Shouldn't my N7 be auto restoring apps from my GNex or am I missing something - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a N7 and a Gnex, just upgraded both to 4.2 and I'm wondering if my N7 should be syncing all my apps on my google account like it did with my Gnex. Same account on both devices, but only the Gnex auto restored everything. Is there a setting to get the N7 to auto restore from a different device or what?
Basically I'm trying to get my N7 to auto install the apps after upgrading to 4.2 so everything's the same as my Gnex.

That's not the way it works.

So there's not really a way of doing that then is there besides using TiBu? It'd be nice if I could have them both sync'd so no matter which device I picked up everything's the same =/.

+1
That's one of the reasons why I haven't updated yet.

Please don't restore your apps via TiBu. If you go to My Apps in Play, apps purchased under your google account will be there for you to download without paying again. You can also d/l any other apps you already have or want. You will be much better off d/l these apps since a good many have been updated already for 4.2.

Well yeah I know I can do that, but I have way to many apps and I just figured since it's linked to my GNex as well and I've go them already restored for 4.2 there that they'd restore on my N7 as well. But no big deal on manuall doing it.

Apps are restored to the individual device that they were installed to. It would be a veritable mess if they pushed to every device on the account.

Google Play Issue

Morning Guys
Just a quickie, opened up Google play on the N7 this morning and I've seemed to have lost Movies and Books - thought I'd check it out on my phone (which is rooted and running a custom ROM) and i can access them no probs.
Play was working fine last night when i left it to go to bed. One opening it this morning it did ask me to accept T&Cs which i thought a little odd
The N7 is rooted although stock with Nova Launcher. Running JB 4.2.1 with Play version 3.10.9. I've tried uninstalling updates and clearing the cache, data etc with no joy.
Apologies is this is in the wrong section or has been asked before.
Try deleting your Google account, rebooting, and adding it back.

Nope still no joy
Check to see where it's geographically placing you. If, as my old N7 did, it "locates" you in some off the wall country, some services are going to be blocked.

[Q] Backup and restore for a non-rooted N7

I got my nexus 7 recently and seems to have the battery drain issue. I monitored the apps running and all that. Adjusted settings according to some of the threads I've read.
I wanted to reset my N7 and don't plan on rooting it yet. However, I've spent hours downloading apps, placing icons and widgets where I like them on my screen. I also created google chrome website via link icons on my screens to quickly access my favorite websites.
Is there a App on the play store that will restore the apps, settings, wallpaper, icons and widgets?
So far I see there's titanium and nandroid (requires root) and mybackup (without root).
*I was happy to get rid of all my apple products but only miss the restore function

Under settings go to Backup and Reset. Make sure Back up my Data and Automatic Restore are selected. It will save your settings and a list of your apps on Google's servers. When you re-setup your Google account your apps will automatically re-download and install.
You can use wug's nexus root toolkit, take a full apps backup with data and shared folder. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475

[GUIDE] Nexus 5 apps safe to remove

Hi there!
I've put together a spreadsheet of apps that are (or so far seem) safe to remove from the Nexus 5. Note that I am running 4.4 KitKat, which has been unlocked with TWRP and rooted. The spreadsheet comes from the combined efforts of hallstevenson's spreadsheet on the Galaxy S3 for Spring (which I adapted and updated for the Verizon version), and referencing MoJo's script for removing Nexus 5 bloatware. I used Titanium Backup to go through and type in the packages and APK names.
CLICK HERE FOR ACCESS TO THE SPREADSHEET [GOOGLE DOCS]
Click the "5.1" tab.
If you have questions, comments, suggestions, concerns, or want to tell me exactly where I'm wrong about something, please leave a comment here! If such a list already exists, I couldn't find it through searching. And if I'm in the wrong category, I apologize; seeing MoJo's script here led me to think this would be the appropriate place.
**UPDATE FOR LOLLIPOP 5.1**

Updated for Lollipop!
I'm back with an update! You can use the same link above. Note that this time I've added a tab for Android 5.0 Lollipop. (There's also a tab for what I believe is 4.4.4, which I started and didn't finish... Sorry!) Again, I'm on a stock ROM from Google's firmware page, and I used Titanium Backup (v 6.2.0) to go through this list. I had a couple of app updates after flashing the new ROM, so the version numbers might not quite match up. As usual, let me know if there are any issues, or if you've figured out if an app can be removed that I've left blank. If you're going to be adventurous, it's best to freeze an app and test rather than delete it, and make a backup before you delete.
Enjoy!

Can we get rid of Google+ and still be able to have a photo gallery?
I tried freezing it and I couldn't access my photos because I had to enable Google+.

Not sure. I'd think the Photos app would still work, but maybe not. I actually use Google+ on a constant basis so I haven't removed the app.
You deactivated the exchange services, so do you get any emails with auto synchronisation ? Or are the exchange services only for the E-Mail app, which isnt working on L anymore?

I removed the email exchange services because I do not use them. I strictly use the GMail app. I imagine they still work fine!
this is awesome
awesome ... phone is a little faster now .. still have the google apps on it .. as i use all of them
Bump for 5.0.1 update (see original post)
Hey, I am a tad bit confused here..
I currently have two Exchange Services.
1) com.google.android.gm.exchange
(ver. 6.5-1520254)
2) com.android.exchange
(ver. 4.4.4-6936)
I'm sure the second one is the one I can delete but was just unsure about the first one.

The first one is the one I have marked as safe to delete. I don't know what the second is, maybe something left over from KitKat? Try freezing them with TitaniumBackup and reboot, see if they give you any issues. If they don't, make backups and remove them.

Okay, I didn't think this would have much to do with it but I am using Slimkat 4.4.4, so I didn't think to look in the 5.0 tab. I shall see what happens when I freeze the other EServices.
Thanks for the reply.
Edit: Well, I have backed-up both Exchange Services and removed them both and nothing seems to have changed *Shrugs* Ahh well.

Well, generally speaking, you should be looking in the tab for your current Android version. (Or as close as your custom ROM gets.) The list is based on a fresh install of the ROM, so if your apps have updated since, they'll show different version numbers and possibly different locations, too. Something I didn't think to include in my post, sorry!

Well I flashed the ROM last week, so anything could have updated. Anyway, thanks for the help. I just wanted to have an opinion on the random system app first before I went ahead and removed it.
Cheers.

The first works with gmail exchange second is for email app exchange. Should be no issue deleting both. I use 1 and delete 2.
Do not remove g+ on lolipop if you want photos to work. They are linked

transfer app data from old phone

There was an option during setup to transfer app data from my old phone. I skipped it initially as I figured I'd do it later, but now I can't find it... Can anyone help me find this option? Also, am I going to have problems using this option coming from an Amazon Fire Phone?

Go in to the google settings app on your old phone. Then scroll down and click "set up nearby device". The instructions will then tell you too turn on bluetooth and wifi to find your new phone. I used this method and not all my contacts transferred over so i have to use a third party app. I used CM backup and it transferred everything over.
Not every phone will have this option, tho.
Titanium backup can do this for you.
Okay, I tried this but it isn't doing anything at least for my non-google apps.
Old Phone - Rooted Amazon Fire Phone
New Phone - Unrooted Nexus 6P (I'm trying unrooted this time)
So I can use titanium backup to backup on the Fire Phone, but I can't restore onto the new phone (since no root). I think I can also use titanium backup to create apk's containing the data to install on the new phone, but then things wouldn't be linked to the google play store anymore (I think?). Any other ideas? The fact that my Fire phone is rooted should be helpful, right? I'm just not quite sure how to get the restore to happen. What if I did a titanium backup and restored to another android phone that had google syncing capabilities... would my Nexus 6P apps get the updated app data then? It seems like a lot of work, but if it'll actually work it'd be worth a try.

Anyone get their Essential phone to use previously synced data?

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P, running Oreo. And upon setting up my new Essential phone, the only backup I could chose was from my chromebook. Both my chromebook and Nexus 6P show the backed up data on my Google Drive.
Also, if you go to Settings>Backup&Reset>Google Account: it will show "Back up to Google Drive - disabled by your admin"...
I really want all my old wifi passwords, etc.. can care less about manually selecting apps to install.
I did a quick search, and others with different phones are having the same issue, and supposedly google will fix sep 21st... I'm just curious if this is affecting everyone, or select accounts?
I do not think Oreo back-ups will work with Nougat

I had the same issue. With the help of another XDA member, I determined it was because my XL was on Oreo. I had the option of backing up to my Nougat Pixel non-XL.
This is exactly the problem. Can't restore a newer OS version to an older OS version unfortunately.
Cool, thanks guys. I'll power on one of my other nexus devices and see if they create a backup I can use. I have a Nexus 6 so that should work.
I never got either my 6p or 5x to oreo but still it only gave me one 5x backup with all my apps . Last time I reflashed the 5x I still had 15 from 6p and 5x to choose from.

Yeah I had the same problem, Pixel XL on Oreo and not showing up in my device sync list on the Essential Phone. Luckily if you are setup correctly your Gmail account should sync the wifi passwords and such after login. Just no the very first prompt at setup.
I think you might also need to login to Chrome to let it sync too... I noticed that some things didn't synch right until I used Chrome once.
not to chime in with the same news, but I cam from a GS8 and it wouldn't sync with my messages or anything
Came from a Pixel XL, not on Oreo and having the same issue. Any ideas? I would loved to get my SMSs and Wifi PWs back
Use a SMS backup app on your previous phone. Then bring the file over to your new phone. The WiFi, I got nothin'

This might be off topic but I have the HTC10. If I plug one end of the USB cable into that and the other end into the Essential, can I do a quick restore like that?

I thought it would work that way also but it doesn't give you the option to do it that way

I used ADB backup and then used ADB restore for the Essential.
I had to use a back of an old phone then used the ADB restore on top of of that.
