Dilemma, please help guys! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Parents have just said they will get me the Nexus 4 for christmas if I like. My phone is upgradable in February next year, so my plan is as follows. This is my current setup:
£30 a month contract, 24 months
Galaxy S2
200 minutes
Unlimited texts
500MB data
Pay off the remaining months of this contract in feb, will not be anymore than £100.
8GB Nexus 4 at christmas from the parents.
I get a sim only contract, 12 months, at £15 a month.
Unlimited data
5000 texts
600 minutes.
Am I doing the right thing...??

I say so. The freedom of no contract is an amazing feeling.

I'm off-contract now, pre-paid sim + google voice = $30 a month and now a phone that is 299 off-contract... Win-win.

Why pay off the contract early? If you've been surviving on 500MB data and 200min for the last 20mths, and you think you can do so for another 4, then just have your service provider send you a micro-sim so you can use your current contract on the new phone. Saves you £100.

Yeah its unlocked, so just switch the simcard from one phone to another.
But those are some good plan compared to what we have to pay here in the States, unlimited data for 15pounds, wow.

the question is how much do you pay each month ?
Less than we do...
Well I personally pay £30 (about 45 usd) a month on a flext tarrif with £140 (220 usd) of allowance and unlimited data (3GB fair usage policy) on an 18 month contract and a free G1.
Not bad I don't think.

Yeah we just got the Dream about 4 months ago. Rogers(the only provider with android atm and 1 of the big 3) makes you wait 2 years before they will offer you any incentive to upgrade.
Bell/Tellus(the other 2 major telco's) aren't any better. Same 3 year contract, same 6.95 system activation fee every month tacked on top of your bill, same $0.75 911 fee tacked on every month. We also don't get Caller ID or Voicemail including in any voice plan. They have to be purchased extra($12 for the combo).
We get charged for incoming calls and incoming texts.
That 3yrs rule is only for average Canucks. I've been lucky enough to get HUPs from Rogers, going from a Bold to a Dream, a year in my current, for $99. Currently the Dream is at $29.99 since everyone is giving you some kind of $50 bonus with it. Really I don't even consider the contract binding. Yes I would have to pay $300 in ECF to break the voice and another $100 to break the data but I've already traded the Bold for spare Dream+$50 and a rooted Dream is worth $375+ each on craigs. On top of that I've got 500mb, 250min, 5pm & weekend free, unlimited text, vm, cid for <$46 after SAF and taxes, so it's not like I'm paying extra over the long term.
I do of course expect to flip to the next android when ever it comes to C. Sometimes I'm tempted to trade the pair for a Hero+$
Whats flext tariff?

say what you want about a contract but i dont think its to bad of a deal

Say what you guys want about having a contract but I know for me I enjoy having the internet no matter where I go without having to worry about connecting up my phone or finding a wifi hotspot.
Little tip..
Purchase the xoom under someone else's contract for a two year price. Do an assumption of liability to your own account to assume liability of that contract. A 1 year contract automaticly gets added to your account and gets rid of the 2 year contract.
I dont know about you guys but I a least plan on having this thing for a year. And for a 1 year contract. Not to shabby...
i dunno, saving my fingers from pushing a button on my phone isn't work spending $240. it's really not that hard.
I bought mine on contract because I always intend on having the 3g on. If I'm spending the extra skrilla on a 3g dvice, you bet your ass I'm gonna utilize it. I've got a dumbphone that costs a whole 9.99/month on our family plan and a tablet that costs 30/month(with the 9.99 extra line fee, bah), insurance on the Xoom and that's it. Not rocket science, I spent more on my OG Droid on contract over a year and three months than this thing.
I'm already paying for unlimited data on my phone contract, I'm sure as hell not going to pay for data on another device when I can just piggy back off my unlimited plan. Plus I saved £150 ($240) on the device by just ordering the wifi only model. (For those wondering, I got £50 off using a Dixons 10% off offer).
If I were to buy the 3G (no 4G in UK yet) Xoom for £600 then add say, £7.50 a month for 1GB of data for 12 months that's a total of £690.
In essence, I'm saving £240 ($385) over the year and I'm able to use more data than if I paid for another plan. That, to me anyway, is worth having to get my phone out and turn on the wireless access point if I need to.

That's why I got rid of my Droid and moved to the Xoom+dumbphone. I also don't have to charge my phone but once a week so it all works out. For me it's convenient because I always have WiFi around so I don't even need unlimited data, which is even more expensive anyways. I only ever used max of 1.4gb/month on my Droid and I'm using easily under 1gb of 3G data on my Xoom. I may not even upgrade to a 4G plan after the upgrade if I don't have to, I'm pretty happy with the 3G service for light browsing anyways.
so food for thought....
say you HAVE to have the wireless data plan. You get the 2 year contract price and save $200. You pay $20 a month for the 1gb data a month. After 2 years you will spend $480 in data charges minus the $200 you save since it was on contract equal a grand total of $280 for 2 years worth of data charges not bad. It averages to about $11.66 a month.

yeah thats what I stated. Its still not a bad deal, for someone that HAS to have a data plan on the xoom. 1gb per month is about $11.6. In comparison $5 gives you 250 text messages.

How much do you pay sprint every month?

How much do you pay?

I pay $30 for my line and $60ish for my girlfriends line, So $90 a month, can't beat that.
My line is a concession line because I'm an indirect dealer and my girlfriends line is in my name so she gets my 22% discount.

After taxes and surcharges I pay $176 a month,

Total after taxes 62.00
Been with sprint with for 15 years. Not going anywhere
Bought phone at bestbuy 199.99 but got free buyback which means that I get 40% of original price($650.00) when I trade it in next Feb. Ill keep doing the buy back every year cause it means bestbuy will pay me to use a phone for a year.

[Q] What UK Carriers Will Be Selling The Nexus 4?

My Contract Ends In December And I Was Wondering What Carriers Will This Be On? I Am On Orange (EE or something now) The Nexus 4 is Listed On O2's website.. But the signal for O2 here is terrible.
Anyone Know Anything?
Thanks.

He's a Brit, he's been brainwashed. New phone = New contract or paying a fortune off contract.
To the OP
If you can't afford the upfront costs save up. Or pay hundreds of pounds more.
The carrier contract lock in model is dead.
The quicker more people go to SIM only on rolling monthly deals the quicker the public get a better deal.
Looks like O2 will have an exclusive on this http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/01/o2_touts_extortionate_tariffs_for_nexus_4_exclusive/
I agree with Michael, get it on the play store. Get an interest free credit card or something and pay it off monthly if you can't afford the phone outright.
Most of the networks have some good SIM only deals that mean that you would be better off within 12 months.
The numbers speak for themselves:
Cheapest o2 Contract: £36 per month
Includes 16GB Nexus 4, unlimited texts & calls and 1GB data
Total cost £864
Nexus 4 off contact: £279.00
Thee UK contracts
200 minutes, 5000 texts, unlimited data = £9.90 p/m (2 years cost = £237.60)
600 minutes, 5000 texts, 1GB data = £12.90 p/m (2 years cost = £300)
600 minutes, 5000 texts, unlimited data = £15.90 p/m (2 years cost = £381.60)
If you don't need a lot of minutes, you can save yourself £347.10 over two years. You could buy the phone a second time and still have £70 spare! Think about that, if Google release a new phone at the same price point next year, you can buy it from what you've saved just by not going on contract (as you can actually do it, cause your not tied into a contract). Or buy a nexus 10, or 2 nexus 7s... it's that big a difference.
Even if you do need the minutes, you can save £285 with the same data cap you have on o2. If you only want the 8GB nexus you can save a further £40 as well (o2 don't offer this option). Also bear in mind that the longest of the three contracts is 12 months some are rolling 1 months so you can get out whenever you want.
Three aren't the only network either, GiffGaff do unlimited texts, unlimited data and 250 minutes for £10, or the same with 400 minutes for £15.
It means finding £280 upfront, but the number speak for themselves, you'd be mad not to!
EDIT: The really crazy part of the o2 contracts is that you can get a sim only contract from o2 themselves for £20p/m which includes unlimited texts & calls and 1GB data. So exactly what they are offering over two years, but only over 12 months, and £105 cheaper... right....

Post your up front and tariff costs

Vodafone UK for me.
£29.99 up front for the phone.
And a 24 month contract at £40 a month for unlimited minutes and texts with 10gb of data.
I've checked out some of the American/Canadian costs and it seems you get a real s**t deal over there when it comes to mobile phone contracts.
Preordered unbranded S7 Edge Black on Orange Romania's online shop. With Gear VR and an external battery of 2000mAh. All price: 790€ (about 870$) free of new contract.
Think O2 UK have robbed me £49.99 upfront and £49 a month for 5gb of data and unlimited minutes and texts
I'm with AT&T and was forced over to their Next program. Had to pay tax upfront ($77) with $15 upgrade fee added to my next bill. Then the cost of the phone is spread out over 30 monthly payments of $26.50 added to my monthly bill which is 5GB shared data with unlimited calling and text for a base price of $50 and a $25 access fee along with my wife's $40 access fee for her iPhone 6+. So my monthly bill is $50+$26.50+$25+$40 = $141.50.
Compared to what you guys are paying, we are definitely getting screwed in the US.

My tariff would be £50 a month but I get 20% off through work. Still, only 5gb for £50 a month isn't great. You could get twice that at Vodafone and pay £20 less up front.

They didn't mention the headphones, I got the Gear VR for free. Have a chat with them, as it is part of the Red 4G package. They did not say anything to me about it, until I was looking online. I had a chat to them via the webchat, and they sent through the links to activate once the phone gets delivered
800€ for phone (3*266€ on samsung site).
25€ for 5go(then reducted speed) / unlimited calling and text. (no engagment)
Will sell my old phone for 350€
So arround 1050€ (1150$/830£) for 2 years (44€(48$/35£) / month)
I bought the phone outright direct through the Samsung website. I use the £15 4GB Giffgaff tarriff. Cost over 24 months is £1000, which is cheaper than any other deal I could find from any other provider. There's a deal through carphone warehouse and o2 which works out as £1016 and you get 5GB data. I kinda thought about going for that one, but I'd also have to go through the hassle of moving my number over as well. I like a simple life.
44:99 per month and 0 upfront for 10GB data with EE. Bought from Mobile Phones Direct.
499CDN for the S7 Edge on Rogers for me. Plus 13% tax. Then $77+tax a month for a 5gb corporate plan.
Had 2 phones to upgrade with sprint. Pre-ordered today, will be around $32 a month for the S7 Edge on a 24mo plan (option to upgrade after 12 months on the new Galaxy Forever through sprint) and the 2nd phone an S7 at around $13 (had a buy 2 get one at 50% off for the S7). Was no up front costs right now but might have to pay taxes on them both once the phones are in, but i'm not sure.
I have went with an upgrade through CPW with EE.
S7 edge.
Unlimited call/texts and 5gb data.
£129.99 upfront and £37.49 a month.done through quidco so get £65 cash back.best deal I could find.

To be fair that works out around £55 a month after conversion, not much more than you'd pay here in the UK. What would you pay up front for the phone?
What do u mean upfront? We pay a month in advance for the plan but other than that $0 upfront for the phone
