How Productive? - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Are you when using your Note 10.1?
Alot of times i feel i fall behind others while trying to 'setup' my Note for intake(i dont know how people type so fast on an iPad). in class, getting slides or document with s-note side by side, i see people faster with just printouts. This is compounded when the prof. switches between multiple documents/slidedecks.
the same goes for meetings. I often find im trying to format and i miss half of what was actually said.
It may be the fact im not really great at taking notes anyway, but i still feel after a month of use, the experience is uncomfortable and is often subtraction by addition. I never was productive with my iPad either, but i see people typing very quickly with theirs. I just would study powerpoints on it.
My Note 1 same thing. A big post-it pad work much more effectively when walking up to a coworker. Maybe its the looking down/at a screen effect.
Maybe someone can come up with a training course/regime to help people like me to be more productive. i mean, thats what i bought it for.

I use my Note for everything (Love this device). Most importantly, I use it in all of my engineering classes. So, I'd have to say that I'm turbo-productive.

Same here. By the time I could dig a pen and pad out, my Note and stylus are already rockin. I do nearly everything on it and feel resentful if I have to use my laptop for anything.

I think i spend too much time looking at the screen/making sure my words are being converted correctly(im not a great speller).
Any tips?

Do handwritten notes. That's the best way. I as use sugarsync so I can have all my scanned class handouts accessible even when my computer isn't on. It also autosyncs so I don't have to so much. I also have a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but I have yet to use them. I have only used one piece of paper since school started. The note's advantage over iPad is its pen. If you don't use it why did you buy a Note 10.1? For a typing tablet the Transformer Prime Infinity would have been the tablet to get.

I am constantly reaching for the Undo button when Im not using my Note. I do my physics labs on lecture notes, my calculus notes as well, and my french homework. I find that the only thing missing is a full Microsoft Word (next year?) but Office suite suffices. I also have to convert my Physics teacher's power points using MS as I haven't found an app that can do it without messing up the slides so the only way to do it is before class. All my teachers' presentations are available online so that helps with being prepared.

I second using handwritten notes vs written-to-type or even typed notes, unless you connect a physical keyboard.
My only other issue is how with my writing style s-notes still zooms in from time to time with my palm

Try a different HWR keyboard? Don't know if it will help. I use 7notes with mazec. Nothing else gets my weird writing.

Have you tried to zoom on a new note with your fingers while in pen mode but with the pen unlocked? For me this gets rid of the red box and then I lock the pen and no more zoom.

I use the s-Pen with HWR native Samsung Keyboard.

I'm extremely productive except when I'm not.
Seriously though just read and experiment and see what works for you.

It usually does a great job (this iswritten)|but things like Commas awt the letter 1(See) often meet to be written over. I guess I should just edit mistakes After, using another program negates the uses of multi side by side.

Not much space to write in multi screen...
Is there a way to Minimize a app that is in multiwindow? Sometimes I want the S-note to go to full screen, and not close the other app completely.

Think you need to get used to what works for you first. I use s-notes for notes in class and also at work. Love this tablet.

I was the first official US purchase. I have tons of meetings with banks and work and in class two times a week.
A tutorial / training program might help some of us improve our skills.
I did just do my HW by cropping the questions from a PDF scan of textbook and posting into s-Note side by side. I just feel when time is tight I seem to need to pay more attention to what the device is doing. Alot of re - writing words.
Thanks anyway all.

Ths is my journal/sketchpad/e-reader/comunication/media hub. If the note 10.1 keyboard dock were released i'd be using this for web design and blogging too.

Sounds like you want the ATIV series. looks intersting. Wonder if the S - Pen will have all the same functions, may get if it does.

I use my note to watch YouTube and browse the net, used the s-pen twice with s-note and ps touch. Basically have no use for the s-pen at the moment. Wouldn't replace the note for any other tablet luvin it.

Nexus 7 for notes.

I'm looking for a tablet to take notes on in college classes. I was wondering if the Nexus 7 would be a good choice, I assume stylus' work with it. I'm looking at either the Hand Stylus or the New Trent stylus. Are there any apps specifically for note taking and is the battery life enough to withstand a day of classes? Also, does it have syncing with computer and or phone? I use a Droid RAZR.
Thanks!
You could use Google drive, basically it's a cloud storage system which automatically syncs docs from your phone, tablet, laptop etc. It has a basic word processing function which would be good for using for taking notes. As for battery, you should be OK. I'm currently on 13% after 6.5 hours of screen on time which is made up of a mixture of playing games and browsing today.
Hope this helps,
Rik.

The battery lasts for about 8 hours of watching video so should easily be good for a whole day of classes. Any capacitative stylus will work but some have a really spongy tip that can make writing difficult; best get some recommendations on which one to get. You might find it quicker to use Swype which is quicker than just about every other keyboard.
For note taking, I would recommend Evernote. Install it on your tablet and phone, sign up for an account, and it will automatically sync between the two whenever you're online. And though it's cloud-based, it keeps a local copy of your notes.

Thank you both for your answers. Quick question; Does google Drive or Evernote allow for hand writing? That's the main purpose of the stylus, so I can actually write on the tablet, I prefer the feeling of a pen, but want the versatility of a tablet.

Evernote certainly doesn't and I'm pretty sure that Drive/Docs doesn't either. Note Everything lets you create what it calls a Paint Note that you can write on but it's only one screen in height.

I have a USB on-the-go cable that I use with my Logitech K400, the keyboard is wireless over USB so the USB receiver plugs into the adapter and to the tablet. I wish they made the K400 with bluetooth but I can live with the dongle. To be honest, I find that the 7 inch form factor is actually a good size for the software keyboard because in portrait it's still easy to reach all the keys with your thumbs, though when I really need to take notes and be efficient I will use the full size keyboard.
Try the free version of Lecturenotes and see if that is what you are after?

Just my .02. Don't buy the 7 for notes. Capacitive pen writing sucks. Plain and simple, I've tried it and it is worthless. If you really want to hand write notes on your tablet, then get a flyer/evo view 4g/lenovo thinkpad/note 10.1. That's the only way to go, you need ntrig, or whatever the tech that Samsung uses is. I carry both my evo view and 7 to school. But I promise, as someone who has tried it, you will be disappointed if you don't get a tab with an active stylus for note taking.
Second, the best app I have found for note taking is Quill. With the integrated evernote in the view being a close second. Third, with Quill you can set it to auto sync with drop box or whatever your cloud storage of preference is.

Just used mine today in a lecture that required drawing diagrams as well as note taking and the TF101 + Supernote are perfect for the job
Also: I find typing with tablet's touchscreens quite fast but the dock is a must have if buying a TF101

Not necessarily true. most NZ companies sell the TF family with the docks included
I used to use antipaper notes, but I recently bought LectureNotes. They're both really good for taking notes with a stylus or writing with your finger (LectureNotes is more customizable by far, but antipaper notes is simpler to use because it has less options). As for typing out notes, it's okay if you have small hands, but I definitely didn't use the keyboard as much as I thought I would. It's mostly just an extra battery for me.
If you want to use the touch screen for handwritten notes then get a Galaxy Note 10.1. If you are thinking of using the optional keyboard dock and use it as a notebook, then you are better off getting a proper PC (netbook or an ultrabook). IMO android/android apps are not mature enough to replace a PC for serious work. But if you are on a tight budget and want a tablet then the TF101 is still an ok choice.

Galaxy Tab was one of my choices too. Why do you recommend it more than the TF101?
I'm buying a tablet because I find it more comfortable to read ebooks with, plus I've just discovered that they can be used as a digital copybook.
My only use would be this: ebook reading, annotations, concept maps
Edit: sorry, I've confused Galaxy Note 10.1 with Tab 10.1
Anyway, how is it better? With touchscreentune, TF seems to be pretty lagless when writing

You mean hand-writing (by pen or finger) or typing? Tf101 only has the problem when typing on url or google (due to the pop-up suggestions). Otherwise it's very good, though quite heavy.

S Pen - what do you use it for?

Hi guys.
First time note user. Coming from galaxy s2 and s3.
Love the note 2. Simply the best smartphone ever made and so glad I went for it even after recently uograding to s3 which I will now sell.
Anyway...I feel like I should use the pen more. So want to see how others are using it? I have looked at s-note but not sure how I would use that. So if you have examples of how you would use that. That woule be good. Any other apps I can download to get good use?
I find it quicker to type with my fingers. Is this the same for everyone?

The only app i use the pen for is photo art
Its a nice feature but its not obligatory to use it imho
Only once i needed to note something fast and i used it.
but i know its there if i need it.
I had s1 , s2 and s3 too , and i am addicted to swype so i can't type with anything else.
I use it to learn to write japanese character on ankidroid.
I think that the Galaxy note 2 is just the best device to learn a foreign language on the go.
Signing contracts and documents. Instead of printing and scanning/faxing it back to them. I just sign it with my s pen and email it back to them.
Emailing photos and marking it up with the s pen is so much more personal and exact when you need to highlight or point something out in the photo.
Writing down a phone number or a quick note
I don't use it daily but it sure is very helpful and flexible when I do use it.

I use it to take notes, use it for the multi window feature, also a lot on the web especially when they are small links to click, the s pen gives you more precision and where they are sub menus instead of using your fingers the s pen helps a lot. Take screenshots alao
I put mine in a straw and blow it out, it makes for a surprisingly good projectile to shoot at the wife

i don't have mine yet, but when i look at the review video's i think myscript calculator works better for this than s note does.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.visionobjects.calculator
Haven't found any S pen optmized apps other than stock, so the main use of Spen for me is to show off When I was putting a photo note yesterday, people were saying WOW
I've never taken the pen out of the phone and have no plans to do so lol.
Read you manual when you get the phone, it is worth it. The S-Pen is realy deep inbedded in the software mate, try quick commands for instancewhere you can open any app just by a s-pen shortcut command. It is realy great
I use the S-Pen for Games like SEGA Virtua Tennis, to Paint, Notes,Web and to make screenshots.
Whenever I'm on web, it works like a mice, so gotta have it in hand. Yahoo, espnstar a lot of websites have it optimized well.
In fact, it's always outside holster for me, whether on my hand or not.

It is good pen and function!!
Does it work with draw something? i really love that game and dont want to buy another stylus just to play it.
If you enable the pop up s-note, then it s-pen works just like pen and paper, kinda.
Pull out the s-pen (s-note pops up automatically). scribble whatever (reminder, phone number, address/etc), then just stick the pen right back in. The contents are saved automatically.
I've used it a few times to annotate pictures. circling stuff and writing 'park here', or 'click here', etc.
It's super useful for that, rather than sending a screen shot and saying 'hit the click the option about 2/3s way down'

Comparisons to Wacom tablet

Hi there I'm thinking of getting a galaxy note 10.1 to maybe enhance my digital art, can't afford to buy a critiq as it's way more than I can afford and when I saw this tablet I just knew I wanted one.
I'm used to using a Wacom tablet but it has to be connected to my laptop and a tablet seems like a great way to do paintings outside without the hassle of bringing an extra laptop.
How would you compare it to a Wacom and is it as easy to use and is the pressure sensitive pen as good as the pens that come with Wacom tablets.
I've seen reviews about the galaxy 10.1 but they were by phone and tablet reviewers that didn't really do any art and just talked about the specifications and benchmarks and the hardware.
I was either thinking of getting this tablet and having to save more to buy it or buy a cheaper tablet and get a dagi stylus.
What are your views?

The wacom pens work on the note 10.1 and it has a wacom digitiser. I have had no problems and find the pen quite good with different levels of pressure sensitivity, but I'm no artist...
There have been mixed reviews and threads about problems with the s-pen but I can't say I have had any. The best bet would be to go to a store and try it out... Just remember that the store demo's are used and abused by the public so allow for that...

I did the same thing, transitioned from a wacom tablet/desktop set up to the note 10.1 it's really amazing and has got me drawing all the time again!!!! It's easy to sketch even in broad daylight and the battery lasts about 10 hours. This also was a compromise for the cintiq...which I also can't afford, I'm glad I did it.

Hopefully when I get the 10.1 it will inspire me and motivate me to do more and maybe one day make some money from it as there are sites where people buy original digital art.

I have an Intuos 3 on my PC at home. I haven't used it extensively (my dad passed it on to me), but I have used it here and there.
Having just gotten my Note 10.1, I can say it's basically the exact same feel and functionality. The difference being that (like the Cintiq) you're drawing right on the screen - which I find much easier.
Cool can't wait to get mine as I've been wanting a good tablet, I've only got the Wacom cth-460 bamboo pen and touch.
It's okay but want to do more

I've been waffling over getting a tablet for a while now. But when I read about the functionality of the Note 10.1 I was sold. Part of the reason I don't use my Intuos very often is because I have a hard time with the disconnect between looking at the screen on my desk while drawing on the tablet on my lap (or keyboard tray). Even with the cursor displaying where my stylus is, I find it hard to draw.
Interestingly I've never had issues with using a mouse, nor keyboard, and I'm an avid PC gamer. Just something about drawing with a stylus that doesn't work for me on a typical PC setup.
On the Note 10.1, it's like drawing on paper (as far as the brain-to-hand connection goes).

Same here, you have to have pretty good hand to eye coordinating to even produce anything on a wacom tablet and it takes some getting used to.
I like the idea of the 10.1 as it's like painting without the hassle of buying paints and canvas plus the resson I love digital art the most is I'm colour blind and found tablets easier to paint with.

Strange, my drawing and painting studio core made us learn to divorce the hand from the eye... "If you're not looking at your model, then you're making it up." was what I always learned... I figured that's why wacom went ahead with screen-less tablets, they figured artists could handle it. =D

LOL. Makes sense. I just never took an art class (beyond grade 10). Kind of funny now that I think about it, having worked as a graphic designer for 9 years.
I think the main compromise going between my Intuos and Note 10.1 is not hardware related, but software. There isn't any software that I know of in Android that can easily handle a large PSD file along with my various adjustment layers. But, for those projects, I shrink or flatten a copy before I work on it on the tablet. Aside from that, the only thing it seems to be missing is tilt sensitivity, which I'm not quite good enough to perceive anyway.

What does your note do for you?

I'm sure this has been talked about elsewhere in bits and pieces, and maybe there is an appropriate thread, but I didn't see one exactly.
What do you use your note for? What does your note allow you to do that you couldn't with another tablet? Or, what works for you? Is there some sequence of apps you use in conjunction that allow you to get things done better than before?
I know that I personally just use Lecture Notes and Polaris Office almost non stop. I'm constantly taking notes, cutting from texts in polaris, pasting into LN, exporting pdf's for email, etc. I can't help but feel that there's functionality I'm overlooking, tips, or shortcuts that really take advantage of even more of the notes features.
Anyone have any thoughts they'd like to share? About anything they use the note for really, not just my particular needs.
As a side note. Samsung needs to pay Acadoid money and have S notes redesigned. S note is missing so much seemingly simple functionality that it's baffling. They had some really good ideas and then half a**ed the job. Thank god for LN's
my note has tv remote :silly:
When I want to travel light, it serves as a laptop repacement since I can handle office tasks using Polaris or Kingsoft Office. Clearly, email support is excellent. I run Klock Mobile for tracking time for billing purposes. I can use VOIP when on WIFI should my smartphone battery be low. I love reading my daily newspapers online on the Note. I also love reading e-books on it. I'm just an amateur doodler, but I enjoy drawing and painting with the s-pen. I don't watch a lot of movies or television, but it's nice to be able to watch media on the note when I've got bored kids and we're traveling. With 2GB of RAM onboard and the Exynos processor, its performance makes it a joy to use.
Multitask for my car..

I only have to take my note to class.. I use it to take notes, and browse the textbook without having to lug all of that crap along. I use it for watching stuff as well, but mostly the note-taking..
(I like to sketch stuff too, but I don't have the time at the moment, but I did a couple of drawings when I first got it!)
I use it for the different job(s)/ jobsite(s) I have. I can keep notes on Sequence of Operations for each job, and keep all notebooks handy so if I'm at one site, and need information when someone calls me about another- it's all right there.
Loving it so far- just hate Android apps "stretching"
I have combined Write, Adaptive Rotation Lock and a Boxwave screen protector to make my Note 10.1 behave and feel very much like writing on a note pad.
I combine Dropbox and Kingsoft Office to keep up to date with my budget when I am not at my laptop.
My note keeps me entertained at work (which is a godsend sometimes) and also keeps my nieces/nephew entertained when they come over. They love to use the pen on drawing/colouring apps.
Note 2? Or you mean Note 10.1? Isn't there another forum for Note 2 users?
My Not I used like a mix of fun and work.... Bought him last month and I loved it... Very good speed.. Fantastic Tablet
I use mine for work and music.
Write, s note, polaris, calculator. Rocketplayer, mx player. Lots of stuff, I use it all day tethered to my GN2.

Thanks for the catch. Made the correction. I have both and sometimes get the forum I am on mixed up do to both being so much alike.
I think the ability to handle PDFs is extremely important for the Note 10.1. The SD slot and SPen mean that you can easily load up a ton of PDFs and work with them.
I only wish that Samsung would realize this and build in some kind of killer PDF app that is fast and optimized for SPen annotation.

Reading. Mainly using the Nook app and imported epubs into Aldiko. I also use flipboard and springpad a lot.
I use it for work as an IT Consultant almost everday. If it had ethernet I could replace my laptop. Of course Polaris, S-Memo and S-Calendar see heavy usage.
I also do email, facebook, browsing, etc.
Love this tablet.

If only I had this went I went to school.
I use my note 10.1 as a big ass cellphone that lasts longer. I mainly use it as a GPS device (Waze) and as a drawing pad (Sketchbook Pro Mobile).
Just curious, didn't it too heavy to use as a ebook reader?

Yeah you're telling me. Instead of lugging about half a dozen heavy textbooks plus my notebooks I could have just carried around this thing.

Not really. I can load 2 pages side by side, dim the screen slightly and read for hours.
