[VIDEO] Galaxy Note II as a Computer/PC with MHL + Bluetooth Keyboard + Mouse! - Galaxy Note II General

Ever since the OQO, I drempt of one day carrying a PC in my pocket. That day is finally here.
You can use the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 as a PC (computer), straight out of the box, no additional apps or hacks required. But you do need the right cables. A list of things you need is at the bottom.
I connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and then I connect a 11-pin MHL HDMI HDTV adapter. With the split-screen multitasking capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, it outshines all smartphones, and even most tablets in this regard, but it is not without many flaws.
There isn't a menu button on a standard mouse, when playing hardware accelerated video there doesn't seem to be an option to not only output video on the TV monitor, the Samsung keyboard is required to be enabled when using a Bluetooth keyboard, so it pops up whenever you click with the cursor.
Using a smartphone as a PC computer is an ability that is many years in the making. With all those minor to major annoyances, it is still near flawless at it's most essential task, which is web browsing, Flash works 95% too. The web browsing experience is leaps and bounds any web browser on any smartphone. You can definitely quote me on that. Spent about $80 on accessories to put this video together. Hope you appreciate it!
Required: Samsung Galaxy Note II, 11-pin MHL HDMI HDTV Adapter, Bluetooth keyboard, Bluetooth mouse, power adapter for your Galaxy Note 2, HDMI cable.

speaking of MHL, is the MHL built into this phone, or do we need to MHL adapter, similar to what HTC phones need? Or do we need just the MHL cable without the adapter?

Thanks. I think I ca use my MHL from my Amaze4G then (will need to test to make sure)
I also have the (usb to HDMI) MHL cable without any adapter, was hoping that would be compatible.

You may need a converter, the thing still uses micro-usb but the pinout on the note2 and s3 is different from earlier phones. about $3-$5 of ebay.

thanks for taking the time to video this Really like the multi windows part, most useful

yup got both converter and the cable itself was hoping though to drop the converter and just use the cable since i've never had any device that can use the mhl cable without adapter.
thanks again

I was wondering, have you been able to figure out solutions for the issues?
- virtual keyboard popping up every time you click with the mouse
- videos taking up the monitors full screen instead of split screen
I really appreciate the video and made a thread on it in the Nexus 4 forum here on xda :good:

Wow, thank you so much for doing that. I totally appreciate it!
As for keyboard popup issues, I think Samsung just needs to push out an update and remove the requirement to have samsung keyboard enabled when using the bluetooth keyboard.
As for videos taking up the full screen. I'll let you know if I find a solution.

I guess 'bluetooth null keyboard' on market could help you with the keybord popping up issue....

External Keyboard Helper
Get this from the play store, it is the best way to sort the Bluetooth Keyboard issue by far. Been trying out different apps, but that one works perfect.
Even pops up whenever the BT KB is connected to let you select it and then again on disconnect.

I use the allshare cast instead of the mhl adapter. Works great!!
Jump Desktop is a great VNC client for my arm devices (chroot, touchpad, & raspberry pi) and splashtop works wonders on my x86 ubuntu box and associated VMs.

Yes. If your status is modified neither MHL nor Allshare Cast work. Triangle Away really helps here, though you do need a stock kernel.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2

Am I missing something? Mhl works fine in a modified state, I have perseus kernel stock rom and rooted
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 2

It doesn't work for me unfortunately. If I am modified it will connect and immediately disconnect.

Bluetooth can be buggy with so many revisions, that it would be impossible to say all keyboard mouse combos would work. Anecdotally, I haven't had a problem.

I think you can also add soft key on the screen to bring out the menu/home/return function

Thinking of buying, but a couple of questions first..

Is there a HDMI out via mhl or a standard Samsung connector?
Some of the Adobe apps don't work on screens under 8.9in. Can you root and then hack the config file (my mind blank as to what its called) to set the size of the screen?
Can I modify the keyboard dock for my 8.9 tab to fit the note? (Not as stupid as it sounds. The 8.9 dock is the same as the one for the gtab and the 10.1 tab.)
BTW if any UKer fancies swapping for an iPad3 let me know
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I had no problem with any Adobe applications playing Flash or YouTube in the browser.
Yes you can change the DPI but only if rooted.
No the galaxy tab comes with preparatory charging connection while Note has micro USB.
Fortunately I'm not a UKer, so can avoid falling into the iPad swapping trap! ! .
Edit: you have to buy a separate MHL adapter to connect to hdmi via micro USB.
1. It's HDMI via MHL
2. Adobe Photoshop works as long as you add some missing fonts.
3. No idea
Thanks for the information. Cheers.
The Adobe apps I was thinking of were Touch, but also Proto and Collage. Do you know if they can be made to work in the same way?

[Q] support for HDMI and USB OTG

im going to buy that phone but do it supposrt that? i already got hdmi and usb one from my N7000 note
wish it does(((
this phone got low storage and i really like this phone
sorry yes it doesnt have OTG support its horrible it would be awesome specially for this guy
im thinking if i get out of space
Yes it does have OTG but you need an external power.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181820
thanks but i dont think i can find this in iran and i already got a cable for my note
anyway i dont really care about this
woops sorry! i tought its a cable is it safe:?
For HDMI out I don't think your cable will work. Majority of older phones use mhl for HDMI out but the n4 uses slimport and mhl cables will not work
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
1. Nexus 4 uses Slimport, not MHL. You'd need to buy a new cable anyway.
2. OTG only works with external power, and cannot work simultaneously with Slimport (No HDMI+OTG).
3. There is Miracast, but it sucks.
damn i bough cable wanted to experience playing games on hd tv but my phone bricked after that no chance let me see if that works whit htc one s (of my father)
anyway mine got a hdmi input and a power input and a micro-usb output
and slim port is it better? never heard about it

I just got the Rocket fish Miracast dongle from best buy. Works flawlessly. Streaming Netflix, HBO, CNN, etc. For gaming not useful, but for a media center experience, is perfect.

note 3 mhl adaptor?

Anyone know if the note 3 will support usb to hdmi. With all the power of new phone kind of wanted to try on the big screen with some emulators for old school games. I wanted to buy one now so I can have it ready when i get my note . (unless anyone know about chromecast going 100% local content very soon)
With the new usb3.0 on note 3 we will not know unless Samsung confirms if the old ones will work until someone gets the phone And tries ... sad but true

Correct. Worked with my Samsung MHL 2.0 cable (at 60Hz) and the Smart Dock. Was relieved that it still works with the Smart Dock, even though 60Hz via MHL 2.0 is preferable.

No MHL?

I received mine yesterday, have been testing it all day, everything looks fine, no significant lag. One thing I cannot test out is the MHL function. I tried mt MHL adapter, it does not work at all. Can anyone help me test if this feature exists or I got a lemon?

This is the adapter I am using that I had bought for my Note 2 (I'm sooo happy Samsung decided to go with Micro-USB on this device).

It might be the older 5 pin version when the newer Samsungs have moved onto 11 pin adapters.
You could either upgrade or get an 5 pin to 11 pin adapter.
On a somewhat related note: Does this tablet have miracast support?

I tried the Samsung HDMI adapter I bought last year for my Note 2. It works for the Note 2 but not Note 3. The HML adapter will show like a dark snow effect and without it on it is a blank TV. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the TV resolution :/

MHL works
l picked up one from Monoprice that came with the 5 to 11 pin converter. Worked fine with the tablet and my S3 watching streamed content with the Hulu plus subscription included with the tablet.
I'm sorry but I am not following this thread very well. If I want to connect my 10.1 2014 to a HDMI TV what exactly do I need (as has been confirmed to work)?

I haven't tested it but It works with my S4, says its compatible with Note 3 and Note 8 so should work on this.
I haven't tested this on my new 10.1 2014 yet, BUT
It works great on my Galaxy S 4 so I'm confidant it will work. I normally don't order generic and always go with Samsung OEM, but since it's near impossible to find a genuine Samsung one for a reasonable price I ordered from mycablemartDOTCOM since I LOVE their HDMI cables/adapters.

Hope this helps someone!
My Note 2 adapter works just fine!
I purchased the note 2 adapter from Samsung and it works perfectly with my 2014 edition!
bought this but doesn't connect
Cable Matters Micro-USB to HDMI MHL Adapter in Black and Charging Cable in Black 1 Metre* from Amazon.
It connects straight to my htc one x but not my galaxy 10.1 note.
Is it just not compatible or do I need to change settings on my tab?
My mhl works fine that I got for my s4. It also works for my note 3 with the USB 3.0. Since the galaxy s3 you need a mhl 2.0 adapter. They have extra pins. The old mhl won't work on newer Samsung devices
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
The catch being it is a battery drain. Net negative even when charging. You can not even watch a complete movie if streaming Netflix on the S4.
Near worthless as a result on the S4.

[Q] Why So Little HDMI (or MHL) Discussions?

I'm curious as to why the topic of HDMI has so little interest. It just baffles me. We need to find a way to stir more interest in this topic. I have a TMo Galaxy Note 3 and I am having problems. I have both a 5 pin (with 11 pin adapter) and a native 11 pin device along with a Samsung AllShareCast dongle. All 3 worked at 1080p with my Note 2. Now with my Note 3 only the AllShareCast works at 1080p while the two MHL adapters now only work at 720p. I prefer MHL to the compression artifact laden AllShareCast so this is frustrating me. I'm just wishing there was a way to force any HDMI output to whatever resolution I want just as you can on a PC. If you go into the device section under settings on an Android mini PC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j5ZFlJB7eo) you'll notice an HDMI selection:

I want that menu on my phone! Why does none exist? It can't be too difficult to add it. Or is it? Need some Dev's to way in. There simply must be a relatively easy way to just select output resolutions using an app or from the Android settings. MHL has been around for some time now (2 years?). Come on! We have powerful PC's in our hands now! Let's get them desktop/home theater friendly!
Any apps needed for mhl? I froze so many in titanium backup, maybe too much...
I have LG IPS 277 with mhl cable but when i plug it in, i have black screen.

I did see where there are several different versions of adapters maybe you don't have the latest? IDK
I have no problems using the official Samsung mhl cable. The one for the s3 and up that is. Most cheaper versions only have a 5 pin connector whilst the newer phones from Samsung (like s3 and up) require a 11 pin mhl. That would be the reason you get a black screen. Don't buy the cheap knockoffs imo. The Samsung stuff works because.. Well it's Samsung stuff
I am rooted, debloated and removed all crap with titanium backup etc. All works fine for me.
