[Q] Will the palm pre's touchstone be able to charge the N4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The touchstone is a QI standard inductive charger so it should work right?

This is what the general consensus is, but won't know for sure until we get one. I ordered a couple of them for 5 bucks just in case.

I think it should work, the problem however will be that the Phone won't stay on the touchstone, because the Nexus 4 doesn't seem to have magnets in the back of the device (That beeing said it shouldn't be too hard to mod the touchstone).
It seems like the official Dock uses rubber to make the phone stay in position.

Verge video stated that it does indeed have magnets both in the phone and the charger. The rubber? surface is simply to keep it from scratching.

This is what I had read too. That is does have magnets. Never used a palm pre or anything like this with wireless charging other than my tooth brush. I wonder how strong it is? Like will I notice there is a magnet holding the phone to the wireless dock when I pick it up?

looks like its strong enough to hold it up in the car if its placed upside down you can google pictures of it inside a car. i can link photos yet

That's cool. I didn't think about the magnets being strong enough to hold up in car. Let's hope so. Like this picture.

It has been confirmed by Androidcentral's Admin that Touchstone will NOT work on Nexus 4.

It's pretty cool. I hate Samsung's attempts to milk what few Galaxy Nexus users there were by coming up with a different (and super expensive) dock for every possible situation they could think of, instead of making one flexible dock.
Also, why are you buying Touchstones? We don't even know how much the ball costs yet.

People were buying Touchstone docks because they're like $5 and if it turned out they would work, they were afraid the cost would jump up.
And yeah, we DO know how much the ball will cost. $50-55.

thanks for saving me $5 :good:

It would've been hilarious if the charging portion of the Touchstone worked, but the magnet was flipped so it repelled the Nexus 4.

I bet the coil in the touchstone can be reversed. Still doesn't guarantee it will charge.

Will NOT Work!
I had a GS3 International and got the verizon inductive charging back for it. Worked flawlessly with all Qi compatible transmitter pads like the Energizer ones. However, the Palm Touchstone is NOT Qi compatible. Hence its a no go for the Nexus 4.
I am very interested in the Fatboy pillows though. Are they out for sale yet? The colors are quite interesting compared to the plain black orb from Google.

Confirmed by android central. palm will not work with nexus 4. Hopefully google sells one for less than 20 bucks.!

No, you THINK you know. Until you can provide a link with official pricing details, it's speculation just like everything else. Googles been putting "break-even" prices on all its newest devices, who's to say they won't surprise with a cheaper dock solution too?

The link to the definitive android central "no".

google car dock question

does any know if the car dock sold on the google site fit mounting the nexus one using a gel skin? im sure everyone knows this gel skin. the very flexible rubbery one. if you have the car dock from the google site and use one of these gels please let me know how it fits in the holder! i dont want to find the gel is too thick and wont fit and have to remove it each time or dont want it to pinch the rubber over time making a hole on the gel.
many thanks to those who reply!!!
ahh please ignore this thread as i googled many images of general cheap car docks but finally found the official one with a very nice image of the inner holder. there is little pins to connect to the bottom of the phone so im guessing the phone must be without a case or skin.
I would assume that any casing will not work with the car dock. I haven't actually tried, but the desktop dock (which I do own) never worked, not even with nothing more than an Invisishield skin on my phone. I had to pull it off to get consistent connectivity.
So, I'm sort of basing what I think on the design of the desktop dock...it's pretty clear Google didn't even consider that people would want to protect their phones anywhere but on the screen itself.
I did get a pretty sweet car dock at Best Buy that has worked wonderfully.
ah yes thank you. i agree they should of considered this but then again its also part of the case itself for blocking the bottom. you actually also answered another question i thought about, was considering an invisable sheld but glad you posted your experince with that too. and i would of totally paid for the desktop dock but i rather have protecting on my phone. oh well.
The dock is very tight.you wont be able to use a skin.i free ball with my phone with the included case and mine is fine

Micro HDMI ports need to just go away

I've been through 4 cables, and two xooms because of them. The first two cables just didnt work, and the third one a room mate tripped on and broke both the cable and the port on the xoom. Now last night I was watching tv on my xoom, and the casing for the cable just kinda fell apart. I tried fixing it by pushing it back together because I was at a friend's house and we were watching tosh.0, but it just made the contacts in the cable go all over the place. Now I'm afraid I may have busted this xoom too, because two of the contacts are stick out a little bit.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. But I really like my HDMI cable for mine. But the only thing I dislike about it is that the sound out of my surround sound sucks.
yeah the sound quality can be iffy sometimes, that's on the xoom side though i think. Monoprice is replacing the cable again, I'm just super worried about the xoom. I bought it because of HDMI, it's a required feature for me.

I recall reading your horror story about your friend"s room mate tripping over your cable. Sorry for such bad luck. But these things are delicate.
Really the fact that the dock doesn't include the mini HDMI is pitiful, and your situation is a perfect illustration of why that oversight needs to be fixed.
I'm using the original Motorola cable, and have not had any problems. Saying it should "Just go away" makes no sense, as there is no alternative that'll fit in the case of the Xoom.
I mean these stupid delicate ports need to go away. How is it that I've dropped my phone with micro USB cables plugged into it multiple times and both the port and the cables are still fine?
Also, how much did the moto cable cost, and how long is it
It's $20 and about 4 inches I think.

4 feet? that...just seems useless, especially at 20 bucks. monoprice cables are USUALLY super high quality, i've been using their micro usb's forever with nothing like this happening. It's a 10 foot cable for 5 bucks, gold plated and all that.
I dunno. Two Xooms? And you've dropped your phone "multiple times"? Sounds like you might be a bit rough on this equipment.

You've probably spent $20 on those 4 crappy cables. If you got the good cable to begin with, you wouldn't be in this situation. Cable has nothing to do with the port or how poorly you handle your devices.
Also, Micro USB != Micro HDMI
i purchased one, the others have been free replacements.
Not everyone can have their xoom in a forcefield with a mind control ui, so they never ever have to touch it or take it anywhere like you.
I'll also throw out there that my evo's hdmi port has been around longer and is still fine, so maybe it's just motorola that's screwing up.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Droid X. The DX's hdmi out is only supported within specific apps. It won't just "mirror" your droids' screen onto a TV like the Xoom does.
Youtube and the like use it as long as the cable is plugged into it. There are apps on the market that will accomplish this though. It's a limitation in the Droid X's hardware somewhere that does not allow simultaneous images, so the apps will just put it on your TV screen, which makes touching icons a guessing game.
Really? You have broken it that many times and its not your fault? I find that hard to believe. Take care of your stuff!

No really though, I've got my genesis from my child hood, an immaculate dvd and blu-ray collection, my xoom has no scratches or anything on it, etc. I do take care of my stuff.
Hi all,
I have to say i really have no issues with the micro HDMI to HDMI cable at all but then i did buy the Motorola one which wasn't cheap but as usual you tend to get what you pay for in life. I connect mine straight to my monitors HDMI port and run Audio out from the monitor to my JBL powered sub woofer and 4 speakers i watch all my live and catch up TV and my downloaded US TV shows all in great quality and sound.
I also really don't get a lot of the complaints i see about the Xoom all over the place though as my screen is bright clear and sharp but then i have my screen brightness set to full and have Auto brightness disabled. I admit the one time i tried Auto brightness the screen was horrible so i just don't use it. I also don't see any lag or stutter but then i am using ADW EX as my launcher and with the Widgets and apps i use have everything i need on just one screen and for me the Xoom is working perfectly. I actually bought my Xoom as my desktop went nuts and i needed something quickly and for what i need it for the Xoom has totally replaced my desktop sure I'd like to see Moto give us Euro users updates faster and enable the SD card but for now i can afford to wait.

... or it could be that yes, you're just clumsy. I fly at least twice a week and my Xoom goes everywhere- the office, the home, the hotel (hell, it's with me in Mexico now) and I'm just not getting how you're managing to break the thing. When it's time to go I just toss it into my briefcase and go; no special handing necessary (except the gel case; perhaps you should get one?).

It's not my xoom that's breaking.
I got my fifth replacement cable in the mail yesterday and the port on the xoom is fine. however, like two other cables ive had, the micro hdmi end on it is flimsy and loses connection.
My first xoom broke because a friend's room mate tripped on the cable, ripping it on the xoom, and busting the port on it that way.
This is my second xoom, and my first one was faulty anyway in that it randomly rebooted and the charging light couldnt turn green.

Wireless Charging - Rant

Am I the only one that finds it ridiculous that 2 yrs+ after the Palm Pre debuted with wireless charging, using a device (the Touchstone) that won the 2009 Engadget Best Gadget of the Year award, and some other international design awards, no other phone manufacturer has adopted the technology? The Pre charged very rapidly on the Touchstone. It held the phone in place with magnets (fantastic for use as a car dock), and even angled the phone for excellent viewing angle. Best of all, it did all of this with a replacement cover that added no size to the phone. Palm got it right the first time, why can't anyone duplicate (or license the technology)?!? Here's a video of the Palm Touchstone in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpfQSLBezn4
Rant over.
Perhaps patent issues? Not exactly sure...I started that on my evo before it became cool. Additionally, people aren't taking advantage of the technology, like nfc, so much more can be done with it. Though you just have to let manufacturers get their priorities in order.
Isn't the s3 wireless kit supposed to ship September?
I feel your pain tho, I'm waiting to give them my money too

I disagree it was the only good idea. It was their best, though. I also miss the ability to switch from app to app like shuffling cards, without having to hold the home button down. Pre had the most elegant multitasking/switcher I've yet come across.
There was a very interesting article a month or so ago about the implosion of Palm generally. The consensus seems to be that Verizon helped killed the Pre b/c its sales people were pushing the Droid. Palm didn't/couldn't/wouldn't win over the sales people. If people don't buy the phone, devs don't develop for it, and people don't buy the phone. If Pre could have debuted before the Droid, and didn't have such crappy hardware, it would have had a chance. I still prefer the portrait keyboard to the Droid style. But with Swype and Dragonspeak, I've gotten over needing to have a physical keyboard.

I will wait till September. I'm sure Samsung's wireless charging will be expensive, but can't be as expensive as buying a Pixie and flying to Ohio. On the up side, though, the angled Touchstone beats a flat charging mat......
Thanks for posting!
There has to be some DIY directions out there. The Pixi cover and Touchstones are dirt cheap too. I'd much rather use the Touchstone than a flat "power mat" type thing.
If someone sees instructions, please post. I have 3 Touchstones laying around.
Touchstones for $14 on eBay (with cable and wall plug):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-PALM-TO...pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item337212b899&_uhb=1
You can buy touchstone alone for about $5, but the cable is critical because most third party USB cables did not fit inside the very small back port to the Touchtone.
Palm Pixi Touchstone battery doors are available for $5.40 on eBay (free shipping):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-PALM-PI...ries&hash=item3f115d2477&_uhb=1#ht_3218wt_922
Now we just need instructions.

Nexus 4 Charging Case

Been looking for something like this for quite sometime but couldn't find it anywhere, hence posting here.

http://www.mophie.com/mophie-juice-pack-air-iPhone-4-4S-battery-case-p/1145_jpa-ip4-blk.htm
Any idea where can I find one for N4?
I've been thinking the same thing myself. My only concern is that as the iPhone is so widely available that the accessories will be made for it, but will a company make accessories for a platform with such a wide range of devices?
These r available for Samsung phones too, since they r popular as well. But then again, so is N4.. I just hope we get such a case. I used to carry one with 4s and it was really very handy, compared to portable battery packs.
Charging Case
I have never seen a case like this before. I have been waiting for a hardback card carrying case. But if something like this became available I would defiantly get this instead.
I liked the rugged protection of the PRO case and how they redirect the speaker to the front of the phone. So annoying holding your hand against the back of your phone to try and hear things better
These types of cases are notorious for breaking your USB port in your phone. However, I'd LOVE to have a Qi version of one of these things. Then it shouldn't add a significant amount of height to your phone, mostly just thickness as expected.
I have used such a case for 4s for over a year.. I surely stopped working after that but it was for $ 20 only so u cannot complain really.

Hi-
We've recently added the USB power out port on selected versions of our chargers - primarily the thinner lighter versions. You can charge any devices up to 2A. The Nexus version we've made in a 1250 & 2500mah slim (15mm) version - besides the standard 5000mah version which is 21mm thick. The thinner versions are much lighter as well - less than 1/2 the weight.
What are you looking for in terms of features/price?
Here are the Nexus 4 versions:
custompowersolar.com - produtcs - LG
We make the cases using 3D printing, so can be easily customized. You can get a full color image printed on the case with our Sculpteo partner. Devlivery time is typically 5-10 days depending on options - many units we have in stock.
We also make versions for iphone5 in 1500mah and 5000mah, Galaxy S3, HTC DNA, iphone 4/4s, iPad and iPad Mini.
All models also can be purchased with a camera/tripod mount - 1/4-20 screw holes on the side & bottom for easy attachment to a tripod.
The X Bracket allows you to mount any smartphone to a tripod - we also have a ball swivel, bike mount, and hang glider mount.
If you have something special you want, contact us - we're having too much fun designing and building products with 3D printers.
Any one have experience with these cases I'm thinking about trying one

Car Dock for Bumpered NX4

I've seen lot's of great recommendations for Car Docks for the Nexus 4 without the bumper, and even then most of them don't have USB to dock and go, so I wanted to ask, does anyone know of a car dock that (like the cheap infuse dock) has the USB plug and also fits the Nexus 4 with the bumper on?
Thanks!
Brodit/Proclip have a dock for Nexus 4 with official bumper. It's pricey, but I use it and it's perfect.

Hello,
I'm using that one. That's a very flexible car dock to use different phones in diffterent cars. I used the HTC HD2 (naked and also with bumper), HTC Desire HD (naked and also with bumper), Galaxy Nexus (incl. flip case) and the Nexus 4 (naked and Ringke Fusion case) in that car dock. I'm really satisfied using that car dock for 2 years now.
Maybe this one is similar and the Nexus 4 incl. bumper should fit.

This doesn't have the USB as part of it but it's a great solution to those of us that change phones and/or cases every now and then. I've used it so far with my Vibe, Sensation, GS3, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 all with and without cases. It's adjustable but looks fantastic even if it is overly priced. Great permanent solution IMHO.

Sorry, the one I'm using doesn't have integrated USB. Only the models strictly built for the Nexus 4 have a dock.
This is what I have: http://www.proclipusa.com/store/pro...le-holder-for-devices-with-a-case-246824.aspx
It has a range of 6mm - 10mm depth. The phone's depth is 9.1mm. With my Poetic Borderline Bumper Case I measured 11mm, however it still fits perfectly.
This is with the integrated dock, but only works with the N4 + OEM Bumper: http://www.proclipusa.com/brodit-de...d-cigarette-lighter-adapter-512488-19162.aspx
Good luck on your hunt!

I have the Kropsson Aero but not the N800, which has integrated usb charging and other ports as well as a led lighting IIRC. A tad expensive and not portable like the Airframe. Also a little more expensive but well built. It ships from Korea, it took 3 weeks for my item to come in from there to the USA. Just food for thought.
I initially dismissed it because based on the size, it may not fit. But if it did fit, there wouldn't be a pass through for the USB on the bottom claw. But looking at the pics, there seems to be an opening. Maybe whoever wants to buy one, email the seller to ensure it can fit?
