[Q] Rooted devices can't upload photospheres? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Saw a post on G+ that indicates rooted phones can't upload photospheres, anybody know the reasoning behind this?
https://plus.google.com/u/0/101565930260920516332/posts/Gydemafucwn
Also, does anybody know where I can pull up that photosphere map and be able to click on the image links?

Maybe to prevent users messing with the photosphere itself? (i.e. change/modify location data)

I think it could make sense.
if users could access internal data they could replace the pictures in cache (or maybe with some "hacks") and you could see the colosseum in New York in Google Maps Pictures

Oh well,
I think almost the whole XDA population has just said goodbye to uploading photosphere.

Would this just mean that rooted devices can't upload Photosphere pics to Google Maps? You may still be able to upload to Google +.
If it's just Google Maps, I wouldn't be too concerned. If you can't upload them anywhere that would suck.

Yes I believe this is just uploading to Google Maps, as they dont want things messing up for the world to see. Google plus should be ok.

Indeed, it doesn't care about Google+ uploads, as there obviously is no real need to protect the location data in that circumstance.

There will be a patch or workaround though I'm sure someone wants to put the Colosseum in NYC haha

LMAO. :good:

Can anyone confirm that rooted device cannot upload to Google maps? I am actually holding up rooting because i am going to China next month and would like to take a couple pictures there and uploading to Google Maps (and the lack of stable ROMs).

I have uploaded photospheres to G+ and I am rooted. Can view them on their no problems. Not tried maps tho

Thanks but i think it has been established that Google+ works. Can you try share it via Maps?

Well if you check temporary unroot in superuser app, I still can't upload on maps...So it has to be another way..somehow...

Use View on Google Maps Desktop
At google -dot- com -slash- maps -slash- views one can upload PhotoSpheres from rooted phones. I did some today from my rooted Nexus 4. I don't know if they will get accepted onto maps as yet. But they do at least function as PhotoSpheres when viewed in the browser which is what I was looking for.

Google Drive Discussion

So for all of those who have tried out google drive, what do you think?
I have no issues dumping drop box but for now, I won't. It feels really clunky to me but I'm sure that will change over time.
My biggest beef with it right now, I can't select which folders to sync even though I picked a specific folder on the desktop G Drive app, it still shows up on android and there is no way to hide it. Very annoying that it syncs stuff that I don't want to see.
Secondly, I don't like how you can't save files from the G Drive app on android directly to the phone like you can with drop box. I use drop box heavily because I transfer files to and from my phone quite a bit (.zip files for flashing mods/tweaks/roms) This keeps me from having to plug in my phone every time I need to transfer files to and from my computer.
With G drive, I'm not able to do this. Unless I'm just overlooking it?
The first issue is just an annoyance, the second is a deal breaker for me.
I'll still use it for now but I'll still be utilizing drop box for the time being.
Anyone else have any thoughts on it?
I'd like to see the ability to auto upload pics like Dropbox has. This has saved me a few times!

Do you use google+ at all? I have that to auto sync all my pictures. Kind of redundant to use that feature for drop box so I don't.
I like to use G+ instead of drop box for folder because it automatically uploads it into picasa.
I still waiting on the email to say my Google Drive is ready.

G+/Picasa resizes them to 3MP (2048*1536) though, and with heavier compression too, you're losing a lot of detail if that's your only backup.
My problem with Google Drive is simple: I've never touched it, and only just heard about it yesterday, and yet somehow, mysteriously--nay, magically--it has appeared on my list of previously installed apps on the Play Store.
Screw that tactic, Google. You have the whole front page of the store to hawk your wares. Don't muddy my own library.

considering I have used G Docs regularly since 2004-2005, I really don't care what else they do to the Google Drive as long as they don't get rid of that basic functionality that they have always had and have done better than all competitors.
I do like the idea of uploading pictures, but do agree I would like it to be automatic like Dropbox. I realize G+ does it as well, but with pictures, especially if they are of children like 90% of mine are, can you have too many backups? I have my pictures uploaded everywhere.
It would be nice if all the Google products storage was all merged into drive. Access to your Picasa/google + photos, google music etc... just add all the space together.

I agree. That would be awesome to have everything in one place.
hmm
I just replaced my dropbox with Gdrive,.. w/o having used it at all, just thought I'd trust good ol' google. I'm seeing some quirks so far when it comes to syncing folders as it is still showing "sync" icon next to some files when the tray icon actually states that the syncing is complete. Definitely dropbox performs better at this moment imo.

The trick is getting garmin maps work on android devices... I'll post full details tomorrow (no guarrantee though )
HTC location doesn't have highly detailed maps of all the countries...
Garmin has those, but it's not fully available on android
Offline navigation is a plus too! Garmin have that.
But i'm using another app to read the Garmin maps... As i said, i'll post all the details later...
Keep posting guys! I wanna see more people interested in this

Having offline interests me a lot! I use Google Navigation and Google Maps right now but takes awhile to boot and locate. Not having to use data, I'm hoping, will lead to faster performance. Plus, I'm sure this could be used in other devices as well? I'm looking at my WiFi-only tablet as a 10" GPS if this works out =)

It will work on every android device...
Performance will be a little slower on our dz (if you put details on max). But on faster devices, its really smooth
I think it would be awesome if this post got to android general forum
EDIT: i won't post the guide tomorrow, as i need a pc to make the guide (i have to check some things while writing the guide).
So maybe thursday afternoon, or friday.

you obviously don't have knowledge in those apps.
Navitel is the app that will be used for navigation. but navitel DOES NOT support .img maps. it does support .nm2 maps, and the key is to know how to convert those maps, and get rid of the errors...

To be honest, I think it's accurate because my devices didn't show any programs acting suspiciously. A lot of apps are using permissions that would be appropriate for them, however, if they're sending data to suspicious sources, like Facebook app sending my data to some server in middle-of-nowhere Russia then I'd double check and I don't think the app has this kind of feature (not from what I can tell from a 10 minute use of the app). However, with the results I got from my Galaxy S3 and my Nexus 10 I'd say that the app is detecting that my apps are using only the permissions I've granted them. Beyond that, I can't say for sure--not without using a third-party service like http://mobilesandbox.org/
cool

We are updating the app, soon you will see lot more information.. Thank.
Now I know my app working in Nexus 10

I created my first ever Android app to download free piano sheet music in PDF format

Hi guys,
This isn't necessarily a Nexus 5 app per se, but I do own the device and I love it.
I envision people using this app on their tablets to download sheet music and be able to play it right away.
If you don't own an android tablet, you can use it on your phone and I've added share functionality so that the PDFs can be sent right away from within the app, to say DropBox or other cloud file services so that they can be viewed on other devices or even printed.
If you guys play piano, let me know what you think, or maybe just spread the words to your friends that do.

It's a pain I tried all sorts to get it to work finally found a site and now have it on my u11 aswel I use Google photos aswel but only to view pics online htc gallery is amazing
Google pictures is pretty cool. I went to Italy and took around 500 pictures and the app put a gallery together for me showing in maps when I traveled and each location is in its own category. So when we traveled from Florence to Siena it showed that on the map and all Siena photos were together.

Have you guys using the gallery APK, noticed that when you delete photos, they come back after a restart of the phone? On mine they show deleted in gallery, but if I go in es explorer, they are actually still there. And then show again in gallery after a restart.
Would be good to ask for Car and Music too, I can't live without these 2 and I am obliged to root to get them

it's not happening due copyright...aka iPhone infringements.
Apple complained that Samsung/HTC/Sony/etc ... were using Apple's intelectual Property "Gallery" and is banned to use it, or pay to use it.
Samsung paid to keep using it, but it sucks anyways.
there are way better Apps out there that manages medias, there fancy ones, there are simple ones.
I like the Google Photo, simple easy and it auto sync.
Just flash venom custom rom viperu I have all the htc apps still, gallery, car, people widget, htc music...all of em!!!!
I have installed all the available Apk versions of Gallery but they are unstable.
