Root? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It seems that root hasn't been achieved yet? What is up with that, especially on a Nexus device?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996900

Ok, well someone JUST posted a method, but it doesn't seem to be foolproof. Why are developers having such a hard time on a Nexus device?

You think it could be because very few people have one yet, and of those few even fewer are real developers, and they've had them for a very short amount of time, and it's a brand new OS version and unique hardware? Just sayin'.

I'm rooted. Now I'm just waiting for a stable OC kernel and I'm set. No need for custom Roms xD

Keep an eye on Wugfresh

http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/faqs/does-this-program-v1-5-5-support-rooting-lg-nexus-4-or-the-samsung-nexus-10-yet/

The problem is Android 4.2 - not so much the device. It's breaking a LOT of stuff (OTG, CIFS, etc).
Since there is no "downgrade" for the Nexus 10, there isn't even an option to "go back" to 4.1.2 and "ride out the ride".

I was able to get the method in the devlopment forum to work.

Rooting-does it help lag? Why so good on n7?

I am wondering what the advantages on rooting the n7 cause at this point I see no need to root it. I have had other androids but saw a need that time, but not with the nexus 7. So how does it help the n7 so much? Does it eliminate lag that some people have been encountering?

Rooting does NOT in any way alter it's performance. All it does is give you (and some of the applications that make use of it) more permissions in the system.

Check out this article for a pretty good beginners guide to rooting. Basically it gives you more access to your device and more flexibility to do some things which may otherwise be undoable. As long as you don't search for malware and/or blatantly delete /system files and whatnot, it really can do no harm to your device.
No it doesn't. Think of root as giving yourself admin privileges to a Windows PC.
It's flashing custom roms/kernels that might help with lag. At this particular point in time, I don't notice an improvement yet, but they usually end up superior to the stock rom.

I am not a beginner, I am just asking how footings helps the nexus 7 in particular vs stock ROM. I have rooted and flashed ,multiple devices.

Don't root it unless you absolutely have a reason to need it. Seems like issues are likely to be introduced with rooting.
^What issues?
Not sure what issues arise from rooting.
Rooting does nothing to the performance of the system. And as long as you don't search "Malware apps on android where to download" on google and be stupid, you will be fine.
If you unlock your bootloader and install custom ROMs/kernels, they usually do have better performance compared to stock.

[Q] Some questions about installing a custom ROM on my Nexus 4

I know there might be so many threads asking questions about Custom ROMs and mine is going to be no different.
I have few questions about Custom ROMs & Moreover, one of my good friends has been trying to convince me to install a Custom ROM on my Nexus 4. He has done the same on his Nexus 4 and is really happy with it.
First of all, what advantages does a custom ROM has over stock ROM? (a little bit of details would be really really appreciated)
Second, if I am going to install one, I would really love to know what options I have & how much good & bad they are.
At last, I would welcome any other suggestions or tips.
Hope you will have a good day!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2180999
That will help.
Basically all of the ROMs, except that Optimus G port, will be fully functional. Your task will be to try a few, figure out which options you want and decide on the one you want. We cannot tell you what is good for you.
Start with Paranoid Android, CM and AOKP if you want loads of features.
My approach towards custom ROM is more about getting better software on my phone. With Nexus4, you can be assured that you will get the latest software always, but Better? Not always. CustomROM follow non-traditional approach avoiding bloatwares (not any for nexus I believe), optimizing for the performance and/or battery life, providing more functions and S/W upgrades.
I haven't flashed custom ROM yet on my Nexus 4, because simply I don't have any reason for it. I am happy with stock android, with battery life & with the performance of my handset.
Apart from all this, there is one more aspect,'Personal interest'. If you have that, go ahead, there are plenty of good options waiting for your attention on XDA
This will help as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284384&highlight=rom+advantage
2-3 features I absolutely love which will probably never make into stock roms are -
Sweep2wake - buttons have limited life, and because this Nexus 4 doesn't have warranty in India, it matters a lot. I just sweep on the screen to activate it. And tap on a notification to lock it.
Pie Controls (I have completely disabled the navigation bar. I have a full 4.7 inch content screen)
CM Profiles - can't appreciate this enough. Very useful to filter out notifications during night when you want minimal distribution.
Keeping features aside, I have over clocked the cpu to 1.7 Ghz.
And Linaro patches for tool chain with which the rom is compiled, improves smoothness and battery life.

If you decide to install ParanoidAndroid you get customizable navbar and notification bar. You can set the heigh of the navbar and also the backgroundcolor and iconcolor for both bars. PA have HybridSettings. You can display the calendar app on your smartphone like it would be on a tablet.
I tried CM and PA and i'm now on PA because of the customisations and the better implemented pie. Both are very stable and the battery is for me like with stock.
But there are a lot of ROMs and like already said you have to find "your" ROM
First of all, I apologize for replying late. Secondly, thanks for your answers, they helped me a lot. I actually have one more question,
I want as much as customization and little bit more battery life, which ROM is really good for that?
Moreover, is there any comprehensive list of custom ROMs for Nexus 4?
Once you go custom rom, you will never return to stock rom. Go for it. You won't regret it.

Battery life is similar between most roms. Custom kernels play a larger role in battery.
ROMs based on AOKP generally have the most customization settings. These include liquid smooth, carbon, etc...
Heres a directory of roms for the n4, but its best to just go through the Android Development/Original Android Development section and look for one you like.

Don't want to steal this thread but if you root do you loose any functionality ?for example Google wallet , photosphere or the android beam feature ? I only rooted a g2x and im kind of nervous rooting my nexus 4 especially because it don't have a removable SD card , when you back up your current ROM, do you up load it to a cloud service so you can get it later if needed ?

Rooting does not take away anything, except DRM keys.
You can always download factory image and flash it using fast boot. Factory image is available at Google.

To Pay or Not to Pay, that is my question.

All;
Now that Cataclysm is no more, eventually I will have to move to another rom. #1 criteria is it has to allow Pay. I don't want to debate if Pay is good or bad, just if it works 100% on your rom.
Can you all post what rom you are using that supports or does not support Pay? If you see for ex. Pure Nexus in a prior post's and have nothing to add, no need to repost it unless say you have issues getting it to work or such.
Cataclysm = Yes, currently dead
Benzo (Great!! rom) = No, currently not supported
Chroma = Yes
Pure Nexus = Works with "some work"
I am running Chroma and have had no issues with Android Pay. Have made multiple purchases since I flashed it awhile back.

It won't work because Xposed has to modify the system partition. I thought I read somewhere that they were attempting to make a systemless Xposed, but I can't find it. I could be wrong.

I believe you will see Cata roms pop up when Feb. security patch comes around. you just wont see any of his work on XDA. I think he hinted towards it a bit. Not confirmed but a def. hunch. We will find out in a couple weeks. If not i will move towards Pure Nexus and go through the steps of getting AP to work on there. I would jump on Chroma as well but he doesnt support expanded desktop anymore. I believe that is a very underrated feature.
Also on Chroma...for now.

Because it has root, any ROM that has root requires some slight work to get it to work. You can always flash the SU remover zip and it should work with no other steps.

Well Believe it or not I'm working on one for the past couple of weeks since I love my Axon 7 so much. But I'm working on it in my limited free time so the earliest it'll be released is probably in 3-4 months. I'll make a thread for it once it's released.

Eh? I think,
You are wrong....
There is pretty much EVERYTHING DECENT about Chainfire's ability and dedication to continue rooting each successive version of Android. Pixel was first to ship with 7.1, and there ARE differences between the new systemless root and 6.0 or 6.0.1 root methodology.
Why does your message just sound like a CALITALIZED rambling of a spoilsport? I dunno. It does to me, anyway.
There is like nothing special about ANYthing new, got us there aha!
I like the advent of new tech and new methods, even if novelty is old by now.

No there isn't.
The only explanation for keeping the source code closed, is because he is HIDING something in it. I wouldn't touch that garbage if my life depended on it.
WHY DO YOU THINK I MAINTAIN MY OWN SOURCE?
And like I already said, there was *absolutely nothing* special about the pixel.
He's just trying to drum up an "awww cool" factor that is undeserved.

I literally have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and you might not. However, I can instantly recognise paranoid conspiracy theory.
Literally, the "only" reason -ever- for *shudder* an Android dev protecting some measure of private and intellectual property is..... He is evil and hiding his violence from all of us!?
Cool story bro.
Maintain your own source if you want, but people are allowed to keep some property to themselves.
