Do all/most of the custom roms have the dialer enabled? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to use the built-in dialer for sip, which is inaccessible in stock. part of the reason I want this is I want to use bluetooth and still haven't found a voip/sip app that supports bluetooth. Others say grooveip works fine, but I'm Canadian so no use.
Or is there an easy method of enabling in stock now? I read before of some method where you had to change the dpi and do some other things and then add your sip credentials and then modify the dpi back.
But I'm curious to know if most custom roms have it enabled.

I'd also be interested getting the stock dialer for sip. Preferably in Stock rom.

do you mean the phone.apk ?

Thanks, but the thing is phone.apk is already there, part of the Android system, it's just disabled somehow. And not the typical way that can be unfrozen.

This post describes the method of enabling the sip dialer. A little clunky but doesn't sound too hard, haven't tried it yet though. He mentions bluetooth is a little shaky which is disappointing. Does bluetooth just suck in general with android or what?
But anyone who is running a custom rom, can you tell me if the dialer is enabled, if so, what are you running?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29254745&postcount=12

4.2 has really irked me and I'm looking again at installing a custom rom, probably cyanogen as that's what I ran on my old nook color.
So can someone running cyanogen or any custom rom tell me if the dialer is enabled?

I've ran lots of custom roms and haven't seen a dialer once. We've never had 3G.

Can you not download Go Contacts. This comes with a dialer. I've used this successfully to make and receive phone calls on the Nexus 7 in conjunction with tablet talk and a Bluetooth headphone.

Thank you for answering! Now at least I know custom roms don't have it, but it's disappointing. You mention we don't have 3g I know that, and that's probably the logic why google disables it. But carriers also disable things like that to prevent voip usage, so it's kind of irrating, and surprising that custom roms wouldn't enable it either. Especially since I know it was there on cm7 on my nook which didn't even have a mic. I put in my sip creditentials in cm7 just to test a call and it worked fine, but again obviously it had no mic. I thought oh well, next tablet. Well now I have the next tablet and I was somewhat hoping google wouldn't do what the carriers typically do. I think it also avoids confusion because people think it's a phone as well, but why not at least have a developer option to enable sip dialing or something.
I may request on the cyanogen mod forrums if they could please enable it.

[Q] How to remove the phone bits from my tab?

As I have been flashing ROMs I've noticed many come with the Phone.apk. My Tab is a tablet, and not a phone so I want to remove it all. But when I tried to through adb it renders my data service useless. So would someone please tell me exactly how this is done?
Strange that you want to delete it
You could take a custom launcher and hide it from the drawer.

I don't see how.. I have a phone to make calls from. I have a tablet for web browsing.
I'm not wanting to hide it though. I want to remove it.
As far as I know the only way to fully remove the dialer functionality would be to cook your own rom without it. The only other thing I can think of is maybe taking the phone.apk from a standard tmo build and using that (I am fairly sure the default build still has a phone.apk as to my knowledge it is needed for radio services to function). Having said that I use mine as a phone so not gonna mess around to test it myself and my apologies if it doesn't/wont work. As a side note phone.apk is less then 4mb not sure why it would be a huge concern.

My contacts app has the dialer in it. And on some ROMs I get a voicemail notification. I suppose I could find a contacts apk without it. But if I'm going through all that I might as well get rid of the whole thing. I just don't see the reason behind needing to use a tablet as a phone, you know?

The "simple" solution would be to go back to your stock ROM, but that's likely not really an acceptable solution as the performance of the stock ROMs tends to be pretty poor in comparison to the later development builds.
So, you are likely to be left with removing or replacing certain components from your desired ROM with the stock TMo variants (as has been previously mentioned) on a trial and error basis to determine what works and what does not. It's doubtful that you'll find anyone who can tell you *exactly* what you want to do, because it seems that most US Tabs users are looking to re-enable the phone functionality that was artificially crippled by the US carriers.
I seldom use my Tabs phone functionality, but I have used it (makes a great speakerphone for conference calls!), and I would always rather have more functionality than less.

Nexus One and 2.3.4 - Talk doesn't support voice or video

heya,
I've got the new 2.3.4 update for my Nexus One, and it seems that there's absolutely no voice or video support in chat.
Other people on the forum seem to have confirmed this as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061270&page=2
It seems like a pretty lousy move from Google.
On their blog post:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/04/video-chat-on-your-android-phone.html
they specifically mention that Google Talk with video and voice chat will will launch on other devices in the future.
I can understand there not being video on the Nexus One, as there's no front-facing camera (although they could still support it, just with the rear camera...lol), but it seems like a pretty low move to leave the Nexus One in the dust like that with voice as well.
Does anybody know if this is perhaps a bug in the Nexus One update, or perhaps you need to do something to unlock the voice functionality?
Cheers,
Victor
Strange, because with just the normal gtalk app installed on my nexus one (2.3.3 CM7), i'm able to at least voice chat. A pretty lame move if it doesn't allow voice and video.
Seriously, no voice and no video. Google needs to just make a universal gtalk app and put it in the market. Oh well at least there are better alternatives on the market that work now like tango and yahoo messenger.
Has anyone tried manually adding the new talk/jingle lib? I doesn't seem like its included in the update. See here for a link/how to. I would start by copying JUST the lib (second to the last line)
Google just isn't going to bring video chat to phones without a FFC (they said so in the announcement which was pretty clear to me). It offers a pretty bad experience for the average user. Voice chat is certainly possible and there's no reason to not allow it. Hopefully they fix this in a future update and hopefully put chat in the market so they can update it more often.
Just use the app and lib from the Nexus S update. Problem solved.
I agree though that they should at least allow Voice Chat. The only reason I can think of for not doing it would be that it competes with Google Voice but considering that's only available in 2 countries in the world it's hardly what I'd call "widely available".

Yes, the slightly modified Talk2.apk and lib from the thread that we both linked to above works on the N1. There is no reason to only copy the lib as it would be useless without the apk since there is nothing in the old apk actually loading the lib and calling the functions it provides.
I wish I could say I used the Talk app and I cared about this... but I can't.

Cool! Do the 'other' things that didnt work in 2.3.3 work? Like being able to initiate a voice/video call from the pc? Or sending video?
Gapps 20110503 fixes everything. I can send video AND the other user can call me. Awesome!
CM7 nightly #60.
heya,
Hmm, interesting - so you're saying if I just install the gapps 20110503 package, I'll get Gtalk with voice/video support?
Do you mean the one from here?
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
I'm on stock Android, and I'd like to stay that way for now. This package doesn't have any dependencies on CyanogenMod, does it? And it's not going to cause any other weirdness or breakages if I install that package, is it?
I thought that package was just the stock GoogleApps package that's split off as a separate download due to licensing restrictions - what difference is it to the one that's one my Nexus One 2.3.4 now?
Cheers,
Victor
I'm pretty sure you need to be rooted. I'm running CM7 nightly #60.
So that means that the hardware is capable of video chat for sure. we should write to google and ask the nexus team to give it to us, the official way!
It is 100% capable. Confirmed working on my N1.

I'm running a stock, rooted 2.3.4 OTA on my Nexus One and while it works, its only working on WiFi. Anyone else have this problem?
It says I need to be connected to WiFi to initiate a voice/video call. If someone else tries to initiate it, it'll tell me I missed a call because I wasn't on WiFi.
A buddy of mine has the Desire and its working fine on their 3G connection.

Line 2 working on rooted motorola xoom

Hey there. I just wanted to let everyone know that I have Line2 working on my rooted Motorola Xoom. It works on 3G and I am making calls and texting. It requires another Android phone that can download Line2 and App Saver to package the .apk file, but viola, it works!
Props nice find

Looks all but perfect. I'll probably wait around for an official Android 3.x supported release, but it's good to see that something like this works. I'm sure I'll subscribe once that's the case.
Works on my wi-fi zoom too, in case anyone is wondering.
Of course you have to be around a wi-fi hotspot to make/receive calls, but I'm pretty much ALWAYS around a wi-fi hotspot, so it's a viable option for me.
On a side note, this is COOL! Making calls from a xoom!
radiogodd30 is awsome
That line2 apk worked perfectly. I am now using line2 on my xoom. Thank you
Its cool and all, but not something I'd pay monthly for. I wish text free would update their app.
I use Line2 on my Thunderbolt, ipad2 and zoom. Find that it works best on IOS devices.
Charlie
correction on perfectly
My xoom is only working for wifi. the dialing section of the settings tab is not there. I think it is because the app thinks I am a non phone tablet so doesn't need the option. I am guessing on that. I haven't found the configuration files that I hope exist on the xoom to make that change manually.
I know found tjat groove ip is a better solution to make or receive calls using Google voice so no monthly fees just the one time free of 3.99 to buy the app that's ot

Could be, but with line2 I get a ring even when my screen is sleeping and texting built in so it works like the cell phone I am trying to replace.
Anyone happen to know where settings are kept for line2 on the phone? apparently xoom is not at the top of the list of devices they are moving to support so tech support was not really helpful. from the conversations, it sounds like the app thinks my device is wifi only so does not show the dialing (use 3g/4g) section on the settings tab. I am assuming that there is only one app that is hiding that part of the configuration instead of maintaining two versions. IF that is true, there is probably a 'don't use 3g/4g' setting stored on my phone wherever they keep the configuration info.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE RE-UPLOAD THE OLDER LINE2.APK file. I had to reset my Xoom and lost it and the newer one DOES NOT allow you to make calls on the XOOM!

Xoom speaker volume
I've got the 1.0.5 version, but am having speaker issues. It will work fine for a week or two then it will be super quiet. without any specific action that i can identify, it starts working again. Then there is the no phone on my 3g connection. only wi-fi.
Does anyone know what the 1.0.8 version fixed? And does it effect the Xoom.
And of course the obligatory demand for the apk to be posted. Does anyone have it. and Thanks in advance.

[Guide] Newbie to Epic 4G Cyanogen - Common problems solved

Hello,
I am writing this to help other newbies who may want to switch to Cyanogen for the first time on their Epic 4G. There were a few things I needed to do after to get everything working the way I liked and I figure this will save some people time.
What do I need to do prior?
There are many how-to's which will help but I had my Epic stock rom rooted so it was as simple as flashing cyanogen through recovery. Here is the link for a "how-to" root the stock rom if you wish to do it this way. It was the easiest way for me though the official guide says "Rooting the stock firmware is neither recommended nor necessary."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9eaCtiS0Bo
Where do I get Cyanogen?:
You can download it here. I am running the 10.0.0 stable build.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Epicmtd_Info
I have no google apps:
This is a problem with any Cyanogen installation. Easy fix, download & install the gaaps package from the link below and your marketplace will be back.
http://goo.im/gapps
I don’t have Navigation:
Easy fix again, download the google maps app. Here is the app store link.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...DMsImNvbS5nb29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5hcHBzLm1hcHMiXQ..
I don’t have voicemail:
While you can use any voicemail app I wanted the one I had on the stock rom. I linked the app below and your voicemail will be back as soon as you install it. You need to open the app after so that it will activate.
https://od.lk/d/MjRfMjc2MDY5MF8/vtt-sprint.apk
I am getting texts from 9016 every time I get a voicemail:
From reading it seems the stock rom blocks us from seeing these but they are in fact needed for voicemail to work. To fix this I used a free app called “RedList”. Simply add 9016 to the RedList within the app, change the settings to disable both notifications, and this will problem will be solved. Here is the app store link.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5saW5ub3IuUmVkTGlzdCJd
Text messages no longer have separate colors for me and my recipient:
The stock android text display is white and I hated this after getting used to Samsung’s nice colors but luckily you can solve this in two ways.
(One) A theme manager is built into the interface section of your settings page. After searching through almost every free CM10 theme I found this one I liked. It does NOT touch too many things only adding a brushed metal look and displaying text messages how I wanted them. There are a few colors to choose from but I went with Blue.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992980
(Two) Replace only the MMS app with one that is color coded. Please note that unlike the above, to reverse this down the road you will need to find a stock mms app package with an installer. This is good for people who are sure they want this and only wish to change the colors of the messenger, while the above is good for people who like to switch themes often being able to revert back at any second. Link for the colored mms app.
http://www.mediafire.com/?hcjukwwkj4y41h3
Morror: https://od.lk/f/MjRfMjc2MDY5MV8
Facebook pictures no longer sync with my existing contacts:
This is a small problem, but still one that I got used to having with the stock rom and wanted to correct. From reading this seems to be a problem related to later Android versions, not just Cyanogen. The fix for this is easy as well, search out a free app called “UberSync for Facebook”. I had the regular facebook app installed & logged in prior and UberSync logged right in, got the pictures, and updated my contacts.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDEsInJvLndlZWRuZXQuY29udGFjdHNzeW5jIl0.
I no longer have Swype:
Despite having the nice physical keyboard (the whole reason I got the Epic) I still got used to using Swype here or there. I don't think I will be allowed to link this file here but you can find it on "certain" sites.
Notes:
Despite reports that Bluetooth can be problematic, I use it daily with an earpiece and have yet to experience any issues. GPS & 4G also work great. If any links are broken send me a PM! I check my email daily.

Well...
No MD5/SHA1 to compare against to make sure you have a complete download.
People's dropbox tends to get too much traffic and the link becomes dead.
You basically cut out the original author(s) of the file.
Based off # 3: They could need the ad revenue, and/or want to track download activity if they're self-hosting.

#1 - I think more people are concerned with a working link, if they download the archive after and it somehow gets corrupted i'm sure they will just try again
#2 - Valid point though my files don't have a great enough of demand to warrant this. If this changes I will change my links.
#3 The only thing that wasn't mine with a dropbox link was the MMS app and I only mirrored it in case the original link were ever taken down. If it will make you happy I can include the original link as well. For the voice mail app, its simply the sprint one ripped from a stock rom.
Though your points are valid, I think you are sort of just being picky bud
Thanks for the VM download link. Only thing I want is task manager which I had installed on CM9. Is there stockish one that works for 10?

swype
I reinstalled swype 3 or 4 times with various upgrades and it would always "expire" and I'd have to figure out how to get it working again. I am running 10.1 RC5 now and it has a decent generic swype-ish virtual keyboard. The thing missing is that you can't finish your text and go back and fix any misspelled words by touching alternate suggestions. You have to catch them as they come up. It seems like at first I could still do that, but I can't figure out how to get the suggestions to come back up.
I'm over swype.

You need a different Kernel. I have been using didy's kernel for a while. You flash CM10.1 and then you flash the kernel. CM10.1 has its own kernel that overwrites what you flash. So when you update, i think you have to reflash the kernel. I haven't screwed around with it since I installed rc5. I think I did CM, then the kernel, then the big mem patch. I never was able to figure out how to update the radio. I always ended up with "no voice service" or worse.
There is a thread in the developer forum that has the links to the kernel downloads. I am running one from may 30 and haven't updated.

When you say you couldn't update the radio, you just mean the cell service radio, right? Not wifi? I don't have cell service on my Epic, so that wouldn't be a problem for me... just as long as the wifi radio still works
Also, what specifically do you mean by "or worse"?

Yeah. That's the one. I looked at my about phone and it said "didy".
I saw a thread about the nexus radio being hot **** and I fooled around with it. I got either "no voice service" or no nuthin. I was able to flash back to the regular epic radio. there is another thread that had all the flashable zips with different modems. luckily the epic one undid my stupidity - at least on my phone.

Thanks man, I'll give it a shot. CM10.1 is running pretty smoothly on my phone, but it could be better and battery life is not an issue for me.
I'll be sure to run backups before I do though :good:
Thanks
These tips helped - I just made the jump to CM 10.1, and although there are a few quirks it has been great. Your list really helped.
FYI, one thing I ran into was the auto-rotate didn't work. I followed the directions here:
http://epiccm.blogspot.com/2012/01/boot-el30-stock-from-sdcard.html
the first time, there was no change. I tried again (and calibrated like 6 times) and it worked.
Has anyone noticed the physical keyboard doesn't always work the same? In some places, you have to hold down shift or Fn while pressing the key you want (for example - hold shift while pressing A, rather then pressing shift then pressing A). It's not consistent - some inputs work like the keyboard did before. Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this. Not the worst thing (I'm just glad I still have a physical keyboard), but I would prefer it work the way it did before, or if that's not possible, at least be consistent.
And the smiley face button on the physical keyboard doesn't work either. I mean, it's like 2005 where I have to type out my 's!!
any phantom voicemail fix?
phantom voicemails?

Has anyone noticed the physical keyboard doesn't always work the same? In some places, you have to hold down shift or Fn while pressing the key you want (for example - hold shift while pressing A, rather then pressing shift then pressing A). I have noticed that the physical keyboard doesn't work right in the browser. Shift and Fn don't seem to work. I am usually in such a hurry that I just close it up and use the virtual keyboard if I want to have punctuation. It honestly didn't occur to me that it might be fixed. I can't offer that fix. I am just offering emotional support and validation.:good:

I noticed that the default browser you have to hold the shift or fn key while pressing the desired key to get it to work. Apps and os seem to work with a tap od these keys and then a hit of the desired key.I recall a while back a thread about the smiley and since it was not a default key the consensus was that they would not be adding the functionality to cm. While on the topic...same goes with the .com function.

I'm sorry i want to ask, how we modify system setting look in CM? Thank you..

Do any AOSP/Lineage/CM based ROM's support Verizon's WiFi/VoLTE? calling?

Apologies for the long post in advance.
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience or knowledge of using that feature with a custom ROM. I've read online that the option should be available in google dialer. However, I installed the actual Google dialer along side the AOSP dialer or LOS dialer, and didn't see that option anywhere. Granted I'd never had it enable at all since when I bought the device I rooted, installed TWRP, and a custom rom all in the same night.
I''ve just finished restoring my phone using the https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/general/testers-required-easier-root-method-t3561529 method to upgrade to MM with root unlocked bootloader and all, it was really much easier than I thought it would be and had been a long time since I'd had to use Odin/Heimdall (the first night I got the phone), Well You guys know my question, so I'll run now that Phoenix Rom has finished booting finally. Thank goodness..
Or if anyone knows of a good workaround I'm all ears.. I've tried hangouts in the past with various dialer apps, Magicapp, freetone, and honestly none sound very good. At least that's what people tell me. My inet speeds are 30Mbps/2Mbps so that's not an issue. Slow by modern standards but I'm lucky to get even that where I live.
Thanks and have a great day/night/evening/holiday. Sorry for the way too long posts.
