And after more than 3 years my Galaxy S is still the best! - Galaxy S I9000 General

I was in a store today and tried all kinds of the new smartphones out there. And I walked out giggling. Damn, after 3 years there is no phone out there, even with their quad core this super Gpu that, which i would take over my Galaxy s.
The S2 and S3 are impressive, but are big as hell, also quite expensive. The Nexus phones always impressed me, but they don't take external sd cards or swappable battery.
I never liked HTC phones either.
And with the latest CM10 and semaphore kernel my old Galaxy s still can compete with the latest products and still looks beautiful and even better than the new stuffs.
And don't get me started to compare it with Iphones.
Talking about durability, my little boy thrown my Galaxy S couple hundreds times on the floor, and it's still ain't broke yet. Meanwhile i saw tens of broken iphones. Funny that the people normally still walk around with a broken display, because they can't afford to buy another overpriced phone.
You can say I'm a Galaxy s fanboy, and after 3 years it didn't change. That's something isn't it?
Thank you all devs for making this phone such a fun thing to play with!
From Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, ICS and now Jelly Bean... it was a heck of ride.

same here, ive had my s1 for nearly 3 years, not used much for last year as i've had an s2 and now an s3 but the s1 gotta be better than both, kids been playing with it for last year but still in great condition and not too much difference from an s2 or an s3

Phone is legend indeed, but 3 years? LoL Don't think so mate. It was for sale as from June 2010, that makes it 2 years and 5 months max. You just added 7 months out if nothing? LoL
7 months in smartphone world is allot you know
I still use mine everyday to, my wife is using the SGS 3, and the Note II is on my Christmas list
I'll use it until it stops working =)

I had mine since the first day it was released in the UK at Carphone Warehouse in August 2010. Coming off the G1 all it took was to see it switched on in the shop to indulge in a bit of impulse buying.
Upgraded to a Galaxy Note 5.3" six months ago and then only used the S to play with CM builds. Sold my Note a couple of weeks ago to get the cash for the Nexus 4 and been back to my trusted S and I cant believe how decent it feels for an everyday phone running CM10 nightlies.
As much as I liked the Note I just never got attached to it like I did with the S.

I couldn't agree more. I bought my Galaxy S second hand more than a year ago just to see what Android was like and I have been happy since. Off-course it needs some tweaking but mine is running very fast at the moment (Semaphore kernel + X-Bean 3.0 + script). I did try other Android phones from friends and in shops but their overall size is just too big and they seem very fragile. If my phone would fail I really don't know what phone currently on the market I'd go for. Quadcore sounds nice but the screens are just too big.

Thanks to the developers the phone is still alive...without them it wouldn't have been the same...I would have bought a new phone by now if it wasn't for them. :good:

the best phone

What happens to us regular folk who don't buy a new phone every year?
answer: We thrive in our galaxy and travel to the EVEN bigger one (III) after another cycle has passed!
Damn nice, its not available here yet
I ordered a SGS2, sold my SGS1 to someone at work but my SGS2 was delayed (unit shortages) and I am now stuck with an old Motorola flip phone =/
how do you guys even afford to buy a new phone every half a year
I'll wait for the next Google phone. No more touchwiz crap for me, thanks. No more begging for updates.
Also, while it's clearly a better phone, the differences are too small. ppi density was poor already, now with the bigger screen they should have gone for 540 x 960, like the Sensation.

Really clever guy would have sold SGS 1 just before SGS launch £250 .
Bought O2 PAYG and if it was as many are unlocked sold on Ebay £500 .
Buy PAYG O2 £399 net transfer cost £49 .
If i had thought about it i would have bought more than one O2 for onward sale .
SGS2 has a flashing counter on boot screen better stick with SGS 1

i just got my brand new sgs a couple of weeks ago, after selling my old htc legend, so i'll stick with it for at least one year from now... after i'll master the tehnic of rooting it and all the customizing stuff, maybe then i'll consider upgrading to the new sgs2, but right now i consider it useless for me
only thing i miss from my legend is the sense ui, definetly much more user friendly than the touchwiz stuff, this is the main reason i consider rooting my sgs, i'll just wait for a stable release of sense ui for the sgs and then i'll be completly sattisfied with this awesome phone
heads off to SGS 2 thread tho. no need to make everyone jealous

It is too bad that many of the good devs are jumping ship before we get mature Gingerbread releases and mods.
In a way despite all the whinging we see on here about Samsung they are supporting the device for longer than most of the XDA devs.
The doomsayers were saying Samsung would bail on SGS 2.3 given the SGS2, when in fact it was XDA devs that bailed fast upon SGS2 release. Not that they don't have the right and I appreciate the work they did while they were here.
Lol SGS3 comes out late this year... What will people do who just upgraded to SGS2?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I jut upgraded to 2.3.3 a coupla weeks ago, and I'm content to stay with a 90% cutting edge phone that still outperforms my old iOS Applecrap. It's kinda like having an E46 M3 (last version) versus the the new one. A few performance mods and you're just as good as the stock new one, and most non-gearheads wouldn't notice or care anyway. They'll just be impressed with the notion you own a fast Bimmer.
The money in my case would be better spent on a Honeycomb tablet as a companion to the SGS. Ones like the Asus Transformer look promising in terms of price, performance and battery life over the Asus G50VT laptop I'm typing this on.
I'm not begrudging anyone heading to the next level. Hell, Ill even admit jealousy. It's just that we bought 2 of these since the summer of last year and the shine hasn't worn of just yet, especially since moving to GB. And by the Christmas season, somebody will have raised the bar again. But I'll be still thinking that these are really just phone with a computer along for the ride. And I never upgraded my computers this fast. And stir in that the combined monthly bill is nearly $200 over the initial cost of the damn things. Yup, I'll wait.

Wrong forum for posting about the sgs2 i think...
But since its here, I dont see the point to buy a sgs2 right now unless youre a developer. In the other case it just means having to go back to stock roms and miss out on all the awesome developments that were made for the SGS.
Id rather wait to jump ships until such developments are being made on SGS2 aswell.

Could the Note last you a good 5 years?

Before upgrading to the next best top model? All I see coming in the next few years are phones with more cores, better camera, the only thing I would replace my Note with is probabaly with a bigger screen.
I'll be happy if it lasts me a good 18 months before I'm ready to bounce to the next best thing.
You best be kidding. Samsung will be looking to make you salivate and throw money at them for the Note 2 when it eventually arrives.
Mobile technology is moving too fast to get 5yrs out of a device - especially if you are driven to take advantage of new technologies. (Which probably is 100% of the XDA member base).
I expect in 10-16 months the next generation Note will be out there. Will it be a worthy upgrade? Probably.
Will it be a necessary upgrade? Probably not.
The average person probably goes from Gen 1 to Gen 3... Gen 3 to Gen 5, etc. I'm basing this on my circle of friends, anyway, iphone and ipad users.
I usually change my phone after 3 years, most of the time cause its not supported anymore, or cause the new OS isn't optimized (was on iphone and iOS 5 ask more power than the 3GS can provide). I'll see with the futur phone generation, one thing is sure, i cant go back to something <5,3"
Maybe a year...another 6 months if you're not very passionate about latest devices....

5 years!?
5 months might be a better time frame given how fast phone tech is evolving.
What I don't understand is why people lock themselves to a device. I make sure I keep my phones in mint condition and when I want something new I trade or sell it on craigslist.

Mobile tech is evolving too fast. I mean, with 95% of the app being simple 2D graphics what will you do with a tegra3 quadcore, honestly ? So much power for nothing, as phones can already handle 1080p HD videos and stuff.
I see myself with the note for like 1 year. Until, something spectacular comes out.

The difference is, Note is made by Samsung, its very popular and successful device already. Mark my words, there will be a successor to Note. Most probably this year itself.
I can see myself using this device for a very long time, or until it breaks. The Note has a nice balance of power, screen estate, and most importantly, battery life.
Until they improve battery technology, I will not bother moving on the Tegra 3 devices, even if the Note 2 will be quad-core. There's simply no need for that. Google is always playing catchup with making the best of hardware so in all honesty even if you got a quad-core phone, you'd probably wait a good entire year before it becomes fully optimized. =)
I will never be able to spend 2 years with the same phone. Reason why I try to protect my Note as best as I can and when the time will come I will sell it and go for the next one like I did with my last SGS1.

After 7 long years - Finally Upgraded

So finally after 7 long years i have bought my first smart phone aka Samsung Galaxy Note (White).. moving from Sony Ericsson W700I
After looking for a device for more then a year, finally decided this was the right device, initially wanted to go for the S2 until 3 months back when i first saw the Note and was not impressed buy the massive size of the phone..
But after some days the size dint look so bad and the day i played with it in the local store, i was hocked..
Super excited to write anything more, but the initial impressions have blow my mind away.. the screen is just drop dead gorgeous and cannot wait to explore the phone more and more...

i9000 - the smartest purchase ever

So, back in 2010, my wife and I were looking for new phones to buy. I had a Nokia E71 while hers was an outdated SE feature phone, and she desperately needed a smartphone to keep track of her emails. She was hell bent on getting a Blackberry. I tried reasoning with her, and she finally agreed not to get a blackberry, but then she started insisting on getting a Nokia instead. This was around Valentine's Day in 2010, I tried telling her that some great Android Phones are about to be launched, she should wait, or better still get an iPhone.
The sad state of affairs in India in Feb 2010 was such that Apple were releasing the previous year's iPhone model (3GS I think) a month before the new model was announced. I could not let her buy an outdated iPhone for INR 36,000 when she could get the latest Nokia N97 Mini for INR 24,000. I still implored her to wait for newer Android phones.
She decided she couldn't wait and she got an N97 Mini for Valentine's Day . I must say I was also interested in some Symbian devices at the time, but I kept telling myself that I could make the E71 last a few more months and make a call when the newer Androids were released.
Finally i9000 released in July 2010, and I heard the world going crazy over the internet. I still kept waiting, and I finally decided that I needed to make sure that this phone would be future proof like the HD2.
The clincher for me was XDA. I saw so many people boasting of updated i9000 ROMs for each android release that I finally purchased my own i9000 on 11/11/10.
Not disappointed at all. Have you seen the number of JB ports available for i9000? Tell me one phone that was released at the same time and has such brilliant community support. All I can say is, my brother's Desire HD cannot find even a single decent ICS ROM.
Thats right we are awesome. We know
I agree with the great community support. Yet, maybe we are also lucky because it is very much close with Nexus.
Yeah I switched from my N8 to an i9000 a couple months back and haven't looked back. I was bored of modding Symbian^3 it was just so locked down... almost why I couldn't live with an iPhone, they're great devices stock but Android devices are great stock but with heeeuuugeeeee potential.
Go open source as much as you can
I'm always motivated to the open source devices and software
I bought it during the release years ago and I'm still checking these forums everyday looking for something new.
It's still working like a charm and I love it! Thanks for the great community developing roms!

What did I say ?
Had my i9000 for about a year and a half.
Don't regret it in the slightest. If my device makes it to 3 years old I'll still be using it as my main phone.

So long DHD/I4G users :)

Inspire 4g was my first smartphone ever.
I never knew about what rooting was until i typed, "Inspire 4g jailbreak(haha silly me)" on youtube.
it gave me some results to rooting.
So i did and followed the instruction.
the link sent me to XDA.
never knew what XDA was until I looked further into the website.
For the past 2 years here on DHD/I4G , I had a great time flashing every rom.
I think i at least tried every single rom.
Im sad that some amazing rom/dev stopped supporting the dhd/i4g like....Rcmix team, Leedroid, coredroid, the family because they moved to a new phone as well.
Now that I got my Nexus 4 in my hands, I'm proud to move unto a new phone.
Flashing new roms and new stuff from different amazing devs.
Hope I have some fun time over at Nexus 4 forum!
Im still going to be keeping my Inspire 4g to play around.
If any devs need a "tester" to test something, hit me up for it.
well so long.
hope to see some of you over at Nexus 4 forum !

If any devs need a "tester" to test something, hit me up for it.
well so long.
hope to see some of you over at Nexus 4 forum !

always a sad day to see someone leave the DHD/I4G group but still, people move on. Good luck to you and your Nexus 4 exploits

the nexus 4 is certainly very tempting, but there's life in my dhd yet.
the dhd has had (and will no doubt continue to have) a pretty amazing dev comunity. im loving mine with cfx
Have a great time @ Nexus 4.
I only registered today, after reading along and flashing my DHD for the past one and a half years..
Also thought about moving on to other phones now, but none of them really suits my need. One X looked awesome, but Hardware/Software didn't excite me. S3 works like a charm, but I couldn't stand that cheap plastic cover. Note II pretty much the same, and can't be used with one hand. One X+ is quite awesome, but already feels outdated with the DLX in clear sight - plus no LTE here. And Nokia and Motorola can't excite me either.
Maybe the updated DLX (LTE, non-cable loading, 2500+ mAh) will be what I'm looking for.. but until then, I guess I'm staying with my beloved DHD.
It simply is a flawless device.

I'm using Sabsa Prime v9.0 at the moment, and it has fantastic battery life, even with Wifi turned on and doing stuff every now and then, it holds for an entire day, with mobile internet probably more, haven't tested that yet though.
Unfortunately the ROM is taken offline at the moment, they are saying the dev copied some code from somewhere, nobody knows if it's true.. you will have to wait a few days, until it hopefully is online again. :fingers-crossed:

im pretty sure the nexus 4 will satisfy you.
at least for me...it did.
Nexus 4 is not under the contract.
(my contract ended so i can get another newer phone whenever I want + Nexus 4)
Nexus 4 has great spec for its low price.
Nexus 4 can fit into 1 hand
Nexus 4 comes with the latest updates and provides fast updates
It is pretty normal that people sooner or later will change their devices, especially in the world of Android where the new/improved hardware coming out every 6 months or so, render even the today flagship devices to obsolete within less than 1 year (look at the fate of One X).
Right now I still rocking my DHD with ARHD 6.3.3, it is still runs very fine since I bought it brand new earlier this year except for battery which is already shown the sign of decreased performances. So, congratulations for those who had already have One X or the shiny new Nexus 4 in their hands! See you in that devices forum next year when I have some money to throw at that flagship.
Nice. Congrats
