Anyone got Google Sky Map Working? / Compass issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone here has Google Sky Map fully working on a Nexus 7? On my N7 this app never points me to South - I am always stuck between West - North - East. When I try to point it to south I always get north instead.
I've also verified the behavior with a compass app. If I place my N7 flat on a table the compass is working well, but if I am holding it in my hands right in front of me (USB connector pointing to the ground) I get the same behavior as in Sky Map (south=north, north=north).
Is the compass even supposed to work when holding the tablet with the USB connector pointing to the ground?
Edit: I am experiencing this issue in stock 4.1.2 and Paranoid Android 2.20
Thanks in advance,
mcsmart

My Samsung Nexus S has exactly the same. It's a hardware problem

Hey bro try using the app space junk I have it on my NEXUS7 with no problems at all and in my opinion it's far better GOD BLESS YOU

Make sense to me the compass working only in horizontal position

Thanks for the hints, guys.
I managed to get it working: all I did was calibrate the compass with GPS Status. I never thought this could make a difference, but it did. Cool. I'm glad my N7 is not one of those devices with broken sensors

State of the Compass on Vibrant?

Big thanks to all the rom devs out there working hard on the sweet froyoish goodness. I've seen a lot of work on the GPS issues that have turned it into a trustworthy device, but very little mention of the compass.
What is the consensus on this? Is it just crappy hardware that won't ever get fixed? Bad gravity? I miss my google sky!
yeah, why is the Compass so twitchy like a crackhead
I wouldn't say it's twitchy. I've never noticed mine jumping around.
I did notice it pointing the opposite direction I was traveling yesterday down the interstate in Google Maps, though.
When I turned the phone, the compass didn't move (I was in the passenger side, for those wondering ).
I think it's just bad hardware that's very susceptible to interference. I've seen it work properly every now and then, but most of the time it jumps around like crazy.

Well, oddly enough the GPS was accurate that time, but the compass wasn't.
I think Google Maps had me about a block or two behind where I was on the Interstate, though (judging by where I was in the software when I got to curves or intersections/exits).
Bing Maps seemed more accurate, but it doesn't have a compas on the screen (or I haven't found the setting for it, don't think I've even gone into Bing Settings yet) and it lack Voice Guided Navigation on Android.
Isn't Google Maps Navigation still in Beta? Maybe something is wrong IRT the software. Last time I tried Catch Compass (which was admittedly over a month ago, before the JI6 update) it actually seemed rather accurate... It would turn as I'd turn and everything. /shrugs/ Dunno what the issue is with it.
Interesting. Some apps seem to pull heading info from the gpd, while others will attemp to use the compass sensor. Using something like tricorder shows the compass to show north regardless.
I guess it's just one of those things

Nexus Compass failing

Compass is not working (model 9023 Dutch). I'am not the only one reporting this. Apps like streetview are not working in compass mode.
When running GPS status the needle is pointing everywhere but the right direction. Callibrate does not work.
Anybody an idea if this a hardware or software issue?
there have been reports that the nfc chip affects the compass. try removing the back to see if it helps. though the back plate is only one part of the nfc system i think.
I tried it without the backcover with no results. Nfc is turned of btw because its of no use in holland.
me too..my i9023 have the bug..
who is same too?
You should star this issue so Google is urged to fix it!

compass needs calibration
Hi,
I have the same problem on i9023, the compass needs calibration after each boot... without calibration the compass is stuck...
In which file calibration results are stored ? because those results seem lost when the phone is turned off
I gave up. The compass is a failing in every way. I could sent it back, but there are reports that a replacement has the same issues. The sensors are a piece of crapp or the software can not handle them properly. Either way this sucks.

Compass not working
Hey,
I've tried calibrating the compass on my Nexus S numerous times.
We have 4 Nexus S' in the house, each with the same problem.
Compass never calibrates.
Google SkyMap doesn't work because of this issue.
Does anyone know if there is a fix?
I've noticed some links to report it to google so that's what I'll do but does anyone know why this is happening? I tried the backplate removal, nothing.
On all 4 phones I am running : I9020, KD1, GRJ22. Android 2.3.4
Hi, you can return your phone(s) because its a design failure. But I didn't because the nexux S is still a great phone. There a threads about this issue, but amazingly enough not that many that samsung or google feel the urge to take action. I would expect massive complaints, but probally a compass is not a first requirement for many people. Strange because even Maps is not working good if you navigate during walking.

Compass issue question

Hey all.
I did some searching but couldn't find if a resolution has occurred. Has anyone made a fix for the compass being off its axes? I use 3d compass. When I tilt right, the on-screen compass points up. Etc.
I know this was once discussed. Would exchanging it solve that issue?

I believed this issue is with the developer of the software...
software that were made for phone should be updated for tablet & especially Honeycomb ... as the accelerometer/compass is reverse..etc
some appz can run on tablet properly... but it also need to support HC ( not just froyo/Gingerbread only )
there were some games that were like this ( opposite/upside down... ).... dev updated their software and it works fine in tablet
Oh that's great. Is there a good app to test the tablets compass?
It is strange that vendetta online wasn't an app that was playable due to the compass. Seems like that was all the hype for this tablet.

Try gps status in the market! It's free, does good stuff!
GPS status works ok, but remember to calibrate the compass (wave it around in a figure 8) each time you try to use it. GPS essentials does NOT work, the compass is off by 90 degrees.

GPS lock

Cannot seem to get a gps lock at all on my device. Possible issues.. Fault product and needs replacing?
Any ideas please.

Must be faulty. My N7 has the best GPS of any Android device I have used. After a dismal experience with multiple Android phones, I held my breath as I walked out my door and fired up GPS Test for the first time. I got 10 sats locked almost instantly. 10-12 sats is the usual standing outside, and the thing tracks great lying on the console in the car between the two front seats, whereas most of my other devices tracked poorly or not at all unless they were on the dashboard under the windshield.
GPS on this thing is pretty fast, it's locked in 2 or 3 sec.
instant lock here in my home... But until you move around a bit Say drive down the street google maps is off.it shows me in the back bedrooms in my neighbors house across the road.. a few houndred feet away . once i drive to end of street it finds me spot on until i turn it off and on again .
question thou..
ARE YOU STOCK?
if not what rom?
have you asked in the rom developers thread about this issue ?
you can try gps status tool from the market.
go into settings and reset .. then re download data. do this outside with clear line of sight ..
Probably defect but it could be because you're using a custom ROM?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
If you are rooted, install a program from play store called faster fix.
Use this to set the region you are in and that will speed up the GPS lock.
If you flash a custom rom you should run this, even after a basic rom update as the update resets the gps config .

[Q] Compass not working

My Nexus 4's compass is only pointing south. It shifts slightly to the east/west when I turn but doesn't move very much. I've made sure that there is no magnetic interference around, took the bumper off, and have tried several reboots. I noticed this a few days ago in the Ingress app, and confirmed the issue with a compass app. I am running the stock ROM (rooted) on the latest version of Jelly Bean (JWR66Y). I suspect it may be a bug in the software because my sister (in a completely different part of the world) is reporting that her compass is also stuck on south on her Nexus 4 (also stock but not rooted). I suppose it is possible that we both have faulty compass sensors, but since this is a recent issue that I only noticed sometime after the recent Jelly Bean update, I was wondering if others were experiencing this issue as well. Thank you for your responses and potential solutions.
Have you tried calibrating it? Hold your phone in your hand and make figure 8s with your wrist. I have no clue what that's supposed to look like though

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have already tried to calibrate it several times since I noticed the problem.
