual core Tegra2). Getting one now really puts you behind the curve compared to tablets with current hardware. Personally, I wouldn't get anything less than a quad-core cpu.
The Asus transformer TF300t is the best deal on a 10" tablet right now (quad-core Tegra3, and it just got the Jelly Bean update), but it's not quite as nice feeling as the original G-tab 10.1, and it's still probably a bit more expensive than 190 english pounds

Nothing he is wanting to use the tablet for would need anywhere near 4 cores. Nothing we have available to us right now fully utilizes 4 cores. ICS is the first firmware to even fully utilize 2 cores. By the time we need quad core tablets, the current quad core tablets will be old and outdated anyways. I say, for what you need it for, the gtab will be just fine.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Pulled the trigger on one this morning. :good: As Towie said, the Tab will mainly be used for web browsing a single site at a time during meetings and a bit of Evernote / gmail / etc.
If it proves useful I'll probably upgrade to a quad-core (or whatever the state of the art is) next year.
Add a nice oem Samsung leather pouch and the ics update and you're set. Looks professional and the browser is much better (displays non-mobile optimized sites very well.) Good luck with your business.

I actually picked one up for $11 US at an electronics chain store that was dropping all Tab accessories. HHGregg is the chain. I was shocked at the quality when I opened the package. Much better than the OEM case that allows it to stand and has the magnetic flap. That thing can't even tolerate a finger nail swiping it and it was $50.

SGT 10.1 will not allow you to make gsm calls, while pretty much any other Samsung tablet with 3G will let you.

The Galaxy tab 10.1 3g can make calls. I made a few today. Well, the hack was only made available so that's why most users wouldn't know about it.
Btw, I upgraded (downgraded) Sgt 2 10.1 a month ago. It was horrendous. Screen was nowhere near as good and I couldn't get a HDMI adapter for it and battery was crap. Ended up keeping the original and selling the tab 2.

10.1 vs note 10.1

Just wondering if it was worth upgrading my samsung galaxay 10.1 to the note 10.1 special after i can finally make voice calls from it. As am just waiting on a phone call to say when the 3g version is coming in stock
Quad core processor
2GB of RAM
Getting Jelly Bean
If you have the money, I wouldn't see a reason not to upgrade.
Just hope Samsung doesn't give up support for it or take forever to provide further upgrades as has happened with the Tab.

Ding Ding Ding. Exactly. They did it with the OG GT then the GT 10.1. They've given no reason to make us think support will be any better on the Note 10.1.

I do not like the way Note 10.1 looks to be honest. I had my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with me when I stopped by BestBuy and compare them side by side, tell you the truth, my a year old Galaxy Tab 10.1 still better looking then newest Tab Note 10.1!!
but as far as hardware specs goes, of course Note 10.1..if only I can afford it now (money gone to my newest toy Nexus 7!)
Just a question: how are you going to upgrade your tablet? Is it a kind of an offer?
For me, I am an owner of both Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Note 10.1. For design, the Tab 10.1 is thinner, lighter, and has more solid feeling.
But I think it is worth to get the Note 10.1 because it is far much better in terms of:
- Performance: Note 10.1 is amazingly faster, has much better response to touch, especially that the note has Quad Core processor with 2 GB of RAM vs Dual Core processor and 1 GB of RAM on the Tab 10.1.
- WACOM technology: You are now using a tablet and a notebook, and you will no more need a paper an a pen. Whereas the Tab 10.1 only uses the standard stylus with response issues.
- Brighter display on the Note 10.1.
- You can have phone calls and send SMS and MMS using the Note 10.1, but not the Tab 10.1.
- Multi-Screen multi-tasking is amazing.
In short, yes it worth the upgrade if you are looking for better performance and a replacement for papers and pens, and especially worth it if you are having this device for learning and education. Galaxy Tab 10.1 has performance issues, and it has lags and not very fluid like in other tablets.

It is perfectly designed. I love the "S Note" app very much. It is definitely of high performance. No lags what so ever.
BTW, there are some software additions to Note 10.1 in ICS that are not present in the ICS of Tab 10.1. For example, the "Remote Controls" of finding out a lost Note 10.1 is not available for Tab 10.1 - the so called SamsungDive. Also, lock screen options like putting "Stock" information or "News", or weather on the lock screen is not present in the Tab 10.1.
And that's plus more of them

Galaxy Tab 10.1 4G LTE, which I have, is unable of doing phone calls or sending simple SMS or MMS, in spite of the fact that I got ICS 4.0.4 on it!!
In short, seems like Samsung is not supporting their old Galaxy Tab 10.1 like it should be.
But you can do this with the 3G Note 10.1

Hey man! I did not know this was a signature, I couldn't guess it is kind of kidding, so I am sorry
BTW, the Note 10.1 is a very amazing product.
For whom asked about the Note 10.1 applications, I have extracted system.img file, and I will start by posting some familiar apps, but I am NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHETHER THEY ARE NOT WORKING OR IF THE CAUSED HARM TO YOUR TAB
Since the apps are large, I will post them gradually by posting external links.
Samsung quality and displays are unmatched..in all of their product line.
The S-pen is so freaky cool.and the notes multi tasking windows is a huge productive plus.
If you want a notebook or net book substitute the note may do it for you.
Some one posted it matters on what you want to do with it and what your budget commands.
That is the answer.

You know what its one of those things I don't use the 3g much but bet you when I haven't got it I will miss it or suddenly need it
Well had it for a few days now and its a great tab feels a bit heavy but its still a great tab the only downfall is without the 3g you suddenly realize how much you do use is and miss it so because of that am going to have to send it back and keep my galaxy 10.1 till I can get the 3g note. If anyone is coming from a wifi tab to this will be very pleased but if anyone is coming from a 3g tab then wait and try and get the 3g version

Neither one of them.
About the iPad, I don't even want to talk about it or any other iBullshett from Crapple. If you are one of the Apple fanboys, by all means please buy it and get out of here.
And now the Galaxy Tab. I have one and I wouldn't recommend anyone else to buy it. Talk about specs, Galaxy Tab isn't the best tablet out there, in fact it only has a dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM and very poor screen resolution which lead to poor performances and speed.
But all that still doesn't annoy me as much as Samsung's lack of proper support for 3rd party development. ICS has been release to the public almost a year ago and here we are still desperately waiting. Sure you can flash some custom ROMs to have a taste of it, but thing is, none of those ROMs has a fully functional camera due to the lack of the required driver which Samsung doesn't want to release. The same thing is happening to the Galaxy S3 now, it might take years before S3 users can get the Project Butter (which has already been launched) to their phone. But this is kinda offtopic so I don't want to talk much about it. All I want to say is: due to Samsung's crappy support, stay away from its products.
What I'd recommend you for now is Google's Nexus 7. It's Google's very own tablet so you can be sure that you'll always be up to date.
I'll advice you to go with ipad 3.
I've my tab and my friend has ipad.
Comparing both.... Ipad is way better than 10.1
Incase you want android, go for nexus 7,note 10.1, or Asus infinity pad

thanks my friends
I don't know what some of these guys are talking about but my tab 10.1 works great for me, even being almost 2 year old technology. I love this tab almost as much as my s3, almost
Anyway, here's a video breakdown of the 2 side by side to give you an idea of what you're looking at:

In my opinion, iPads are toys. Great for entertainment but if you want something that is close to a lap or desktop replacement get a Tab. Ignore Browy. The Tab 10.1 does NOT have "very poor resolution" or performance. I updated to ICS and it's plenty speedy, and there are lots of custom ROMs and tweeks to enhance it even more. something iPads will never have.
Listen to Kishorsidu and Browy. I agree with what they say. Don't buy a Galaxy Tab 10.1 it's too old. It was a good tablet when it was first released, but technology has moved on, and there are much better devices out there whether you want Android or Apple.
If you ask it this way, ipad 3, for sure! 10.1 is ****ing slow and old, and fw support is weak(official and xda)
I know there are android fanboys around that will argue against any apple product no matter what. I find this stupid and fanboyant!
I've been through Symbian, Symbian UIQ, windows mobile 5, 6, 6.5 , iOS, android, dos3.3- dos6, windows 3.11, NT, 95, 98, XP, 7, beos, os/2, all sorts of linuxes starting with slackware 3.2.
What you learn in the end is: there is no best, superior super duper ultra os. It all depends on your needs, what you expect and like!
So, go to the store and compare, read reviews and decide.
Also note, android like any linux product is a beta( even the "stable" versions). Its for people that like fiddling with stuff. This is not a bad thing! I like doing this from time to time.
If, on the other hand, you need something that just works, without being constantly kicked, pushed, rushed and fixed you might like the ipad. I dont say that iOS has no flaws and bugs, what I say is that in general, the things that apple promised, work.
Also, note that all apple devices get at least 3 years of official updates. Most android devices get forgotten in oblivion by their makers in about an year and your only hope is xda!
P.S. This is not anti-android, anti xda post! I respect all xda devs for what they are doing and I like android as a concept! I'm just expressing my view on the current situation!
regards
samsung galaxy tab 10.1 is still good unlike everyone says. you just have to make sure you don't screw with it too much installing custom roms and whatnot. i have had mine for a year and it's still amazing fast considering the fact that it's loaded with a pile of apps. don't exclude it from your choices.

this rom is amazing. get it.
The right device depends largely on what you want to do with it, and whether you're invested in either ecosystem. If you've already got a library of music/books/movies, etc. via iTunes, then the iPad is the choice. The same is true if you're invested in Google's ecosystem.
However, in terms of Android tablets, I wouldn't recommend the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (unless you're on a tight budget, because one can be had fairly cheaply)...and I say that as someone who owns one. Its not that I dislike it. On the contrary, it really does everything I need it to do. The problem is there are several newer, better tablets out now.
Probably the top 3 I'd consider (not in any order):
ASUS Transformer - Quad core Tegra 3, 1920 x 1200 resolution
Nexus 10 - 1.7 GHz Exynos, 2560 x 1600 resolution, Google reference device will be among the 1st to get updates
Galaxy Note 10.1 - S-Pen functionality is awesome and it has some other great features
You may also want to consider a MS Surface or other Windows 8 tablet.
