Google Voice with the N4 on Tmobile - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is anyone currently routing all of their calls/texts/voicemails through Google voice (GV) on Tmobile?
I currently have Sprint and have integrated my number into GV (my GV number and my original Sprint number are one and the same) and I'll be switching from Sprint to Tmobile once I can get my hands on an N4. My problem is I'm not sure whether to port my number out of GV/Sprint and into Tmobile or if I should just get a brand new Tmobile number, add that to GV, and have GV just route calls/texts placed to my current number to the new Tmobile number. The only issue I'm aware of with GV is the lack of support for MMS.
Also, I sporadically have some issues on Sprint with missing calls where they show up in my GV call log but never make it through to my phone. I really like how GV can be accessed from any browser and how it logs history of my texts and calls so it would be nice to have these features still but maybe not worth the few quirks, bugs, and lack of MMS.
Can anyone comment on using GV with their Tmobile number? Worth it? Not worth it?

Google voice works fine on T-Mobile.

Actually, it depends. If you are using a T-mobile prepaid 4G plan, you can't use call forwarding. This means you can't use GV for your voicemail for your T-mobile number. In that case, if you use the full version of GV (not the limited voicemail service), then you can have voicemail and texting for your GV number. But if someone calls your T-mobile number, your GV voicemail will not be used. So it really depends on how you are trying to use it (and if you are using prepaid or not).

I use it all the time, the above is true. If you get a monthly plan its no issue. Download the app and you can select it to always call from your GV# or prompt you or never. You should have no issues with it on T-mo, the only difference is you will probably have two numbers now, but keep using the GV# like normal after you set up.

So let me get this straight...
Setup:
Google Voice #: 111-111-1111
New T-Mobile #: 222-222-2222
Let's assume I have added my new T-Mobile number to my Google Voice account, and have only shared my Google Voice number with people.
I can setup my phone to dial out using my Google Voice account. I will also need to replace the default text messaging app with Google Voice.
Any outgoing calls/texts from my phone will show up on other people's phones as 111-111-1111
All calls to 111-111-1111 will automatically be routed to 222-222-2222.
Voicemail scenario 1: Post-Paid plan
If someone calls 111-111-1111 and I don't answer my phone, do they get sent to 222-222-2222's voicemail system by default?
If I deactivate voicemail on 222-222-2222, will calls to 111-111-1111 eventually reach the Google Voice voicemail, or does it just ring forever?
Is there an option to automatically forward voicemails to Google Voice (a la Sprint)?

If someone calls 111-111-1111 and I don't answer my phone, do they get sent to 222-222-2222's voicemail system?
What happens if you disable voicemail on 222-222-2222? Rings forever?
I take it from your previous post that this is where you run into issues with the Google Voice Voicemail, correct?

I can only speak for my G2x using a post-paid plan, but I have three fields I can set on my phone under Options -> Call settings -> Call forwarding: Busy, Unanswered, and Unreachable (along with "Always Forward"). Each of those has enable/disable and a separate number. In my case, I'm testing out GrooVe IP, since I have poor signal strength at home, so I have Busy and Unanswered set to my Google Voice voicemail number and Unreachable set to my main Google Voice number (so if I'm at home on wifi with no signal, GrooVe IP will ring me). That all works so my voicemail is via Google Voice and not T-Mobile.

Since you have Sprint/GV integrated, if you want to cancel Sprint service you will have some extra steps. Cancel Sprint integration, port your Sprint# to GV, then forward the GV calls to the new TMo#.

If you're prepaid like me you can just call them and have them disable your voicemail. Then as long as people only have your GV number you will get all voicemails to GV.

Why not just get a Google voice number and tell everyone you know to use it instead of your carrier number.

call forwarding not an option, google voice will still have full functionality?

havent gotten my n1 yet so excuse the question on this
tmobile has me on flexpay, calling later to see about migrating to post but to be honest, credit sucks so i dont see it happening.
the problem with flexpay is, they do not allow call forwarding.
so if i am using the google voice app/dialer, (have fav5, was going to setup the google voice as one for calling to it to not use minutes)
if i setup google voice to forward to my cell, give my google voice number out from now on and have people update my phone number to gvoice. could i just entirely bypass the need to use call forwarding this way
correct me if im wrong, but the google voice app will take over as my dialer, contacts, etc. so anytime i make a call, it will go through gvoice and anyone with callerid would see my gvoice number. so unless i give my tmo number out or someone doesnt update my number, i would never have a call come in on my tmo number except gvoice forwarded calls..... right?
do i really need callforwarding if i'm going to take on my google number as my new primary #?
also this would allow me to drop my unlimited text messaging as well since txt msgs would all go through gvoice instead of tmo? (i read this one elsewhere and just want to confirm that would work)

[Q] Google Voice on TMob 4G Monthly....

Hey guys this I read through a couple of existing threads on this, but either the question was not answered or it wasn't explained correctly. maybe someone can assist me.
this is what I am doing. I will be switching from Verizon, to T-Mobile's 4G monthly prepaid plan ($70 plan) and purchasing the Nexus 4 to save a lot of money, and for other obvious reasons regarding always getting the latest android software....
My concern and confusion:
I would like to keep my existing telephone number, so I have read that I can just port over my verizon number to the T-Mobile 4G prepaid plan...this is not the issue, my concern is I would like to continue using my Google Voice service which I already have..However currently use GV on Verizon as my voicemail service which is great for VM transcripts and marking calls as SPAM.
So on one hand I read threads that say "tmobile prepaid will not let you forward calls to your GV and use it as a VM service"
then I have read this is not true, that you have to call TMO support, have them disable your TMO voicemail, then you can run GV as your new VM service with no issues
Then I have heard none of this is correct and you have to PORT over your existing number to Google Voice, and then go to Tmobile and get a new number with the 4G prepaid plan, then add this number to your Google voice ported number and you will have Google Voice as your voicemail service.....
I am so confused as to what actually is true, and what steps i should take in order to make Google Voice work ONLY as my Voicemail while Im on the Tmobile 4G prepaid plan......I hope this made sense. thanks!
In your case, it sounds like you are not using a real GV number but you are using Google Voice just for the voicemail. In that case, you can't use their voicemail service if you just ported to T-mobile 4G since call forwarding is disabled. If you want to use the full version of GV which would give you GV voicemail, you can port to GV and get a new number with T-mobile. Only do this if you want to use the GV app for texting as well. The only problem with this method is you don't get MMS and you can't use the native messaging app (unless you want to use text-forwarding which is ugly). Personally, I don't think I would switch to a full GV just for voicemail because of the hassles of using the GV app for texting.

thanks for your response! and you are correct, I am not using a real GV number, I am just using them as a voicemail service. and I can see how losing MMS is a problem as I use that feature a lot....Well I guess thats the deal breaker, PORT over completely to GV and get voicemail transcripts and the online desktop access but lose MMS and the native SMS capabilities.....OR just use Tmobiles standard VM service and hope that TMO adds call forwarding to their prepaid plan in the near future, or GV gets MMS capabilities....either way thanks for the information looks like I will just use TMO VM service for now.

[Q] Clarification about GV + App for wifi/data calling?

Hi, I'm going to do Tmobiles 100mins+5g plan and need some clarification on how the GV+ grooveIP/SIP works that I'm reading about here and other places. Answers would be greats, but If someone could provide a link to this info, that would be great too. I will be porting my number from Verizon. Despite im tech savvy, i'm a novice on phones.
1. Is it possible focus all calls and text via minutes, wifi, 4G to one number (Tmobile#)?
2. Do I have to have 2 numbers (Tmobile + GV)?
If I have to have 2 numbers
3. Is it better if I port my Verizon number (friends + business contacts) to GV or Tmobile.
4. I read that I can use GrooveIP/SIP to do outgoing calls using data...... will reciever see GV# or Tmobile#? What if I want to use minutes?
5. When incoming calls, does the sender have to use my GV# or Tmobile# so I can use data? minutes?
6. When incoming voice/ text message, does the sender have to use GV# or Tmobile# so I can use data? cellular text?
7. When outgoing voice/text message, do I use GV# or Tmobie#?,, which number will reciever see?
If I can get the answer to these, (even better with depth) it would be great. Thanks!
1. I'm not sure what you're asking. If you want to forward your GV number to your TMo number you would be using minutes as far as I know.
2. Yes, you will have two numbers.
3. Which number will you be using the most? If you're using Google Voice and Groove IP for most of your calls to avoid going over your 100 minutes, I would port your Verizon number to GV.
4. If you use the Groove IP dialer they will see your google voice number. If you want to use your T-Mo minutes, you would use the stock dialer.
5.To avoid minutes your caller would call the Google Voice number. This would be a VOIP call. The T-mo number would be cellular.
6. Same as above, your t-mo number would go to the stock messaging app, your GV number would go to the Google Voice app.
7. Same as above. If you text out of the stock messaging app, it would be your T-Mo number, out of Google Voice it would be from your Google Voice number.

Using tmo voicemail with google voice

I would like to use Google Voice's voicemail instead of tmobile's since my tmo number is a throw away and I've never given it out. I have tried changing the forwarding numbers, but it won't let me change anything. I get an error saying the network won't let me. I have also tried changing my voicemail number (the one that is dialed when you long press #1 for vm speeddial) but I get a similar message saying the netowrk won't allow it.
I have discovered this xposed module http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2106490 seems to be on the right track, since it does edit the number registered to the sim card, but it doesn't allow you to edit the voicemail number registered to the sim card.
Does anyone know of a way to do this? The only partial solution I've found is by adding my Google Voice number to my sim card so I can dial 1# and get through, but I would like Google Voice to replace tmobile's voicemail altogether. This still does not forward callers to Google Voice's voicemail unless I set my phone to airplane mode.
Are you using a pay as you go plan? If so, those don't support call forwarding (which is used for Google voicemail). If you are, you can call up T-Mobile and ask them to disable your voicemail. That should allow Google voice to pick up you're voicemail after so many rings.

Yeah, I am...so I guess that's the issue. If I switch to a monthly 4G plan would that also allow call forwarding?

Yes. I'm on the monthly plan and it allows call forwarding. But, like I said, you could achieve a similar effect by having TMO disable your voicemail all together, and google voice will pick up your voicemail after so many rings.

Thanks very much, I'll give that a shot! This has been driving me crazy since I switched to Tmo in February, and I've just dealt with it until now.

I'm on TMoUS with the N4 and use G Voice for my voicemail. It does work fine and I can just use the in-phone voicemail setup to switch my VM carrier. I do have a post-paid monthly 4g plan though. It sounds like you already have G Voice set to forward your number to the TMo number so that's fine.
I don't think that disabling the TMo voicemail will work by itself because I don't think it will fall back to the previous number. It would probably just ring or just end the call. You could also just use G Voice for your dialer too and run everything over data.

Google Voice automatically sends to voicemail after 25 seconds. I learned this when I was using VoIP on the $30 pre-paid plan. Disabling TMO voicemail is necessary as it picks up before 25 seconds.

I would, but I don't always have a reliable mobile data signal, so I get a lot of missed/dropped calls. I'd love to be able to just drop tmo voice service entirely, though, and get 100% free voice calls!
I called Tmo and had my voicemail disabled the other day, and I'm still not able to set gv as the primary voicemail or set a forwarding number. I still get the 'contact your carrier' message. when I try to set gv voicemail, and I get a network/sim error when I try to change the forwarding numbers. I got a new sim recently, but I can rule that out because it's the same error with both sim cards in, as well as with the sim removed.
After installing Google voice, did you go into the phone, click setup from there and then select voicemail? Then change carrier to Google voice and select setup. I just use the app/widget instead of trying to dial from the phone to check for voicemail.
I have no idea about forwarding calls though.
If it doesn't go through, maybe try and un install them re install GV

If you're on prepaid, you'll never be able to set up forwarding. However, Google voicemail should still work properly if you have disabled your T-mo voicemail and configured the gvoice app. It will just take a long time before it picks up.

Voice mail on Verizon?

I can't figure out how to setup any sort of voicemail on my 6P. If prefer to have Google voice handle my voicemail, but so far I can't get it to work. I can overall the app and set it up through the voicemail settings, but when calling my phone it still says I don't have voicemail setup.
I've used GV for years with my other Android phones, this is the first time I've had an issue.
I've seen suggestions to forward my number to my GV number through Verizon settings, but I don't want to use that phone number I just want the voicemail.
Had anyone figured this out?
Alternately I'd go with stock Verizon voicemail, non-visual.

You have to set up No answer forwarding so Google can get the call and manage the VM.
You set up no answer forward to your GV number and it works.

Thanks for the reply, can you tell me how to do that? Just need a little more details, never done it before.
Edit: I figured out the forwarding part, just wish there was a way to not have to go thru two full ring cycles. It rings my vzw number then my GV number then I get to voicemail.
It also causes my home PC to ring with the Google voice number...

*71[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on Conditional Forwarding, which should transfer calls to your Google Voice number when your Verizon phone is busy or unanswered after 3 to 6 rings.
*90[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on Busy Transfer, which transfers all calls that would hear a busy signal to your Google Voice number.
*92[Your Google Voice number] -- This turns on No Answer Transfer, which transfers all calls unanswered after 3 to 6 rings to your Google Voice number.
Now you need to login to your GV.
Go to settings -> Voicemail and texts.
Now set up your greeting, etc.
Now go to phones and add your number (Verizon).
Now click "edit" then show advanced.
Look at the various options.
The one you are really interested in "Go Straight To VM".
This will send all your calls on GV straight to VM.
You want this so the Verizon caller does not get additional rings on GV.

I used to have Verizon VVM but didn't really use it that much so when I switched to the 6P I canceled it online. For the next couple of days when I got a voicemail I wouldn't get a notification but I would get a text with a string of characters. Then I called Verizon and they put the VVM cancel though and since then I get the normal voicemail icon. I can dial into voicemail from there and listen to them as normal.
I don't really miss visual voicemail, but I don't get a ton of them to begin with.
