Get Maximum Battery Out of Stock JellyBean ROM (plus fix Media draining much battery) - Galaxy S II General

Personally have been experiencing HUGE challenges regarding battery life of JB. and i have searched and searched, complained and complained in many xda threads. But in the end, i think this method is the best I figured out and it works pretty well!
I discovered the main cause of battery drain on JB is the 'Media Scanner'. I dont know exactly what the issue is, but it DRAINS your battery! I thought it was a corrupt file in my phone that was causing Media scanner to get stuck and scan for loong periods instead of 2 - 3 minutes which it should take regularly. (btw media scanner is launched every time you restart your mobo or make changes to your media files as far as i know). I formatted both my Internal and External SDs but it still didnt help. Now use the following Steps below to solve these issues.
1. Download Media scanner ROOT.
This app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascannerroot&hl=en
2. Download Media scanner also
This one - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
3. Always set 'Power saving' option on phone on. I can assure you that you'll hardly notice the difference in performance when you turn on power saving.
Having said that, if you want more brightness, you can increase from toggle or just tick auto by the side of brightness level settings right there in your notification bar.
Also, if you need to game or use heavy app that require alot of system resources, just turn off power saving.(Because power saving slows down your processors Maximum state from 1200MHz or 1.2GHz to 800MHz.)
How to use the apps mentioned in numbers 1 and 2.
First one is to stop it (Media scanner) from ever scanning. So open that one with ROOT at the end of the name (Grant SU prompt), then hit disable media scanner button wait for it to work. Just one or two seconds.
Sometimes you might open your gallery and notice a file is missing or you might not see even a single picture or vid in it.
ONLY NOW! can you open the second app dat DOESN'T contain ROOT at the end of its name.
Just open it and then hit the back button to close. thats all!
What this does if to call the media scanner you disabled earlier with first app so it can scan your SD Cards and your gallery will display your files.
You can read the application descriptions on Play store for better understanding.
If you notice that these steps still doesn't help you with your battery drain issue, try disabling Motions and Animations in debugging options too. Both in settings. Then test battery again and see how good it works.
IMPORTANT: You also want to change PhilZ recovery Backup format from .dup to .tar as this might be the reason why Media scanner goes crazy. How to - Reboot into recovery, select Backup and restore, then select 'Choose backup format', then hit tar. Now delete all previous backups done in .dup format and then hit 'Free Unused backup Data' or go into phone, delete the folders of the backups done in .dup and then delete evreything in blobs folder. Now do a fresh Nandroid which will now be in .tar format. ( Always Have a Nandroid backup on your phone , it can come in handy! )
REMEMBER: What works for one person, might not exactly work for everyone. We don't have 100% same hardware. . So take it easy while throwing your shots at me. I just decided to share this.
I hope this helps some solve their battery issue.
Please hit thanks if this helps you.

Attached screenshots of my test from steps in first post.
ROM! is The SWEET SMOOTH NEAT ROM LITE v4.0
Here are the details of the screenshots i attached to this post, just incase you can't go through all of them.
1. Battery at 97%.
98% (3:05:20) deep sleep after 3h:08m:49s (total time on batt3)
2. Battery at 95%
97% (5:58:26) deep sleep after 6h:07m:18s (total time on batt3)
Had major whatsapp activity in the backgroud (I always have )
3. Battery at 70% - 12:59pm
Screen time - 2h 4m 10s
4. Battery at 50% - 2:30pm
Screen time - 3h 17m 38s
5. Battery at 40% - 3:06pm
Screen time - 3h 53m 12s
6. Battery at 30% - 3:48pm
Screen time - 4h 33m 27s
7. Battery at 20% - 4:27pm
Screen time - 5h 12m 20s
8. Battery at 10% - 5:03pm
Screen time - 5h 48m 21s
9. Battery at 1% - 5:31pm
Screen time - 6h 15m 19s
Also to achieve this, i had all bloatware frozen (full list in my S2 Facebook group - Link in my signature)
Turned Off Sync, and motion (really dont know if this affected result since i guess you need to use the motion,
for it to use up your battery).
Anyways, having said all these, i had running in background, facebook messenger, whatsapp, email pushing hourly,
Instagram. Did some surfing using Opera mini from time to time, Watched Videos... and some other stuff i cant remember of course.

The fact that Power Saving does not slow down the phone like older builds is strange.
I don't even know if it works that well yet.
I mean, I used Power Saving on my friends S3 and the phone got really slow.

Its normal for your mobile to get hot using 3G. But wat you can do right now is use lowest brightness possible. And flashing a different modem can solve. Did in ICS.

Yup, when i first tried my friend S3 i was amazed at how slow it got if you turned on this option, doesn't happen in s2 JB which is strange, however i will try this 3 things to see if battery life does increase.

I don't know why you guys have this media scanner problem. My battery life with LSJ (NeatROM Lite) is the best I have ever seen on SGS2, (best screen-on time + call time, and it sleeps like a baby) and media scanner isn't showing in BBS, at least not frequently. Maybe you all are using .dup format for CWM backups? It's the default on Philz kernel (at least it was), but I changed that in recovery options to .tar.

Pilgrim bro, you have a very good point there bro. Maybe i should look into this and change my recovery option to tar also... But anyways, the steps in the first post fixes the issue.

Is it possible to use voltage control app to limit max processor signal to 800mhz, and save more battery?

Not sure what people are complaining about?
I've stripped alot, and i mean alot of APK's from the system folder. Had around 6 hours screen time, and around 1 day 3 hours uptime on first cycle.
No wakelocks, nothing. Best ROM i've used in a long time!

After disabling media scanner my music player and video player doesnt show any files.. and the ringtones are set to default samsung tones instead of what i hav set..
any solution for that ???/

+1. What is the most important thing - disable Google Now, change dup to tar, delete backups created in dup (they are causing media scanners to go wild), disable motion, disable smart stay and that's it, more or less.

Just pop open the app named Rescan Media ROOT. wait like ten seconds after opening, then hit Disable media scanner. hit back button once to close app. And ur stuffs will be back in place.

I solved this by flashing XXKH3 modem in recovery mode (leaving RIL unchanged), using Philz Kernel 3.70 but I have GT-I9100.

2x battery life

for the sake of simplifying my phone, I removed all the tabs and kept only the following:
1. Home
2. People
3. SMS
4. Calendar
5. Settings
Now I see that my battery life is almost double than before.
wow!
That is an interesting observation, and I think I will try it. Have you tried adding the tabs back in to confirm? How long before someone asks for a .cab file?
u will be suprised LOL
thanks for the tip, since i dont really use those tabs much might as well get rid of them
Remove Sense completely and benefit even more
I know some people can't live without it though. Anything that saves power and makes the phone more responsive is a good result.
Well played!
i would...but i dont find titanium smooth...
another note..i have 4 email accounts incl. 1 ms exchange..
The reason why is simple
When u place the tabs Pictures and Music they will take up memory because they keep searching for music and pictures
memory consuumption is no different. still 60% or so with no open apps.

That's so funny
i think i missed this...i also disabled the ambient light sensor. that maybe the reason for longer battery life.
how do you disable that? is it the automatically adjust light from battery settings?
Right. I set the brightness min/max permanently insteadof "autmatic".
My internet connection was always on and I generally charged my phone via the computer using the usb lead.
Recently started charging it overnight using the mains and keep the internet connection off when I am not using it. I have noticed a huge difference. Instead of 24hours use, I now easily get a day and a half!

Make things a bit quicker - My experience

I've been trying loads of things to try to make things speed up a bit more with my rooted Bell Atrix running the new Telstra FW, and the 4 things I've found that seem to improve the UI speed that do not require rooting, are as follows:
1. On a fresh reset, use the Atrix to format both internal and external SD cards. For some reason after doing this on a fresh reset, it seemed to speed up the "instant on" when the phone is asleep and you press the fingerprint scanner on/off button to wake the phone. Of course, remember to back up your external SD to your PC prior to doing this.
2. Setting the Wifi to be always on (never sleep when its on).
3. Don't use ATK task killer
4. Don't use SetCPU
Even with all my apps reloaded, and loads of use over the last few days, I found these things to cut the usual 3-5 second wake time to between 1-2 seconds, and for some reason the general UI speed was much better (even using Blur)
I'd be interested to hear any feedback on people who are thinking about starting fresh and resetting their Atrix, and trying the above to compare to what they had.
I'm rocking the telstra with all the blur and bloat deleted not frozen. I deleted the browser because it doesn't let me download apps from the internet. I replaced it with dolphin browser. Deleted email and various other apps like car dock, etc. I underclock to 800 for screen off. I literally replaced every transition animation with an app from jrummy (root required) I use automemkiller to allow more memory for empty apps and honestly I have a lwp running and constant usage and I last 16 hours on a charge and use it constantly! Death to all lag.

I shall try
My phone has never required more then a second to wake. I see nothing in the list that is even sleep related - and leaving wifi connected all the time is a battery drain.
Sorry, but i only see placebo effect.

If you are around Wifi more than not, it is best to keep this on "Never"... The Wifi uses way less battery than 3G/4G. Having your phone update using wifi will save battery for sure.

You must have one special Atrix . The only time mine wakes within 1 second, is within 10-20 seconds of the screen going blank. If its been sleeping for more than 1 minute, it takes at least 3 seconds to wake.

Upset with Bell Gingerbread update

I updated my phone to Bell Gingerbread 2.3.4 last week but it seems to me Froyo was much more responsive and was simply... better!
Here are the problems I've been dealing with:
-Scrolling the front pages from left to right on the home screens are not as fluid and the screen touch response seems it has a certain delay compared to Froyo.
-In the Music app, when you are in an Artist's album and you want to go back to the previous page (by clicking the back button), it directs you straight to the first artist on your list.
-The battery runs out faster
-The phone always has trouble getting 3G data connection when it enters an area that has network after being in an area without it.
-Updating apps from the market is soooo much slower than it used to be and it always messes up because the same app is downloading 3, 4, 5 times simultaneously...
-In the Gallery app, when in Landscape mode, let's say you scroll from right to left, you have to wait till the animation stops so that you scroll back the other way... If it hasn't stopped scrolling, it will not respond by swiping the other way.
-The start-up takes FOREVER to load and it always gets stuck about a minute or two in that "Dual-core Technology" logo...
-When calling someone, if you press the power button to avoid false contact between your face and the screen, when you finish talking and you want to press "End Call", you have to push the power button once more to re-open the screen.
I understand all those points are minor problems, but they're numerous and it upsets me that a phone with this much hardware capability isn't getting the proper update. I dunno, I just want to know if you guys have been dealing these problems as well, and if you know what I can do to fix them, it would be great!
Thanks in advance!!

the most upsetting one is the battery life. I could go for 2-3 days without recharging the phone. Now I can barely do 1 day. And I'm a really light user. I dont have data plan and just use wi-fi where availiable. I think its super weird that this update made the phone worse.
The only saving grace is the addition of zoom on camera and separate notification cancel. Thats about it.
I have not been facing any of these issues. For the battery, completely drain the battery until it dies and then charge it to 100% without unplugging it. Also, if you are a light user and are not on the phone all the time, I suggest using Maximum Battery Saver as the battery mode. Right now, I am running Bell GB with both suggestions, have 40% battery remaining and have been on the phone for over 16 hours on medium usage. I actually like the update quite a bit.

It's common knowledge. A lot of cache/files get left behind after an update that are no longer needed, or old copies when it should have new ones.
It's always recommended after you do an update from either OTA or Custom Rom that you do a factory reset to clear out any old data that might cause issues.
Titanium is one of the best. Doesn't backup your SMS though, so you'll need another app for that. And only restore the apps you've downloaded and their data. Don't restore any system apps or you'll be back in the same situation or worse.

ICS in Note
After upgrading to ICS via kies,
Battery seems to drain very fast.
Camera hangs up sometimes and other camera related apps like Instagram also but maybe the pic quality is little better.
It seems to crash when some other apps runs too.
Not sure if it was there before but I can pause music and video if I show my palm on the screen.
The screen rotates faster than in GB with a pause at the beginning though.
News fonts are good.
Window animations are good but still dont' know how to stop it since it might be draining battery fast.
Can use Chrome now and it's fast.
I cannot use Mass Storage Mode. I recieve a "Ui stopped to work" error.
I am facing,
1. High android OS usage. Sometime its higher than Brightness, and most of the time its highest usage of batt after brightness. (I read somewhere, it said its calculation errors, but I think its not, cause my battery no longer last that long.)
2. Camera will sometimes fail to operate. I really dunno what is wrong with that.
3. Phone just cant go into deep slp. Its being kept awake by some apps (Which I cant narrow it) Using BetterBatteryStats, I found out its I2_HSIC. (Whats this I2_HSIC ??)
I am using a 5400mAh mugen batt. previously on GB, my usage can last me 24hrs, now it can only last 16hrs or less. I installed lesser apps, and lesser widgets. Disable account sync and google backup. Settings more or less kept the same.
Overnight my batt can reduce by 21%, it never happened before. lol. ICS...

It looks like a television station not tuned quite right on an analog antenna (if anybody remembers that!)
I can't reproduce it regularly, but It think it has happened when going from an Application, back to the home screen using the home button.
I am on ICS, Taiwan, stock, not rooted.

I faced this issue with stock ICS (rooted) .
I opened the browser to html5test.com , and the screen filled up with lines (similar to a TV noise) . Turning off did not seem to work, so i did a battery pull.

I faced this issue with stock ICS (rooted) .
I opened the browser to html5test.com , and the screen filled up with lines (similar to a TV noise) . Turning off did not seem to work, so i did a battery pull.

I can get the screen back by just waiting it out. Usually takes about 2 minutes. I sure do wish I knew what was happening, though, so I could confirm no damage was being done.

Overnight my batt can reduce by 21%, it never happened before. lol. ICS...

As far as #2 goes, go to your battery stats and see if "media" is listed. If so, force close it and try again. Seems to work for me. I'm not sure if it is just me or not because I have been playing with settings lately, but the media scanner tends to run wild it seems (also seems to lend to battery drain).
I am just disappointed that they left out some of the nice features of ics like the updated gallery and camera. Seems kind of lazy to me and no wonder things arent working well if they are mix and matching gingerbread and ics rather than going all in and starting development from there. I would definitely go back to using one of the non tw ics roms if it weren't for the sod issues I was having...

Iam not yet experiencing any bugs under heavy LPF usage but I agree they should have let us have more of ICS like wit the gallery

Indian stock Rom:
- Battery life seems to be strange as sometime drain is too high and sometime i feel it's better then it was on GB. yet to track the exact pattern but in either case no wireless, no gps, no Bluetooth and Brightness @ 10%.
- opening contacts taking few seconds but now search on exchange server is well integrated.
-i have enabled 'face unlock' and sometime it will not respond at all so keep doing lock/unlock till get restored.
.......and I am unable to find s-note application, i tried under system/app as well but as don't know apk name not sure. can someone help pls.
me too
I also got that green bands screen you describe. I held down the lock button til the phone rebooted. I think I was using the Dolphin Browser at the time.

I have a bug I have not seen mentioned.
Occasionally, usually about 1 time per day, My phone display will start to flash, with random green and red colors. The screen I'm on, will flash those colors then star to shake and slide.
It looks like a television station not tuned quite right on an analog antenna (if anybody remembers that!)
I can't reproduce it regularly, but It think it has happened when going from an Application, back to the home screen using the home button.
I am on ICS, Taiwan, stock, not rooted.
Anybyody else seen this?

1. Poor battery.
2. Sync errors: calendar sync freezes up every once in a while
3. Brightness slider in notification bar gone, tasker can not effect change of brightness anymore, only choice is to keep automatic brightness on, otherwise blinded out in sun.
4. Contacts and phone apps show up in 5s or more to load: need to switch to those ugly dialers, no choice at all
5. No widgets menu in app drawer as in nexus ICS
6. Launchers freezing: tried both nova and apex: many a times the screen went blank for a few seconds after hitting home (didn't crash though)

[solution] fix your battery on wls8

hey,
many of us have faced an issue with the battery after flashing the official JB
well this may not be a sol " cuz i don't know what happend!"
so what i did was
1. flashing LPF 4.0.3 wipe data before flashing , not after.
2. flashing the ls8 and the lpx modem at the same time no data wipe
thats it
I'll try this

From the screenshot I see that you have a big problem with reception signal, which, most likely, causes many wakelocks. Change the modem with one from your country. And whats the solution btw?

I don't get this too. Your screenshot is full of wakelocks, and the only reason your battery isn't empty yet is because your screen wasn't on all the time...

I found out that the new "google now" ate ALOT of battery in my case.
Try disabling this.

yesterday i stayed upto 6 hrs after the screen shot was taken, wifi connected and it last till 7%
for my modem, the area where i live having problems with connection, all the modems kh3 and lb7 did the same, at least this modem catched the gps here

and why did you recharge 75% through the cycle? the main solution has been posted numerous times and it has to do with media scanner running in the background

Sure, but first post what apps you're running in background -- maybe it's not media, but something else like Google Now, location service (maps)? How does your phone "sleep"? Does it wake up?
Anyway, media fix that seem to resolve my problems (no more media scanner in task manager)

hmm, im having a hard time understanding whats going on there, but i do switch my cam to sd card as location storage.
regarding your question, i tend to kill tasks always after i finish using my phone, in fact i clear the ram.
this is what im having right now, considering that i slept 8 hours of these 18 there, it's way too much, oh and yeah, i have the extended battery kit (official one), one more reason to moan.
This is the best battery performance I have ever had from my sgs2 (using siyah kernel and the scripts from the neat rom and siyah optimisation thread

Just as a precaution, copy cache folder from SD internal to SD external and delete everything in SD internal DCIM folder. Something else is draining your battery. That 18 hours is too little IMO

/storage/sdcard0/DCIM only contains Photo and Video folders, both empty. im using the stock file manager, i guess what u've asked me for may be hidden. However, there is a "/storage/extSdCard/DCIM/Camera/cache"
It is hidden in mine, but if you see the one on excard than you should see one in internal card. You have to look for wakelocks -- install BetterBatteryStats. I don't know any other method. That app will basically tell you anything.
Give this a read. It will get you started on how to find what's causing the wakes
