I've been rocking a Verizon galaxy nexus for a few months. I used to have a love for palm pre, but have some trouble getting used to its keyboard because of my big thumbs. I've been hearing a lot about the nexus 7...
I love emulators, and I love the idea of having a nexus 7, but funds are limited. I ordered a palm pre 2 for 75 dollars because while drinking I had the idea of having a small phone and having a nexus 7 for fun due to the quad core processor and tegra exclusive games. However, I also like the galaxy nexus because I don't have to rely on more than one device.
So... the question is this: would you prefer to have a lamer phone, sell the genes, and get a nexus 7, or keep the galaxy nexus and be in the middle?
I have both the gnex and the N7. If I were you I would just get the gnex. The gnex on jelly bean competes with the fluidity of the N7 I can hardly tell a difference when I pick up and put down the other. Notice I say hardly.... I can still tell a difference in some places but not all that often.

Nexus 7. A mere phone can't compete with its larger screen size and still just as portable. Nexus 7 is worth it.

I already have a Galaxy Note 2. If I bought a Nexus 7 would I feel a significant difference from my Galaxy Note 2?

Depends on your usage.. I wouldn't bother getting a 7 inch tablet for 1.5 extra inches, better get a Nexus 10

I now have both and I use them both for different things. Its good to have pure android on the nexus 7 as you get the latest updates first.

I have both, rarely use the N7
I had the Nexus 7 first, had the note 2 a couple weeks now and haven't used the 7 since..I am sure i will go back to it and play more but with the note 2, don't feel the 'need' for the nexus 7 now...

I'm using my nexus 7 less since I got my note 2, but that's expected with a new gadget. I am trying to share my time between both gadgets though

To those of you with both devices; do you find that the GN2 is large enough to use as your primary surfing device for extended periods of time? I am looking to replace my iPad 3 completely. Since I have the GN2 I am wondering if it will fill this role without getting a Nexus 7.

Im fortunate enough to also have an ipad (am a bit of a gadget freak lol). My opinion is that the note 2 cannot totally replace my ipad. There are still things I prefer to use on my ipad because of the bigger screen. Web browsing for one, and the app store is quite a bit better.

I've got a 10inch Acer tablet and haven't touched it from the day I got the note 2
I sold my N7 few days after using my Note 2. Just didnt see a point in going back and forth for an extra 1.5 inch. Plust N7 lacks the feautures I now need and am used to.
But if you really want a tab get a note 10.1 or N10 but iPad is not worth it just because iOS sucks.

No, but then I didn't feel that way about the N7 either (which I sold after getting my GN2). So that's not really a difference between them if you ask me. On both devices, I could surf for short periods in landscape mode if I squint. Or I could surf on both devices for longer periods if I zoom, but that's annoying. Probably I could last a little longer on the N7 before getting tired of it, but I don't really think either of them are ideal devices for doing real heavy browsing of desktop-style web sites for long periods of time.
Personally, I think it makes a lot more sense to have a 10" tablet with the GN2, and that's the combo I have at the moment (I have an old Motorola Xoom, but I still love it). A 10" tablet really *is* different; you can browse like normal on one, read magazines, use real tablet apps, etc.
I don't think the Note II is different enough from the Nexus 7 to warrant having both, although it is true that unless you do some customizations, a lot of apps will automatically size themselves for phones on the GN2, which I find annoying. For example, GReader gives the tablet interface on the Nexus 7 but the phone interface on the GN2. Ditto for Expedia, which is actually really nice on a tablet. This despite both devices having 1280x720 resolution and only 1.5" difference in screen size. I think you can probably get around this by changing your dpi setting, but I've been kind of afraid to try that. In most ways the phone works really well totally stock. It's not exactly the same experience as the N7, but it's close enough that I think the N7 is mostly redundant.
I have a Nexus 7 and since I got the Note 2 I only use the Nexus to watch Netflix and Hulu.

I still watch Youtube on my 10 inch iPad 2 and browse, if whatever I'm looking for is difficult to find. Bigger is better for surfing. I don't know if I would use a 7 inch tablet though.
Have both, got the Note a couple of weeks ago and have found myself rarely using the 7 now.
It will get used for extended web sessions and movie use, plus my wife uses it a lot now she can prise it from my fingers

I got both too plus i also got the allshare cast dongle.
I use SGN2 for everything exept gaming.
I use Nexus7 for that.
Both devices can run everything i want , but gaming on the dongle is a bit laggy so the next best thing is nexus7
I also keep a second account for guests on that one , very helpfull and safe.
Youtube , movies on the dongle , regular use without dongle but still on the SGN2.
Browsing , forums e.t.c. i find SGN2 to be very nice , slightly better experience than nexus
Perphaps i enjoy the amoled more or its just light enough to hold with one hand durring tapatalk reading.
I usually don't use the Spen but i get mad when i need it and i hold the nexus
Ebooks on the other hand are much better on the nexus if you are into that
Pixel density and form factor are critical issues for you.
Another device must be of the same or better pixel density to improve your visual experience or you will realise its only a matter of eye distance.
7 inches is not significantly different from 5.5. Even reading pdfs would only be marginally better that too if you discount the added weight.
There is little option for fellows already possessing SGN2. Go for the Nexus 10 or the Ipad 4.

No, you shouldn't bother at all. I am using Note 2 and Nexus 7 and trust me, I mostly use one device at a time. Whenever Note 2 is on charging, I go for my iPhone 5 or iPad for my needs than using Nexus 7.
Galaxy Note 2 is a bit small compared to Nexus 7 but you get the fun of both tablet and phone in one device.

If you only have 250 to spend then there is no question. Other tablets at that price have aged software, bad screens, slow CPU-s etc.

Hi. I've been using the N7 (32 TV WiFi only) for almost 2 months. The first time saw it in a shop, I thought the screen is kinda small. But after trying it out for quite awhile, I find that it's just about right. Watching videos, browsing the internet or playing games is not a problem in terms of screen size. The 'neutral colors' of the screen is not an issue for me. I'm happy with the performance of the N7. I'm sure your cousin will like it. And holding the N7 with one hand is not that unwieldy. HATH.

I frankly think that 7" is a sweet spot for tablets: easy and comfortable to hold with one hand and large enough to watch movies. The iPad mini at 8" is already uncomfortable to use with one hand, for example.
The N7 has excellent audio output, incidentally.
Last but not least, as someone else already pointed out, there is nothing comparable at this price level.

Couldn't pass it up especially since the TAB 2 screen is really washed out compared to my Note 2 and I cannot access media off the 64GB SD card except through file explorers. Media apps did not like ExFat or Fat32. Kind of disappointed with the Tab 2. After I get the Nexus I will play with both and see which will be the keeper.

7" is what I would call the best screen size for a tablet - I've gone through an original iPad and a slightly smaller Archos tablet and the nexus 7 really is the right size and shape for everything I use it for, its made the full size iPad feel unwieldy to me.
And as for going into a shop and playing about with one, just before Christmas I was in Comet (UK) with a friend and I had a quick play about with the shop floor one and it'd be loaded up with so many active widgets it was like a slideshow, so I'm not sure that's the best example

This seven is my first android tablet, and I'm actually loving it much more than I initially thought I would.
The size of this tablet is just the right size, really comfortable to hold even with just one hand and the things I could do with it (reading books, occasional gaming, browsing the web and whatnot) brings no regret whatsoever

Nexus 7 is great you will not regret it, a 10 incher might seem better but bigger is not always better when you are holding it in your hand for long periods of time and there is no other tablet out there that can match the price point and power of the nexus 7 I recommend mine to every one

Agreed. Bought the wife a TAB 10.1 and that thing is a beast. Great for her as she uses it to replace her sheet music on gigs. At $229 to my door I couldn't pass up giving it few rounds vs the TAB 2 7 P3100.

I too was worried about this and I'm not price sensitive. After three weeks with the nexus 7, I can say I am glad I chose this over the larger one. In bed or the sofa this is a lot easier to us.

I know they are two different categories, but i do not have experience with any 5 inch phone and was wondering if i should accept a trade deal, my used nexus 10 for a brand new HTC Butterfly. Can you read books and watch movies on 5 inch screens properly?
the best sized screen to read books is 7". To watch movies a 10", for a phones the best size is 5" in my opinion. I wouldn't trade my N10 for a phone...but if you need one, I'd say do it, if not, keep the awesomeness that is the N10.

The butterfly is a great phone with an excellent screen. If you're going to read on it, I'm sure it will be as good as reading on a phone can get. Unless you get a note 2. Only downside is battery life. Here in North America the butterfly would be worth more than the nexus 10 but internationally I have no clue.

I have a Note 2 (5.5" screen) and both a Nexus 7 and 10. I honestly prefer reading on the 7/10 depending on the situation. I rarely ever read on my phone, just because I don't feel like it is a very good experience. Obviously, there will be situations where you only have the phone and movie watching/book reading is definitely possible. It just isn't as good of an experience as a larger device.

Thanks guys for the input, since i need a phone i think im gonna go on with the trade, or do you guys think i should wait for the nexus 7/10/4 2nd gen?
I remember back when I was trying to decide on a Nexus 4 or Nexus 10. Ended up choosing the Nexus 10, and it was pretty awesome except for stuff that required mobility (jogging, Ingress, etc.). No mobile data is also a slight pain in certain places.
Just got a Nexus 4. It'll be real nice for mobility, but gaming, reading, and media are really lackluster, in-comparison to my Nexus 10 (I'm used to 7-10" tablets though to be fair). Mobile data is possible though, and as is tethering to my Nexus 10.
So basically, both devices complement each other in my situation. I didn't really require a phone when I made my first purchase though (had some cheap free minute phone).
If you require a phone and know you'll be in areas without internet access, I'd say go for a phone. If you require a phone and know you'll always (or most of the time) have access to internet, the Nexus 10 + Google Voice would work nicely. If you don't require a phone and want a large tablet with excellent screen quality, the Nexus 10 is awesome. And if you want a balance of mobility, large screen, and phone, the 3G Nexus 7 is pretty much perfect.
Just looking to see who else is thinking about selling their other tablet since the new N7 came out. The only thing remotely keeping me from dumping my TF300 is the keyboard, and the fact that AOKP made it amazingly smooth and fast.

I use my tf101 as a teleprompter when making video projects for school. If my talent can read from this, I'm gonna try to dump the 101 for sure. Only problem is Craigslist is flooded with tf101s in MPLS right now :-\

I've owned 2012 Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and Galaxy Note 10.1. Digitizer pen aside the 2013 Nexus 7 blows all the others away in performance and usability! It even does things faster than my laptop! If I could buy the LTE version today it would immediately replace the Note II too. This thing is amazing! If it had Note 10.1's front facing speakers and S Pen it'd be perfect.

I gave my OG N7 to my mom..she needed it for school, so I bought myself the TF300 lol. I'm thinking of dualbooting a linux distro on it since my girlfriend stole my laptop :< I fell in love with my N7 the moment i took it out of the box, so I know I'm keeping it. I figure I may buy another keyboard dock just for the connector and stuff and try to make a dock to use it as a media player on my TV or something..I dunno rofl. I'd like to keep it, but I don't want it to collect dust.
edit: Maybe not @ the dock, since asus apparently made a dock with basically the same things I was looking to make lol.

I've got mine listed on CL. I've had a few offers. I listed it for $150, but think I might lower it to $130. If I cant sell it I'll give to to my niece and nephew who enjoy playing with it.
I have a Nexus 10 but I am going to sell it. Is already on Swappa.
I like the Nexus 7 to travel. Fits easily in my back pockets.
I do have a Chrome Pixel that I use when I get home so I won't miss the Nexus 10 much
My other tablet is the Note 10.1 which I love especially with the multi-tasking features so it's a tough call. I've been using the Nexus 7 almost exclusively and it's growing on me, it's a nice size for gaming and the resolution is great. Although I'm looking forward to Samsung's new tablets that are coming soon.... Never ending cycle.
Still keeping my original N7 for the time my mom realizes her blackberry tablet actually sucks and I'll give here one that actually works.
Sold my iPad 4 today. Was not using the iPad that much anyway...need to see how much I will use the nexus 7.

Hardware wise, it doesn't seem like horrible tablet. Anyway, I played with the Nexus 7 (2013) yesterday and it feels so light(like the Kindle Paperwhite). Furthermore, the screen and sound quality was excellent. it felt wonderful in my hand. To bad I in possession of a Samsung ATIV 500T (a 11.6" Atom powered Windows 8 tablet with Wacom tech) and a Kindle paperwhite, so I don't really need the Nexus 7 (2013).

For now, I'm keeping my 1st gen n7. I has aokp 4.2.2 and runs all the apps I need it to run and I still use it. I could care less if it broke or got lost; which is a great feeling. The 2013 n7 I will just use for basic things right now seeing as how 4.3 is new and not completely supported by all apps. I like the 2013 n7 better, but until the apps catch up, I'm going to hold on to that original n7. In time I'll probably give it to a family member as a gift. Everybody and there momma is selling them on craigslist, so I probably won't go that route...
This replaced my BB Playbook, which is going on CL asap, and I'll be telling it not to let the door hit it in the rear end...
We have an "old" Nexus 7 that we will keep for sure. The iPad was sold when we got the first Nexus 7, just a hard tablet to beat, the new one even more so!
