do i need a screen protector since this is gorilla glass? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

why would i need a screen protector if my phone is gorilla glass????

I'm not getting one, haven't had a screen protector on any of my phones and never had a problem with scratches.
I think they are counter productive, it is to prevent scratches but they take away the clarity and they themselves get so scratched up that you can't see the screen.

I replied in your other thread, but ill copy the relevant part here.
You need one if you don't want the glass to get scratched. Little pieces of sand etc... that are in your pockets or whatever will scratch the glass. It prob wont be deep scratches or anything, but you'll get those little faint whisper type scratches for sure. So for me i'd rather use a screen protector, let it get dinged up and just switch them out every so often.

For me, I prefer to take the chance on small scratches (large scratches are unlikely b/c I'm very careful w/ my phone) rather than decrease the look and feel of the screen w/ a screen protector. And regardless of what anyone says, using a screen protector 100% affects the look and feel of the screen. Some are better than others, and a good installation helps, but they are always noticeable, IMHO.

Yeah i agree, it does alter the look of the screen. Getting the crystal clear ones help, but you'll always know its there. I guess you just need to figure out what's more important to you. For me i want the device in mint condition as i will turn it over when im ready for a new one. My VZW Gnex (about a year old now, day 1 buyer) is still in near mint condition. You wont find any scratches on the glass and i keep it in a case so you wont find anything on the body either. But that's just me - type A anal lol

I bought back and front protector, and while the back one is perfectly fine, the front looks ****e, as obviously doesn't cover the curved edge....I don't know if I'll keep it on

Glass screen with/without a screen protector

As you know the Hero has a special coating on the screen, and through the first few days of use i found it awesome. Finger prints are never really much or a problem. But being afraid that the glass screen might get scratched i put on a screen protector but now sensitivity seems a little ( tiny ) bit less & the fingerprints are quite horrible. So just wondering who here uses it without the protector & does is scratch easily ? Comments welcomed
you do not need a screen protector for glass screen phones, such as the Hero or iPhone. My Hero has been getting a rough treatment for about 4 months now and not a scratch to be seen.
I got one from boxwave.com (Anti glare one)
http://www.boxwave.com/accessories/htc-hero-screen-protectors_3636.htm
It helps with smudges as well.
What screen coating are you talking about? White Hero has teflon coating on the casing which has nothing to do with screen, I believe.
I am not sure that Hero actually has got a glass screen. If so, I think that screen protector is just pointless.
If it actually has got a plastic screen, I would not ruine my phone with screen protectors. Phones are meant for us to use.

Anyway, a screen with very minor scratches is not only more sensitive than a screen with protector, but better looking too. Bigger scratches, well, a protector won't protect from those.
imo a screen protector is pointless...ive been treating my hero rly badly and theres not even a tiny scratch...i can even fall drunk on the road with ur hero in hand and it doesnt break (tested)

theres an anti-fingerprint coating on the hero. Makes smudges harder to get on it and makes it very easy to clean it of. Thanks for the comment btw

i tried it before but didn't like how it detorriate the brilliance of the screen.
I was gonna get a screen protector for mine. But all they had at the time were the universal kind. And I knew better then to fall into that. But its been a week and not a scratch on it. I try not to put other objects in the same pocket and take notice when I'm doing something that may put the phone in danger. Making sure to remove it from harms way. But yeah... I don't think ill fall into the screen protector money pit with this phone. That's my opinion though. I spent a lot of cash on those things. Prolly enough that I could've just used my insurance and got a refurbished .

i have the white hero and about the screen, i thought there was a screen protector on it already when it came out of the box? doesnt it?
i tried peeling the corners a bit but not too much cuz i didnt want the corners to curl up and not stick anymore, and eventually it'll bug me and i'll have to rip the whole thing off (happened before) so i just left it alone and assumed theres a screen protector on the screen

how does everyone find this concept in practice? In the last few weeks the phobic part of it seems to be failing, or I need to wash my hands more often... just seems to be more dirty finger smudges hanging around until I give it a good wipe with a screen chamoise

Oh the fingerprints will still show up but I just wipe it off with my hand (a firm swipe up the screen) and it's as good as new.
The idea is that the oils do sit on top, but they aren't sticking so you can just wipe them off again.
Yeah i always am able to see the fingerprints but a swift wipe and theyre gone. I also always find that when i bring the phone out of my pocket the screen is perfectly cleaned every time. I like it
Mine has a very small (5mm) scratch. No idea how it happened
I too have a small scratch, about 3mm, in the middle-upper-right. No big deal, but its there if you look for it. It's a white Hero, if it matters.
Those scratches, on the screen?!
I have a tiny scratch on my screen too! It's over the black part next to the branding though so it's not a problem. I purchased a screen protector after this happened though, just to be safe.
I use a screen protector on mine (and a gel case) and I haven't noticed any problems with it being less sensitive.
When I first got the phone (G2) before I put the protector on I noticed the screen looked rubbish because it had fingerprints all over it....
I'm happy to use a screen protector to protect against scratches.... I wouldn't risk without as I want this baby to stay pristine
I like naked gadgets.
To those who got scratches, what type of environment does your phone get exposed to? Keys and coins normally won't scratch hardened glass, but dirt with rocks and sand will.

Are all T-mob Vibrant Screen protectors poor quality?

I just applied an official T-mobile screen protector for vibrant... Applied it well with no air bubbles... but when I turned my display on.. I saw that it makes the screen look really blurry and kind of pixelated because of poor quality plastic texture...
I also noticed that the plastic film that the vibrant came with was better quality because it was completely see through and it never worsened the quality of phone's display.
Does anyone else see this with T-mobile screen protectors???
Any recommendations on which one to buy?
I feel like T-mobile really failed at making a screen protector for such a brilliant display.
I always get screen protectors on Amazon. They are so much cheaper.
I really like the T-mo case for Vibrant though.
Get the realook screen protectors. They cover the whole entire screen and buttons, can't tell there is a screen protector, and feels like there is no screen protector on!
They are $10.99 I believe for 2 of them on eBay and Amazon.
What about not falling for the screen protector scam these company are running, You dont need a screen protector for this phone, and anything you put on this S amoled screen will lower the quality of the screen, Remember you are applying a film of something that will have an impact. Go Naked its gorgeous.

How can you say that... There is No mention of Vibrant having a gorilla glass! On Euro Galaxy S model it does say that it has a gorilla glass protecting the screen.
Plus many users on xda said that they got tiny scratches from having the phone in their pocket.. without anything else in it! So there goes to show you still need a screen protector to protect from salt on finger tips and sand in pockets.
I keep my phone in my pocket with keys, coins and any number of other things and I do it naked (but that's besides the point)
I also saw a video on YouTube in Japanese where the guy was trying to scratch it with razor blades, keys, dropping it and various other tortures. I wish I had the link. Anyway, I agree that this phone does not need a screen protector and you will only be degrading the visual impact to some degree. With that said I know that many people just feel better about doing so.

There were several articles posted in the last week or so (Engadget, Gizmodo, Androidguys) about how it turns out that gorilla glass was indeed used on the Galaxy phones.

I'm with sano614, I bought and have had the Realook protectors from Day 1 and they are crystal clear, so much so that you can't tell you even have it on, but the protection is there. It's also great that for the price you get two of them. Here's a link to some customer reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/REALOOK-T-Mobile-Samsung-Vibrant-Protector/product-reviews/B003WL4W6M

I could bet that these people think they scratched it as I thought mine was scratched SEVERAL times but it was just weird smudges or something that looked like a scratch. After thorough wiping the scratch turned out to be an illusion. My glass is perfectly FLAWLESS with no special treatment whatsoever.
Take it for what it's worth. Maybe I've just been extremely lucky.
Went through 3 different screen protectors and by far Realook is the best. I can't even tell it's even on there.
Realook is amazing, I have had quite a few compliments on it after I tell them there is a screen protector because they don't realize one is there. +1 realook

+1 for Realook ! Like everyone here already mentioned, you can hardly feel its presence after you apply it and you know you are protected.
I've used Tmobile's screen protector. It gives the display a scattered rainbow like look. The only good thing was the matt finish was very less reflective and less prone to finger prints. I replaced it with Realook and I'm loving it.
I also have used screen protectors religiously. This time I had zagg, **** was too sticky feeling so I ripped it off after some friends said they go naked on there evos, n1s and incredible, so, I said hell, I never put it in my pocket with anything anyways.
Well, Its just sooooo much better without one. Ive yet to get a scratch either and even dropped it in between the seats of the car and it hit all the way down. One guy up above mentioned it looking like theres scratches but were wiped away, Ive also had those and thought, "oh crap I got a scratch," but realized it wiped right off and my screen also is flawless still.
Gorilla glass or not this bad boy is tough... Just reserve one pocket for your phone only. My right is only my phone and my left is everything else. Pretty soon it will become second nature and you wont even need to think what pocket to put **** in...
GO naked, screw protectors.
Honestly, if realook wasn't this amazing, then I would have definitely gone naked since all other screen protectors seem to take away from the Super AMOLED screen. But to all honesty, realook is awesome. It seriously doesn't feel like there's anything on the screen once installed.
The vibrant may have gorilla glass, but why not invest $10 bucks to protect a $500 phone anyways?
I don't run a screen protector and haven't had any problems with the vibrant or my old G1. I do keep my vibrant in my old G1 pouch case though when its in my pocket.

Is anyone here going Nakey with no screen protector? i've got one on right now and i can't STAND how the edges of the protector collect dust... i feel like taking it off..
Tell me your experiences with none on, is your screen getting scratches?
I hate screen protectors as well. That said, everytime I've tried to go nekkid, I've eventually ended up with scratches. No matter how careful you are, it seems, Gorilla Glass WILL scratch. Relatively easily IMO.
I picked up an InvisibleShield HD from Best Buy and it is super clear and flush. I dont even notice it on there.

I will prob go with no screen protector, I had my HTC Hero for 3 years and had very minimal scratching without a screen protector. I only ever put my phone in my pocket on its own. I also keep my phones for the 3 year term that I get them on so by time the 3 years is up the re-sale value doesn't really matter to me any way so if it has some minor scratches it doesn't matter much since I will prob just pass the phone to someone for free anyway. Not to mention it looks and feels better without the protector and why not have the best experience with your phone instead of babying it.
I've never had one on my E4GT and it only has a few super faint scratches that you have to turn it off and put in sunlight to see. I don't think I'll put one on my GSIII either - they always end up getting bubbles or peeling back at some point.

Wet.
I'm going nude too
The only phone I've ever had a tiny scratch in was with my Droid Bionic. But it was my work phone which means that I didn't baby it the way I normally do with my phones. None of my phones have ever had any scratch on them, and in fact the only phone that did have a screen protector on it, broke. Not that a screen protector is supposed to prevent it from breaking after someone stepped on it but yeah that's another story. I'm also planning on getting a white one and don't think it would look too nice after a while as the glue around the edges gets dark.
I figure as long as my pockets are free from anything else and they stay clean that I shouldn't have any issues with the screen. Just take care of your stuff people. Also while i'm at it, I think it's disgusting when people here scratch their screen then return it for another one. That's not anyone's fault but your own. There is already a high demand for these devices and the carrier or samsung should not be held responsible for that.
*gets off my soap box*
Screen protectors are a pain in the ass. Get rid of it. You can always tell that it's on there. Just take care of your phone. I keep my right pocket for the phone only. I never put anything in my right pocket except for the phone.

Stick your finger in the sand at the beach, then swipe your finger across your screen. Report back.
Sand will scratch the screen. Sand is actually at locations other than the beach and may come into contact with your phone/finger.
One year on the nexus and not a single scratch. My daughters epic is 2 years old without a single scratch and she just throws it in her book bag. Neither have ever had screen protectors.

Meh. Some sand/dirt is overseen depending on its size as not all dirt/sand is the same size. You can google gorilla glass and scratches and see it will scratch. I'm not saying everybody will scratch their screen, but I'm not taking any chances. Besides, I'm a pro at putting on screen protectors so I do it anyways..
If you are worried about scratches, I'd rather get a flip cover or slide in pouch than taint the display with a screen protector. Granted I live in the midwest and there isn't exactly a lot of beaches around, but I had my Epic since launch and never put anything on it and the screen still looks like new (the bezel not so much). It's even been dropped a few times landing facedown on my driveway/garage floor.
I have been naked on my phones the past several years and no visible or major scratches. If you are careful and don't put coins or keys in same pocket you should be good.
I'm going without a screen protector. One reason is that I suck at putting them on and get really annoyed with the bubbles and dust particles underneath. But the screen is just too good to cover up with a protector. I take good care of my phones so I don't have to worry too much about scratches. I had my GS2 for 8 months with no protector and no scratches at all. I put it in my pocket without anything else and it was fine. I make sure my hands are clean before using my phone.
I always start out with a protector, then end up taking it off after 6 months or so and that's with every Smartphone I've ever owned 2007-present.

Screen Protector Needed?

I have just received my nexus 4 today and I have kept the screen protector on it for now - is it worth getting a proper one?
I used one on my one s but got fed up after noticing a degradation in screen quality so I just took it off. It also got really oily which bugged me a bit.

Depends how anal you are with screen protection. I have a BSE on mine and don't notice any degradation.
I also have a screen protector on mine and notice no real degradation in screen quality. My protector can get oily at times (especially if you take a lot of phone calls and put it against your face) but its nothing a microfiber cloth won't fix easily. Worth it to me, as I'm very anal about scratches on my display. Those you can't wipe off with a rag.
I noticed a few scratches after I took it off my HTC but it didn't seem to be noticeable when the screen was on. Shouldn't bother me too much if I do get any.
How much did that BSE one set you back? Was looking on Amazon and a pack of 3 is around £6... Probably won't be the best quality.

Never used one on any of the phones I owned and never had any scratches on the screen. Guess I was lucky or very careful how I was handling them.
well i have a 2.5 year old desire that i religiously used screen protectors with, the phone slid screen down off a motorcycle when it fell out the mount and got dropped onto every side/corner possible i dont know how many times, although the top and bottom corners of the bezel are scratched and dented the screen is still unmarked,
im not taking chances with the nexus 4, i ordered screen protectors the same day as i ordered the phone,
so far its landed face down twice and the screen protector has a decent chip into it which you can feel with your fingernail but the screens fine, in my opinion the protector has done its job and will be replaced for another tomorrow,

Well, as far as I'm concerned the Nexus 4 has Gorilla Glass 2 in the front (not quite sure about the back, as I've heard it scratches quite easily) so I wouldn't worry that much about scratching it... but keep in mind that it is glass so scratches still happen. I would suggest to look around in the "The Best Screen Protector Thread" in Nexus 4 Accessories to see what users have to say. Anyways, your phone will always be safer with a screen protector on, but if you really don't want to use one then just use a case with raised edges to prevent it from touching any surface...
Just my two cents :silly:

Extreme solution for screen protectors with curved screen

DISCLAIMER: TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Supplies: Fresh screen film, a thin, soft cotton cloth, and adjustable temp iron, spay bottle, and preferably a infrared thermometer.
Video: http://sendvid.com/ez03e7q7
If you're anything like myself, then you've discovered a long time ago, that although unsightly, screen protectors do exactly what they are supposed to do.
Enter Google Pixel: A beautiful screen that's just begging for protection so that it may remain as such for years to come... But there's a major problem. The screen is curved!
After failures from tempered glass and a few different brands of film protectors, I ordered the iCarez film protectors. The technique they recommend works really well. Nailed it on the first try, no bubbles or fuzzies!
After a few minutes, I noticed the right side peeling up. Pressed and rubbed and did everything I could would not stick. Tried again with a fresh film. Same thing, although this is the closest I've gotten to perfection so far.
Here's where the disclaimer comes in.
I grab the iron and set it to "synthetic". I let it heat up for a minute and check the temperature with my infrared thermometer. It's at about *220 f. I place the phone on the cloth and fold cloth over screen. Just one layer. Lightly spray the cloth with water so it's just a little damp. Then I grab the iron and with slow, firm movements, press the edge of the screen where the bubbles are, making sure to not leave it in one place for too long.
I pull back the towel and wipe away the moisture on the screen to reveal it's working! I have 90% of the halo gone!
The last bit just wouldn't go down. So I turned the iron up to about *270 f and repeated the same motion. Boom! Flat, no bubbles or halo.
If you try this, please be careful. I'm sure exposure to high temperatures is only OK for very short periods of time.
**I will reiterate that this should be done at your own risk.**
DON'T BE A DUMMY. DO NOT PLACE A HOT IRON DIRECTLY ON YOUR PHONE.
Good luck!

I never run a screen protector. Honestly by the time I was ready to switch phones I had one or two tiny scratches on the screen. My wife always runs a screen protector and while I am sure she is just using cheap screen protectors her screen always looks like shiz. Oh the reason I dont use screen protectors is because glass apparently keeps getting better and better so where is the need.
I also don't put things in my pocket with my phone and I tend tp put the glass side in towards my skin.
Just some perspective from a guy that doesn’t use screen protectors or cases. By all means your money is not mine and spend it how you will, this is just some insight.
I ordered the iCarez [HD Clear] Screen Protector for Google Pixel XL. I have had it on for 6 days and have had No issues at all. Very nice film screen protector. For years I have used, http://www.clarivue.com/browse-by-brand-screen-protector.html. Very solid ultra clear protector.
Thanks

I never run a screen protector. Honestly by the time I was ready to switch phones I had one or two tiny scratches on the screen. My wife always runs a screen protector and while I am sure she is just using cheap screen protectors her screen always looks like shiz. Oh the reason I dont use screen protectors is because glass apparently keeps getting better and better so where is the need.

I see where you're coming from. I treated this phone like a sleeping baby on a land mine for the first few days waiting for a case and screen protector to come in the mail. Even then I still got a few small superficial scratches on the screen and a pretty noticeable one the softer back glass. A properly installed screen protector is barely noticeable and I change it out every few months when it gets scratched up. Small price to pay for the added protection.
It boils down to preference. At any rate, if you do like them, it's hard to install one on this phone. This is a way to get it to fit better. It's been a few days now and it's holding strong. I'm pleased.
I've noticed after my screen protectors get crappy and I haven't had them on my phone for a while, my screen never really gets scratched up. Therefore, I don't really use screen protectors anymore.
The only thing that ever scratched my screen was a titanium keychain accessory on my keyring. Regular keys never scratched my screen, but the titanium sure did. Luckily it was on a horrible temp phone I was using until my pixel arrived
I quit using protectors. Don't like the way they feel. And they have come a long way in scratch proof glass
Bought a tempered glass one about 2 weeks after getting the phone. And I got it about a day or 2 after its initial release.
Havent had any issues with it at all. Can't remember the brand, I just know it's a full protector, covers the entire front of the phone.
I bought the Supershieldz tempered glass 2 pack off Amazon as I have had success in the past with their screen protectors. It covers JUST the usable portion of the screen, not the entire front, and it works just fine. Zero bubbles and no "halo".
I've just got the orzly pro protector, covers the entire front as well with perfect cutouts
Easy to install, just hinge it and flap it on lol
