[Q] Nexus 4 on AT&T - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sure there are some similar questions in the forum, so I'm sorry if this has already been answered.
I currently have an IPhone 4 on AT&T. I'm on a family plan, but I have an upgrade available. I'd like to stay on the family plan and I don't really mind being on contract. I was thinking of using my upgrade to purchase an iPhone 5 (on contract) and selling it to pay for the nexus 4.
Anyone know if it'd be easy to switch over from the iPhone to the nexus? From what I remember AT&T has different plans for iPhones, but I'm not sure. If that we're the case would I be able to change my plan accordingly, even though I used the iPhone for the update?
Any advice on this process would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah you can do that. You would need a new sim since the Iphone 5 uses a nano and the Nexus uses a micro. You would also have to call ATT to put you on the right data plan. Same price, just a different feature code so everything will work properly. Other than that, it'll be fine. They may make you pay for the sim card though

Ok, so AT&T's not gonna care if I switch phones?
And I'm seeing some crazy prices for iPhone 5's on eBay, like 7-800 bucks? Can I really get that much out of it?
Thanks for all the help!

Yeah, the iPhone 5 prices off contract are insane, so the resale market is insane.
And AT&T won't give you an issue with switching phones. The only thing to keep in mind is you need to go to an actual AT&T store to get the new sim card, not an authorized retailer. If you go to an AT&T store, the new sim wil be free. If you go elsewhere, they'll charge you.

Alright, that sounds awesome. There's a corporate store right down the road from me.
Thanks guys!

The iPhone 5 off contract prices aren't any different from high end Android phones. In some cases they are cheaper.
If you call the Nexus 4 a high end Android phone it is cheaper because Googles sells them at cost like the Nexus 7 and 10.

I did not see this response until now (didn't know you could check if people had quoted your posts!).
The 16GB iPhone 5 off-contract from T-Mobile is $650. The 16GB Galaxy S4 is $580. That's over a 10% difference.
The 32GB iPhone 5 is $750. The 32GB HTC One is $580. That's a 30% increase.

Trolling trolling trolling... Pretty much nothing to do with OP's question.

No telling. Our carriers ruin everything. Could take six months. Mine is on the way to Texas!!
U.S. looks like it's coming to AT&T, according to FCC documents
According to FCC documents filed, it appears Samsung has at least applied for approval for AT&T ... http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-galaxy-note-headed-to-usa-on-att-says-fcc-30184411/
My hope is it will be here 1st or 2nd quarter of next year with AT&T, since that's who our family plan is with.
Has anyone heard any updates to this, since that was back on September 30th.
I have a 2 year old iPhone 3GS that I would love to replace with this.
All the best !!!

How to tell when a Samsung phone will be coming out in the US:
Start with the European launch date and add the number of days you can reasonable wait for a launch. Add 6-8 months and they might be ready to release it.
So it sounds more reasonable to expect a 2nd quarter U.S. launch since it was announced in September in Europe. I sure hope it's sooner though. It clearly blows away every device I've ever had, including the hyped-up iPhone !!!
I'm going to try and wait till May at the latest, since the warranty on my iPhone 4 is up on June. I hate not being protected...So I'll get the Note from the UK if it's not released by then, then just get a square trade warranty on it.
Unless it is an "iphone" don't expect any release from at&t within 6 months of it being released to the rest of the world. AT&T sucks at releasing non iJunk.
Walk into one with a blank stare, tell them you are looking for a smart phone and
I'd bet you 100 bucks they will START with the iJunk.
When the SGS2 was FINALLY released, I walked into a corporate store to look at
one, and the sales drone said "I think we have one, but I don't care for android, I like the iPhone". Well, when you have sales people who think like that, what do you expect them to push you into? Plus, when AT&T sold their souls to get the iPhone, you can bet there was some under the table deal that keeps something that would stomp the iPhone into dust. And you can bet there is probably more profit on iJunk/accessories than any other phone.
I quit buying on contract with at&t last year with the Streak. It's expensive as hell to buy one out right, but, over the long run, you come out ahead. Plus, I'm still on the unlimited data...as long as I'm a good boy, or until at&t changes their mind again.
Thanks guys, but you bumped my 13 day old thread...
I bought a note already... Lol

Not True.
That's only true if the ETF($325 smart phone's) plus the contract price is higher then the retail price.
For the iPhone....The Retail price for the 4S 16GB is $650. So you are going to pay $200 on contract, and say you cancel the next month....that's a total of $525. Even if you include a $100 bill for the first month, that's still cheaper then buying a off-contract iPhone 4S!
It would make some sense if you got a lower monthly plan for not being on a contract, but fat chance on that. Instead, it's better to just buy on contract and let your potential ETF decrease by $10/month. When you want to leave ATT or get another phone, just sell it and buy another, you will be better off. The ETF is just there because the carrier is paying for a good portion of the phone for you.
This is still true for most Dumb Phones that are Free on contract. They can run $200 retail, and the ETF is $175..it's still cheaper to go with the contract, once again your monthly fee is the same, and the ETF decreases after each month on the network.
Now. I'm off contract on my iPhone 4. But that's because I get a cheaper monthly rate by being off contract. I use a iPad data only SIM in my iphone, which is the $30 Unlimited deal. The ETF after 16 months was $175...which is the cost for less then 3 months of service. I would be paying the Unlimited data sim anyway just to keep it...So this way I save a ton of cash.
Now if ATT get the Note...that's a $800 device! If ATT only asked $400 on contract that would still be quite the deal, as the Contract price plus the ETF would be $725...still cheaper then the unlocked retail version! And since ATT is what I would be using here in the US anyway, it really makes no sense for me to get the unlocked version. Now...if the Locked version does not have LTE, and does not work with my iPad SIM as my iPhone does, I may just bite the bullet and get the Internationale version anyway, that way I can go on using my data only device.(I use google voice for text and talkatone for voice, android has a Voip gmail google voice client as well)

Where would be the best and cheapest place to get a Note?
Has anyone ever used ... electroprise.com on Manhattan before? ... http://electroprise.com/samsung-galaxy-note-gt-n7000-gsm-hsdpa-quadband-unlocked-p-2911.html. I'm up for an upgrade, with AT&T, anyways and they say they have a Note for $399, with a plan, which seems pretty good (cost varies with the type of plan).
If I sell my iPhone 3GS for $150-200 then it's only about $200-250 extra for the phone. Has anyone heard of a great place(s) or offer(s) for the Note, with a plan (since I need to extend my plan anyways)?
I'm going to call electroprise.com today and see what the real deal is ... it seems too good to be true. FYI, my current intention is to wait until the Note comes to AT&T and get it for $200 possibly (it may be $400 anyways !!!), but I would have to wait 6 months, which is a total bummer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ... all the best !!!

WOW this seems too good to be true LOL. $600 off contract? $400 on contract? This phone is not even offered for a contract on any US carrier. Not sure about this one...
I just read this on androidcentral.com (2011-11-06)
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note/131663-where-buy-galaxy-note-us.html ...
"Re: Where to buy Galaxy Note for US?
You can't get the Note from a US carrier yet. You will need to order international. Many have ordered from Handtec () without issue. They are currently shipping their second batch out. They have a choice of unlocked with no network logo or for slightly less, unlocked with a network logo on boot.
You can also order from Amazon Germany or clove.co.uk
You won't be able to take advantage of the 3g or 4g network on T-Mobile with the International version of the note. It does not have the antenna and chipset for the lower frequencies used on the higher speed network. You will only get voice and 2g speed out side of Wi-Fi. The Korean version of the Note with LTE is being released very soon and will be using the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset (like the Galaxy S2 on T-Mobile). This will likely be compatible with T-Mobile's higher speed network.
The International Note can be used with ATT HSDPA network without issue and at full speed. Some are using the unlimited pay as you go, non-smartphone plan (I think it is called gophone) with the note. I believe it is ~$50/month. Since ATT can only check the IMEI number on units it sells, you should be able to use an unlocked, international Note with this plan without having ATT change your plan to a more expensive "smartphone", limited plan.
-Alex-"
"I also found out from Wikipedia that AT&T has the following frequencies ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility ... does everyone agree with these?
Radio Frequency Summary
The following is a list of known frequencies which AT&T employs in the United States:
Frequency Protocol Class
Frequencies used on the AT&T Network 850 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE 2G
850 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
1900 MHz UMTS/HSPA 3G
700 MHz LTE 4G"
That means AT&T should match up well with Note's frequencies ...
HSPA+ up to 21Mbps 850/900/1900/2100
4G LTE
EDGE/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900
This is just my two cent worth ... maybe I should wait for the 4G phone ... aaarrggg !!! Like I said before, any help would be appreciated.

I love your signature " ... after getting off iPhone", since that what I'm doing.
The iPhone is a "Smartphone for dummies" in my opinion. I used to hack the old XDAs/Windows phones a lot and I'm looking forward to doing it again with Android.

Yeah I saw the light XD. After experiencing what the Android can do(flash, bigger screen, better customization with ROMS and kernals, etc) I don't think I can go back to an iPhone. I've been loyal to having an iPhone since the first generation, the 4s is what threw me off the ship. Now I'm thinking about picking up a Note I thinking of picking it up from this guy http://www.ebay.com/itm/140636202852?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Exchange my Galaxy for an unopened one and resell it for $450, so minus that from $750 the phone will cost me around $300.
I'm not so sure about the website you posted, I haven't seen the Galaxy Note for less than $730. But what you can do is use your upgrade to buy an iPhone 4s 16gb for $200, resell for $650, sell your iPhone 3gs for maybe $150. I see someone did something similar here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1338821

WTF are you smoking that this plan makes any sense? The note is not an $800 phone, it is a $700 phone that would cost ATT much less than that (550-600) in wholesale price. So you think you are "getting a deal" when you are just getting screwed like everyone else who goes on a contract.
No answer
Well I've been calling electroprise.com pretty much all day and the phone just rings after the message and prompts, so it may be too good to be true. I let everyone know if I find out anything.

Amazon - Do you agree with the financials on this?
Does this make sense ...
• I'm due for an upgrade with AT&T, so I can buy a sealed, brand new, iPhone 4S 16GB for $200 and sell it for $500-650, based on eBay research ... for a profit of $300-450.
• It looks like I can sell my 2 year old 3GS, for $100-250
• Amazon has the Note for $769.95 ... http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Unlocked-Android-Smartphone/dp/B0061YRDX6
Therefore, I should be able to make $400-700 selling the two iPhones, then buy the Note from Amazon for $769.95. So it would cost me $70-370 total for the Note. Do you all agree with this logic, or am I missing something?
Also, does anyone know how to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich on the Note yet ... is there a good forum link on "how to"? I've never had an Android before, so this is all new to me ... sorry for my ignorance.
Thanks for any help on this.

THANKs To HANDTEC for a great price and fast shipping.

Me too just did the same thing wit the galaxy s2 but I only got $450 for it.
I do the same but with two galaxy s II
Was going to do the same thing but in the end, straight talk at $45 a month unlimited comes out cheaper over the 2 year run (saving $40 a month every single month), if I get booted for too much data, than I will do this
Galaxy note from India
Will the Galaxy note from India work for ATT?
specs are as follows:
Band GSM&EDGE Band 850/900/1,800/1,900
3G Band 850/900/1,900/2,100
Network&Data GPRS 850/900/1,800/1,900
EDGE 850/900/1,800/1,900
3G HSPA+ 21Mbps
Regional Availability Global
Any information will be highly helpful.
thanks
Yes the galaxy Note from India will work with AT&T.
At&T uses band 850 and 1900 for 3G network.
I thought the Note may come out on ATT officially before end of the year with LTE support. Why not just wait another 1-2 months and see what happens.

I highly, highly doubt it. But if it does, I can always sell my current one and use the money to buy the AT&T version. Unless AT&T's version is crappier, in which case I'll simply be glad I enjoyed my Note for all of that time before AT&T got around to releasing one, and also appreciate how much better my international version is.
For people waiting to "cash in" their 24 month upgrade credit, the smart way to do it is to buy the most valuable for resale phone at the time (unfortunately usually an iphone) and sell it, saving the money for the phone they actually want. No point in waiting for the phone you actually want to be released unless you know it's coming soon and the resale value's high enough that with ebay/paypal fees included it wouldn't make more sense to go the other iroute.
Thoughts?

I'm on AT&T myself and might just wait and see what happens. If it doesn't come to AT&T, I could still always choose the UK version...and maybe the price would even come down a bit.
I'm using the Dell Streak right now. I love it, so I really don't mind waiting a bit.
mha1021 or anyone here, Can someone please, please tell me how to get a an iphone 4s with a 2 year contract to get the discount but instead activate a galaxy note instead? Perhaps i missed the details but I live in Long Island NY and at&t is not selling the iphone 4s without activating it. Am i supposed to buy it, activate the iphone and then use the sim card with the note? Is the iphone then locked or imei not cleared and not sell-able? My goal is to get a 2 year contract using the galaxy note, but purchase the iphone on the 2 year contract at $200 and then sell it to offset the cost of the note.

It doesn't hurt anything to activate the sim card in the iphone then take it out and use it in the Note. You may have to put it in a dumbphone before the Note if you want to call in and have them switch you to the $15 unlimited dumbphone data, or you may be able to just call them, give them the Note's IMEI, and tell them it's a dumbphone (insert brand/name of dumbphone here.)
But if you want the iphone unopened/unactivated (maybe it sells for more? I don't know), you can purchase it through apple in a store or on their website, using your upgrade for the $200 price, then when it gets to the apple store tell them not to open or activate it.
Thank you Max, I do not have an upgrade as I am not an at&t customer. I am planning of going under my gf's family plan so I was looking to get a new 2 year contract under that plan. (Does that matter?) I am OK with paying all of the family plan rates and am not looking to get unlimited via other means. My main problem is I was lead to believe via many posts (not here) that getting an iphone 4s with the 2 year discount was easy and I could then sell it. at&t will not sell an iphone 4s here in LI without activating it. So, is activation what I have to do or are there other options where I could get a boxed iphone 4s (legally) and activate my note instead? However, this is another important question... If I activate a brand new iphone 4s, what do I have to do to make this phone sell-able? at&t said that I had to keep the iphone for 6 months. How do they know? Is the imei locked? Do I have to unlock it via other means or can someone just add this phone to their plan? I wish at&t was more forthcoming. I do not see why there is a problem here since I am buying the 2 year contract in the first place.

Only problem is no insurance through ATT if you have an accident. You can buy a year online for $60 from a 3rd party though.

Buying the N4 outright at T-Mobile

Do you think T-Mobile will be selling the Nexus 4 off-contract for the same $349 price that Google is selling it for? If so, it would be easier to walk into my local T-Mobile store and buy it, instead of waiting for Google to ship it.
Probably not, I would assume that every carrier would have somewhat of a mark-up on the phone. I would still bet on getting the better deal off the play store.
But isn't the T-Mobile version going to support faster speed for T-Mobile?

As far as I know, there are no carrier specific versions of the Nexus 4, so what you get from T-Mobile is what you get from the play store. There is some confusion cause T-Mobile have said it will do 42Mbps and the play store just says 21, but the consensus seems to be that the play store is wrong.
EDIT: And as if by magic... http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/1...-hspa42-updates-play-store-pages-accordingly/

There is not a special version for T-Mobile:

Just got that right now, T-Mobile's announcement was confusing.
Thanks guys!
Definitely considering this phone, I love my S3, but Pure google is awesome.

According to a reliable source, TMoNews, on Twitter, T-Mobile plans to sell the phone at full retail price for $499.99 or $199 with a two year contract. I think T-Mobile must be out of its mind!

Long story bro, I had galaxy s3 international version, and I am using t mobile pre-paid atm so I was getting 2G only. So I was so freaked out thn put ads on CL, a guy call me that he wanna buy it for $500. I was like lets meet up, after few hours latter he came with a car and I was asking him to come to a public place but he was like he couldn't find that location etc. So I found him on a empty street, so he ask me to show him the phone. I gave the phone and box to his hand he was looking at it thn another car came behind his car. he was like let me give him pass. I was standing at the street close to his car window. he said let me give the other guy pass thn before i say anything he was gone :crying: everything was planed out for sure. $730 gone learn my lesson though.
Thn I went to t-mobile and buy out another S3 but it had some screen problem so I exchanged it and got another. Which has screen gap problem in left side. So yesterday I ordered a unlimited pre-paid plan with a S2 free phone, which is going to in my hands tomorrow. once i received it i will go to t-mobile and ask for a refund for S3, I have to pay restocking fee $50 and in the mean time i am gonna use S2 and wait for N4
No reason for Branded N4...
Why would you even WANT to buy the Nexus 4 at T-Mo? Way I see it is, if you grab the plain one off the play store... It's just that, Plain. No T-Mo apps, no chance of having a branded phone that'd have a lower resale value.
Like everyone, I'm planning on buying from the play store but would one that you buy from t-mo be unlocked, also or would it be locked to t-mobile?

T-Mobile is not releasing a customized version of the Nexus 4. They are selling the Nexus 4 identical to the Google Play version. That means no carrier modifications whatsoever.

Agreed! craigslist: always be carrying... I've always met in a public place, prefer starbucks (allowed to carry in the store) , always have my glock on me, if I didnt feel comfortable I'll walk away, have someone else with you as well.
Craigslist is too damn sketchy anymore
I cut back on craigslist transactions since I bought an iphone 4s unlocked. I was trading and selling lot of android phones always wanted the newest one. Traded my gs3 for an iphone 4s plus $200
The nexus 4 has me tempted to purchase it brand new and just have the iphone as a back up or possibly sell it. Would like to get 3g/4g services again instead of the 2g but I do really like the IOS

Would this work on att lte?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
This has been posted on another thread, but the Play Store specs were incorrect yesterday and have since been updated to show HSPA+ 42. This should mean that if your carrier supports those speeds the phone will take advantage of them. So yes for T-Mobile, no for AT&T (HSPA+ 21 only).
I can't post links as a new user, but you can go to the Play Store and check it out.

Tmo will be selling the same version as the play store (there only one version of the phone) so I plan on buying mine outright at the Tmo store to save on shipping. I live or work within walking distance of four Tmo stores, so its easier to go into the store then have it delivered. But this all hinges on Tmo charging $349 for the 16GB version.

Should I get the GNX 4 or 5?

I currently have a Lumia 920, but I'm thinking of buying a 2nd device.. I'm leaning towards just getting the GNX 4 then just do the LTE hack because it is cheaper, but a year old... If I do get the GNX 5, I'll do it through Tmobile's JUMP program (it's new, a bit expensive, but i can't keep the device after 6 months..)
Any thoughts??

While I love my sexy nexus 4 if I were in the market for a new phone I would get the 5. While its nowhere near as good looking as the 4 its got the latest and greatest innards. It will also receive official support from Google longer. So unless you can find a steal on the 4 get the 5:good:
It depends on how much you want to spend. The nexus 4 is great, my main knock against it is the 16(or 14gb storage), or no expandable memory. You can get the 5 with 32gb of storage but it cost more than a used N4.

Well, I love my Nexus 4 ! Considering that you want to use it as your 2nd device I would go for the nexus 4 and save some money. It has the best price-quality ratio in my opinion.
If you want the newest stuff then go for a nexus 5. Its easy as that
No brainer to me. The 5.

You're buying either one through TM? While the entry point might be a bit cheaper that way, I would suggest buying from Google or other party not connected with a carrier. Simple Mobile, TM and others have prepaid plans that allow you to just purchase a SIM and bring your own phone. As a secondary device you may not need a lot of minutes, look at T-Mobile's $30 plan. If you want to talk, Simple Mobile has a 1GB of 4g speed (throttled after that) with unlimited talk and text for $40. Your total cost of ownership over the typical 24 month contract will pay for the phone and then some (depending on your phone choice).

Buy both Nexus 4 and 5 and then play with them for a few months and then pick the one that you like and keep it. Return the one you don't like If you need the funds to buy the devices, check out the XDA Crowdfunding, j/k
LOL I actually prefer my Nexus 4. Had a Nexus 5 in my hot little hand and ended up returning it. But I don't live in an area that has LTE support. If I did I probably would have gone with the 5. I am on T-Mobile and I get great speeds on HSPA(+).
The camera was better, but marginally so IMHO, plus I get satisfactory results from the N4's cam. If there was something a bit more earth shaking about it I would have kept it... but there wasn't, and I much prefer the look and feel of the 4.

Anyhow, I decided to get the Nexus 5 through Tmo's JUMP program lol
Nexus 5 comes with the latest software updates. It's better than Samsung, HTC and the others.
I'm waiting for Android 4.3 firmware update for my GT-N7100. Kitkat? GNX 5 already has it. On GT-N7100.. Maybe with cyanogenmod.
I'd say go for N4. N5 has better hardware, more storage, better screen and latest android (this one isn't a problem, you can get it on N4 too if you're into the modding-thing), but the battery is nearly the same, which makes the N5 last way lesser. Plus, N4 costs less!

Trying to find a way to buy, US.

Hey guys
I want the Nexus 6P. I've decided nothing else is desirable.
But carriers aren't selling it in the US. I'm on ATT next program - for those who don't know what that is I pay ~$26 a month on top of my phone bill for 12,16, or 24 months. I've enjoyed it, I get an upgrade every year and don't have to houce my pockets. It's just what my bill is.
However I don't have that option with the Nexus. But I want it.
My thought was I'll just upgrade to an iPhone 6S and flip that on CL or swappa or something to get the funds in cash to pay for a Nexus 6P. Of course I'd be without a phone for a day or two, not a big deal in the grand scheme.
Except I talked to someone at work who said the problem with that is the phone you get through ATT is "financed" thus if I sesell it whoever buys would have issues and it would be labeled stolen.... I wonder if anyone can confirm this.
Are there any other people in a similar position to me who are lookin at ways to get a Nexus 6P?
I don't have the cash up front which is why I don't just order it.
Thanks guys.

I see that.
Do you know anything about the NEXT program doing that to a phone if you sell it?
I don't need another phone plan just to finance a phone, though I am interested in Project Fi I am not interested in it at this very moment.
I have looked on the ATT forums. It appears I can sell a phone that is on the NEXT program, however the buyer must be on ATT service...
I am still on the hook for the payments on the phone as well. Despite the risk this is an option. I do not want it to be the only option. Still searching..
The NEXT program and others like it are a rip off to consumers, before they subsidized the phones so you'd sign a 2 year agreement, now you pay the full retail price over time AND you sign a 2 year agreement? RIPOFF.
You've locked yourself into buying their phones, so you are stuck buying their phones.
The only 2 ways to get the Nexus 6P right now is through Google or Huawei.

I have 4 other lines in the account, it's not a ripoff. One other is on NEXT.
We would renew anyways, however there's no problem there. However now I'm looking at the Nexus and there lies the problem you bring up..
I think I might look into project fi, but then I'm paying 25% of my bill right now for one line. Not really interested.
Thus my thought was I'll get an iPhone 6s and sell it to someone who has ATT but no upgrade or something. Doubt there's a huge market for that..
I'm guessing you could unlock it and use it on another network though they say you can't. If someone buys it, it's no longer my issue. I'll pay the bill every month as I have for 3 years. They want to try and cheat the system that's not my doing..
Then I'd have the money to get a Nexus. However I don't have it without something like that. So, I'm stuck. Really looking for options here but I don't see a whole lot of them.

I actually think this is probably your best route, I think you'd be surprised the market for a brand new phone like the 6s.
If you ask a little under retail, I bet that'll sell quick, those who broke theirs but don't have an upgrade. On Verizon there is always a market for those who still have unlimited data. I bought my last two Verizon phones this way because I can't change my contract or I lose unlimited, does AT&T still have people on grandfathered unlimited plans? Or did they axe those?
Either way I think you'll easily get $500+ for an iphone 6s, which would help you recoup the cost of the Nexus.

I do not know, I was on T Mobile for close to a decade before we finally got tired of losing signal strength every time you walk into a building, among other things.
I will look at going that route then. It may be a month or so, and that will leave me with some time to see if carriers may indeed sell the phone, though it doesn't look to be the case.
I want to look into other routes here, but I don't see any that are jumping out at me. Thanks for your replies

Sell the phone if you can unlock it. I have AT&T NEXT, also. As long as you keep making payments on it they won't do anything. You just keep making payments as if you're "keeping" the phone. So you can sell it, you're just responsible to pay it off still if you have time remaining on the contract. I have a HTC One M8 that I got through AT&T and converted to a Google Play Edition. Once my 6P comes in I'll sell the M8 and continue business as usual paying it off monthly. When you go to de-activate your current phone and activate the Nexus just tell them you're keeping the phone and continuing to pay it off. They won't care.
EDIT: I should add I did talk to AT&T about this. The rep said if I sold the phone I can continue paying it off monthly as usual and wasn't required to pay it off in full to sell it. He said I wouldn't need to pay it off or anything to de-activate it and add the Nexus, either. You're not required to pay the phone off in full unless you're keeping it and want to upgrade to a new phone early through AT&T. Since you're upgrading through Google by buying the phone from them and just activating it on AT&T, you do not have to pay anything to AT&T. You just need to make sure the old phone is de-activated before you sell it, obviously.
Only problem, swappa won't sell it because it's financed. If you are honest with people, only an idiot will buy it for anything close to retail, because nothing is stopping you from cancelling service and there by blacklisting the phone.
Not saying you would stop service, but how would a potential buyer know.

I'm looking to sell third party... And I understand that. I plan to be up front to potential buyers -- someone will need it. Only giving myself a few days to handle this when/if I go this route. I don't want to go through all these steps.

I heard a rumor that carriers may have the 6P sometime later this year. Whether or not that's true though, I can't really say. So, if you don't find a way to get it now, you may be in luck in another few months.

I don't see that anyone mentioned this, but if you buy the Nexus 6P from Huawei's website you can select to do a payment plan. If you don't have the cash up front to fully pay for the phone then that may be a viable option.
This is like Verizon's new setup... I switched our plan over to their new plan system to get cheaper data... however I've never bought a phone through their little gimmick.... so I don't currently pay any extra/month for a phone. I also never will play their little game.. I'll take their savings and buy my phones elsewhere like my new 6P and just swap sim cards or go get a new sim card if they change again in the future. So really I got a pretty good deal switching while I already had a phone I bought lol.

I did call ATT just out of curiosity, they can't confirm anything about the N6P. Will have to wait it out and just let it play out.
