AT&T HTC 8X-Customer satisfaction or issues? - Windows Phone 8 General

I picked up my AT&T 8X on Saturday, have 14 days to decide if I want to keep it. I've been on the fence since it's a little smaller than the HTC Titan that I was using. I like a big screen size, and the 8X is slightly but noticeably slimmer/smaller. Seems to me that the Nokia 920 size is pretty much the same as the Titan.
My experience with the 8X over the last 3 days has been fine, I do like the form factor and feel of the device in my hands. It's lightening quick, screen display is excellent, takes good photos (good enough for me). One issue that I've noticed but have not confirmed is whether the AT&T radio is different than what I experienced in the Titan. I've noticed drviing around in my car that the phone/bluetooth reception indicator drops to zero or 1 bar in places where I never had reception problems before. Could that be possible? I didn't get a chance to try to use the phone at those spots, but I will before my 14 days runs out.
Any other 8X users out there have any experiences with the device to share? Satisfied, not satisfied?

I have the 8X as well. No issues for me about the phone. Have some issues with WP 8 but these are OS issues. Phone has done a reboot on its own once. And I am still conditioning the battery. Seems to drain faster than expected but I have only had it since Monday. Overall much better than 920

[Q] Is Nexus 4 better or worse than other similar phones?

My jump into the world of smartphones has been small. A couple of years I purchased Motorola Spice. It was ok, froze every once in a while, and was super slow, like the original computers. Thus I got excited when I made a purchase of Nexus 4. It was all great until a couple of weeks ago when I received it.
Everything is fine except for a couple of things. The static buzzing noise when talking on the phone, kind of like someone shaking a cup half filled with sand, and the fact that the phone heats up after 5 minutes of web surfing, and is very hot after 10 minutes of use.
So my question is whether this is normal on higher end smart phones such as HTC One S/X, S3, S2, etc?
I have asked for a replacement due to static while making calls, and am thinking about selling Nexus 4, but if other phones have similar issues, then there is no point. I plan on keeping my phone for at least 2 years.
The Sprint Sgs3 heated up a lot, and the call quality was terrible. And the radios were the worst ever. I don't know about the other phones though. Would be curious to hear about them.

My One S would heat up as well.
It is definitely better than one X or iPhone 5. Used it before and hate it so much lol
Honestly though, in my experience, Nexus 4 has been pretty much the best phone I've ever used. It is as smooth as iPhone while maintaining all the customization of android.

Well I guess sadly it's good to know that this is the best device at the moment. Even though it falls way below my expectations. The phone gets hot after a 10 minute conversation, meanwhile with my other phone it took at least half hour before I would feel anything.
When surfing the web, with my other phone, I could go almost an hour before things would get hot, and with this phone it only takes 10 minutes before it's hot enough to not want to have it in my hand.
Reception wise its the worse thing I have owned, I think ever. Even with Motorola Spice the reception has been pretty clear, not to mention my old (12 years ago) Nokia, Samsung and Motorola clamshell phones.
Now thinking about getting a Blackberry 10, but not sure if Blackberry software issues will be a problem.
Surfing xda the last 30 min, nothing gets hot on my phone. Talking for hours isn't a problem too. No issues so far, last three phones were Motorola Milestone 2 (good, sometimes I still miss the keyboard) iphone4s (seriously I don't get the apple crowd, was really laggy at times, got hot and was a b*tch to hold for longer than 5min and I gave it a honest go, even with jail breaking it was an utter annoyance) and the one x which I found quite nice, but it felt a lot bigger than the nexus and was overheating a lot). To conclude: in my opinion nexus 4 is the best phone right now on the market.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
nexus 4 is best than other brand phones...
only time it heats up is when gaming.... surfing and other things... doesnt even make it warm... its cool
No buzz like I know a lot of people seem to have. I definitely have the reception issue and I've seen a number of other people post about it too, it isn't the worst reception I've ever had but it is noticeably worse than my previous few phones. As for heat, stock I noticed it to get quite warm under normal use but it has a glass back so that is to be expected however with franco's kernel the phone seems to stay much cooler (not advocating rooting/modding/etc to get a properly functioning phone just relaying my experience.)
That being said I do think it is the best android phone out right now and the best android device I've used to date. I would certainly trade my n4 for an iphone 5, I would be willing to give a nokia 920 a trial run and for me BB10 is DOA so I wouldn't give it a second look. If you don't like the N4 don't stick with it, there are alternatives and maybe something else out there might be a better fit.

Coming from multiple HTC smartphones recently I can the reception not being as great, HTC makes excellent radios they are the best in my experience. Samsung is pretty good with GSM, not so much with CDMA. But the LG Nexus 4 actually has much better reception than my last phone the gsm galaxy nexus.
I actually think the reception is pretty good, is it the best radio ever, no. But it's also a new phone on a new chipset which by it's nature of being so new doesn't have the most optimized radio software either. I'm actually fairly impressed with the speed of data connections on a extremely low signal.
The heat is overemphasized and I'd ask some users that claim the phone gets hot enough to be uncomfortable to hold what kernel they are running. Playing with the thermal throttling setting seems popular among kernel developers and it's possible a poorly configured thermal throttling.
The N4 isn't perfect but for me it's damn close but I don't claim that one phone is right for everyone.
There is no similar phone

I have not done any modifications to my phone. Heat-up happened during a regular phone call. But yes, when I do surf the net or play games, it does get really hot really fast.
As for reception, I am actually talking about voice clarity. Not signal strength. Signal strength has been very good.

Hows your Moto X holding up?

Just curious how everyone is enjoying their Moto X Pure Editions since they've been out for a little over a year now. I've left mine stock the entire time I've had it which is something new for me. As far as the phone itself is concerned I really like it. Love the screen, the size, shape, etc. However, really looking to get something else or rooting as I've had a ton of software issues. Apps not responding the way they should or crashing repeatedly . This is the first phone I've had that's actually acted this way so kind of turned off by it.
Stock here, 11 months of use, 2 updates (5 to 6.0 and the last security update) never a issue.
Just one time, the screen shows a rare horizontal lines, 1 reboot and back to normal.
The heat you ask? Yes, in chrome and YouTube, the heat is an "add on" not specified in the manual...
Great phone, but my next one is a OnePlus 3, not a Lenovorola
Enviado desde mi XT1575 mediante Tapatalk
Screen cracked on first one and had to play endless games with the repair department, including reporting fraud on my credit card. Both speaker grills are working on their second time falling out. Screen and glass coating are better than average on the replacement. I like the LTE bands, high res screen, and the ability to use a big microSD card. The lack of software support is the worst I've seen of an OEM phone. I had to switch to CM13 but there's nobody there who can completely fix the drivers - VoLTE breakup, proximity sensor bugs, speaker fade-out bug, no WiFi calling, poor low light camera performance, etc. I don't see myself trusting Lenovo again for many years to come.
Stock Style
Kept it still in stock. No major issues. Been using the phone with the stock Moto Screen cover plastic still in place (all moto phone have nice plastic screen guard which I never peel. Use it heavily for 3-4 days post unboxing and remove the logo, which has now dried due to screen heat, with a coin). Waiting with finger crossed for Andorid 7.
Camera app and camera as hardware was real disappointment. unlike G4 plus camera app, this phone camera app is very basic in nature. Also the camera is not comparable with other phone's of this budget. Otherwise this was an awesome deal.

Much the same experience for me. Very happy with the phone for the price (I paid UK £300 in December 2015). Still amazed at the sound quality from the speakers. Fast charging too.
I also had the horizontal lines problem about a month ago - thought the phone had died but a reboot solved it. Has only happened once.
Issues ? For me :
would like wireless charging
wish Lenovo were better with updates
maybe a bit too big - but that's my problem , not the phone's - I wanted a big display.
Bought it approx. 2 months ago (15th July, 2016) and really enjoying it all over except the display, my display is bit warmish when compared to other phone and also has a slight bleeding in left corner. I wish it had AMOLED display as the previous series. Camera gives really good pics so happy with it. Would like to know if anyone else has the same display concern as mine.
Stock rooted EU Style at 6.0.1 - so far there are no issues with the phone
Picked it up on the Prime Day sale.
It does the job and is better than my previous phone, a Nexus 4.
Minor gripes. If it gets the update to Nougat I'll be happy with what I paid for it.
It will soon be my girlfriends phone and I'm getting an iPhone 7 or Pixel X. That iPhone is just a screamer. Fast, and good looking. Would be my first Apple product.
Used to like the phone, now I'm extremely indifferent about it. I haven't had any hardware problems, but the lack of software support is extremely disappointing. The camera takes OK pictures, the battery rarely provides more than 2.5 hours SOT, and from what I can tell every custom ROM for this phone blows chunks (I've tried all the popular ones, but the CM base sucks). I've had sporadic issues with cell service, which I believe are software related, and to top it off, my phone somehow nuked itself while I was on vacation in June (I was able to get it back but I lost a bunch of stuff and had to re-setup my phone while on vacation)
I was at Disney world all day, battery died about an hour before I left the park. I got in the car, plugged it into the car charger, and while it was coming up to the battery screen it went haywire and rebooted. Then the charging screen came up and I shrugged it off. About 30 minutes later I tried to turn it back on, and it just bootlooped endlessly. So I had to pull out my laptop, use the slow hotel wifi and download the firmware, then use fastboot to re-flash everything. Luckily I use Google photos to back up pics, so I didn't lose any of the vacation photos.
For the first time in years I'm considering an iPhone. Never had to deal with this kind of crap with my old iPhone 5.
Love my Style, changed 2 screens on it, been stock since I purchased it brand new, not through choice, can't root this phone at all, I've tried every combination possible but the remote server times out requesting the token I'd so I've given up any hope of rooting it.
Apart from that the phone has been flawless, the odd heating up with certain apps which I can put up with.
Not really impressed with the way Moto/Lenovo have treated this supposed flagship in terms of updates and still no solid word from the company if our device will get nougat. It probably will get it but I would have bought a pixel xl by then.

No major issues really (bar the obvious update void). Still love the fact that the phone is smaller than my friend's iphone 6 plus, yet the screen is larger.
First phone I've ever owned that still does not have a single scratch on the screen even though it has been naked since day one, got the phone October 17th. In fact there are very few marks on the phone overall and I've dropped it from knee height onto the road a couple of times.
I often think about wanting a new phone (only because I have G.A.S (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) but then I realise that anything I get won't really do anything that this one doesn't already do.
Waiting patiently for Nougat!
I bought the Style with extreme enthusiasm since it ran "stock" android and had an SDcard slot. My initial impressions were hopeful... it was a little laggy but other than that, it was okay, and the speakers, OH GOD the speakers. But after a month or two of using it and unlocking the bootloader, it was obvious that there were some serious issues with the phone. Lenovo/Motorola obviously didn't know what they were doing when they made the stock ROM for the device. It was always laggy for me and there were other issues as well. After tons of attempts to find an AOSP or stock rom that fixed these issues... i gave up. I just accepted that TruPureX was the best i was going to get. It made me miss my LG G2 and HTC M8. Anyways after a little under a year i did a lot of thinking and eventually made the decision that i was tired of feeling the need to flash custom firmwares, bootloaders, recoveries, etc. just to get my phone to function in the manner that I feel it should. I ended up buying a (very expensive) iPhone 6S Plus. I understand that people will most likely bash this decision and i respect your views, so respect mine. I still believe android as an OS is superior, but the OEMs just can't properly implement it into their devices in the way that Apple can. I don't regret my decision and now i have amazing battery life and everything "just works". Which isn't something i've been able to say about an android phone. I'm not advising anyone to do what i did, i respect all technology as well as your views, i'm just sharing my experience. Owning this phone annoyed my so much i switched sides (at least for a while).

Sounds like we have similar experiences. I've never owned an Iphone but have had multiple Ipods and Ipads. I think I've grown out of the flashing game myself. I look at all the roms available for the Pure and I'm just not impressed at all. I've come from a long line of Android devices that have all had excellent development and this one has been a bust. I have also been thinking about going with an Iphone but I'm pretty terrified of getting away from the Android environment lol. I'm just to a point in my life where I want my phone to function flawlessly the majority of the time. I wasn't impressed at all with my Galaxy S5 so that's kind of turned me away from Samsung in general. I really liked my HTC devices so I may give them another look in the near future if I don't end up giving Apple the go ahead.

Yes our experiences are indeed very similar. The phone i was most impressed with was my HTC M8. The battery life that it gave with the "small" battery was amazing at that time, but my 6S+ has a similar battery, bigger screen and more powerful processor and it somehow manages to demolish the M8s battery life. I find it extremely impressive. I'm a college student and i just decided i didn't have the time to keep flashing things, etc. The only thing that i hate about iOS is the fact that you have no access to the file system. I may jailbreak and fix some things but for now i'm trying it unmodified. At least on ios you're guaranteed good software support for a good while.

This. Exactly this.
A couple of white spots on my LCD. Not a huge deal.
LCD cracked- without cracking the glass, which is a first for me.
It took a ton of work to get the battery where I needed it.
Development is dildos. ONE (brilliant) stock rom, and its developer left. All the AOSP roms have issues.
I can't believe with only 3 unlocked phones on Verizon, we don't have an abundant choice of roms. Ridiculous.
Had mine since Christmas eve. I replaced the battery thinking it was dying, turns out I just use a lot of battery-consuming apps. Aside from that, hardware has been top-knotch. No issues with software (still running Lolipop), but I rooted the day I got it and disabled updates because I heard the MM update was having tons of issues and causing pops in the speakers and battery drains, etc. and never got around to going MM.
Convinced 2 friends to get Moto X pures as well, and they both love it.
I've had the Pure since November 2015: rooted and spent most of the time on stock. Right now, I'm running Dirty Unicorns 10.6 official, which has the September 2016 update. My overall impression is: 5.5 out of 10 (10 being the best). It's a decent, middle-of-the-road phone.
PROS
Unlocked (no carrier BS)
Bright screen
Two speakers with decent sound
CDMA and GSM antennas
Decent call quality
Motomaker configured to taste
CONS
So-so battery life. My LG G3 lasted about 48 hours after full charge. My MXP lasts about 18 hours.
So-so camera. Forget about low light pictures. (Missing my LG G3 camera...)
Mediocre level of enthusiasm about the phone, i.e., it took a long time to get decent cases/screen protectors, ROM development is OK but there are more devs for other phones
Lack of Android updates from Motorola. (I prefer stock due to stability and battery life.)
Heavier than a comparable Samsung Galaxy phone for it's size.
No "wow" feature to the phone: everything is just meh.
why is it nobody mentioned about its ram.. ram management on mm is so poor. i get 600 to 800 sometimes 500 ram free with no other apps installed. pure stock no root.vthats why its so laggy at times... bought it last month for $260 with 32gb on best buy.. i thought it was a deal but cant help notice the lag sometimes. i have a lg g pro 2 3 gb ram with snapdragon 800 on 2014 model... i get 1500 free ram so why is moto x pure on 2015 model only gets 600 to 800 free ram with 3gb phone. will motorola lenovo can still fix this great phone ?
After loving my Moto X and Moto X 2014, I gave the Moto X 2015 a try. On stock It lags a good amount, battery life is below average, sound is loud but quality is bad, also when I receive notifications the sound lags in the middle of it, and the phone ran extremely hot just using social apps or playing light games.
CM13 was the only rom to bring this phone back to life for me. I underclocked the cpu and gpu because of heat and battery power increased dramatically. Notification sounds sound normal and even when underclocked, the phone is still snappy on CM13.
My gf have a Samsung Galaxy s6 with apps I use plus more and her phone didn't nearly get as hot as mines with also better battery life than I was on stock.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the HTC U11+, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the HTC U11+ is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I am not at all happy that I bought the HTC U11+. Overall, this phone is a 7 out of 10 at best. I am on T-Mobile and not happy. I have been with HTC since 2009. And was always impressed. The last phone was the HTC One. This U11+ is simply unreliable.
Calls: When I call people they are frequently unable to hear me on the first call. Maybe they do hear me on the second call. We do hear each other if they call me back.
Gmail: Frequently, the gmail app does not load properly. It will give me a white screen. I go out, and come back in, and we are fine.
Battery: It lasts about 30 hours. But I am not a heavy user, and do try to keep location turned off.
Speaker: Sometimes caller does not hear me via speaker phone.
T-Mo tech support said that this phone does not have LTE 1900. Therefore I am operating on 4G 1900. That is not T Mo's sweet spot.
Did I complain enough? I can give you a fresh one. I came back to xda seeking root options, but I think it is a bit early for devs. But they do always save the day. So, only love for this community.

I concur the Gmail bug. Also, the notifications drawer, in the home screen, takes several tries to come down when you pull it down from the centre of the screen. Finally, sometimes, the auto-brightness does not do its job with the brightness very low.
Apart from that, the rest is worthy it.

Sorry to hear you are not enjoying the device. I was concerned about my mobile signal and speed so I downloaded LTE Discovery app.
My U11+ never shows that I am on LTE on the status bar. It always shows 4G. LTE Discovery app shows I am connected to band 4 LTE and speed test shows the same ball park up / down speeds as my Pixel here in SF.
I like this phone ALOT but unsure if I will keep it for the long haul.
I live in the UK and the phone works perfectly fine even though is the Hong Kong version. People in the US should know that this phone was not meant to be sold there.
I am using Taiwan model of this phone on Tmobile in bay area and have none of the issues mentioned above by pklunavat. This phone has a score of 11 on 10 for me. Excellent phone in every regard. See my impressions/review thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-u11/how-to/impressions-review-phone-small-episodes-t3714841
This is the best phone I have ever had. Better than the U11. It offers great performance, design and features.
I love the Sound over Earphones 1++++++
I'm loving this phone
Brightness is good for me, night filter built in is nice to have
Edge sense carousel is great, and I've had no problems as mentioned above
However, I'm disappointed with the camera. It got really good reviews, but it seems that any shot with motion in it comes out blurry
Shots of buildings or landscapes are great, but when I try to take pictures of my kids, it's blurry. Apparently a lot of new smartphone manufacturers are concentrating on HDR processing rather than getting bigger sensors. A friend with an iPhone 8 has the same problem, as does another friend with the Pixel 2 XL.
I'm trying the Google Camera Port on my U11+, hopefully it will show some improvement....

Well, do I love it? I do like it a lot. I'm coming from the HTC 10 which I really loved but in the end the battery wasn't up to scratch anymore.
The U11+ is large, almost too large for my jeans pockets but that's not surprising, the phone dimensions were no secret. I got the hyped transparent black version and I like it but I think it's far overrated. Thanks to that ultra glossy glass back it's impossible to use the phone without a case, I'm using a cheap transparent flexible bumper thing which does the job.
The battery life is great, it easily does 48 hrs (without any optimisation other that disabling News Republic) and more (actually more than 72hrs over Christmas when I hadn't used it much) with the same usage pattern of my old 10 which lasted about 10 hrs in the end and one full day when it was new so this is surely a great improvement. The screen of the 10 is the better one I woould say, especially that purple tint when scrolling doesn't look nice, but it's sharp, bright and the colours are good.
I haven't taken many photos but the few I took were at least as good as the already very good 10's camera. The earphones are amazing and so is the fingerprint scanner.
I won't say that I love it but as mentioned before, I like it a lot. I'm still happy that I haven't bought the 5T instead out of impatience! It's also still early into the phone's life, there hopefully will be a few more tweaks and improvements over time.
Coming from galaxy S8. I can say this is the best device that I have ever had. Last HTC device I was using was htc m9.
Used my U11+ for a week now and this is absolute a real good device, it's fast and design is perfect.
Hi, coming from HTC 10. In my opinion, the HTC 10 was a good phone. But the HTC U11+ is absolutely thrilling me. Usually I rooted all my HTCs directly, so far I don't really have any desire to do that, because the device does everything I need.
The sound is great, the battery is excellent. The whole thing is completely stable and I personally find squeezing phenomenal, especially with Edge Sense Plus.
I just returned my Pixel 2 XL for the annoying blue tint and pretty happy so far, not regretting at all.

So while I'm considering the U11+ for its not so absurd price, you're telling me that you got from the Pixel 2 XL to this phone? Nice to know.

I was originally intended to buy the U11+ since I heard the rumors about its existence and that it was meant to be the Pixel 2 XL, so I was curious about what kind of device was this.
For things of life, I finished buying the Pixel 2 XL with a nice discount like 3 weeks ago.
Since the first time I turned on the device, I knew I was not going to be happy because of the screen and the annoying blue tint. I think people out there who diminished the problem is because they are not used to good screens or they are blind, and moreover, when they tell you "I look the phone straight forward", is bull5sh1t as well, because I faced plenty of situations when I couldn't see the phone straight forward and it was annoying.
People can say you can have the best camera, the best software updates, unlimited space for photos and videos, no lag, etc, but let me tell you that all of those "selling points" for the Pixel are not that good:
Best camera - Honestly, I made a photo comparison between the U11+ and the Pixel 2 XL, and in 7 of 10, the HTC was better and with more detail, text was more legible and forms were sharper. I think that HTC learned something after making every Pixel so far, but when I show the pictures, people just blame me and say I'm crazy. Video on Pixel was horrible and the audio extremely poor. The difference in aperture indeed makes a difference, even when it seems a small one.
Software updates - Yes, you have them, but guess what?, it breaks compatibility sometimes with apps. With the Pixel 2 XL I had a lot of force close applications, so what's the point of having the latest release if Google is not obligating developers to update their applications timely?. Yes, 3 years of software updates, but honestly, who stays with the phone for 3 years?.
Photos and video - I don't use Google or any other storage service to have all my photos and videos. I'm old school, and I put everything is a hard drive. I think is safer, besides, I don't like that certain things of my private life are around in the internet.
But the screen is not the only issue, I faced a lot of other hardware and software issues along the way, and thanks to the extremely bad quality control from LG and Google, the device you are getting is overall mediocre quality. I was expecting to receive a device with no serious bugs and well built because it a phone directly from Google, but the reality is totally another one.
Overall, I faced the following issues that made me return this phone:
Blue tint
Slow fingerprint sensor
Super slow "fast" charge (taking no less than 3 hours)
Bluetooth issues while streaming music
Problems with Android Auto
Banding while recording video
Awful sound and video quality
Coming from the Mate 9 Pro, one of the finest devices I have ever had, was a big hit for me to change to the Pixel 2 XL because all of these issues. Each time I saw the screen, it just made me sad and made me wonder: why a €1K phone have these kind of issues?, and moreover, what kind of idiot am I to buy and accept something like this with all these flaws?. Google is not getting my money this year, and believe me when I say that I'm a Google fan, but quality and product overall is not in pair with what most flagships are offering.
Still I see why people is buying and defending the Pixel, and in the moment I was packing it to return it, I felt bad, like if I was betraying Google or the ideology. At some moment I felt fear to return it and better keep it and accept the flaws, but that makes me no different from all the iSheeps you see out there that buy everything that comes with an Apple logo in the back, something that I clearly hate, because we are becoming zombies instead of intelligent consumers.
I have the U11+ for a week now and I can say I feel home again, is like having my old Mate 9 Pro, but with Android stock, and I haven't faced any issues AT ALL, just perfect, smooth and awesome behaviour. I can highly recommend the device.
P.D.: Sorry for the long post.
I have been using the U11+ since December 21st and I love it. The phone is very fast, has a very good display and a great design. The only negative side is that it needs a bit more care when holding it in the hand not to fall.
Overall, this is a great phone and it is the best HTC has ever made.
Hi guys,
Do you know if we get the full Oreo functionality and features? I know about PIP which requires a subscription to Youtube, do we get anything else? I read that Smart Text doesn't work in the U11 section...

Smart Text is not working from me, and I didn't notice it until you mentioned it.
PiP is working for me with maps in driving mode.
Besides that, I haven't noticed much.

Switching to and from Mi A1

Not sure if this is the right thread to post it, it'd be helpful if the mods can categorize it correctly as I'm not very frequent here. So it here goes.
I had the Moto X 2nd gen (2014) for about 3 years and I really enjoyed the phone for the time. The 2gb ram and 16gb non-expandable storage was becoming unusable in 2017 and certainly the abysmal battery was not helping either. So was looking for an upgrade and was not planning to go back to Moto ever since Lenovo took over. Yes I'm a sucker for stockish android, so there weren't many options at the time. I'm not a heavy phone user, mostly do phone calls, texting, youtube and music streaming, GPS navigation, some occasional photos and very light gaming as I don't enjoy mobile gaming much(pcmasterrace here). Then the mi a1 was announced with android one program and it definitely seemed like a good deal to me. So bought one the same month it came out. Initial impression were like it's sleek and felt premium and performance seemed slightly better the Moto X2, hated the big bezel, capacitive keys and size of the phone. Overall was happy with it.
3 months on using it, it just died one day. Wouldn't power on, led doesn't light up when connecting the charging cable. Took it to the service center and got to know that the motherboard was dead and since there was no water or physical damage, they offered to replace the board free of charge. But I insisted them to get me a new unit, which they agreed to. And this whole process was quick, I got a call within 1-2 hrs after dropping it off on the first day and got the replacement on the second day. The replaced phone screen had a slight yellowish hue but I got used to it and have been using it till now.
Now here comes the bad part. Not sure if it's just my unit, but cell reception is really bad, calls don't always connect the first time, data doesn't work unless you toggle airplane mode and always had to rely on the home and work WiFi and made a habit of downloading media for the commute. I'm based of Bangalore/India on Vodafone network and most of the other people I know on the network don't have this problem. I don't even want to talk about the GPS as it's a joke. So majority of the things I do are not very doable. Heard many people telling flash a custom roms etc, have to say been there done that and always returned to stock rom because of stability, reliability and security(apps from work require stock unrooted encrypted phone). And what pushed me over the edge was the power button stopped working about 6 months ago, and read online that it was a very common issue.
Finally decided to jump ship and ordered the one plus 7 base model. Been using for about 10 days and aside from being a landslide in performance vs the a1, finally able to stream media, phone calls connect the first time, hurray!! The GPS works like it should and it feels like worth while upgrade from the Moto X. I still hate the size of the phone but at least the bezel are not that big.
An advice to phone oems, try to get the basics right other than adding unnecessary redundant features.
Peace
My Mi A1 has definitely had some issues over time but nothing like you described. In fact the Mi A1 is the best smartphone I've ever owned. The Lumia 630 was great (I was a Windows Phone sucker), my Moto G 2015 was quite good (left it mainly because of battery issues) but compared to those - the Mi A1 is excellent. And yet there are still much better phones.
But my Mi A1 is still usable, no cell reception issues as you described.

Might be like i got a bad unit and do remember having bad cell reception in the initial one i had. Getting two bad units in a rows seems unlikely or i just have a really bad luck

In Bangalore/India on VodafoneIN. From what I got from frequency check, it's compatible.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
This phone is a trooper, I put it through the test the other day on AT&T in Orem UT, Provo UT.
This device didn't have any issue Navigating, Charging, Connecting, Texting, Phone Calls and Data in a sweltering 98+ F car with no air conditioning.
AT&T's network at the time 16th of July 2020 was overloaded in the area, I also didn't find any NR frequency's while in AT&T's Innovation network footprint, so I was sadly disappointed not to see the 1G+ speeds.
This phone averaged
~40 Mbps on 5G - peaking at about 60.
~80 on 5G-E (AKA LTE+) - Peaking at 100+
Got me through ordering an Uber to get to Auto Zone to fix my coolant belt.
This phone made it through the day without fully charging with no problems on full-screen brightness for hours on end!
This phone has passed my stress test with flying colors, I just wish AT&T had a better network in the area I broke down, as the specific spot was only pulling ~0.1-5 Mbps. It was good enough to do the Uber request and download an app or two on the new phone.
I was honestly surprised that such a populated area had poor service speeds by I-15 in Orem Utah.
This phone has really surprised me on how good it actually is compared to how good I THOUGHT it would be, especially the camera. I'm very glad I picked this over the OnePlus 8 5G, even though I initially liked that phone a bit more. I could buy higher level Samsung, but this phone is a sweet spot that checks all the boxes for the "phone you live with". For what it's worth, I recommend checking it out- even if on the initial blushes of reviews you might think it inferior. It's better than I've read.
I'm honestly a bit disappointed in this phone. Coming from the Moto G7 Power I find Samsung's software to be clunky and less user friendly. The 5G connection on T-Mobile is pretty good in my area. I'm averaging around 60mbps with peaks over 120. That is compared to about 1/4 to 1/2 that speed on LTE in the same area. Besides the software and the ads that Samsung serves you on its built in apps, I've experienced a few connectivity issues where the phone will have poor or no connectivity or at times it will drop to LTE from 5G when there is a strong 5G signal as verified by my son's One Plus 8. Toggling airplane mode for a few seconds then turning it off seems to "fix" the connection every time, but this is an annoyance that shouldn't be present on a $600 phone. Perhaps a future software update will address the issue. I also find the in screen fingerprint reader to be slow and inconsistent compared to the Moto's back fingerprint reader which was quick and accurate. The face recognition unlock works maybe 10-15% of the time. Most of the time it says No Match.
Honestly, I wish I'd waited for the Moto Edge or spent the extra $100 for another One Plus 8
I can't fault this phone much, other that hating Samsung's Bixby
and a few minor apps or adjustments. I'm on Sprint; the box is labeled for T-mobile,
so it should be good for the imminent absorption of Sprint.
I'm coming from an HTC EVO 4G LTE, which is from 8 or more years ago.
Remember that much: I don't change my device every year or two.
It worked great for my purposes until it started randomly restarting
and developing dark spots which grew on the display.
I rooted that device the day I brought it home, and unlocked the bootloader and unlocked the device
within a week or less. Just my history.
My wife got one of these as replacement of her old Galaxy S5 a week or two ago,
eliminating her troubles of the same random reboots and other issues.
It's a bit larger than I'd like it to be, but I understand that most people
are not like me, and want gigantic displays.
The display is of high quality, to be sure.
I cannot tell if I'm connecting to 5G; I suspect it hasn't yet been implemented here.
I get only an "LTE" icon in the status bar, as well as signal strength of Sprint radio, which is 100%
This is my first day with the phone; I have not yet commuted to work
or otherwise moved around with it.
I'm having trouble with accepting the main button's placement nearly in the middle of the righthand side
of the device, as my previous device placed it at the top. It's awfully easy to hit that button
just when picking up the device. Nevertheless, I've a case/holster arriving soon,
which should help to alleviate that inconvenience and decrease the likelihood of the button press.
I deactivated/uninstalled as much as I could, Googling each as I went along.
Sadly, Bixby has limited ways of disabling, and I don't like Bixby at all.
Samsung's bloatware is actually far more than HTC's was, and they don't
provide options as HTC used to.
As expected, there's an awful lot of Samsung-specific software I don't want.
Most of it can be uninstalled or disabled, but a handful cannot be dealt with.
[EDIT to add:]
So, I find some weird things on the Google Play Store which are shown as installed,
but don't show in any app lists locally: ANT Radio Service/Ant+ Plugins Service, Mobile Installer
(Apparently from SOFTBANK CORP), a couple of others. I get the SoftBank thing,
as they funded Sprint a while back, but ANT Radio -- ? I suppose it's maybe radio
hardware drivers?
I do get a 5G signal at work and home. It's a stronger signal at my workplace,
not so much at home, but throughput is significantly faster than 4G.
The display is indeed a very nice one, far better than my old device.
It's similar to my upgrade of desktop PC's 1920x1200 monitors to a pair
of full-on 4K monitors; that's how much sharper this display appears.
Battery life is fantastic compared to the incredibly-aged HTC EVO 4G LTE
this phone replaced. I could commute 15 minutes to work from 100% charge
on the HTC, and it could be anywhere from 15-35% depleted by the time
I got there, even with all radios off. Today, the A71 got me from a 98% charge
upon going to bed last night, to a final value of 87% battery upon returning home.
That's a significant difference over the 60-some to 40-some percent the HTC
would end my workday with.
5G is incredibly fast, far more so than 4G. I think I got almost 60Mb/s actually got 205Mb/s when
testing from SpeedTest, while 4G gave me around 25Mb/s max.
Even with only 2-3 signal bars out of 6, on a 5G signal, I'm getting as high as
a 25Mb/s throughput, which is better than 4G will do at my home location.
The phone responds well, and maybe a bit too readily, to touch even with
a 9H glass protector on it. There's a setting somewhere for this, and I may
explore its' options. It's not a major detractor to me.
This thing is super-thin as compared to what I've had, which is one major reason
I have a case/holster on the way. I expect it to knock down sensitivity of the
main button, as well as make it easier for me to simply pick up the phone
without pressing a button, along with general handling.
And the holster is is also something of my needs, as I don't like to carry
bulk like this in my pockets.
It seems very well-made, with excellent fit & finish of the outer shell.
It was incredibly annoying to pull off the flimsy and very-well-stuck
protective film on the outer edges. Samsung could easily apply a film
which isn't as well-adhered as the infuriating crap they currently
apply to the device.
It's kinda heavy for its size, which would indicate a rather strong
construction of substantial materials. Then again, maybe it's just
that high-capacity battery inside it.
Camera output is actually extremely good, to someone(me) who owns a Pro-Grade
Canon EOS 5D Mk IV. I'll have to spend time with the optional settings,
but I can say that the Auto-HDR gives quite good results, producing
fairly impressive images with scenes lit unevenly.
The Ultrawide option is also reasonably impressive, delivering perhaps
a wider field of view than my Rokinon 14mm super-ultra-wide lens
on a full-frame camera.
Colors appear true on my 4K calibrated monitors, while sharpness,
dynamic range, noise, and overall accuracy of the scene are also very good.
Overall, the camera and app produce a very high-quality output.
After a few days' use of this phone, I very much like it overall.
The things I'd like to change now will require root access,
so I'll keep checking in here in hopes of some progress.
Hey y'all! Man, it's been forrrreevverrrr since I've been around XDA. I was big in the early 2010s hackin' and crackin' my Note 3 and 4 at the time. From there, Note 5 and forward, cant hack em..so I've been stuck with stock. That said, I've been rocking my note 8 from verizon for quite awhile now and really been completely satisfied with it. Ultimately, I want the big display, and the big battery....so I never really cared about the stylus. So, as you can tell I've been a big note lover.
So, how does that relate to an A71? Well since early 2020, verizon launched a crap software update where the GPS was useless. It drove me nuts. So, I've been on the hunt for a new phone. However, I was repulsed by the 1200 dollar price tag of todays premiere phones.
Cue, the moto stylus G. The launch of the stylus G was right on target for my phone restlessness. So 300 bucks later, and.....well.....it was a 300 dollar phone. Dont get me wrong. The camera is adequate at 48MP, the battery life is great, and the AOSP interface is always great. Worked fine, and it sufficed on one of the two core features I *need*. Now, a quick aside, I'm on consumer cellular, on ATTs network. My note 8 was a verizon purchased and branded phone. Back to the stylus. The moto was great in one respect, it allowed data while on a call. This is an absolute must for me. Period. The other key feature was wifi calling. This, did not work. The hidden menu kept saying that it wasn't provisioned, but consumer cellular said it was. Ok. I considered going back to my Note 8, but it did not allow the data+calling. It would go into 3G mode when on a call. So, that was out.
Now, cue the A71. I had some people tell me how good their non-S samsung phones were, and that they recommended them. I started looking at the A71 since, well I'm used to a flagship phone. Amazon prime day came around, and I thought hard on it for about 3 or 4 hours as 409.99 was staring me in the face. I said screw it, and bought in. I got it two days later, and started setting it up immediately.
First, all my woes were cured with an unlocked phone. I have LTE+, I have VoLTE, I have data in a call, and I have wifi calling. All working, right out of the box. I got software and apps setup, and I'm a power user. I have lots of stuff on there, so many email accounts, so many apps, etc etc etc. And the A71 held up perfectly. Now, it doesn't have a perfectly flat display, which was disappointing. I prefer the tempered glass screen protectors.....so that's a bummer. However, the skinomi on my note 8 has been fine for years, so hopefully they release one for the A71. My city claims its on the 5G map, but that may be ATTs fake-5G crap, which is the LTE+...so I'm not sure if we have true 5G here or not. However, the phone has just impressed me and I can't tell any difference from a flagship phone. For less than half of a Note, I'm quite satisfied and I dont have to worry about stupid monthly payments for the next decade. I do hate the fingerprint scanner though. It was most natural on the back as a dedicated sensor.......I hate this on screen thing. Fun gimmick, but works like 25% of the time. I do have a case with a screen protector though.
