Screen Protectors? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I mean, really?
N4's screen is made of Gorilla glass, right? That means we can finally put it in the pockets, purses, without worrying that the key will scratch it. So why overlay a protector over it? So that it will feel less smooth?
Is there really a need for a screen protector for the Nexus 4?

Gorilla glass is more scratch resistant than regular glass, not scratch proof.

Well Gorilla Glass is just a brand name for strengthened glass. It is not scratch proof, merely scratch resistant.
I probably will not be using a protector because I dont keep my phone in the same pocket as my keys, but eventually I will probably put one on.

My Sensation 4G, which uses gorilla glass (if i'm not mistaken), doesn't have any screen scratches and I did not use a screen protector.
My GNex on the other hand... ohhh boy. Samsung should have sent them in the box that the phone came with!

I asked because none of my friends who used iPhone never put any protection on, and with some care, none of them have any scratch on the screen. Oh well, I guess I'll skip the protector and just be careful about where I put it.

Its not keys or coins that scratch it... its dust/ sand.

the only reason i ever use screen protectors is to protect the resale value of the phone im using (since i change phones every year) but with the low price of the nexus 4, im kind of glad and wont be putting one on!
my galaxy nexus went 2 weeks without a screen protector and got a scratch (small but still noticeable)

I got a screen protector for my GNex the moment I decided I don't want it in a pouch anymore. I had the XO skin, but it affected the touch so much I just wanted to tear it away...

I have leftover screen protectors from my old Galaxy Nexus. Since their screen shapes are more or less similar, I'll just put it on the Nexus 4.

I've had my inspire for almost 2 years without a screen protector and haven't got a single scratch. I will never put a screen protector on my phones.

Recommend?
I never bought a screen protector before for my phones. I usually just put them in the neoprene case I bought. However, when I got my GN I notice it got some scratches on it. How I don't know cause in my pocket I care my phone nothing else goes in there but my phone.
So I am out looking to get a Full Body Protector (Screen & Back) and was wondering what everyone would recommend on brand wise?
Thanks!!!

I have about three scratches on my Nexus screen, but then this is not 'Gorilla Glass' ('fortified glass' means nothing). I won't ever put a protector on any of my phones, especially not when it would ruin the ergonomic design like the Nexus 4's screen.

Wet - never buy dry screen protectors, waste of money.
They are obviously grippier (not even sure that's a word lol) than none at all, but less so than skinomi, zagg and bodyguardz. (i know, I've tested all lol)
Hard to explain the feel of a skin.....
You can drag one finger down the screen with no pressure applied without it sticking

Screen protectors and skins

With the Acer Iconia A500 still being relatively new to the market, there's not a lot out there at the moment; however, the products are starting to trickle in.
I thought it would be good to start a thread on screen protectors and skins.
The Iconia takes fingerprints to a whole new level! For me a screen protector is going to be essential, not only for the obvious protection quality but hopefully to reduce the fingerprint issue.
Below are a few links I have found out and about on the net:
Skinomi
A few screen protector - slash - skins
(wood texture and carbo fiber type appearances)
See here
Zagg Invisible Shield
Just the screen protector for now. Hopefully a whole body skin to come.
See here
PDair
Ultra clear screen protector
See here
Excpect
Matt screen protector
See here
I have the exspect one on now and not impressed, I wouldn't recommend it, I'm holding out for the Skinomi one being available in the UK.
The exspect isn't a great fit, doesn't go on easily, distorts the screen a bit and makes a hell of a noise when you run your finger over it.
Conclusion: spend your money elsewhere!

Thanks for your feedback on this. It's good to know.
I have my reservations about a matt screen protector; however suspect it could be handy for people who are wanting to use the device in brightly lit areas, or outdoors.
Saw this on eBay:

I use my tablet as a reader outside quite a bit so I'm curious if it would help and ordered one. Will post back once it arrives.

Unfortunately they don't post outside of the US which is a shame.
Not sure why, we're hardly talking a heavy parcel here! *lol*
I ordered a custom sizes screen protection (157.5 mm x 255 mm) here protectionfilms24 for Europe.
model Vikuiti™ ADQC27
The Vikuiti™ ADQC27 display protection foil is crystal-clear, shiny and anti-reflective. Thus considerably reducing the intensity of reflections on your display in comparison to common foils!
We developed this sensational display protection foil in collaboration with 3M, so that your display remains rich in contrast while outdoors or in bright areas. Through the anti-reflective coating, black is portrayed blacker.
The Vikuiti™ ADQC27 display protection foils have an extremely scratch-resistant surface (scratch resistance is above a 4H pencil hardness) and are as smooth and shiny as glass is. While bringing on the display protection foil you can re-position it and also pull it off again at any given time.

I love that these can be custom made!
Skinomi and ZAGG, aside from the cut, are about identical. They apply the same way and the material is the same. It's like tinting car windows. It's daunting at first but it's very easy to do once you've done a few devices.
My only problem with those two is the glare. It's BAAAD. On the plus side, if you mess up or if a piece of fiber gets caught inside, you can easily redo it. Just spray your fingers, peel, spray the inside, pick out the debris with your fingers, and then squeegee the liquid out (with a paper towel waiting at the edge so nothing drips off your device). Easy.
I just bought one off of ebay for $13.99 with free shipping.Seemed like a decent deal. I would post a link but since I'm new I can't yet.
I've use skinomi in the past and fitment wasn't 100% spot on but still great price hopeby now there fitment issues have been resolved because if that film slightly hangs off it will get dirt and it looks horrible but i ordered the skinomi for my iconia fingers crossed lol

Good idea. I actually bought 2 from two different sellers. One was worth the money the other not so much.
The moto xoom screen protectors from vrzn(3pack) fit the actual screen perfectly. Just doesn't protect the remaining part of the bezel. For $18 after my 20% I have 3 of them instead of one

There is still glare however it is not nearly as bad and the screen protectors are much easier to clean I can't stand zagg screen protectors, especially feeling obligated to keep it on after spending so much.

FYI iPad screen protectors will cover the screen of the Iconia; however they fall short of covering the full length of the device. The screen itself (where all those grubby finger prints end up) is covered though.
A reasonable solution fo the short term until we see some designated Iconia stock.
I've currently got the Exspect protector on which isn't good at all, distorts the screen and you hear your finger running over it when using the screen. As it's matt it does reduce glare a bit but I really don't recommend it.
I've got a Skinomi protector coming from Amazon in the US, not sure how long it'll take to get here but hopefully it'll be good, I've happily used a zagg for ages on my HTC Desire so hope the Skinomi is as good if not better.
Just ordered the Carbon Fiber skin from Skinomi.
Used a promo code GET25 and got an additional 25% off. I'll post photos as soon as I get it applied. Total was $26.21. Free shipping is standard to US and Canada.

It's funny, they give you the option of buying skins for either the A500 and A501 . . .
My device is technically the A501 but I ordered the A500 - not sure how there could possibly be any cosmetic difference between the two.

Screen Protectors?

Has anyone found a nice, clear, and not so grippy screen protector for the M? I absolutely despise Verizon's screen protector. I just tried Zagg's HD invisibleshield this week. That was an epic fail. Not clear at all, despite the BestBuy salesman swearing its even better now than it was a year ago. I was hoping for some sort of thicker type like the Spigen glas.t. I realize this topic is visited all the time in other forums, but we have limited choice at the moment. Any recommendations or insights would be greatly appreciated!

There is this new screen protector call liquid armor it's a spray on screen protector I have not tried it yet but it looks like a great screen protector it's only 25 dollars and last for 6 months it's an invisible shield I guess so it won't take away any clarity from screen because you spray it on and it only takes 10 minutes to dry here is a link to it if you do get it please tell me if it works good if I don't get it before you.

I picked up a Skinomi from Amazon and it is great...
Do you really need one? I've never used one on any of my devices and have never scratched any of those screens. I keep my phone in my pocket too.
Guess it's personal preference. Or added sense of security. ??
Haven't searched their site yet, but I loved the Wrapsol screen protector on my iPhone the short time I was on the dark side..
Super clear, smooth (not grippy), and easy to keep fingerprints off. Also was nice that it was a "dry" application process.
I'm running my phone naked on the screen now. Love the way it looks, but the fingerprints drive me nuts.

Mind describing it more? Is it smooth for your fingers to glide on like for swype? Is it crystal clear without the oil look or degrade the screen quality? It looks like application is similar to invisible shield, which I don't mind, but I didn't like the rubbery feel of invisible shield. Is this any different? I saw it on amazon also. Thanks!!

I work outside in a fairly dusty/sandy occupation. I usually have sand and clay in my pocket at the end of the day. I'm definitely stressing for that added measure of security. I prefer the clarity of no screen protector, but I know a scuff or scratch would drive me insane.

Some people do need/want one. Hence the post. So, not sure why you're asking.
I would like one where it seems to allow your finger to glide easier. Some screen protectors seem to smudge just as much or more than stock. A friend of mine had one that allowed for a great smooth feel which didn't seem to smudge at all. Had a matte type finish and was dark unfortunately. I'd love to try one with that matte finish that wasn't dark and that kept visibility good, just not sure it exists.

ghost armor! if you can install it yourself that is, its a little pricey if you go to the booth in the malls, 25 for front 40 for full body ( on the site if you can install yourself it is 15 for front 25 for whole phone ), however to me its worth it, i like my phone to feel like it does without anything on it an ghost armor comes the closest to it in my opinion, it feels just like the glass no texture to it, i dont even notice that i have a screen protector on. definitely worth the money :good:
Late to the party.
I know this is a little after the fact but I highly recommend http://www.bestskinsever.com. Good quality products, good pricing and great customer service.
Bought Benks Magic SR from obostore. Awesome packing and great fingerprint protection for the screen!
Have anything you'll need to install or even reinstall the film (sticky strings to remove dust, blue easy removable tape to hold it during applying).

I had to replace my M not too long ago. I had the protector from the Trident Aegis on it, and that was a great weekend cover! So, since that was lost in the device swap at Best Buy, they hooked me up with a Zagg, again. They installed, and its good so far. A few imperfections and permanent scuffs though. I don't believe it's worth 25$, but it's handling the job at my sandy/clay ridden job

This is the best screen protector ever.
http://www.armorsuit.com/
its awesome u can hardly see it installs easy and works the bubbles out itself.
I know everyone's got mixed feelings about the various wet application protectors, but I have had good experiences w/ xtremeguard. I purchased the M full body screen, along with a few others, when they had their 82% off sale a month or so ago. The shipping on the products, and the quality control, leave something to be desired (the first shipment, some of the protectors had creases in them, some of the cutouts were not precise, and some of the skins were not delivered).
However, their customer service was great. Whenever I emailed to advise them of an issue ((1) full body skins that they did not send, (2) skins that were not accurately cut, (3) sending me the front, but not the back protector), they immediately sent me a replacement one until they got my order right.
I used a soap and water combo and put the screen and rear protector on my M. Other than my misapplication (which caused a small bubble in the lower left corner, I felt like xtremeguard was a great VALUE, and works well.
Y'know, on my last phone, I paid $20 for the Verizon screen protector. That thing got beat the hell up... scratches, smudges, etc. Then, I found out my phone had gorilla glass all along, and was more resistant to scratches and smudges than the protector itself. The only thing the protector did was reduce the touch sensitivity.
So, I would say that, if you do get some kind of screen protection, you probably aught to prioritize impact resistance... I've seen my fair share of shattered gorilla glass displays, but I can guarantee I've never seen a scratched one... and the smudges are surprisingly hard to see on this phone... though not non-existent.

Your Xperia Z, after the buzz!

So now Xperia Z has been released for months.
It's still a very cool and beautiful device. With glass covering the both front and the back. :good:
Performance wise, it's amazing. Packing a Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU + Adreno 320 GPU, everything just runs smoothly.
But there's one question that's always on my mind, how does you Xperia Z look after using it for months?
Is it still new and shine? Or it has some scratches already? Do you use a cover to protect it?
*Please include photos showing the condition of your Xperia Z now. "
So this is how my Xperia Z looks after 2 months!
It has some scratches at the protector at the back already, front is still in a good condition.
The sides are all fine. I don't use any cover to protect it! HAHA

Mine looks similar to yours, but got two chips in the rubberish coating from where I've knocked it off the couch on to a tiled floor, both times my heart stopped thinking it must have cracked but luckily it hadn't. Wouldn't dream of wrapping it up in case though as you really can't appreciate how beautiful a device it is otherwise.
You don't use any cover on your xperia Z ? you are wishing for trouble sooner or later mister
The front and back anti-shatter cover is very fragile to scratches, you should at least put a protector on top of the front one imho, at least is my advice.
I have my Z like a fortress with a seperate tempered glass on front and a TPU case on the back. Not saying it will never break but at least i feel more at ease when using the phone on a daily basis.

I have, front and back, I kept the original plastic on the back for the first week, but had a disaster putting the first two provided protectors on, which I left on for another week but couldn't bare the air pockets made by tiny fibers, so redid them both, un-noticeably off alignment but a perfect painstaking surface to surface contact the second time round.

I'm not looking.
Removed the anti shatter film last week and love it. It has a few scratches in the rubber where its been knocked. I don't use a case as I like the naked feel.
I usually only keep a phone for about 6-9 months anyway so keeping it pristine as opposed to just using the thing isn't such a big deal to me.
(I'm going to replace it with a Nexus 5 for proper AOSP goodness and it will end up tossed in the drawer with the rest of my old devices lol)

5 months now without a case or cover ( I had a leather book opening type for a week, but it was just to bulky) no major damage, just some slight faint scratches on the back. I keep it in my front trouser pocket with no other items.
A case would spoil it in my opinion.
The only worry that i'm thinking is how long does the waterproof works. Mean, We all charge the phone everyday, so, opening and closing the microusb cover, maybe decrease its hermetic function. I purchased my phone on winter, so i'm wondering if the phone will be still waterproof till summer.
I hardly ever open the covers, the charging dock works very well. Maybe the headphone cover will get worn away though...

The only worry that i'm thinking is how long does the waterproof works. Mean, We all charge the phone everyday, so, opening and closing the microusb cover, maybe decrease its hermetic function. I purchased my phone on winter, so i'm wondering if the phone will be still waterproof till summer.

The standard Sony one. I actually bought 2, one for home, one for work.
I got mine on 18th May, so it's 3 months and 3 days old. Mint condition. Screen protector and Nillkin hard case are applied just after unboxing
Buttons are OK, no cosmetic wear, scratches, bumps or any damage whatsoever.

2 months using my xperia Z, still 100% like new. Not using any softjacket.
some scratch in back cover within weeks, and I removed the shatterproof, now looking sooo nice! glossy finish, and not-so fingerprint magnet.
And no scratch! I've tested with sharp tweezer.
For my front glass, I've use ordinary clear protective sheet.
Polyamide plastic (bezel) still like new, no dent/chips
Sorry for no photos and my bad english.

Anyone going naked? No screen protector?

I'm hesitant to remove the screen protector that came with the device. Does this screen scratch easily? I ordered some protector, should arrive next week.

As long as you're careful and don't keep it in your pocket with keys or rocks you should be fine. I've had the G2 for about 2 weeks with no screen protector and it still looks brand new. Also I had a Galaxy Nexus for 2 years with no screen protector (which afaik did not even have Gorilla Glass) and that screen is still perfect as well.
I do have a case on it though.
No screen protector and lives in pockets with change and keys. Screen looks as good as day 1.

I'm debating this a lot.
On one hand it's nice to have some sort of screen scratching protection. I baby my phones and they usually get their own pocket, but with my Galaxy Nexus I did notice a phantom super tiny scratch and set my ocd off being sad that it wasn't perfect anymore. On a side note though the GNex didn't have Gorilla Glass. My Droid 1 did and survived being scratched.
On the other hand these phones were made to be used naked. People add protectors to keep their phone in pristine condition, but what happens after 2 years of using it and upgrading, you just leave the old one to the side and forget about it. The entire time you could have used it in its maximum comfortability you chose to hinder yourself instead. Why take that away? Unless you plan to sell it, then I see a point.
So far I've had a naked screen for about 2 weeks now. No phantom scratches present and it's been a lot more pleasant to use than with a screen protector applied to it. I know it's a risk, but I took it on the Droid 1 and it turned out to be fine.
Naked and loving it

Ive said this in another thread, i dont think it matters much what the glass is made out of but more important is the coating because my HTC ONE would scratch very easy under the same use i put my g pro note2 and s4 through and my g2 is now a moth old and looks like day one.
GNex was lotus glass, iirc. Same specs as GG, different vendor.
I dropped my naked G2 on day 2 onto a parking lot. Picked up a very minor scratch and a chip the size of a pin point.
Mine didn't even come with a screen protector. I've been naked since I've got it (around Sept. 18-ish) and haven't even used the free window cover that came with it. I haven't dropped it or anything but it seems like it would survive. It has some scratches only visible under certain lighting conditions, but invisible with the screen on.
here is the reason i put a case on mine http://www.androidauthority.com/lg-g2-drop-test-282528/
I seem to recall seeing something about Gorilla glass being good against keys, but sand is really bad. Sand is as hard as the screen, so will scratch it. If you live in a sandy environment, it may be more of an issue.
To add to what I said earlier, a case is a must!! The corners are always weak spots.
I run all my phones naked and this one is no exception. While I don't expect it will take the same amount of abuse as my 1G iphone, I'm sure this phone will hold up fine.
ALways naked....always. I wanna touch her sweetness when I play with her and have her brush up against my leg as she sleeps in my pocket.
(I have issues I know)
Screen protectors these days don't add anything to the screen. The clarity and the smoothness are perfect. I can't imagine not having them on considering how cheap they are.
I found that this phone is better with case for me. It is easier to hold, insulate the heat from your hand and that glossy back really gets on your nerve after a while.
-LG G2
My screen has never been touched by bare hands. I had screen protectors already waiting for when the phone arrived. Took off the factory protector and applied this before I even hit the power button. Also using a quickwindow case.
Normally I always go totally bare on phones. But I also used to jump from phone to phone a lot more, and rarely bought new. My gnex was one of my only totally new (albiet subsidised phone). I didnt use anything on that. I had jt near two years, signifancly longer than any other phone, but it looks like hell. Screen has some noticable scratches and all the corners are rough.
Having bought the G2 outright, i feel much more inclined to protect it. Plus, i am certain to sell it eventually, probably in a year or so. Id like it to be as prestine as possible.
Guys take it from me and my cracked G2, which resulted loss of the entire bottom digitizer and get a case. :crying: Though my previous phone (HTC EVO 3D) took drops like a champ and ran great but this one, after 1 not as high drop pretty much killed it..

I've owned several phones ever since my original Droid 1, I've never used a screen protector on any of them and none of them have ever scratched. I treat them well but I'm not overly careful either, I throw it in my pocket daily with whatever else is in my pocket, usually keys. I've dropped most of them several times, I've gotten scuffs and scratches on the edges and backs but never on the screen. I don't know if I've just been really lucky or what but I'm convinced gorilla glass is not easy to scratch. I'm sure it can be done but I haven't had it happen yet, and I can't stand the feel of screen protectors. In my opinion they completely ruin the beautiful screen on a lot of phones. I know many people say you can't even see the good ones or feel them, but Ive never seen one I thought looked good. Just my opinion.

Zagg Glass Curve Elite

Edit: DO NOT BUY. You will be disappointed. In my opinion, it needs recalling and redesigning.
Note: please see edit at bottom.
Thought I'd talk about the Zagg Glass Curve Elite as it seems to be overlooked in favour of these LOCA types.
I upgraded from an S7 EDGE and in the first few months of owning it I spent a lot of money and for the most part wasted that money trying to find a decent glass screen protector for the edged screen with not much joy. The issue as everyone knows by now is that virtually none are fully adhesive.
I've used Zagg products for years now and have never had reason to fault them, but they did mess up their first iteration of a TGSP for the S7 EDGE. Since then, I had given Zagg a wide birth.
After pre- ordering my S9+ I set about looking at how TGSP manufacturers had come along. I found of course, the Whitestone, but the process seemed complex and the price was pretty high for a TGSP. But what put me off was the use of LOCA. It just doesn't sit right with me.
Then I noticed Zagg were now offering a full adhesive TGSP without the use of LOCA. I placed an order and waited. I was sceptical after the S7 EDGE version (which wasn't fully adhesive). However it arrived today and I have to say, they've come good again for me.
Installation was dead easy. Clean the screen. Attach the positioning support. Apply the protector. Once on, it was just a case of squeezing out the air bubbles.
I thought I might have issues with cases as it does cover a lot of the edges, however to my surprise my Spigen Tough Armour fit fine (as shown). Sensitivity seems fine, although I did enable the enhanced touch option in settings as a precaution. The glass feels great and seems pretty tough.
Edit: Having used this for a couple of days now I have to point out one area where this protector falls short of being perfect and that's on the two side edges. For some reason known only to Zagg, they added thin black borders. At first I didn't notice it as a problem but now they're irritating me constantly. They obscure a portion of the edge meaning you can't see parts of the screen along that edge at times. And because it doesn't go all the way around the edge, you can see screen bleeding through on the outer edge. Its unsightly.
I've removed my recommendation as a result. It's such a shame because it would otherwise be perfect.

Question. I noticed with a lot of the glass protectors on the S8+, if you looked at the screen along the edge of the phone, it didn't cover everything. You would see a sliver of screen past the protector. Or the small black boarder would cover part of the screen. Could you check this with yours? Maybe a picture or two?

Can confirm that this is still the case. However, I wouldn't want it to go any further otherwise it would be incompatible with the majority of cases. It covers enough of the edge to not feel the edge of the protector when swiping in from either side of screen.

100% full adhesive. I've not tried lifting it but it seems like it would need a good bit of leverage to pull it off, which is good as the plastic fitting frame caught it as I removed it, but the protector did not budge or crack.

My experience with the zagg was not so good.....
I am experienced with installing TGSPs
I did follow the instructions to the letter!
One edge seemed to work well.....the other, not so much
I could get all the bubbles out, but then it wanted to lift back off all by itself?

This is the inherent problem with screen protectors unfortunately. One users experience (generally related to how the install went for the user) can differ significantly.
I'll get some photos up of mine at next opportunity. But I cannot complain at the moment. It's the best TGSP I've had for edged screen phones (of which the S9+ is my second after the S7). Sorry it didn't work out for you man.

Does the zagg curve down and cover the whole thing, or is it right where the edge tapered off like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Tempered-Gla...&sr=8-1&keywords=galaxy+s9+plus+full+adhesive

It curves somewhat down the sides but not enough to interfere with cases. I'll get some photos up in a bit.

Yes there is a black border. With the edge panel set to default width it obscures 95% of the 'grab' area.

I'll be honest, the more I'm using it now, the more I'm noticing that black border. If they had made the edges clear it would have been perfect. I can't complain about everything else though, it's still a great alternative to the only other full adhesive option in my opinion.

I've just read on Reddit that apparently the product has been recalled. I wonder if it's anything to do with its design and those black borders.

I pulled up their support chat and asked about it.
"(09:38:03 PM) Jenn: At&T was told to send them to us because we sold out first and we needed them haha"
Why would they put the black border on the sides?!?! Come on Zagg get it together. I'm a long time Zagg customer, but with the S8+ I chose to use film protectors due to not many TGSP options. I thought there was finally going to be a good product from them. **sigh**
