How long will we have to wait for 4.2?? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
the nexus 7 is my first nexus device (although I am drooling at the nexus 4 ),
but I was just wondering if anyone else, who has owned a different nexus device, could tell me how long you normally have to wait for the next version of android?.
Thanks in advance
Cheers

Some of the features will be available on the Nexus 7, some won't and you'll need to get a whole new device costing a small fortune to get the full update. It might break things along the way without giving you a way back.
....but then I remember it's Android and not Apple!

..... I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say here.
Being part of the whole Nexus line, there's a good chance we'll get 4.2 pushed out when the Nexus 4 and 10 get released. Google will be keen to have its flagship line all under the same version.

I agree. Google made it pretty clear (to me at least) that the Nexus line will be receiving the 4.2 update. There was absolutely no mention of Nexus 7 not receiving certain aspects of the update. I would say that Nexus 7 would receive the update the same day the 4 and 10 are released as well.

This is a joke for you guys who don't get it. All Nexus devices get updated I think. I think even old ones like the Nexus S and all that.

Lol well if he meant it as a joke it didn't read like one. Especially since a new device owner was asking about something he deemed a legit concern. If it was meant as a joke then my fault.

I agree. Pretty dumb answer to someone asking a legitimate question.

Google was supposed to release the 4,2 update on October 29th, but according to Asus it has been delayed ever so slightly.Asus says to expect an update to android 4.2 very soon.

My friend is still on stock N7 and got the update within a week. My dad is still on his stock S3 and the update won't come till next year.
Edit: I'm referring to 4.1.2 and 4.1.

I think you are confusing 4.1.2 with 4.2.
As far as I know, no one will have 4.2 before 13 November.

Expect android 4.2 on November 11th to November 12th on the nexus 7

Hi,
Thanks heaps guys, as long as we with the n7 arnt left in the lurch for weeks after the update comes out on the n4
My friend has a nexus s, and he had to wait a few weeks after 4.1 was released before he got it, but our devices are newer I suppose
Thanks

Unless you sideload, don't expect it on the 13th. OTA rolling updates can take up to a couple of weeks.

Got a reliable source on that? I'm guessing no because it's not true. Google has never released an OS on the day it was announced, and when they announce a new device, they never release the OS for older hardware until the new device is available. So the correct answer is to expect the update in the weeks following the N4/N10 release. Hopefully it will be out within a week, but it can take longer.

Google has said they will start rolling out 4.2 from Nov 11th, 2 days before new devices release.

New to a nexus. update question

This is my first nexus device, I was just wondering what the normal time frame would be for me to expect a 4.2 update once it is announced? I'm actually not all that anxious because I'm still loving 4.1.2, but just curious how these updates usually work time wise.

it can be anywhere from the day its announced, to about a month after. usually its available in aosp pretty quickly after the first devices being sold hits the market, sometimes right before. if your waiting to take the ota route, then it usually released after several weeks to a month after the first 4.2 devices become available.
Sweet thanks for the info

[Q] Missed Nexus 4 in Canada again! What should I do?

OK so I was at work and missed the chance to get the nexus 4 again! Supposedly gonna take 7-8 weeks now to ship according to mobilesyrup. NOw if I do get the chance to get the Nexus 4 again in a couple weeks, I will recieve it in March or Feb. My question is that is it worth it to get a November phone in Feb? Now I have a **** lg xenon and gossip which I could last out till next year for the Nexus 5, or I might get the s4. Should I wait?
What is expected from Nexus 5 and S4
-1080p screen
-10-12mp camera
-2ghz processor estimate
-2gb ram or maybe 2.5-3gb
-5inch screen
-Quad core maybe more?
Overall I think the smartphone as we know it is going through a transition phase so should I wait? I don't have enough money to get a new phone every year like some people. I buy a phone for 2-3 years. Will I be stuck with old technology with this phone?
-WHAT THE FUUDGE SHOULD I DOOO????
Mod please move to q&a if you think that is were it should be!

You're asking us for advice to speculate on a phone that is unreleased (better yet, a year away)?
Yes, get the Nexus 5. Historically, a newer Nexus is better than an older Nexus. Might need confirmation on that though.

Only you can answer the question of whether you should wait. In Feb the nexus 4 will still be a great phone. Is only 3 months old on 2/13. You seem to think your current phone will last to next November for nexus 5. If you think that just wait.
In the end you have to use the device, no one can tell you what to like or what works for you. My wife thinks I'm insane buying a new phone every year. I don't, I like upgrading to the new nexus or whatever the new stock android experience is. Been that way since g1. Just what I like. Others will say go buy a note 2. Since this is the nexus forum you'll find no shortage of posts about how great the nexus 4 is.
Oh, please stop bumping the thread, it's annoying.

OMG. Dude, this is just a list of SAMSUNG devices. Nexus devices are GUARANTEED to get updates for at least two years. AT LEAST. You really think Google would stop giving updates to a device that was just release LAST YEAR?
I don't see why some people make such a huge deal about these updates. Sure they are nice to have, but they don't make or break a Nexus device.
I know when it will be released - when it's released.

Pretty sure the N7 will get KLP somehow, be it by the wonders of the devs at XDA or by those at Google. I prefer the former over the latter, though. Stock has never suited me.
Wow. It's not like this hasn't been asked numerous times.
Will it get KLP? Assuming that will be the official name, it's likely that it will. The N7 is still well within the support life cycle for updates. Eben if it wasn't, the dev community is more than capable of cooking something from AOSP.
When will it come? Sometime after Google I/O. No one has a crystal ball and can forecast this far out what day Google is going to push the update or release the source.

Samsung is known to be slower than most when it comes to updates for all of their devices. Its been like this for years and is not likely to change anytime soon. On the flip side, when samsung finally does realease updates, most of the time they are generally less buggy and are more stable than others.

@janjannsen99 : You are mixing up your devices and genders.
1.The original flagship Galaxy Tab 10.1 never got Jellybean. There is still a petition for it on the first page of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forum:

I'm rather peeved about this delay also. We paid for the MOST EXPENSIVE version of the tablet, and we get treated like stepchildren.
I bet Verizon is behind this with their 800 lb gorilla "fart and the world thanks you" attitude about approving updates and devices. The negative of a single-SKU device. Waiting on some monkey in a Verizon office to decide the update is kosher.

Given that the Nexus 4 is also delayed, it likely has something to do with cellular radio firmware, rather than anything involving Verizon. Just a guess, though.

i just rooted on saturday and am still on the latest 4.3, any idea if OTA is a bad idea?
I was so confused because Phandroid.com states that "It’s worth noting that Google specifically mentions “Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 versions with mobile data,” so if you’ve got a WiFi only device or don’t currently have service, you probably won’t be seeing an update in the immediate future." So I'm assuming they are wrong... (not unusual).
