Corning gorilla glass - Galaxy S III General

Is this true?
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/samsung
We have Gorilla Glass 2... but Note II get nothing..
There are reports about Note II getting scratches easily..
Im glad i chose s3.. If that's the case..
Any Opinion guys?

Galaxy s3 also gets easily scratched
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

specs I find say Note II will have GG2 as well.
my S3 does not scratch. and I beat the crap out of it not a single scratch. not even a light scuff. this glass truly amazes me
NOW if you work near "GRIT" such as carpenter or construction or roadworker or builder or mechanic
GRIT will wear ANY glass given enough rubbing. GG is not indestructible. it just "tougher" than usual and nothing can hold up to grit forever nothing.
ie USE a sacrificial screen protector if you tend to expose your phone to grit.

Easily? perhaps depend on how you define the word "Easily"

The Samsung Galaxy note HAS GORILLA GLASS

This has been confirmed by dozens of XDA members who have gone above and beyond to confirm that it is indeed Gorilla Glass in the Note.
Ever since the release date, the feud over Gorilla Glass began and it ended a week later. Dozens of members contacted Corning and they said that many devices with gorilla glass are not shown in their list.
®That was for all you going "CORNING SAYZ DA NOTE HAZ NO GORILLA GLAZS"
I have read numerous threads where users have contacted Samsung and have reached the conclusion that it is indeed gorilla glass in our notes. On pretty much all the tech sites, they all list the Note as having Gorilla Glass.
Gorilla glass is Scratch-"resistant" not Scratch "proof" and even if it was Scratch proof, it would not be impervious to everything.
Gorilla Glass isn't magic, it is Glass and like any other Glass, sand can scratch it because Glass is just super heated sand.
Now, to those saying "GORILLA GLAZS IS DESIGNED TO B3 scrATCH PROOF"
Gorilla glass was created in the hopes of reducing shock from falls, to preserve the glass, while also giving adequate scratch resistance.
Hopefully, this will encourage people to spend the $20 on a decent screen protector to protect the $260 screen+ digitizer on their Note.

do you even know what gorilla glass is? even if the glass is made exactly the same way with exactly the same composition as gorilla glass, it's not gorilla glass unless corning says it is! do you have any proof that the galaxy note has gorilla glass? NO! geezz don't waste our time starting a new thread with absolutely no evidence

Isn't this a good thing since lotus glass has much tighter property and better display features than gorilla?

Right! let me enlighten you a little, gorilla glass was never designed to reduce shock from fall, hence if u drop you phone sideways it will crack
gorilla glass isn't made just from sand like other glass, it has aluminium oxide in it (you know.. the stuff sapphires and rubies are made of)
pfft!

I know it is not magic when seeing the scratchS on my GNote.
Please stop it with the Gorillas will ya. All this Gorilla talk is making me loopy.
Jesus, therz some stubbornly persistent ppl.
Corning had a patent for making GORILLA GLASS. It doesn't anymore. Once the patent expires, big companies usually start manufacturing their own version of the ex-patented product. it's cheaper and most of the times better, cuz it fits their exact needs. Moreover, sammy and corning play together for quite a while now.
So, NO, the Note doesn't have GORILLA glass but it does have a glass that is the same or better.
chrz and let's hope for no more threads on that sbj. starts to feel like a teen-problem forum here
Maybe the mods can create a new sub-forum dedicated to debating the glass used in the Note. That way we can talk about glass all day long without the clutter of less important topics related to using the phone.

(Uh, do you think i'm being premature?)
I got proof!
I asked Samsung myself and they replyed with the answere: Yes, the galaxy note do have Corning´s gorilla glas. We´re sorry for not making this clear.
So there you have it!
Damn! I just dropped my Note on the street while walking.
5 foot drop. Scratches on the corners. Part of the plastic rim around one of the edges of the glass jumped away. Glass fortunately still fully intact. No scratches.
Phone operating as before.
Really bummed, but could've been much much worse.

I dropped it on the concrete floor 5 times now, once from a height of 1,5 m - no damage what so ever. Thank-you Samsung for choosing Gorilla Glass.
I dropped mine ~4ft onto concrete when getting out of my truck and it's practically undamaged. The plastic edge around the screen is scuffed on two corners (which I'll buff out at some point) but the screen is spotless, despite having landed face down. I've enjoyed over 2 months now of a slim, sexy, clear, case-free and screen protector-free phone.

After all the stories of scratched screens, I went ahead and got an SGP oleophobic screen protector for mine. While scratch protection may not be completely necessary, I will say that smudges are significantly reduced relative to my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with no SP. I'm actually sold on them after using this one.

i'm almost sure the 7.7 features gorilla, simply because the corning site always took it's time to update on new products. and i can't imagine that samsung wont use this feature on it's otherwise VERY sophisticated and well built 7.7...
example:
it took corning MONTHS to state they use gorilla on the galaxy note,
and in the note forums had been quite similar discussions than this one!

Well, Gorilla Glass isn't nuke proof or anything. It's going to break, scratch, and shatter like any other glass. It just has a higher threshold. I think sometimes people think that since their device has Gorilla Glass then they can be a bit more carefree with it, and then are disappointed that *whoops*, smash!

Heck, with as many separate manufacturing facilities (I think the 7.7 is made in at least two countries) and overlapping product lines as Samsung has, they might not even be sure themselves which device has Gorilla Glass
I think it has gorilla glass, because of it's blueish reflection...
just like on the GSII.

The padlock's corner hits the screen near the earpiece, I'm using a screen guard and the impact bores through it! I immediately checked for damage, thank God theres none!

I had my hands full with shopping and a screaming baby a month or two ago. I put the tab down on the boot ledge of my car and once I'd finished putting away the shopping, forgetting where I'd put my tab, I closed the lid. It didn't close but I remembered tab, in a moment of horror, a split second before I gave it a slam.
The glass edge had been popped out a couple of mil and amazingly there was no damage. All was fine after pressing it back in.
I don't know if it was the glass or hard plastic of the anymode cover but regardless, the glass itself must be pretty tough.

Dunno what it is... but it's STRONG
My friend's dog attacked it , dropped it about 1m (3ft) onto concrete glass-down...and there was no damage to the screen or the internals (edges of the side/back plastic had slightly scuffed paint though).
I've dropped it on tile floors from about the same height or higher (I'm 189cm/6'2" and somewhat nearsighted) while standing up... still works.
I've dropped an E-cig (heavy bugger, and made of metal to boot) directly onto the screen, many times... not a scratch.
Whatever glass it is, it's even more durable than Sammy's Galaxy S1 (aka AT&T Samsung Captivate's) screen, which does show a grand total of 1 tiny scratch (only visible on black, several pixels long). Still no scratches despite my clumsy and at-times drunken lifestyle :good:

FFS, Gorilla Glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof!
It really is a simple equation - if your screen comes into contact with an object that is harder than the surface of the glass, it will likely end up scratched (depending on the force and the direction it is applied in of course).
Gorilla Glass is not a panacea and should not be treated as such. However, it will protect your screen from scratches far better than it would if not equipped with Gorilla Glass.
Regards,
Dave

Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using XDA Premium HD app
It does. The person at Samsung who said it didn't probably doesn't even know what gorilla glass is.
It has GG2, GG is more scratch resistant than normal glass of the same thickness but will still sratch - it is not scratch proof.
The fact that you have a scratch does not mean it isn't GG...
Gorilla glass's biggest problem is advertising...everyone thinks it makes the glass invincible for no reason. It's just stronger, and regularly glass is pretty weak, so...nowhere near invincible.
On a sidenote, how are screen protectors faring with S-pen and such? I saw a warning against using them, but will probably want one myself.

Where did Samsung say this? Every review site says it does have Gorilla Glass because those are the specs that Samsung provided to the reviewers.
It's time to put this to rest once and for all.
If you Google "Galaxy Note 2 Gorilla Glass", every site that did early reviews states that the Note 2 has Gorilla Glass. Why? Because those are the specs they got from Samsung, not just made up or speculated out of thin-air.
Secondly, THIS VIDEO that was posted on the previous page proves that the screen has Gorilla Glass. There's no possible way that you'd be able to press that hard on your screen with scissors or keys and have no scratches if Gorilla Glass was not present.
Thirdly, you're scratching a stylus on the screen all day for some people. The Note 2 will most definitely have Gorilla Glass for that reason alone, just like the Note 1 did, and almost every other modern Samsung (and touch-screen) device.
Finally, Wikipedia has a list of all devices that are known to have Gorilla Glass and the Note 2 is listed:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_devices_with_Gorilla_Glass
So, let's stop this madness and disseminating misinformation until it's officially posted on a Samsung webpage that the Note 2 does not have Gorilla Glass. Every indication proves that it does.
mine has Dinosaur Glass
There are other manufactures that make similar glass too. It's not rocket science and the idea has been around and used since the 60's. They are just replacing sodium ions with larger potassium ions, the larger ions put the glass under tension making it harder. Kind of like pretensioned concrete. It will still scratch, sand with a little pressure will scratch it easily.
Every new samsung high end phone have gorilla glass1 or 2. At samsung service works a lot of silly people. One time I asked does s3 has micro sim or normal sim card slot and he said me- normal.....
When i called up to speak to someone at HTC about a few problems with the phone i use the now, i was in contact with 3 HTC employees and not one of them knew anything about the phone HTC sensation i had to get put through to the technical department before i finally spoken to someone that knew about the phone..
The email that you say you got from Samsung was probably written by someone who works for them and has no idea about the Note 2, as everyone has said the phone does come with GG2.
Christ my HTC Sensation and the girlfriend has the HTC One X both have GG and she still managed to put scratches on both phones. as people have said its scratch resistant not proof. My cousin has managed to put loads of scratches on her S3 and that has GG2, so it can be easily done. even thought the GG is supposed to make it harder but as anyone will tell you.... every phone they have had they have always managed to put scratches on the screen in some way.

The End of Screen Protectors?

Corning will show off Gorilla Glass 3 at CES
Three times as tough
By Carly Page
Fri Jan 04 2013, 10:06
The Inquirer (http://s.tt/1xXuk)
GLASS BLOWER Corning has revealed that it will showcase its next generation Gorilla Glass 3 at CES in Las Vegas next week, which it claims is three times as tough as its previous version.
On its website, Corning took away the air of surprise from CES, telling the world that Gorilla Glass 3 will make its debut at the show next week. It told us what we can expect from the upgraded screen protection material, saying that it will be three times more durable than its Gorilla Glass 2 technology.
With three times more toughness, the glass supposedly will show 40 percent fewer visible scratches than before and come with 50 percent more shock resistant strength - good for those who are constantly dropping their devices.
That's not all Corning has got up its sleeve for this year's CES, as the firm will also be showing off its optical fibre technology.
Wendell Weeks, the chairman, CEO and president of Corning said, "This year at CES, Corning will demonstrate its industry leadership in specialty glass and fiber optic technologies with the introduction of two products designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of consumers' favorite devices."
"These new innovations build on the increasingly important and continually evolving role of highly engineered glass technologies in delivering improved product performance and functionality through touch capabilities, protective cover glass, and device connectivity."
Corning is promising to reveal all on 7 January. We'll be at CES in Las Vegas next week.

It's funny you mention this because my Note 2 has literally just dropped off a tom drum several times in row now and not a scratch. You win some, you lose some. That's with every phone by every manufacturer. Drop tests are pointless.
Its a bad state of affairs that we all spend a disproportionate amount of our time worrying about our devices glass screen.
Samsung have commited themselves to the race toward flexy OLED screens & it means (luckily for us) the current glass screens days are numbered.

What the hell is flexible oled gonna do? Samsung claims it will be virtually break proof and all signs are pointing towards going back to plastic. Unless they have some revolutionary mind blowing plastic, oops can't say that apple would be pissed, unless they have some.. **** it... revolutionary scratch proof plastic will the tradeoff be worth it? I am kind of mixed on the issue, but in the end if it still very tough and allows edge to edge screen protectors I am all for it. And I hope they don't have a bezeless phone like many people want. Usability nightmare waiting to happen. In case nobody has noticed, notice how big the bezels are on tablets still? Wonder why?

My heart has skipped a beat but not a scratch, nothing broken, just a hardly visible dent next to the headphones jack. It that was an iphone I am sure it would have been shattered by the imact.
Now somebody tell me about flimsy plastic and how cheap the Note II feels

and then going to be Gorilla Glass 4 then 5 then 6 then 7 and so on lol same crap
I feel even GG2 is plenty strong. 3 is really gonna rock. Here's a youtube video.
How tough is Corning® Gorilla® Glass 2? Corning puts it to the test.
I dropped my phone second day i got it.. it fell out of jacket pocket ( 1.3 + meters ) straight to wooden floor, and there was no dmg on the screen.. Just 2 minor scratches on bazel, nothing else.. Guess i was lucky...

The glass is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, as mentioned a hundred times.
That said, I believe that gorilla glass is more resistant to hairline fractures and cracks going across the glass. Whenever I see a non gorilla glass crack, it's usually across one side of the screen. I've had three gorilla glass phones, I've abused and droppes them countless of times, but never scratched more than a centimeter at most. I do believe other glasses would have caused larger cracks...
All anecdotal of course, but to me it seems this way.

Wonder why?

I'm very confident that a plastic material as in a flexible screen will be just as scratch proof as my current note screen, after all i use a screen protector & like many people, i have never had to replace a screen protector due to scratching either.
Samsungs design problems with flexible screens aren't to do with concerns of interface durability, more so to do with keeping moisture out as a laminated Organic screen is destroyed if there is moisture ingress.
Jeezo how many times do people have to told gorilla glass doesn't make the glass drop proof, it means it's scratch resistant.

People also need to remember that a lot of phones these days have that oil-resistance coating or whatever it is to help reduce finger prints and make your finger slide across it nicely. So a lot of times the scratches people are seeing are scratches in that coating vs. the actual glass.
Also the person who mentioned about what's Corning going to do when Samsung brings out these breakable screens? Corning supplies products for all different kinds of uses. One example is in schools, where much of the glass for Science classes ie: test tubes, beakers, etc are all produced by corning.

That's what I've been saying but its kinda like bullet proof vests. Sure it'll stop a couple but technically they're not bullet "proof" either.
Gorilla glass 10 wouldn't be a match for the inside of my wife's purse. The second day she had her Galaxy Nexus (with a case and screen protector), she managed to damage both. Luckily the phone is fine, but I'd rather replace screen protectors and $2 eBay cases than an entire phone or screen.

What is the verdict or opinion on dragon tail glass? I am sure other competitors have some comparable glass, just corning has a name and reputation.

Not only is a woman's purse a black hole where everything vanishes into oblivion, it's also a death trap for anything that can be dented or scratched!

gorilla glass my butt!

I dropped my Note2 on asphalt today and even though it had a anti scratch prorection on, the front glass broke! This sux. I thouught it would tolerate more beating then a single fall.
Now I have to pay 150$+ to fix ir!
Gorilla Glass isn't drop proof. It still breaks man

gorilla glass isn't shatterproof. It's resistant to perpendicular impacts, but hit it along the edge and it cracks like an eggshell.
What the f is scratch prorection?

Next time use a case
Yeah the glass does break but even the 'gorilla glass is scratchproof' argument is bull****, put your phone within one mile of a grain of sand and the screen will scratch very easily!

It's gorila glass not bulletproof glass.
I must confirm - gorilla glass on note 2 sucks
So,
I must confirmed that Gorilla glass on my Note 2, have scratches.
what is sad here ? I WATCH FOR MY PHONE VERY CAREFULLY.
nOT even once ( or maybe once or twice ) it was in my pocket with other stuffs like coins or keys. ž
I took out my folie, because I've burned it with cigarete, and I did't like it. So my phone was about three, or four weeks without screenprotector.
YET, I found little scratches on it.
CONFUSED .
I watched some movies on you tube, with Note 2, and S3, the guy was simultainesly hit screens of two devices WITH VERY BIG KNIFE.
Non scratches was found.
I cary the phone for three weeks, 2,3 hours per day, in emty pocket and YET GET SCRATCHES !!!
if this is gorilla glass, I'm a monkey
Dirt and sand in your pocket can scratch the glass. The glass is scratch resistant NOT scratch proof. Any glass will scratch under certain situations

IS THAT SO ?
It's not scratches from sand for sure. ...
THE MAIN POINT IS....GORILLA GLASS DOESN'T DO THE JOB.
or it does in some cheap way.... Let's be honest
People forgot the word "glass" in gorilla glass.
Glass break, gorilla glass makes it harder to break, but still breaks.

I don't have a single scratch on my Note 2 after using it for 6 months. So I don't what you're talking about.
scratch resistant doesn't mean drop-on-the-floor-proof

if you the lcd and digitiser still function you can replace the top glass for just ~$20. You dont have to replace the entire assembly. Check this video out to know what i am talking about.

hope this helps
Let's see, even if english is not my mother tongue, I know the difference between SCRATCH and HIT.
As they told you, gorilla glass is SCRATCH resistant, so if it falls it has nothing to do, the difference is that is harder (not impossible) to get scratches with the normal use than other screens without it, and I can ASSURE you that it does its work.
I have some thin scratches at my screen after using the phone carefully for two months. Very disappointed.

Personally I think this Gorilla glass ( on this phone I can judge only ) have weeker products and better products on Note 2.
Someone have hardener, and someone softener glass on his phone. I think this various from phone unit to phone unit.
When I saw this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFdJOBOI3lY
I was thinking there is no way to scratch it with carefull use. And after just three weeks of very, very carefully use, BUM...scratches...

One of my friends thought like you. I took his note 2 and show him the scratches. He has a lot of little one.
To see it you have to look at a white screen, little "rainbows" appear.
Not a big deal but still scratches.
