Hello all. As you can see, I've successfully booted openSUSE on the A500. In the coming days, I"ll be updating it, and release a root file system. The rootfs will not have xfce4 installed.
What works:
WiFi
Booting
Audio
YouTube (HTML5)
Chromium (Hexxeh's armhf build)
What doesn't:
Probably everything else. I really haven't tested anything.
Xfce4 is fairly smooth.

Thanks for all the work you do. It's cool that now we are seeing RPM based linux distros running on this tablet!

ca we please get some video or screenshots.
thanks.

The Development section should only be used for actual work that's ready for release. Threads like this one with a promise of something to come should not be posted there until it is ready. If you want to reuse this thread when that time comes, PM me and I'll move it back for you.

I think I rooted, how can I tell?

I followed 42turkeys' excellent How To Root and everything seemed to work as it should. I then used the ROM and root updates from andrewb84uk and they went on OK with no apparent problems. Andrewb84uk has since seemed to lose faith in his own ROMs, although other users, like me, are happy with what he's done. My phone seemed to be working fine, I can boot into recovery mode, and I really like some of the new features on 2.1.
So, my question is this; how can I tell that the root worked OK? I never really investigated the OS too much when it was running 1.5, so I'm not sure I'd spot too many of the subtle differences. Also, it is an updated OS, so any change I see may simply be an update rather than the result of root.
Does simply the fact that I can boot in recovery mode confirm that root is successful?
Go to the android market and type in Screenshot in search...
Download the app and see if it works...
If it does your rooted!
It it doesn't your not rooted!
See below...
It works! Many thanks...

DVP ECompass App (Working) - Updated 2/15/2011

DVP indeed has a ECompass App. I will try to extract it and wrap in a new App.
Edit:
Finally cracked open DVP's native COM (OurCOM.dll) and got the DVP Compass app working.
Can't tell if the Compass is showing the right magnetic north (same was the case with the stock Compass app also) - atleast i got it working.
Here is the linky to the App (XDA WP7 Hacking Dev forum)

Will be working on it with lj50036 this weekend.
Nice to have Omni based rom on our shield
@sbdags
Great initiative.
Will of course flash and test it when you make it available.
Hope you get the stylus to work!
It's a rough build. Got a lot to fix first.
Compiled just straight Omni a few weeks ago. Same thing happened for me. Very buggy.

Yeah seems to be based off 5.0.1 sources and wifi doesn't work...
Hope you can get it fixed.
By the way I have a Lte Europe version.
OK this is just the WiFi version for now:
First Beta of Zombi-pop is up
http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/orig-development/rom-t3194966
This is very exiting! I have the EU LTE version and look forward to taking Z for a spin. It's kept my Asus TF700T running well. Thanks for brining this to the Shield Tablet.
I want is android 6 .
Beta 2 is up!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/orig-development/rom-t3194966
20150912 ZOMBi-POP 5.1.1 Beta 2 changes
- Re-based from omni-5.1.1-20150909-zombi_wx_na_wf-KANG maintained by lj50036, hardslog, sbdags
- Updated vendor blobs to rel-st8-l-r6-partner
- New Kernel - Updated kernel source to rel-st8-l-r6-shieldtablet
- Updated ESFileExplorer to version 4.0.2.1
Maybe I put it in the wrong dev forum as hardly anyone seems to be trying it.
The rom flies for me! lj50036 and will be testing F2FS later which should give even more speed.
Thank you for the great work, but yes, you're right, this is the wrong forum. You should have posted this in the original android development forum.
