[Q] Nexus 4 camera specifications - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I know that the product is yet to have an official event for more in-depth look of the device, but when someone finds out exact specifications of the camera inside the phone, please share here. If it's around One X quality I would be fine with that.

Now that I know that HDR mode is there, all I'm hoping for now is a fast shutter speed/zero shutter lag. Having burst mode would be a nice bonus, haha.

Since the Galaxy Nexus already have all that, its safe to asume this one will have them too, some of that are just software implementation. It will also have a sphere (360) mode.

If this is true that would be a nice upgrade from the galaxy nexus. Can you point to the source of this info? Too many smartphone reviewers just compare images as a whole, mostly comparing default exposure & saturation settings. Real camera comparisons should be more like digital camera reviews, looking at 100% sections for noise under low ISO and high ISO. Also whether the picture is sharp from corner to corner. Everything else is software magic.

The Moto G camera: noise reduction is the key

Here are some details I uncovered in regards to the camera of Moto G:
Camera specification:
- 5mpxl
- f/2.4
- 4mm focal length.
Most definitely a small sensor, (< 1/3.2' ), likely 1/4'. Also very likely won't have BSI for better low light performance.
Meanwhile there's no good teardown (yet) to find out the make of the camera module, by going through the spec sheets of many other phones, the sensor is likely to be same one you find in Lumia 625.
Most of you will probably agree that Moto G doesn't take good photos. Meanwhile the optic is the best it should be well capable of better.
Issue at the moment is that there's TOO MUCH noise reduction, which can cause a very 'water-paint' feel to the pictures, and destroying any form of sharpness.
From my test with stock and many other camera apps (Lenovo, focal, a better cam, etc etc), while they help with the compression, focus, white-balance and metering etc. and can help the quality of the photos. They don't fix the sharpness/noise reduction issue with the camera. It seems like it's been hard-coded into the software for the camera.
Are there anyone out there who will be able to fix this?
The Motorola camera app was updated today, has this improved the noise reduction?

Google seems to be working on a completely overhauled Hardware Abstraction Layer for the cameras that will allow apps to tap more directly into the camera pipelines. They'll be able, for instance, to get RAW captures and and do their own custom demoisacing/debayering and the whole post- pipeline. That would probably fix any heavy-handed processing done by any of the OEMs.

RAW just gives an uncompressed image, there's no real guarantee that no processing takes place..
I'm going to report my findings on the new moto camera update. From the look of it it's just a routine, general update that shouldn't make much difference.

Not really. RAW is much more than an uncompressed image, it's as close to the raw, unprocessed sensor output as possible. No demosaicing, no tone mapping/gamma, no conversion from (typically) 12 bits per pixel to 8 bits, no processing and no lossy compression. If any of this is done, then it isn't RAW.

camera awesome is amazing and vignette its very good try with this app's u can get a better pic from stock cam

I installed the original app 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4, none of them has the HDR

I wasn't able to post before/after comparison with the stock camera app as it updated itself. So far I'm not seeing any different image wise between the update.
I've done some comparison shots in between the cameras, and added in my Ativ S (GS3 WP8 alter-ego) as a bonus.
Snap Camera focus very well, and I was able to take good shots with my shaky hands. However, the blurring issue is very apparent with all camera apps..
N.B. The Focal photo was slightly blurred due to my shaky hands, sorry!

SlashGear have posted an article on the Camera software update released by Motorola.
This update does a tiny bit to improve all areas of shooting with manual controls, and shows sign that Motorola isn’t going to let this device fall by the wayside at all, whatsoever.

I dunno Slashgear articles seems iffy...
Moto G ALREADY had the Exposure/Focal Ring tbh, seems they didnt notice or use it in their original review. This exposure/focus ring is the basis of their camera comparison it seems.
I did not find options to manual focus and exposure.

It's just the ring that you can drag around the screen to choose the point of focus and exposure. I'm sure that we (at least I did!) had this from the beginning on Moto G (maybe the X didn't and that's where the stories are coming from?) and the recent update was basically bug fixes for us.

Yes, I just used the trial for the comparison.
Note that XDA compresses the image so it's very hard to tell from the photos I posted.
But the Moto-G is absolutely no match for the camera on my Ativ-S/GS3. Not sure if it will fair better if the noise reduction issues been fixed.
But Snap Camera seem to do the best job out of the apps I've tried, for my shaky hand of course. Not compared the HDR mode yet but stock camera do that quite well.

Camera apps rarely make any significant difference in quality, unless they start passing different parameters/settings to the camera HAL.
Usually, if you see major changes in camera performance, it's HAL changes, which require a system firmware update.

I'm guessing that we'll get the Camera HAL v3 with Kit Kat 4.5. I mean, that's the kind of feature that would justify a version bump. Hopefully the hardware will be compliant enough that it won't have to run in the Limited Semantics mode.

yes I wonder if they haven't finalized their software for it or if you should only turn it on in certain situations or what.
Anyways, I haven't seen many videos but here's one that shows the super steady and well exposed video the G3 can shoot, along with no audio issues. Pretty impressive for indoors video so far:

Looking good, the audio cancellation issues aren't great, but I hope it is software related somehow. I really dig the "magic focus" feature. Much better implementation than HTC.
The real question is if they have improved the camera in low-light conditions with moving objects. The LG G2 stock camera suffered BADLY in trying to shoot pictures of moving objects in low light conditions.
In addition, the stock G2 camera denoising algorithm was way too aggressive leading to watercolor-like pictures, again especially in low-light.
Glad they tried to address the slow focus issue with the G2 by implementing laser focus.

Photographer here -- unfortunately, in low light with ANY smartphone you'll have difficulty capturing a moving object. With low light, you require a longer shutter speed, and depending on how fast the object is moving, you're guaranteed to have blur. Whether your phone is hand held or on a tripod does not matter -- the motion is relative to the camera, not the camera itself.
In low light to be able to effectively capture a moving object with no blur you will need a large sensor camera (e.g. DSLR APS-C or m4/3) and fast (large aperture) lens. Smartphones have small sensors and can't capture as much light which therefore requires lengthening the shutter speed to allow enough light in to expose the scene properly. Similarly, they can't use higher ISO (sensitivity) to keep the shutter speed short either due to having excessive noise at comparable ISO levels.
The exception to this is a good flash. With a good flash you can use a faster shutter speed and be able to "freeze motion" better. Of course, the flashes on phones are underpowered and will only help you out if you're reasonably close to whatever you're trying to capture.
Just to give some examples, in lower light situations small sensor cameras pretty much have to use a 1/30s or longer shutter speed. Any object that's moving faster than a snail's pace will therefore have blur. On the other hand, with a large sensor camera and fast lens, you can realistically increase your ISO to say 6400 if you have a fast moving object and set your shutter speed to 1/200s and fire away.
Another issue is that we really don't have effective control over shutter speed on smartphones. Hopefully this will come eventually with Android's new API (along with RAW support). Sure, most people don't know how to shoot in manual mode but for those who do it's very helpful. I believe many phone manufacturers include a "sports" or "action" mode that will prioritize shutter speed over ISO (and no idea if the G2 has a similar mode), but still there's only so much it can do with a small sensor in a situation where the physics just aren't in its favor. Smartphones are great in good light, but if low light is a priority, a dedicated camera is the only solution.

With all that said, what do I think of the G3's camera so far? Well first off, OIS is critical when you're not shooting outdoors and not using a tripod (due to the shutter speeds as I explained above). No other Android flagship has OIS which is quite a shame, so based on that the G3 is already starting ahead of the pack. The benefit of this is clearly demonstrated in PhoneArena's samples compared to the Galaxy S5. Due to the indoor lighting, the S5's shots appear to lack detail because of the blur induced by a long shutter speed that's not stabilized optically. Meanwhile, the G3's are tack sharp. Their samples are more of a "real world" demonstration compared to many smartphone camera reviews where they have the indoors shots stabilized on a tripod. Having the phones on a tripod eliminates the reviewer's shaky hands from affecting results, but it also hides the necessity of OIS for low light photos. 99% of the time we're not using a tripod with our smartphones.
From samples I've seen so far, LG appears to have gotten their software processing down pretty well -- way better than the G2. White balance and exposure seem to be handled well, and photos seem to have better saturation than the G2.
The G3 also appears to have a wider angle lens than the S5, and I appreciate that its sensor is 4:3 rather than 16:9. 16:9 may fill up your entire screen when framing the shot, but if shooting in landscape mode you're really losing out on vertical height (and vice versa if oriented in portrait you're not getting much horizontally). The G3 without a doubt fits more into the frame due to both the lens angle and 4:3 aspect ratio.
With the OIS and good software processing, at this point the G3's camera looks to be the most promising of any Android device. I'll wait for more samples to make a firm conclusion, but again, the G3 is more compelling than anything else right now.

HTC One M7 also has it, M8 lost it coz it didnt play well with the duo camera setup apparently.
My view on G3,Sorry to break ice about camera but here are facts :
1. There is no laser in g3 but laserish IR light that gets detected by camera to focus for near objects.
2. No practical use in daylight.
3. Useless to detect & focus on far objects - let's check when reviews comes for range. Depends on how powerful ir included.
4. Same camera hardware except Lewis software promotion.
These are simple practical physics facts of camera working.

Video Stabilisation / Video Quality

I have been wading through all the YouTube videos trying to get an idea if the ZTE Axon 7 will be my next phone and I find this
I am totally suprised at how good the OIS / EIS is working and it looks to me very similar to the S7 and iPhone 6s+ stabilisation.
If anyone has the phone please let us know what you think and if you can post some video capture in 1080p that would be great to.

I don't know as in the UK it's still not released yet
OIS is hardware and EIS is the electronic image stabilisation in the software. It looks floating like an iPhone or Samsung s7 but I would compare it more to the iPhone 6s plus but as someone already commented it is hunting for focus too much. Let's hope we can lock focus at least until they release the promised updates.....lol. Zte updating a phone. I think we will have more luck with custom roms if they unlock the bootloader!

The phone has both OIS and EIS, that's why the "dual OIS" part should say "dual IS". Both OIS and EIS mechanisms are built into the sensor module, but while EIS is performed on the sensor, the OIS is performed by the SoC taking the reading from the 2-axis gyro (haven't seen any specs indicating more than that) and driving the (most likely VCM) motors in the module.
The auto-focus hunt in the video is too much, hope it can be locked, it made me nauseated
No info on what sensor it is now that is interesting. Knew the glass would be cheap but that's the way it goes on a cheap phone.
Overall looks quite good to me compared to the op3.
The pocket now review found that OIS is not so good and if you enable EIS, it gets worse. In the end they called it ambitious but flawed.

Workaround to increase Camera Photo quality

I am aware that our Mix uses a 1/3.06" 16MP Omnivision Sensor with a Pixel size of the measly 1um. But the Huawei Mate 9 has a similar sized sensor (1/2.9" 12MP sensor with a pixel size of approx. 1.25um.) and shoots really great pics. Obviously Huawei may have used a latest generation Sony sensor with Leica's optics which will blow the Omnivision away. Even the cheapest Sony sensor would outperform an Omnivision any day.
My question is, will shooting images at a lower resolution like 12MP on the Mix give us better results? I'm not expecting Mate 9 like results as the phone's camera was never a priority when I bought this device. But would this help reduce noise or give us better results compared to shooting at 16MP? I am noticing lower noise when shooting at 13MP on Open camera compared to shooting at 16MP.
Does shooting at a lower resolution increase the Pixel size from 1um? Or is it strictly something to do with the sensor? Does the sensor behave the same either way and are we just getting cropped images when shooting at lower resolutions?
I've read in a few places that the sensor is fully utilized regardless but shooting at lower resolutions can reduce noise. If I can at least get half decent 12MP images compared to noisy unreliable 16MP ones, I wouldn't mind shooting at lower resolutions. Of course I am not expecting ground breaking image quality.
Some older Sony phones like the Xperia Z2 used to have a default mode which clicked images at 8MP even though the effective sensor resolution was 21MP. Sony claimed that the lower resolution gave batter images especially lesser noise. I am referring to something like this.
Hope someone can explain this.

The answer to your question is no, reducing the resolution will not increase your image quality. The sensor always takes full-resolution image. Reducing resolution is a post-processing function and is no different than reducing resolution on the computer. Note that there are a few cameras with special low-resolution modes that are supposed to improve either the image or performance in certain ways. But when you have these modes you know it because they’re selling features of the camera.
There is now a significant amount of information available publically demonstrating that image quality depends on sensor size and sensor efficiency only. The number of pixels doesn’t matter. When printed at the same print size, images from the same sized sensor exhibit the same amount of noise regardless of resolution.

Thanks for clearing this! So it may have been placebo that the images shot at 12MP seemed to be less noisy to me. Lol!
I use Open Camera which seems to produce brighter images compared to the stock camera. I'm sure these 3rd party apps aren't magically making the sensor capture more light compared to the stock app. I've noticed that these apps automatically crank up the display brightness to max as soon as they are launched. There may also be some real-time processing involved which makes the images appear brighter and slightly better compared to the stock app.
I am considering getting the Sony Alpha QX1 (with inter-changeable lenses) or the older QX100 which would make the Mix perfect! These lens style cameras attach to the phone and transfer images directly to the phone via NFC pairing. Just wondering whether the mix is too wide for the bracket on the lenses. The QX1 has the same APS-C sensor utilized on some of Sony's Alpha range and the QX100 has the 1" BSI sensor used on the RX100II. Only downside is that none of them can do 4K video.

The smallest one should work perfectly with the phone. I had the QX-100 and it didn't fit the note 4 out of the box.

Seems to be quite expensive just for an attachment. If it didn't fit the Note 4, it most definitely won't fit the Mix. So I guess that attachment is a must and when you add the price of the QX1's body + Lens + the attachment, it doesn't seem to be worth it. Ofcourse, the images would blow away even the best of mobile cameras.
Only if it was priced right!
I have the QX-30, the tablet mount is a must unless you plan on not attaching it to the phone. It makes the overall portability not so great, you're probably better off just getting a full blown dedicated camera but the QX-1 might be good, just make sure to buy one of the lenses otherwise you can't do anything, the SELP1650 might be decent I think.
Also if you're thinking of getting the swiveling rotation mount, don't bother, it's not compatible with the tablet mount.
For those who haven't tried RAW capture yet, stock camera works perfectly fine after activating the camera2 api. Just thought I should mention that since it's not such an uncommon issue.

Add the line "persist.camera.HAL3.enabled=1" at the end of your build.prop, then reboot. It goes without saying you either need a build.prop editor or like me, just use the text editor that comes with Root explorer for example. Next get a camera app that supports RAW, like Open camera or Manual camera.
[Edit] Remember to mount as read/write when you are in system folder, or your changes won't stick. Our build.prop has two empty lines at the bottom, so if you have added something at an earlier time, make sure you have one empty line at the end.

There is more to it than just RAW. Read up on camera2 features and what an api is. But to answer your question, no, it does not increase quality.

I downloaded camera FV-5 which support raw the option said that this phone does not support RAW, any idea?

Even though I know FV-5 has been praised for years, I've never bought it. I'm not a big snapper so I've often been content with manual modes on the stock cameras. But since I have recently gotten RAW capture going, I've contemplated loosely on paying for either Manual camera or Camera FV-5. All I've tried on the Mix so far, is Manual camera's compatibility app (which checks out), and taken some RAW pics with Open camera.
I'm going to check out some more apps soon.
Considering it is required for RAW capture, I reckon you have a paid version? I quickly tried the free one, and see only one instance of compatibility (under general photo settings). But there is nothing there. Do you get the message when you change picture output?
There is an option on the paid version but it's grayed out because of incompatibility, but there is
you don't improve the noise performance by taking a smaller resolution, you do that by downsizing from a large image.
I think the best method is to use a good manual setting, shoot in raw and then edit in post processing.
however I think the images aren't that reliable

On my desktop I use UFRaw and Gimp / Photoshop. But I haven't gotten any mobile apps to open my RAW images either. Weird.

Installed it, but crashing when try to tap to focus.. Autofocus doesnt work it self
I have it working, but I'm using the LOS 14.1 build 20.5.17 from here on XDA, not MIUI. Sorry but I didn't test stock ROM before flashing.

I've rated selfie cam average coz it's a mixed bag
In artificial lighting conditions it produces somewhat blurry images. In fact selfies in complete darkness with the screen flash look better than selfies in artificial lights such as tubelights, bulbs etc. Bokeh selfies are better with more details as compared to normal selfies.
I'm talking about selfies with 0 beautification.
I must admit that I'm coming from nexus 5 which has 1.2 mp front camera so maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the 20 mp cam of Poco f1!
Come to think of it, various hardware checking apps show front camera as 5 mp!
May be they are detecting secondary camera at the back as front camera...anyone knows any app that detects all 3 cameras (megapixel and sensor used) correctly??!
It is correct with 5mp. The Cam combines four Pixels top one Superpixel.
I thought it's detecting 5 mp is secondary back camera and mistaking it for front cam

So you mean the front camera is actually a 5 mp cam and it should be denoted as such in hardware info apps such as CPU X? This explains why the selfie quality wasn't much much better as I had expected. I'm not that impressed with this 4 pixel combining to form a Superpixel technology....at least in poor lighting conditions.
It would also mean that the secondary 5 mp camera at the back isn't mentioned in the information generated by such apps!
Shouldn't it be mentioned?

Noticed nowadays new camera unable to capture sharp pic for grp selfie
Grp selfie is where u at front n few members at the back to ensure everyone fit it in the picture
But what happen is only ur pic is sharp while the rest quite blur
This not happened during single lens with fix focus like s7 or 2016 model
How to fix this ?
I must admit that the selfies come out blurry when taken indoors especially when taken with volume rocker. It shakes up due to the press of the button. Do you guys face that?

I assume you might already be aware, they do have the option to use the fingerprint scanner as shutter.
Camera - Settings , scroll down and find it under Additional settings

It's the same with me also, even on the rear camera most of the pictures taken on artificial lighting conditions are blurry because of that shaking.

The youtube reviews were good regarding the front camera & even the photos were good. Were the review units different or the camera hardware in the 8gb+256gb?

I see the phone uses a 20MP sensor from Samsung.
This not a real 20MP camera...I mean, it can't be! Or it's very, VERY bad, even in natural light conditions.
The quality of selfies is way inferior to the 12MP sensor of the back camera.
The amount of details captured by it makes it look more like a 5-8MP sensor...

Nice travesty
It's pretty good considering Huawei and Samsung selfie are overfiltered and poor quality.
This one can see your pores and pixel bins to prevent noise.

You guys are completely crazy or have fault devices. The frontal camera is absolutely amazing. My girlfriend have a XS and its there's no comparison, F1 is much better in every way. You just need to turn off Beautiful Mode and increase sharpness on Options to make things more clear. It's one of the best selfie cameras that I ever see in my life. Get out of here you guys.
But there's a issue that Xiaomi need to fix. The camera dont focus acurately subjects at 1 meter from device. If you use Selfie Group Mode, the problem is gone.
The issue is with focus which is fixed at a distance of around 50cm. Beyond that, objects get blurred.
