[Q] Unknown Device in Windows when CWM recovery is loaded - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I reboot my device into CWM recovery (fastboot boot method, didn't flash it) my phone isn't recognized in Windows. In Device Manager it says 'Full JellyBean on Mako' but I am unable to do things like mount the sdcard or adb sideload. I tried to point the device to the google usb drivers but they weren't recognized. MTP and ADB work great within Android and Fastboot works in the Bootloader. Anyone know what I need to do to get the device recognized in Windows within CWM recovery? Is it simply the fact that I am booting from the image rather than flashing it?

71 views and no one has any ideas...this isn't good lol.

LOL it's naver good when no one will even take a guess at it. It may be do it you booting from an Image, but I still think it may be a driver problem. With using the SDK it's some times hit and miss on getting the drivers install right. If it was me I would install mskip's great little toolkit. In it one of the first things it list is install drivers. That way you have something to check with other then the SDK. and you just may like the kit better. It's for windows only but looking at the screen shoot it looks like you are on vista or win 7 so no problems their.
Sorry I could not be of more help, I have the SDK running in linux yet I have moved to mskip's toolkit it does all I need it to do and more. here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688

Thank you, sir. I will give this a shot and see what happens!

Used the toolkit to remove the Google drivers and then installed the drivers provided with the toolkit and everything is working now! When in CWM, the phone now shows up as Google Galaxy Nexus instead of Nexus 4 but as far as I can tell all is well. I'd buy you a beer if I could! haha.

Glad I was able to help.

Root device? Safe?

Hi!
I have had this phone for a while now and thinking about rooting it so i can use droidwall and OC the phone. How is the easiest wat and is it safe?
Isak
i used z4root and no side-effect so far..
Ok, but if something goes wrong is it anyway to recover all data on the phone and just start up again?
i would say its always wise to do a backup before trying anything potentially dangerous..
u may read the other topic about recovery mode in this board for this..
Ok, gör det innan jag försöker roota
good luck and have fun..
worked perfect Thanks!
@Isakk1, can you please guide me how you rooted your u8800 using z4root?I got problem with the driver (huawei hsusb device)

USB driver for windows? do you see the auto mounted CD drive after plugging in? the drivers are there
Why need of drivers?
Assuming you are trying to copy z4root on your device... SD-card should mount itself when you plug usb in, just choose to mount from your phone notification are.
Moved to general.
I think this is what you're trying to do:
1. Open device manager, you will see this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then right click on the HSUSB Device choose update driver then browse my computer manually. Then browse to this:
It will then install the driver and it should show this in device manager now:
Also worthwhile would be starting cmd and running adb devices to make sure the phone is listed.
thankz a lot guys..very appreciated
i rooted my phone . but i feel it's not good idea when i use 1 week. the phone always have some issues when use, so i flash back.
Can someone upload the drivers and share the link coz I can't find the drivers on the mounted drive (it's empty) after I installed the B160 based ROM.
Drivers attached to this post
Thanks alot!
I used z4root from Applanet.net
installed easily and rooted no probs as well.

[Q] CWM flashing problem <data transfer failure> [Huawei S7 2.2]

SEE POST #3 FOR SOLUTION
I'm having an issue I can't get past..
I've got the Indonesian 2.2.2 rom on my Australian (Telstra) device (external sd, 2 cameras, resistive)
I'm using goodoane's v2.2 compatable CWM, and xaueious's easy windows flasher. The phone is rooted using superoneclick, and all drivers are installed fine. It process through all the steps until the following one with no problems.
Trying to install , but get the following error:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
As you see it says FAILED <data transfer failure <too many open files in system>>
I cannot figure out a way to get around this. Using the easy windows install script. Please help!
Downgraded to 2.1 and tried the same with 2.1 img. Exact same error. Someone please help :/
OK, so I figured it out.
The drivers weren't installing properly on either of my windows 7/intel core 2 duo systems. So, I hooked the tablet up to me Windows 2000 torrent box, and the huawei drivers installed fine.
I was able to root through that computer, but as seen above I was unable to flash CWM.
So, after more tinkering, I became dedicated to fixing the drivers on my Windows 7 computers.
I copied the driver info from my Win2000 box, and then plugged the tablet into my Win7 PC.
Instead of using the 'update driver option' by pointing the computer to a specific location (where the huawei drivers were), I selected 'have disk', and then did that.
The drivers for 'Win7&XP' were still not working, so I decided screw it, and pointed the computer to the 'Win7-AMD' drivers using the have disk option. I specified the correct INF (as seen in driver details from the Win2000 box), and to my surprise it installed correctly!
I then enabled USB debugging, and followed the exact same process; pointing my computer to the Windows 7-AMD drivers as opposed to the Win7&XP drivers, even though I have an intel CPU. It worked.
I then flashed CWM onto my Tablet with the stock 2.1 rom. I'm now upgrading to indonesian 2.2 and will flash the appropriate 2.2 version of CWM, which i'm sure will work.
Hope this helps someone out there!

[Q] Webtop without dock

Hi I am new to this forum and I'm not an expert, I really would like to use the webtop without a dock,i tried following the instructions posted here but nothing happens, I don't know what am I missing. Am I supposed to run the install file on my computer or on my phone? When I run it on my computer a black screen appears and some command and then I says to press any key and that my phone will reboot, but nothing happens. Am I supposed to do something to my phone?
I'm on att gingerbread, not rooted, I enabled debugging mode.
Thank you
You need to root and probably deodex
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium
You are probably right, but why then on Fenny's post it says no root or deodex needed??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980193
oh well look at that,
you run the script from your computer but your phone has to be connected and have all the right drivers on your computer

Can you please be a little more specific, I have the drivers for motorola media link and the phone portal, also for usb connection.
do you know what ADB is and how to use it?
No. I don't know... I just enabled the debugging mode on my phone

ok connect your phone to hyhour computer and make sure the computer knows it is connected
then run the script
good advice
If I were you I'd be VERY CAREFUL and investigate and learn all you can BEFORE doing any mods on your phone. Too many phones have been bricked (rendered useless) by running things you know little about.
I did that but the doesn't do anything, it doesn't reboot like it says on the script. I know it's connected because when I enable debugging I see the pop up screen for the internal memory and the sd card
Thanks for your concern I really appreciate it.what I like about this is that doesn't require root
Root
Hi
I also had exactly the same problem.
I wanted webtop, without really rooting my device.
It didnt work out. Also ran the script no reboot etc.
I then rooted my device, Fenny assisted me to create 2 files for the stock 2.2.2 atrix 4g (The older version of the os)
I copied them manually using root explorer, rebooted, and walla, i had the webtop working.
I still have those files.....
If you need them, PM me, its worth a try...

Big problem (I think)

I've tried rooting my Nexus 7 and not sure what's gone wrong.

This is what happens when I load CWM.
Prior to this point what I did was unlock the bootloader and then process to flash CWM, then load CWM and flash SuperSU from sdcard but it's gone a bit wrong.
Anybody got an ides what the hell I've done wrong?

Hi, UrbanDesigns...
Are you sure you have the correct version of CWM installed on your Nexus 7 ?
The references in your screenshot to an SD Card are a bit odd, given the Nexus 7 doesn't have an SD Card.
(...and the most recent version for Nexus 7 of CWM is 6.0.3.6... your screenshot shows your version to be 6.0.2.3).
Download the correct CWM recovery image from here for either your 'tilapia' (3G & WiFi) Nexus 7 or your 'grouper' (WiFi only) Nexus 7... whichever one you have.
And fastboot flash it with...
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
...where recovery.img is the actual name of your recovery image file. Personally, I just think it's easier to rename it to recovery.img, and then flash it. Less scope for typos at the command prompt.
Hope this helps... good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.
I was following this.
For some reason windows says it does not recognize my device now, it says "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"
I was following this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2150661
So I assume everything was correct.
The only difference is I used Minimal ADB and Fastboot
The tablet is fully functioning now but won't get recognized by my PC, it's listed as "Unknown Device" under "Other Devices"
When I try to manually select where the driver folder is it instantly fails and says windows was unable to install your unknown device

Failed to install Aroma file manager on Samsung S5

Hello. This is my first post on this forum so please correct me should i post this in the wrong cathegory or use wrong tags etc
I followed the straight-forward guide i find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108
Using the recovery mode on a Samsung S5 i have the option to "Apply update from external storage" and i find the .zip file under this tab and if i try to apply the update i get the following message:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I've been trying this three times but i get the same error. I tried to search if other experienced the same problems but i found no similar threads.
Fyi this is on a non-rooted S5. It belonged to my grandmother which recently passed away and we are stuck trying to retrieve the photos on the device and this seemed like the best way. If there is any other way to retrieve these photos from a S5 with a pattern lock i will gladly accept any suggestions USB Debugging is obviously turned off on this phone -_-
Thank you!
You need root, a custom recovery and a terminal emulator as it seems to do this. Btw i`am sorry for your grandmother. Best is to flash a custom recovery with Odin, flash the latest superSU.zip in recovery . Reboot and install a terminal emulator from Play and follow the guide. Turn on usb debugging too.
