Delete windows.old folder - Windows 8 General

Does anyone know how to delete the windows.old folder as it's not needed but I've only managed to delete the user folder from within it?

You need to take ownership of the folder and replace ownership of all subfolders and files. You then need to change permissions to give yourself full control and again replace ownership of subfolders. The reason its not deleting is because the files and folders will be protected with security rights. Its a real pain and you may need to do it by command line if right click does not work.

How do you do it via command line?

or a somewhat quicker way to do it is to use the cleanup tool, select sytem files, let it do its scan and it will let you delete all manor of crap windows uses
go to metro and search settings for "disk clean" click on free disk space
let it scan your windows drive, it shouldnt take too long, it will give you a list of normal crap you can delete, then click on the "clean up system files" button, let it scan your windows drive again, tick all the old guff you don't want including windows.old stuff and bobs your uncle
it might take a while as there is usually several gig, in my case it was over 200GB of data so give it a chance.

I don't think it was listed as windows.old. I think it was previous version of windows or something like that, its now vanished off my system so I assume that when its cleaned it goes away. Did you try deleting any of it manually as the first post said? if so perhaps that deletes some setup files needed for clean up tool to know its an old version of windows
just to be sure though, you did click on the "clean up system files" button once you initially ran the clean up tool? the first part of the clean up tool BEFORE you click that button only shows you user related rubbish, recycle bin etc
the other way of doing it as the first post said is to gain control of it, that is a pain to be honest and shouldn't need to be done
right click on the .old folder
properties
Security
advanced
change owner (this may appear different depending on which version of windows you use but what you want to do is change the owner, then find your user name and select it, and then apply those settings, if it says "select user / groups" and gives you an empty box, click advanced again, then click find, select your username)
Once you have done that you can the go back in to properties for that folder, go to security, and change permissions, by pushing the "edit" button, select your users and give full control to everyone
the taking ownership is the hard bit, once done your pretty much sorted

Anyone have Polaris Office working?

I have the tablet version .apk installed that was posted in the collection of Transformer apps, I think in the Xoom forum. Anyways, it opens fine before it force closes, but when I try to open my resume it crashes. I tried installing it outright and also putting in system/app. Both ways give the same results, it opens then crashes when opening a file. I cleared the data, reset the device, nothing.

Did you check the apk details to see if there's some sort of license/drm check?
Many apps and games are now coming with a license check, just like computer software to make certain people aren't pirating them. Something could be checking for a serial number.
I don't know if that's a paid version too. If so, I'm pretty sure discussing pirated apps is against ToS. If it's a freely available thing then, no worries. I'm waiting, maybe forever for a LibreOffice port to Android. Probably be a long while, dunno how well Dalvik and something that big would play together.

That's true, it may be a paid app. If so I'm not trying to do anything that's frowned upon here. I do know that the app isn't available in the market yet. I think I'm gonna put this off for a while and see what happens with the official release because it's obviously not working right now.
From what little I can learn Polaris Office comes preiinstalled on the Transformer tablet only. I found advice that I needed to move two lib files over to system/lib to make it work. Well I only found one lib file, copied to system/lib and still crashes. I can get it display some stuff but it won't let me start a new doc or read an exist in doc. There are some nice YouTube videos showing how it works, and it looks real nice. I hope some can figure it out.
Look at this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1114100
The two files are libpolarisoffice_Clipboard.so and libpolarisoffice.so. It works fine for me without any FCs.
Yep, It Works For Me Too..
but you have to push the two lib files to system/lib using ADB (or Root Explorer)
Thanks for the names of the two file...it works! I am amazed at how this info is found and shared

Perfect, thank you. I knew there had to be a way.
However (you just knew there was going to be a however!), Polaris Office loads OK, but many of the functions don't work. For example I am able to type in text for a new document but very few of the tools at the top work and I can't highlight any portions of the text. There must still be something missing to make it work correctly. When I do a check for updates within the program it says I am up to date. Any one else seeing these problems?

Seems to be OK for me, I've had it running for nearly 2 weeks now. What functions specifically aren't working for you? I'll try them on mine...
I found a couple of YouTube videos by andyxover that I was able to try out. I could do all of his examples.
The problems/limitations that jumped out at me were
(1) you can not move pictures around in a document (MS Word limits you also)
(2) in spreadsheets you have to type in the blind when you are making enties into boxes
I need to ply around more to get a better feel for this UI.

1. Yes you can. Single tap on the image and it will select.. Then you can move it where you want within reason.
2. There is no "in cell" editing. Editing is in the text box at the top of the screen.

Hello, I was readig your posts looking for help and maybe you can help me, as I can see you solved the problem.
I have an Acer Iconia A500 w/Honeycomb and tryed to install Polaris Office.
I donwloaded the P.O. files and read the txt file: (Using root explorer or adb, push the two lib files to system/lib.).
Downloaded and install rootexplorer, copy to pen drive "lib files", opened rootexplorer, copied lib files then went to System File, opened lib file, did hit paste and a warning message says this file is reading only.
I began to investigate and found that needed to root the device, I did it and tested with root checker, it said it was rooted succesfully, and then repited the hole process, again, read only file.
I was reading posts and found that what I think is the problem, "Fix permissions", so it let me paste the 2 lib files. But still havent found the answer to this. Is there a step I missed? or I'm just doing it all wrong?
I thought if I could find the way to solve the "fix permissions" problem and could paste the 2 lib files in System/lib folder it would be the solution, but can´t paste the 2 files. What should I do?
Thanks in advance for reading and helping me.
It's kind of funny.
You've missed an option in Rootexplorer. It has a button on the top corner that says "Mount R/W" press it and copy the files. You have an old version of rootexplorer if it doesn't have that option.
Ok, here goes:
OPEN Rootexplorer,
top right is the Remount as R/W button, click on it and it changes to Remount R/O
found MNT folder and click, foun usb_storage folder and click,
found the folder I made with 2 lib files and click,
Multiselect and mark: libpolarisoffice.so and libpolarisoffice_Clipboard.so files and Copy
Back to System folder and then to lib folder, click PASTE and " You cannot paste here because the file system is read-only.
What happen??? What am I doing wrong?

Opened the system file folder, found the lib file folder, opened and tried to paste:
the same answer "You cannot paste here because the system file is read-only"
But I noticed something, when I click R/W it changes to R/O, when I open system folder to Paste the Remount automaticaly changes to R/W again after it was R/O, I don´t know if it something important to this case, afted denied access I cilk the remount button again, just to see if it changes to R/O, but it doesn´t.
I usually just copy the files and then press the r/w button and paste. I don't leave the folders. You shouldn't have problems if you're rooted.

Just double check with rootchecker and it says I have root access.
I don't know! Maybe is not for me this time.

Unknown folder in the root of internal memory?!

Hey guys.
I'm a bit intrigued. There's an unknown folder in the root of my phone's internal memory. I delete it every few weeks when I check the storage and sweep all the junk I might find in there.
Here's the folder structure.
GT-I9505\Internal storage\.sp\.94\.743\.cache\LazyList.
Inside that last folder (LazyList), there's a 23 KB file named 663014360. It has no extension. Opening it with Notepad / WordPad reveals a lot of unreadable characters (of course...).
I am having a hard time tracing it back to any app (if it's an app that's creating it, or the ROM itsellf ).
Does anyone here know what this .sp sh*t is all about...?
For what it's worth, I am running the latest SlimKat ROM.

It is very good that although you are deleting the launcher's (or some other app) cache, it restores it.
I can understand that you're mad about it and you would like that your launcher (or app) shall not create any cache and consequently would work slower.
As well I appreciate your huge work with tracing it (5th link in google search provides the answer what is it).
If you really care what is, your work would be pretty simple. Factory reset your phone, start each built in ROM app and check the folder after. Then, install your apps one by one, starting each of it and each time after closure checking the folder. Easy.

What exactly did you use as a search term on Google?
I know most apps create folders that are legible (com.android.thisgameproducer). Buth with this given specific folder's structure, I don't know what it could be.
For what it's worth, I have been trying to find an answer to this for some months. But only now I made a topic about it. I did my research, which turned out nothing... :/

Have you:
wiped your phone, and then used titanium backup for freezing each app, restoring it, and verifying which one creates it? did you repeated the same for each installed by you app? Well, if this folder/file is NOT created by one application (or installed, or embedded into the ROM), then only one explanation is that your phone is used by E.T at night while he "phone home" and this is his encrypted message.:cyclops:
about extension/filetype:does the file have header?

You know where that .sp folder comes from? Perhaps you were able to find something on Google that I didn't all this time...
I don't know what that header is / should be...
I know I could wipe all and start over again and check each app... But that's too time consuming... Hence I am asking here.

1. No idea which particular app makes the cache file, but it is clear that it is cach for one app you have installed, or one you have embedded in ROM.
2. Header is the two first bytes of file in the notepad viewer: for example, PK is characteristic for zip files and by changing the extension you could see what's inside.
3. No one who does not have your ROM AND your specific set of apps installed would be able to provide the answer, therefore without doing your homework, it is unlikely that you'd have information you want.

Well, I don't really know what homework I should do here, as the folder structure is weird (come on, just numbers? ) and the file has no obvious meaning whatsoever. I'm usually a tech guy, but when all I see is numbers, I'm really not that wise... :silly:
Since I know for a fact that I don't have any rogue apps installed, guess I should leave it be and carry on.
But anyway, just for the heck of it, I opened the file in Notepad. Here's the first line (as seen in Notepad, lol).
Code:

WP8/8.1 HERE Maps method working with instructions from @slavanap
WP8.1 instructions (SD card needed)
1.Do device registration to allow sideloading of apps
2. Install HERE Maps (microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/here-maps/9wzdncrfhw6b) from the store, and move it to sd card. Download installation file manually ( wpsnitch.appspot.com ), if you want to install it from SD card.
3.Install Windows Explorer, keep it on phone
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/stor...r/9wzdncrdrl4w
4.Sideload WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker_Release_ARM.xap(thanks @djamol and @contable),keep it on phone
5.Extract Install.zip from below , and put the extracted "Install" folder on the root of your sd card. The Install folder should have 4 files in it.
6.Open WPSystem Folder Unlocker app. Hit Unlock WPSystem Folder(sd card) button. It should say Success. Now close it
7.Open Windows Explorer.
8.Hit the app bar, go to "access folders",hit the +, choose sd card, then click the check mark
9.Navigate to D:\WPSystem folder. Rename the Apps folder to Apps1. Now open Apps1 folder
10. Navigate to {EFA4B4A7... or {6C28635B-... (I got the second GUID after reinstall)
11. Delete all directories here except Install . Then navigate to Install folder. Delete following 3 files from there: AppManifest.xaml NokiaRegistryUtils.dll NokiaRegistryUtils.winmd
12.Navigate to D:\WPSystem folder and rename Apps1 back to Apps
13. Navigate to the root of your sd card. Get into "Install" folder we put here earlier. Choose all 4 files from there to Copy.
14.Navigate to D:\WPSystem\Apps\{EFA4B4A7-74...}\Install folder. Hit the app bar then paste.
15. Go to your apps list and run HERE Maps. vcREG should open. Apply unlock.
16. After you apply the unlock, you can sideload vcREG_1_2_SIDELOAD.xap to have the app available in your applist for future use.
Q&A
HOW TO USE THE APP TO CAP UNLOCK
now that the app is open, you want to unlock all capabilities. hit the app bar, and tap "templates". here we see two options, interop/caps unlock, and full fs access through MTP. check your options, and click apply. Reboot for MTP.
HOW TO USE THE REGISTRY EDITOR
the main registry editor is pretty straightforward. put the correct path, the key name and value if its a write.
string: it will read as one string. writing is the same, write a string, no spaces, hit write
multistring: multiple strings are read as strings separated by spaces. to write multiple strings, separate each string by a space, hit write.
dword: it will read as 8 characters of ascii. so a value of 1 will read as 00000001. writing is the same. you MUST write 8 characters or it wont write it,so a 1 is 00000001 and B0000 is 000B0000. all bytes are hex, not decimal.
binary: when you read, the app will return 20 bytes, regardless of how long the binary is. if the whole binary sequence is 11 22 33, it will read as 112233 and then 17 00s. the reason for this is that there isnt a method to know how long the binary sequence is,so i hardcoded it to read 20. even if its longer than 20 bytes, you will only get 20 bytes back. i can up the limit at a later time if its something people need.
writing binary is also limited to a max of 20 bytes. if you are writing less than 20 bytes though, dont put the extra zeroes. if you are writing 4 bytes such as 11 22 33 44, then simply write it like this 11223344(no spaces) then hit write.
DO THESE REGISTRY CHANGES PERSIST AFTER A HARD/FACTORY RESET?
no. if you hard reset, you will revert back to the stock rom and any changes you made to the registry will be lost. you will have to make the changes again after a hard reset. file system changes, especially in the windows folder can persist though.

Work with me very fine.

@vcfan
So this is similart to what root access on android phone? What is the main advantage if we do this, what do we gain? For me on android the bes thing was customization of the look, and the possibility to block ads in free applications . The ads in windows phone aplications are really annoying when the pop up through whole screen, it would be great if there was a way to block them with host file or something, like in android.
I wonder if we can add an extra quick action. I tried editing the "AllowedQuickSettingsElements" registry but it reverts back to 4 as soon as I pull down the action bar.

No it doesn't work with wp10 tp . You should get unlocked before going for 10 tp.

As I know I wasn't able to change names or access wpsystem folder with file managers other than official one . How did you do that?
Has anyone tried to replace black background under All apps (the list of all apps) with some custom wallpaper?
Can anyone with a Lumia 830 confirm this is working?

What I did was,
I had Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 installed with developer unlock
I unlocked the phone with Interop Unlock but did not hard reset
Then i updated WP 8.1 to Win 10 TP and then i hard reset
it seems the unlock worked.
I can deploy ,
App data manager which WORKS
CustomWPsystem which works but cannot patch because Win10 TP doesnt allow permissions to WPSystem folder
I deployed vcREG: Lumia Reg Editor too
but since i hard reset developer unlock should be removed, so im guessing its interop unlock
The only issue is i cannt deploy io explorer, wphtweaks and accept colors app
Is this only bcuz of power tools ? IDK because i have VS 2013 on home PC and it still gives manifest file error.

its not an unlock issue, your not able to patch the app, that is an sd card issue
I think u can do it manually or format SD card and try again
thanks for the app but I can't write any reg key? i wonder if it did not send me the confirmation notification or it just can't?

delete

odd, once I did downgrade once I never had to download the package again as it is stored locally until I delete it. The recovery tool picks up the stored rom and flashes it without downloading.
Here All Guy's are clever, so they uses their own mind and their own step's.
and the steps they uses that is more simple than you described here.
Why you don't go to settings menu in Recovery Tool ?
Why you don't define your "Custom Package" Folder.
Even you don't have copy any large content into any directory.
Like,
C:\ProgramData\ Etc Etc It's very complicated to backup your Image Files.
Mean, Assume I've more than 10 device and i want to place my ROM files on different Drive for backup purpose.
I.e "D:\ROMS\RM-xyz
Cheers..

I tried to install via WDRT.. set the location for custom package also. But it won't show the package available on disk. It only says package available on server.
What should i do ?
will it install directly by what is on Rm-xxx folder ?
or I have to do anything else please tell me.

you need to use Nokia Care Suite 5 and higher to accomplish flashing.
edit: ok, ignore this. just see the next post for a good tutorial.
Hi @derausgewanderte,
Nokia Care Suite has become obsolete. Use rather Thor2.
Best regards,

Removing cache from Android files

Hi
I removed an app from my phone
I connected my phone to my computer and checked if there are any left over files, and yes there are
I am trying to remove the app folder in Phone->Android->Data
It gives me this error: "cache_blablabla cannot be removed: the storage location is write protected. Remove the protection and try again"
Could I somehow get administrator permission so I can remove it?

Any time you add or remove apps(especially apps in the system partition), you can boot the device into stock recovery mode and select the "wipe cache partition" option, then reboot. This is necessary because left over cached data from apps that are no longer there can cause conflicts with your device functioning properly.
When the device reboots, it will rebuild the cache as it needs and everything will work like it is supposed to.
This will wipe all cached data on your device, this does not remove your personal files or anything else important, it is not the same as factory reset, it only wipes the "live" data that the app has stored/loaded in the background while the device is on. Similar to clearing your RAM space on PC, it doesn't wipe the user data or any other data from your harddrive, it just dumps what is in your RAM.
One other thing, the Android/data folder is a necessary folder, that is where it stores app data for ALL of the apps that you installed. If you look inside that folder, you will see other folders, each of these other folders is a folder for each individual app that the phone is storing data for.
What you are actually probably looking for is how to remove that data that was associated to the app that you removed. That can be deleted using your phones file manager. Just open your file manager on your android device, select your internal storage. There you will see the Android folder, open it, then you will see all the folders for the individual apps. Find the folder there that is associated to the app that you removed. When you find it you can delete it from within your file manager app.
You don't need a PC, ADB or any other apps or fancy special tricks to delete folders that are stored within the Android/data folder.

Wow, thank you a lot!
Can I do that without rooting my phone?
And I am doing it because there's an app that gives away something free, you can use it max. 5 times and then you have to purchase. So I thought it'd be a good idea to remove everything associated to that app what might makes it possible to give me the free stuff again, haha
Do you know if it's even possible by removing those files? And if it isn't, do you maybe know where I should be looking at?

It is pointless for you to even try, the information that keeps track of how many times you've done it is probably stored online somewhere in some server for the developers/owners of the app.
