1. Fresh install, preferably dual boot Windows 7
2. Before installing Windows 8, create a new partition for data, and an extra partition for Windows 8, so you can dual boot and access data from both os.
3. You won't need mobo drivers, at least I didn't.
4. Boot method
5. Download the Windows 7 USB tool from the Microsoft site, use that to create a bootable USB.

If i install windows 8

All the files on my windows 7 will be deleted?
When you install 8 over 7, then the files will be on the pc.
But for always, make a backup!
That's true.
The "normal" files stay in place, the windows-files get moved to an old windows folder.
if you want you can make partition and boot on windows 7 or windows 8

Your wrong, you can designated where you want your OS install to go.
Just make 2 partitions and dont install it in windows but when your pc starts. I dual boot Win7 and Win8. Just Make a C: and a D: If you install when the pc starts, it will give you a choice (at least it did for me.)
The only way I could get Windows 8 Dev running correctly was to upgrade from 7 rather than doing a clean install. This way the hodgepodge of drivers I use work, whereas if I tried using those drivers from their original installers that worked in 7, in 8 most of them failed.
Can be installed to another partition

Correct me if I'm wrong! I don't think that's possible, because Windows 8 is still in Developer stage. Guess what, you'll have to find a new Windows 7 installation disk (even a Repair disk will do).
It is possible to downgrade back to 7 , you really don't need to downgrade really though, if you created 2 partitions then just just need to delete the windows 8 partition and merge the unallocated raw partition that you deleted that held windows 8 and merge that partition back to the windows 7 partition, granted if you installed windows 8 with two partitions

Sometimes you might have to run Startup repair since Win8 changes the MBR.
You might have to fix MBR (Keep your windows disc ready )

There is a selection menu in win 8 during boot.
After selecting win 8 it boots directly to 8, if you select win 7 it reboots and boots into win 7.
So after selecting 7 from selection menu if it reboots do not panic.
Install Windows 8 in another partition and you can choo OS to boot.

I don't think you can revert back to Windows 7. You can try contacting Microsoft but I doubt they'll help you in any way...
And to answer your first question (if you have not already found out the answer) all of the files are moved to a folder called "Windows.Old". They're still there.
If you just update, these won't be deleted, but if you format, obviously, them will be.

Just go to Create And Format Hard Disk Partitions and shrink your windows 7 partition and make a new partition for windows 8 with the unallocated space or add a new hard drive. After that make a bootable usb/dvd of windows 8 using Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool and install windows 8 on any other partition you made. There is an option in the setup to select which partition you want to install it on if you boot from the cd/usb. After that you can use easy bcd to create a boot menu but windows developer preview will automatically create one for you but I prefer easy bcd since it's faster.

Allready done that, i can see my wirelles device but can't install the driver..that method is not confirmed in final version of windows 8..
UP ....nobody?
Well..i got it working..my mastake was that i upgraded from windows 7 and not doing a fresh install of windows 8...
Almost have it working, but whenever i reboot, i need to delete my wifi and readd it and it will work (pain, but im starting to like the windows 8 on this compared to windows 7).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264742&page=7
I got the patches from post #64. You need to boot windows 8 into command line to copy these files. It was the only way I could get them copied anyway (forgot which file it was, but one would not copy unless I did it from the command line).
ok, just need to disable it then enable it and it works...

[DISCUSSION] Installing windows 8 pro

Hey guys, i looked around and couldnt find a thread so here's one.
I want to know, how did you all install windows8 pro? Did you do a clean install or installed without wiping anything?
I read on the internet that you can't install windows with a full wipe. After you do that, Microsoft blocks the activation of product key even if it's legit. MS says that windows 8 pro is only meant as an upgrade. What the f*** does this mean? Why is Microsoft having any objections on how we use something that we have bought legally?
Here's one article.
Let me know your thought on this. Did you face such an error while installing Windows?
I installed windows 8 without wiping. When im in windows 8 i backup everything i want then proceed to reset it to factory settings which it'll clean the c drive. Never had any problems with the activation. Oh i bought the online pro version which cost $39.99.
However the only problem i have is everytime it reboots my mouse will not work forcing me to restart again to get my mouse working. Otherwise its good.
// Edit:
Forgotten to mention it was an upgrade from windows 7.
I also did make the downloaded W8 installation into iso and make it into usb installation via windows 7 usb tool and install from the usb on top of windows 8 for a clean installation and everything works well too.
If problem still persist you may try to install windows 7 and upgrade from there then while you're in windows 8 do a factory reset which doesn't require you to insert the cd or usb for the reset (+1 for that feature though). That's just me~

Wtfhx, what does an upgrade even mean? Are we supposed to install win8 from the desktop of windows7? Or boot the PC from a CD and install from there? If it is the later, then how will it even know what is my operating system?

I installed windows 8 from windows 7 desktop as the installation was downloaded into my c drive. However i also tried installing from an usb from a direct boot into the usb (im sure it'll work the same as CD). Upgrading can only means you must have an existing OS such as windows 7 and install windows 8 from the CD inside windows 7.
Regarding to your problem about the activation caused by not an upgrade, i would suggest you to install windows 7 without activating it and run the windows 8 installation from the CD inside windows 7. I have not encountered your problem before but to troubleshoot it you may have to go extra length with what i have suggested. (Doesn't mean it'll 100% work)
Other ways to troubleshoot if the above fail is to try the usb installation with Windows 7 USB Tool. Before you use it you must turn your windows 8 installation cd into ISO with freewares like ImgBurn.
Not sure if any of these will help you but if both the solutions above fail, you may need to contact Microsoft or the dealer you purchased your copy of windows 8 about it.
// Edit
Wait are you having problem with the installation or you're just asking is there any problem with the installation?

You may do either. The installation handles everything. At some people, it may request your Windows 7 key and other times it detects the installation automatically.
I am not having any problem. I read that if you install windows8 using a clean install Microsoft won't let you activate the product key.
Just a question, did you click install Windows just like you'd any other game?

In that case, there is no problem whatsoever with my copy of installation downloaded from the Microsoft. Both installing from windows 7 desktop (Upgrading and yes it's like installing games) and usb booting installation (Considering it did not load my current OS first so this doesn't count as upgrading, i might be wrong), complete without the activation problem. Not sure about the physical copy but my guess is the result will still be the same. Others might have bought a bad copy of the installation disc, i don't know.
The best thing is, once you have windows 8 installed without any problem.. you do not need the installation files anymore. Reinstalling windows 8 can be done easily.

I did almost the same thing. I downloaded it from Microsoft and chose keep nothing , it loaded and I started with a clean laptop. I did not burn an iso or download it to an USB drive, I used the download.
Before I loaded win8 I used double driver and copied all my drivers to a backup, just in case I had an issue, I also did a full backup of everything else. I'm really enjoying it, but there are still a few places I use secure wifi that don't recognize windows 8 as being a valid os, they also dont recognize the windows defender as being a valid antivirus software, but otherwise I've been impressed. I was going to purchase a new laptop with a touch screen but I don't have any reason to now.

i did an upgrade without getting anything over from win 7...
Just to preface, Windows had marked my system as not being genuine (I know this because Microsoft security essentials wouldn't allow me to install it). I updated on top of Windows 7 since didn't want to install all of my apps all over again. I download the update and installed it right from my hard drive as opposed to a usb or dvd, although I did make a backup copy of the windows 8 file just in case.
Everything is okay except it takes a while (roughly 15 minutes) for windows to recognize my Intel graphics chip right away. The screen will just be black after the Windows logo appears. Also, if you update directly from your hard drive, make sure you delete your temporary files because windows will keep the old OS and files. After clearing mine I freed up 32 GB!
*Update*
After installing windows 8 and enabling then installing the windows updates, my laptop boots up just fine now ( and mighty quick I add). As others have said, I don't believe windows cares if your version of windows 7 is genuine or not.

Hi,
Thought I would share my experience:
I downloaded and installed the upgrade version. I was running Windows 7 Pro before.
After downloading the files, I wrote it to a disk and decided to do what I did for Win7, manual format and repartition my disks (I didnt trust the "Keep Nothing" option )
Unfortunately, I forgot I had a dynamic disk and my Win7 partition was booting off it - I formatted my C:\ and was met with a "Cannot create partition... / cannot install windows on dynamic disk"... it was a long painful process that took me most of the day to fix. Also, there is a bug with installing Win8 with multiple hard drives booting from disk or at least I had some trouble with it until I detached 2 of them for the install to progress.
After all that, the key wouldn't activate because it wasn't technically an upgrade... *face palm*
So, in went the Win7 disk, reinstalled and activated. After initial boot, I put in the Win8 CD and used the wizard and selected "Keep Nothing" ( At this point I couldn't care less)
All activated and now enjoying the system
Moral of the story:
- Stay away from dynamic disks on the boot partition, it'll warn you if you try - heed the warning!
- Multiple harddrives may cause issues with the install so you might need to disable them through bios or disconnect them from the mobo
- For me the Key only activated via an install, it wouldn't recognize it when I formatted C:\ through custom install.
- Did I mention? STAY AWAY FROM DYNAMIC DISKS!!!

Mine activated first try no problem
It's only the box copies that are sold in retail stores that are upgrade-only packages. A few will only sell full retail versions of Windows 8. These versions are more likely a hundred bucks more than the upgrade version. The copy downloaded from the Microsoft Store are full Windows 8 Pro copies.
What? Are you sure??

I upgraded my notebook from within 7 no problem. My desktop i bought the upgrade, and installed from a USB that the upgrade advisor program created. However i formatted the HD before installing and did a clean install and it never asked for any proof that i had windows 7 on my PC previously. Its fully activated and fine.
I have heard that in some countries it will even let you upgrade a pirate copy of 7 if the upgrade advisor program doesn't flag it.

Win 7 win 8 dual boot

Sorry if a similar thread is already there
I hv a Vaio (vpcsb18gg) with windows 7 build in.....
how do i install win 8 with dual boot option...i hv already made a empty partion for installin win 8
thanks in advance
Rather than wasting your time with posting (including an apology) and our time with responding to it, have you considered just using the search feature, or a general web search? People have been dual-booting Windows versions for, oh, the last 18 years at least. It's not hard to find info about.
Just install Win8 to the second partition. Why'd you even need to ask? Win8 uses the same bootloader as Win7 and Vista, so it will auto-detect them, but this works even with Vista or later and XP or earlier, which don't use the same loader (so long as you install the newer OS first).

All you pretty much need is the windows 8 iso on a disc or boot-able USB drive, when you buy windows 8 you should get in a disc or you can find the windows 8 .iso and enter in your key once the installation is complete
1. Use this to put the iso on a disc or usb drive: http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
2. Power off your computer
3. On your computer, when your booting it gives you an option to boot from cd or usb (normally press your F keys or another special key when booting up to give you the option, i think for a vaio its F11 or F12)
4. Just keep clicking next till it asks you if you want "uprgrade" or "coustom" click "coustom" it should give you the option to install to that partition if it doesn't make sure your partition is 20gb and is formatted as ntfs
If you want to watch a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_p4rCyYGW0 (Skip to 6:32 unless you want to watch the partition part) it may not be windows 8 retail but its thee exact same process.
Any more questions reply or PM me
Edit: When you use the upgrade assistance it downloads the windows 8 you want just click "download pro (or any other version)" put the .iso in on a disk or usb

You can use installation media (a USB flash drive or DVD) to install a new copy of Windows, perform a clean installation, or reinstall Windows 10.
After you've created the installation media, you can reset or reinstall Windows. To learn more, go to Recovery options in Windows 10.

Windows S mode is locked in BIOS i think. I create new USB, remove all partition, create, new, format whole disk and after fresh install I have again Windows Home with S mode. Last time I had to unlock bios to perform install Windows pro.
Another method is download iso, extract it, remove Windows home image and pack it again, create USB and fresh install.
It worked few year ago and I believe it will work now.
Edit: Removing other Windows image from installaction doesn't work.
Edit 2: I don't remember how to mod and unlock bios. But after few full clean reinstalls I break S mode without ms login. Next I upgraded OS version with change product key (from ebay). I'm not sure it's the right way for my pcs, but it's enough for my clients. I think the only right way is mod bios and unlock slic.
