So I am not an expert on cell phone technology but I have been doing a lot of reading about the Nexus 4 (my new phone) and T-Mobile (my carrier) and I noticed that the AnandTech review which says that

This has me wondering... Part of me imagines that given the uproar over reviewers over lack of LTE, if what I wonder is true then it would have been brought up.
Regardless, T-Mobile is building it's 4G LTE network on the AWS spectrum (. Does the review at AndandTech imply that the radio could be updated to support AWS LTE? That is, could it be possible that the phone will receive a radio update to support the T-Mobile LTE network when it rolls out in 2013? It certainly would make T-Mobile being the only carrier to offer a subsidy of it a bit clearer.

So no one has any idea I guess??

USA AT&T Galaxy Tab questions answered here

I created this thread because there seems to be some confusion as to the differences between the T-Mobile, Euro, and (soon to arrive) AT&T branded versions of the Galaxy Tab. I'm sure at some point enough information will exist for a proper XDA wiki entry, but for now, we need a thread for each variant with specs, and where possible, hack/flash options, including phone and data connections.
So this will be the US AT&T thread, where we can get the facts straight for those who wish to use AT&T as their carrier with a Galaxy Tab.

Alright, for starters, let me post the US AT&T frequency information, so that n00bs can be up to speed.
850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/WCDMA/HSPA 3G
This should be helpful when we discuss the Galaxy Tab specs. I will be re-editing this post as new information comes in.

Actually, the SGH-I987 version that AT&T is getting has already launched. In Canada. On two carriers.
The Bell version has two model numbers on the back, the GT-P1000M (firmware is different, and presumably less crippled than what AT&T will release, hello sideloading), and the FCC model number of SGH-I987 on the back cover, so the internals are identical to the AT&T unit.
And you missed a few bands, any Galaxy Tab with a SIM card will work on 2100 UMTS as well as 900 and 2100 GSM/GPRS/EDGE.
AT&T should be releasing their branded version of the Galaxy Tab on the 21st (just a few days from this posting). If I understand right (this is where the value of this thread will come into play), the specs for the T-Mobile version are different in terms of the 3G radio frequencies.
IF this is true, then it would mean that if you plan to use AT&T as your US carrier:
You must run an AT&T branded Galaxy Tab
You must run a Euro-spec Galaxy Tab*
*specific procedure for this to work is unverified at this time
Price
At this time, the price for an AT&T branded Galaxy Tab will be $650 from AT&T. It will have two pay as you go plans--$14.99 for 30 days and up to 250MB of storage or $25 for 30 days of up to 2GB. This is similar to how they currently handle the iPad plans.
HOWEVER, as many people here on XDA-devs know, it has always been possible to take a GSM SIM and move from phone to phone, and provided that the frequencies are compatible, the services should carry over and the device change remains largely in the control of the owner. Of course, they can detect the IMEI at the carrier, but in most cases they are not blocking IMEI's. If your device has the right radios and frequencies, it should work. In the past, this has been the case with most devices.
So the question is: Does the Euro-spec Galaxy Tab have the same frequencies as the AT&T branded Galaxy Tab? It should, considering that the specs for the Euro version seem to reflect the same frequencies that AT&T uses.
In theory, getting the software right on the Euro-spec Galaxy Tab should be a matter of flashing a working cooked ROM to enable phone and 3G connectivity.
As of the time of this post, one or two people have managed to get a Galaxy Tab phone service working with AT&T, although I am unsure about 3G.
Again, the purpose of this thread is to clear up these questions, and keep it focused on getting a fully-functional Galaxy Tab on the AT&T carrier. Meaning both phone and 3G working as normal with any other device.
I can confirm that the European Tab works fine on at&t with full 3G and Voice dialing.

No voice calling on any of the North American Tabs. The Rogers and Bell units are the same units AT&T will be getting next week.

Interesting news... I bought an unlocked device in Kuwait City and it matches that FCC id number, but it had some Arabic apps loaded onto it, does this mean the euro and middle east versions are the same?
Also, how much of AT&T's network is is 850?? I didnt think the 3G would work back in the states... btw, my home is in the DC area is that helps.. Thanks!

The FCC docs actually say that the GT-P1000L, N, T models do support 850GSM and 850WCDMA(3G):
Type the device's FCC ID info in, (A3L is the manufacturer code for Samsung). Look at the documents in the 824.20 (GSM "850") and 826.40 (WCDMA "850") lower frequency ranges.
The actual test report docs list GT-P1000L and GT-P1000N and a clarification doc from Samsung says the GT-P1000T model is just a renamed L one.

Someone needs to post specs on the GT-P1000. Because right now, it would seem that the P1000 is the best bet for those who want to use FULL functionality on a US AT&T network.
My personal motivation for this thread is to get solid information on what model Galaxy Tab will have full US AT&T functionality (voice and good 3G data connect), and HOW to achieve that (choosing the right Galaxy Tab and flashing the right ROM). Once this is nailed down, I'll buy one. I just need to know which to buy and what to do to it.

Not FULLY working on at&t's 3g network. The 850 band for 3g is still missing and 850 is their primary 3g band and it's slowly replacing the 1900 3g band. The reason they changed was because the 850 3g band can cut thru walls better and give you a better 3g signal. I remember when my area had only 1900. My 3g sucked. Very spotty unless I was outside. I instantly noticed when the 850 upgrade took place. Solid 3g even in the darkest areas of my basement @ work. There will be an unlocked 850/1900 3g band version on the tab but it looks like it was pushed off until early 2011. Probably because they knew they would never sell any of the current north american models with the 850/1900 3g bands (bell, rogers & at&t) For what it's worth, you can pre-order that version here:

That is just false information.
Their primary is actually 1900Mhz and they are beefing it up with new 850Mhz towers, not instead of current 1900Mhz existing in infrastructure.
Places who only recently got 3G service might be on 850Mhz but all those who got 3G up until 2 years ago are all 1900Mhz with the addition of 850Mhz.

Yea this article and all the others stating the same are copying the same wrong source.
At&t never said they will be replacing 1900mhz with 850mhz...they said they will be ADDING towers and expending their network on 850mhz.
Here in the sf bay area the netwrok is mainly 1900mhz but they are ADDING new 850mhz towers so now we get mixed frequencies in places where signal was bad. They are certainly not removing 1900mhz towers.

This thread encapsulates my concerns exactly. I want to use my tab as a phone, and am on ATT, so will wait to see how to best implement this agenda before purchasing anything. I have a couple of concerns:
1) I think that the Galaxy Tab forum should be split amongst various carriers, since future roms and such will likely be device specific.
2) Now that more information is coming out with regards to the Nexus s and Galaxy 2, I am wondering whether I should hold out. I do want a large screen, but the development community/google support for the next Nexus phone is hard to pass up... maybe I will buy both!
Regarding splitting up the forums, I don't think that's a good idea. We tried it for the Galaxy S models and it is something of a clusterfuck, and not as much knowledge is being shared IMHO.

Are these speeds LTE level?

I know T- mobile is rolling out their 1900mhz band across the US this year, and in the last few days I've noticed much better signal strength and I just ran a speedtest and was very impressed by the results. I've had better upload results but this is by far the fastest upload speeds I've seen on the mobile data network.
Showed the 'H' icon next to the signal bars, I wonder if our phones will ever show 'LTE'?
I know I'm getting 4G but never says 4G. Always just 'H'.

Haha, I, as well as many others in this forum have been getting 20-25 off HSPA 42. There is an internal setting in the Nexus 4 to enable LTE, and if you connect to LTE, it shows the appropriate symbol, too. Currently, the flavor of LTE that the Nexus likes is only available in Canada (and maybe other places, but not US yet as far as I know), but it's starting to get deployed in the US via T-Mobile. It started off in Las Vegas and Kansas, or will be starting off, so if you're not in either of those places, you probably don't have LTE.

Its always gonna say h. There are ROMS that replace the icon with a 4g icon but most of them leave them as is. That doesnt mean your not getting 4g , plus those speeds look very good to me

Those speeds are excellent for 4g, but with lte you're going to see upload speeds as fast as your download speeds.

T-Mobile isn't rolling out LTE on 1900mhz. That's just 3G.

I've spoken with level 3 tech support numerous times about the roll out of their 1900mhz band during 2013 across the US, and they confirmed that their version of LTE will use the 1900mhz frequency (which, incidentally is the most highly used global frequency for high speed data - I'm a British and Australian Citizen as well as US Citizen and use my phones worldwide). The 700mhz frequency is for Verizon LTE phones, so T-Mobiles decision to run 1900mhz will mean that AT&T customers can move to T-Mobile with their existing phones
Their current 3G and 4G runs on 1700mhz - of course your phone will only get 4G if it's hardware capable of 4G.

I don't need an article.. T-Mobile is deploying band 4 LTE over 1700/2100mhz frequencies. The 1900mhz band is being refarmed to HSPAP which will allow AT&T users to use HSPAP on T-Mobile. This also allows T-Mobile to stop using 1700/2100 for HSPAP since they will be using it for LTE.
If you are calling T-Mobile and expecting their "level 3 tech support" to know anything, you're doing it wrong.
Also the article you posted even proves my point.. "Refarming 1900mhz for '4G HSPAP'"

Thanks for your clarification. Good to know that we will get LTE regardless as the phone supports all those bands.
And, yes their tech support had been I'll informed before.... I was hoping that since several different people had said the same thing that there was consistency... Seems consistently crap information. However, 1700mhz currently is 4G, so moving it to 1900mhz is to improve signal strength through buildings etc right?
I've since looked at comparisons between HSPA+ and LTE... seems that LTE has a significant edge uploading, not that great of a difference download (especially as download speeds are often limited by the site you visit, regardless of how fast your carrier speed).
I'm sure I'll be happy with HSPS+ as I rarely upload much more than photos I take on my phone camera, and current 4G is plenty sufficient as it is..

What does "Global Ready" mean for the Verizon Note 3?

I am a little confused about some information I found on Verizon's Note 3 Page. It says that the Note 3 will be a CDMA phone but then lists the following bands:
CDMA Data – 1x and EVDO Rev0/RevA
LTE: B13 (700MHz)
Global Ready (GSM/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900; HSPA/UMTS: 850/900/1900/2100 MHz)

Does it mean that if sim-unlocked, it can be used internationally, and how, if it doesn't take a sim card? If it can be used internationally, I would much rather buy a Verizon (for the US) instead of AT&T. I use AT&T only because it's a GSM carrier.
I don't have the answer but I can recommend you to contact Samsung wireless. They certainly have much more credibility.

All Verizon 4G LTE devices take SIM cards. They have to, since LTE is based on GSM. Also, historically, Verizon doesn't carrier-lock the LTE/HSPA/GSM part of their 4G LTE phones, so SIM cards from other carriers will work in a Verizon LTE phone out of the box.

I found the answer here, by the Answerer #2. The 4G/Data part of a global ready phone is GSM compatible, and only that part can be locked for data internationally; the calling part will still depend on CDMA in other countries. If that information is accurate, I will stick to an AT&T Note 3.

Truth be told. LTE has more in command with CDMA in terms of radio/air interfaces. It covered within 3GPP standards (GSM then EDGE, the UMTS, HSDPA, etc). Rather than 3GPP2 for CDMA1x and EVDO. That's why Alcatel Lucent had a leg up on LTE since its deployment is more akin (specterally) to CDMA. But they dropped the ball, and except for the US and Some Asian markets, the rest of the world has 3GPP based networks deployed.
the Simple version, is LTE is not directly compatible with any 2G/3G technology, but since its covered in 3GPP, the standards evolved quicker to ensure GSM/EDGE/HSDPA interworking.
And beyond that.. what most people dont know, that interworking doesnt really work that widespread yet. In the US most mobile handsets operate on dual frequencies (especially all VzW models, ATT models are catching up) so they effectively talk CDMA1x and LTE at the same time. iPhones do not support that capability, but GSM has work arounds to allow talk+data.

(btw.. anyone with iOS7 and ATT.. what out you've got problems you dont know about when going back forth from 3G to 4G.. I know since at work we talked about how to fix it..
I believe a rumor was that it has the same LTE baseband chip as the iphone 5s so that you could potentially use the Verizon version on AT&T and T-mobile...any truth to that?

Global-ready is basically verizon's way of saying that it has a GSM 3G radio as well as a CDMA radio. That allows the phone to operate in Europe where there is no CDMA service. You can purchase international service from Verizon, or purchase a SIM from a European carrier while overseas. All verizon 4G phones have a GSM 4G radio anyway, because LTE is GSM.
(This means that with an LTE carrier in Europe, any 4G Verizon phone can get data in Europe even if they can't place voice calls (VoIP still possible)).
If I am not wrong with what I am saying, Verizon LTE phones only support LTE BAND: 13, which means that IF you are willing to use 4G with different carrier, they have to support LTE band 13. I have tried to use my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 in South Korea, I was only able to use 3G network via WCDMA, I wasn't able to get LTE service at all. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have tried to use my Verizon Galaxy Note 2 in South Korea, I was only able to use 3G network via WCDMA, I wasn't able to get LTE service at all. Correct me if I am wrong.

the different N3 variants due in fact support different LTE bands, so you are correct. Minor point not worth nitpicking from earlier post, GSM is not LTE. they both evolved from the same 3GPP standards body, but portions spread spectrum nature of LTE is more similar to CDMA than GSM.
I went to Korea last October, and they wouldn't allow prepaid 4g LTE. They would only allow 3G for prepaid service.
I had a note 2 rooted and custom rom when I went. I'm a US citizen and you have to wait about 2-3 days before you are allowed to sign up for any plan on what they told me.

Verizon xt1060 4.4.4 update works with T-Mobile SIM

I updated my Verizon XT1060 4.4.2 to the 4.4.4 with the posted method in the other thread. [FXZ] Moto X 4.4.4 212.55.26 (XT1060)

Now it works flawlessly with my T-Mobile sim using the unlocked GSM function.
Previously with 4.4.2 it would say "unknown sim", have LTE, MMS, SMS and voice call switching issues. Even forcing HSPA was inconsistant. Now all's well with my experience.

After further testing, I had to change preferred network type to LTE, GSM, UMTS. default settings were flaky after driving around town.
Rebooted a few times and airplane mode a few times. Still good for now. Settings stick unlike 4.4.2

I'll test it the next time I'm in an LTE area. The nearest one is 35 miles away. I could do everything on HSPA, but I had issues in LTE areas on 4.4.2.
I wonder if that means the Maxx will work perfect on T-Mobile when it gets triple 4

The maxx already has 4.4.4, had it before the X. According to several posts over there, LTE is still broken
The default APN on the XT1060 with 4.4.4 is now fast.t-mobile.com, so a manual entry is no longer needed. I still put one in though because I like to customize the APN type settings.
It now correctly falls to HSPA/GSM from LTE when calling out too, instead of locking you to CDMA voice. So, you can use the phone as a phone now, even when connected to LTE.
I'd consider this fixed now.

I originally had it at Global, but it started acting like 4.4.2 (problems switching between phone and data) after I started moving around town.
LTE, GSM, UMTS works good but takes a long time to find a signal if I come out of a no signal zone

I did set it to LTE/GSM/UMTS, and I added my own APN even though the default (hidden) APN is correct.
Yeah, even on Verizon, the phone is slow to switch networks. If I get dropped from LTE, it'll stay on 3G or 1X even though LTE is available; sometimes I get no data on Verizon for a while. Seems the same with LTE and HSPA switching.
I should add that Global mode doesn't lock to EDGE now, but it is sketchy, as you say.
I've been having calling issues using 4.4.4 when connected to tmobile LTE on my xt1060 dev edition. If I force GPRS, calls work fine, if I switch to LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (prl) I connect to LTE, but then can't make or receive calls. I haven't been able to figure out how to force H+ which seems like it would fix the problem, any ideas?
Also OP mentioned a "unlocked GSM" function, could you elaborate? I search these forums all the time but have never posted anything until now.

Think it should work as it is supposed to be a GSM unlocked world phone.
For me 4.4.4 fixed some of the phone/data switching problems and issues with the gsm settings resetting after reboots.

Well Verizon is currently doing testing because I made a complaint against them with the FCC.
I told the Verizon guy that I can connect to T-Mobile LTE on 4.4.4 (though I had issues with 4.4.2), but that I didn't test voice capability very thoroughly while connected to LTE (fallback to GSM may still be sketchy). So, he said he'd get back to me after they've done some testing on this particular issue. I did say that 4.4.4 fixed a lot of the issues I was having though, mainly getting connected to LTE, and having overall GSM/HSPA network issues when the phone was trying to connect to LTE.
Looks like my issue is that I'm not in the so called "refarmed" spectrum area for HSPA+, so I can either get LTE, or EDGE, nothing in between. I've tinkered with the build.prop to no avail. Guess I'll keep tinkering.

That's interesting considering the same amplifier for band 4 AWS LTE is the one used for HSPA. Band 4 AWS LTE operates on 1700/2100 MHz, the same frequency as the non-refarmed T-Mobile areas.
I think I'm also in a non-refarmed area, but I do have access to HSPA. The download speeds are just highly limited (0.05Mbps), so there's likely some baseband setting preventing full speeds. The last time I had reliable HSPA+ in my area was on 4.2.2 where I could pull just over 1Mbps down. In better areas, I get 5-15Mbps on HSPA+. These are certainly 1900/2100MHz areas.

I'm confused. Are you using a Verizon device? The XT1060?
While perhaps the same amplifier is being used (I have no info to either confirm or disprove this statement), the XT1060 (according to all relevant FCC data) lacks the actual physical radio hardware to support UMTS on 1700mhz. Additionally, 0.05Mbps sounds MUCH more like EDGE data than HSPA/HSPA+ data.

The Skyworks 77619-12 is a penta-band amplifier that provides bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 support for HSPA/LTE and is used in the XT1053 and XT1060, among others. See here: http://www.skyworksinc.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=1024
I don't have root, so I used an older LTE phone without band 4 support, and put in a T-Mobile SIM. There was no signal at all, and T-Mobile says this will be so if a phone doesn't support 1700MHz even if it supports 2100MHz. So, I only deduced from that that I'm in a 1700/2100MHz area rather than a more typical 1900/2100MHz area. The limited down speeds are on HSPA+, but upload speeds are around 1Mbps.

Thanks for the link. As you already know (no doubt), an amplifier can do nothing if the underlying radio doesn't support the band/mode (UMTS on band 4, in this case). Likely, they use that same amp in all the Moto X variants (except, of course the Sprint variant, which uses band 25 on TDD-LTE).
The fact that the phone won't work unless both 1700 and 2100 are supported by the radio itself makes perfect sense since they are using FDD-LTE (Frequency division - requires 2 seperate bands - one for uplink and downlink).
Did you try the app I suggested? The description doesn't say it requires root...
And finally - you never confirmed: are you using the XT1060, or the XT1053?

The app only lists possible bands and converts them to frequencies. It won't tell you what bands the phone is using.
On 4.2.2, my XT1060 reported using bands 1 and 4 for HSPA, which is 1700/2100MHz. I figured it was misreporting.

Lte bands at&t

Is there any way to switch the lte bands. Normally I would dial #*#*4636*#*# but the phone information is saying its not available on this device. Both my nexus 6p and my old note 7 got good signal but this phone is horrible as far as signal strength goes.

this is my question as well. AT&T page for V20 lists LTE bands and band 17 is NOT among them. band 17 is supposedly the main ATT LTE band, which basically means you will only be able to get LTE on V20 on ATT on the backup LTE bands where they are available ...
i'm looking for confirmation that this is true, because who knows - maybe some idiot just forgot to type in number 17 on that info page ...
Notes, iPhones and Pixel all have band 17 ...
obviously i won't be getting iPhone and i can't get the Note. i didn't really want to get the Pixel because i feel like it's overpriced ...
but if what you're saying about V20 getting bad signal is true then Pixel may be the only choice ...
i started having my suspicions about V20 when i heard it won't be coming out in UK, which i thought was very odd ... but apparently one difference between Snapdragon 821 in Pixel and 820 in V20 is that 821 has more LTE bands, which would make it better both for ATT and better as a global phone for travel ...
again, i'm looking for confirmation that this is true.

If you're talking about being able to choose specific LTE bands, I do that on my Tmobile handset using this dial code (use at your own risk)
*#546368#*918# - for AT&T you need to use 910 or 915 depending on your model # (not sure why AT&T has 2 different model #'s)
So it would be
*#546368#*910# or *#546368#*915#
Then

To revert back to auto scanning

THAT IS NOT THE DIFFERENCE. Modem and CPU part of the SOC are totally different things. The pixel is and unlocked and more likely to support more bands as unlocked phones tend to be more globally friendly. Chances are that certain bands are on there but T-Mobile has it disabled or LG. T-Mobile is usually more bands friendly but not always, as the HTC M8 was seriously gimped in the LTE bands, didn't even support T-Mobile's band 12. I would look at the unlocked version of the V20 to decipher more info.
And you're welcome for the undeserved thanks. Your comment made no sense. Qualcomm modems for certain phones are usually about 2-5 different sets depending on markets a phone will serve. It is usually 2 or 3 when the phone is released worldwide basically and every carrier and market will have certain bands disabled for whatever reason. It also rare for developers to enable them as it takes specialized hardware or knowledge of the software. Another factor is if the antenna for certain bands are even in the phone. No antenna for a band then no firmware will ever be able to enable it, much less some hijinks tweaking.

OK i followed your advice and looked up Unlocked V20. i'm not allowed to post links yet but from bhphotovideo page the unlocked US version has LTE bands: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 25 which includes the band 17 ...
while the ATT page lists LTE bands: 1, 2 ,3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 20, 29, and 30 which does NOT include band 17 ...
now the question is, assuming that information is correct, why on earth would ATT chose the version of a phone that doesn't have the main ATT band ?
is there any way to find out whether the above information is accurate ?
as an ATT subscriber, would there be any advantage / disadvantage for getting unlocked phone from B&H versus ATT branded phone from ATT ?
should i try to contact some sort of ATT technical support to try and get an answer ?

according to article titled "LG V20 Model Numbers (F800, H910, H918, H990 DS Dual, H990N Dual, H990T, LS997, US996, VS995) Differences" from techwalls dot com the ATT version has bands: 1,2,3,4,5,7,12,17,20,30 which again has the band 17. it has same number of bands but compared to information on ATT page it subtracts band 29 and adds band 17 ...
frankly, this makes far more sense than ATT page info, but for 800 bucks i need to know for sure ...

according to frequencycheck website the ATT version of V20 ( H910 / H915 ) supports all ( 8 out of 8 ) bands used by ATT, all 4 LTE bands as well as both GSM and both UMTS bands used by ATT.
according to LG's own website H910 has: 2/4/5/12/29/30, Roaming 1/3/7/20, and CA ... which is the same was what ATT lists except for "CA" ...
Band 12 replaces band 17
The way I understand it, band 12 and band 17 covers the same frequency range. At&t has achieved (they were forced by FCC) interoperability between band 12 and 17 now. So band 17 is essentially obsolete and only useful if you are on the at&t network. If you have band 12 capability on your phone, you can use any 700mhz at&t tower that formerly may have only supported band 17. Now all those towers support both bands. And you can use smaller carrier towers too if you have band 12 capability.
