My Xoom learned a new trick... - Xoom General

...Play dead.
We all know how brilliant a design the charge cord adapter is, I myself am on to my third one in almost two years. Well, the tablet stopped charging today and no matter which wall outlet I used or how much I wiggled the lead I could not make the light come on. Seeing that my Verizon contract is all but done at the end of this month and rather than buy another charge cord I decided to buy a new tab. I just picked up the new Asus Transformer Infinity, not too bad so far. Anyways, about 20 minutes after getting home with neither tablet charged to a useable level, the power goes out for a couple hours- just my luck too. When the power came back on suddenly the light on the Xoom came on. I hadn't touched it since I gave up on trying to get it to charge. Now here I am with two tablets and a $500 hole in my pocket. I know I was bound to get a new one eventually so I'm going to hang on to it but I never saw it happening like this.
Has anyone else had any issues regarding their chargers? Or anything unusual occur in general? I'm sure I'm not alone.

Ouch I would hate to folk out another $500 dollars for a new tablet even though my old one still works. I don't use my tablet for any intensive apps like games, so a new one would be pretty pointless for me. I never had any issues with my charger, well one time one of my charger did blow up, but that's because the battery was faulty for my jump charger for my car. Other than that, you might have some dust in the charger pin hole? Just a guess really.

I'm on my third charger since March. Original Motorola one died, second one (off eBay) burnt out, current one (off eBay) still working but I can't use the touchscreen while unit is charging.
I live remote using an off-grid power supply so this may have something to do with it.

Huh. I have four of them, from the original back in Feb '11 to one I was given a few months back, and they all work perfectly- and most of 'em are used every week (two at home, one in the office, one for travel).

agreed with kcrudup, ive been through 2, the only reason being i snapped the connector on the first one when i pulled it out at a bad angle

The charger that came with my refurbished Xoom lasted almost through the first charge. I thought I was going to have to send the whole thing back until I took it into the Verizon store and verified that it charged with a different charger. I've since got one off eBay and another with the standard dock. Both have been holding out so far.
Oh and my Xoom touch screen doesn't respond while charging either. Somewhere I read that a factory reset will fix that... but I'm waiting until my 90 day warantee is up to put EOS on it since my BT mouse works while it is charging.

My original charger is still working and I got my tablet 8 months back. I think the charger has lasted pretty well. How long did peoples original ones seem to last?

That's an electrical problem (noise and/or grounding issues with the charger raise the "noise floor" so the touchscreen controller has trouble determining what's a valid touch) and can't be cured by any reset, factory or full or ...
Your issue is your charger- try another.

Just a quick note.. I've had the ebay sourced chargers fail on my xoom ( and other devices). I found that the power ratings on some of them are rather optimistic... they simply are running at the outer limits to charge the tablet and failure can be internal to the power unit...best case.. or worst case failure dumps overvoltage or raw AC power to the tablet.
Fortunately my failed units were of the internal power supply version.. and aside from bad smells no real damage was done.
I have successfully built charger/power units after scavenging the connector from my failed power supplies and using a minimum 1.5 amp 12v dc supply... they seem to work fine.. and keeping one handy is much more convenient than wondering where I last used it :fingers-crossed:
as always.. your mileage may vary

Hmm, that's interesting. Unfortunately this charger is from Verizon and i would surely hope that their stuff work to the correct specs. I wonder sometimes that maybe the problem could be with the contact inside the tablet. Could that have something to so with it?

I think the Motorola/Verizon chargrs are good. I think the earthing issue is with the cheap chargers from China.

When I lost my cellphone charger I had to buy a Chinese one, well, when charging it looked like possessed by the Devil itself lol! The screen started acting strange and I wasn't able to control it... Then I found my original charger and the exorcism was complete lol^2! BTW, a guy on X10 mini pro community (one of the best developers I ever met - my favorite one ) lost a cellphone with a Chinese charger, so what can I say - be careful with it!

Phone won't charge :(

I'm on my phone now so I can't find the thread on this if there is one. I thought i was the only one with the issue, but I found an article on engadget.
I have a best buy protection but no best buy has any, anymore.
I'm going to make this quick, which was the best solution for getting a replacement? My 30 day ran out, and no best buys have any atm. I'm going to call like once a week and hope some get some in, and hope they don't lie about it.

Take it to the store to at least set them in motion to get you another. Also, another store might have one. Possibly a drive, but worth it. In any case the best thing to do is to let them see it and know about the problem.
my brothers and my phones were doing this as well. turned out it wasnt the usb port but it was his cable. the cables htc sends are pretty weak. ive gone through 2 so far. you could try a new cable. my evo has bungee jumped off my night stand a few times...wont charge right unless i put side pressure on cable...after new cable charges fine.
ive had the same thing just recently happen to me. i bought some cheap cables off of ebay and they worked for a week or so then my phone stopped charging and being recognized as being plugged in then i tried the cable supplied by HTC and same thing! Now, its very sporadic. None of the cables i have work in the front usb ports (1 in a separate installed card reader and 2 infront of the case), SOMETIMES the HTC cable will work with the ports in the back and the only time i can get a consistent charge and data signal to the computer is through a powered usb hub(power cord to the wall) with the HTC cable, one of the cheap chinese cables i shortened fro 3 feet to about 2 and another small cable (maybe 1-1.5ft) cable i got in desperate times at microcenter. The fact that in consistently works in the powered hub tells me that somehow, something with the amperage needed to register as plugged in or charged has changed or gone wrong on the Evo side because my machine is a well built custom build computer and i tested it in 2 other high-end custom builds i did for friends of mine and i have the same problem through all of their usb ports as well, so i know its not my motherboard giving me lip. i would like to here another statement from HTC soon about this as more people start becoming more vocal about this issue.
BTW, this literally started happening to me 2 days ago and i got mine on release day. HW REV: 02
It seems all too strange to me that this little incident surfaces on the internet basically the EXACT same time i experience it. Sounds like a little quality control in some parts used in the charging circuit got over looked and we have the same part going at about the same time for alot of people.
Wow, you are the first person that I have seen complain about this:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/23/htc-evo-4g-suffering-occasional-micro-usb-port-issues/
I must change the comment I made there now.
Evidently on the last update they changed something vital. Mine won't charge via the computer at all. It just stays at whatever percentage it's presently at. It won't drain either though. I've tried three different batteries too. All the same thing. The only way I can charge is by plugging it into the wall socket.

Ditto the included cable stopped working within 2 weeks, and I've gone through 3 car chargers. I have yet to get a good micro usb charger/cable they are all junk
Wouldn't you know it... As soon as I post something about it, it starts charging again. It charges really slow though. It's taken four hours to charge from 62% to 82% via the computer. It's not even worth it. I'll just have to charge it via the wall plug.
I kind of had the same issue today after installing a new ROM. I removed the HTC Sync earlier to get Revolked 3 working. But after that my phone USB cord wouldn't charge, or even connect. It would for a few seconds, then it would just act like it wasn't plugged in. But installed the HTC Sync again, and was back to normal where my PC would charge the phone.
Hopefully this insight helps someone.

Thats because it "trickle" charges via the USB.. This is why they say if you are having battery issues to charge your phone this way.
Yeah I have the same problem with my phone not charging I was transferring files back and forth and after that it started messing up and I have to put the phone In a weird position for it to charge...very slowly might I add...very weird though that this started at the same time endgadget posted up the article

Brand new transformer will not charge......

ok before i pack this thing up and send it back any tips on getting this thing to charge? i tried the leave unplugged for 20 minutes crap and still nada. i tried factory reset and it still will not charge. intially it would not turn on and after about 20 tries it came on and was charging then i see connect the charger popup. i also have the kayboard it doesnt charge either. i even switched the main plug with my own and nothing. it sucks to spend this type of money (also dont forget searching for it too) on a product and it wont charge.
Can you see the model number on your charger/psu? Take a look here and see if yours matches.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081435
yup i have the 0B-1LF. hmm thats not the defective one right?
No I think yours is OK, it's the 0B-LF that's the faulty unit.
make sure you have the plug end of the charger shoved all the way where it's flush at the end.......you have to really push hard to get it in there.....easy to assume it's all the way in when it's not.
Why not check the OTHER 2 THREADS ON THE FIRST PAGE ALONE for feedback?
The adapter for the charger...make sure you push it hard all the way in.
Make sure that you have the 2 sections of the wall charger fastened together correctly, they're a very tight fit but will snap together after applying quite a bit of force.
the charger was snapped together fine and i have done that about ten times already. ill just keep trying if it dont work by tomorrow then ill just send back for a refund. also i have the 32 gig version if that helps anything.
I have the same charger model as you, same problem. Sent an RMA request and going to leave it on SUPER SLOW USB charge overnight, hopefully it will rise above 10% for the first time!!!

Your solution is TO USE THE OTHER 2 THREADS ON THE FIRST PAGE DEDICATED TO THIS SUBJECT.
Seriously people, making a new thread over a buried thread okay, but there are not one but TWO threads on this subjects on the first 1~2 pages.
ok you posted that earlier and now you posted it again what you want attention or something? thread is made so it is what it is why you keep coming back to it. the other threads had charging issues after they have used it mine is fresh out the box with the docking station. if you cant help why bother posting?
referring you to another thread which is already posted on the subject is helping you. And no those threads also state out of the box no charging.
EDIT: And no I don't want attention, I want idiots like you to stop making 5 threads on the same subject, especially when 2 existing ones are already on the first page.
Charger didn't work - but now it does
This is my first post ever - Please resist the idiot response, even if this post should go elsewhere. Thanks.
I got my transformer and keyboard this past Thursday. It charged fine, and I used it all day Friday. Tried to charge it Friday night and I got the same issue as the folks who've posted here and on the other two threads on the topic. The charging part that plugs into the wall was not even slightly warm - no charging on either pad or keyboard. The charger if have is the supposed revised one - OB-1LF - the one that is supposed to be OK. I plugged and unplugged - waited 20 minutes - Pushed extra hard on the connections - I tried all the suggestions given in these posts and nothing worked.
I called Asus on Saturday and the tech said I'd have to ship the whole thing back - turnaround in 10 days or so. There is nothing wrong at all in anyway with the pad or the keyboard. But no, they would not let me buy another charger. I declined, and called the company I bought it from. They invited me to send it back to them for exchange but they have none in stock - might be mid-June before they could get me a new one...
I charged it overnight using the USB method. Seems to take about 15 hours or so but it will charge that way. Heaven knows how long the keyboard would take to charge!
Yesterday, I tried plugging in the charger again. And it it worked. I have no idea why. It's still working today. I'm back in business, but I have no idea if it will die again, or if it is fixed.
I hope this is helpful to someone.
Posted this in another thread in the accessories sub-forum. I'll put it here to in the hopes it reaches the most people and helps at least a few.
This may sound crazy but hear me out. I have an EEE PC 1005HA netbook. I had situation once where i moved it and noticed it wasn't charging. Then it died and still wouldn't charge. I was upset because it was new and I talked to a friend who mine who is an electrical engineer. He said they likely used some cheap parts in the charger as many companies do for mass volume items.
He suggested i take the charging cable, power brick, and put them in the freezer for an hour. Then take them out, give them about 10 minutes to heat back to room temperature and try again. Sure enough, my EEE Pc charger worked fine after that procedure. I also had several friends with netbook who had issues and i had them try the same thing, after they gave me an insane look for telling them to put the power cable and power brick into their freezer, and they all worked. I'm still using the same cable/power brick that this issue happened with on my eee PC netbook, I have freezered it twice since owning it, but it works great for several months in between.
Since these are both ASUS products I don't think its too far of a leap to think they use the same parts where they can to cut costs, so this freezer method may be worth trying for you.

My TF doesn't do quick charge anymore..!

So after the weekend FW update for TF, my TF doesn't do any quick charge any more after charging from the AC Adapter...it doesn't have the thunder lightnight charging indication in the battery icon but charging very very slow
Anyone has been losing the quick charge capability after the 7/16 FW OTA update? It seems their attempt to fix the battery-drain doc issue causing other issue of the tablet's battery charing itself!
I'm have my own accidental insurance from Walmart - and I'm getting the replacement (that's $80 accidental damage insurance I paid during the checkout at walmart.com - now I feel I was smart with that choice!)
Anyone if none answers, I'm getting the new or repaired one (probably new one since my current one was "ACCIDENTALLY" dropped in the water totally submerged so I don't think they will be able to fix it at all - that's SMART way to get the new replacement one!
thx you all
Mine stopped being able to quick charge Saturday night. I did not update , running prime. My wall charger will charge, but trickle only, not full power. No charge icons. I have tried factory reset and reseating the prongs in the wall adapter. Im stumped. I dont have a dock so im now gonna have to. All Asus and see what they recommend.
What is quickcharge? Never heard of this...
The transformer will either charge fast, on the provided wall adapter, takes about three hours tops for a full charge or slow trickle charge on usb which can take over twelve hours.
That could be the conspiracy - Asus wants all Asus TF owner to spend additional $150 for their tablet - It's Taiwanese company, they can do anything they want to in US market LOL
Pretend to be the hotfix to fix the battery drain of the tablet while docking to the keyboard dockstation but in the reverese to cause another issue on the tablet alone that it won't be doing quick charge unless plug into the dockstation - I could see it all possibly happen
Asus - you heard that? F U! Ah I still use your product for another 2 years but I will get new one for every 12 months because I have the accidental damage insurance - they will replace me a new one when I want to hahahah!

I really hope you're not serious.
If asus was the devil they would charge $500 for the tablet and another 200 for the dock so "clever" customers would think they're getting a "premium" device like an apple product.
found it why I lost my quick charge - it is because of my charging cable - freaking charging cable!!!! it is broken at the round proprietary connector - in now way to defect the way how the charging cable connect to the tablet but somehow it is degraded and allow only trickle charge
Who cares,,,I'm sending them all back to Walmart to get the replacement one I meant whole unit tablet & power ac, charging cable since I bought my accidental damage insurance....$80/2year - pretty good deal and feel good that I purchased the coverage plan at that time!
thx,
rcjpth
I can't see any sort of damage or wear on my cable. Looks as good as it did out of the box. I still can't quick charge. Trickle does work, i went and bought a dock today at best Buy. The dock works and charges the tablet, however now its dead and the cable wont chage the dock either. so its either the cable is bad somehow or the wall adapter is bad. either way im pissed. ASUS tech support is uselss they too my information and hung up and said they'd call back. There arent ny more chargers in stock anywhere. Im just ****ed unless i want to return it to tiger direct.
Sending the whole thing back and buying something else is the only option in the US since you cannot actually buy the cable anywhere as far as I know. Once the cable is gone, you can't use the tablet.

I don't think the TF or it's dock was every designed to change from a 5 Volt source such as a USB 2.0 port. I have not seen any documentation from Asus giving you that option.

Also impossible. Been over 30 days since buying it at Tiger Direct, they directed me to ASUS support phone number where an Indian Man took my information and hung up on me saying they'd get back to me.

grrrr - Transformer stopped charging!

My Transformer stopped charging last night - think my power adapter has borked! I do so wish they had used a standard charger as I have loads that should work but don't because of it. Oh welll - it's under 6 months old and UK law is pretty good so back to the shop later to make them replace it. I'll have to argue though as they'll refuse to start with.
Got it trickle charging for today to see if it's up and running for later.
I do really wish that people could make stuff that lasted. OH's iPad has lasted for 2 years (ish) with no issues at all. Both my Android pads have failed within 6 months (though one was an Archos and the build quality was dire).
Cross fingers for me...
Well thanks to you all that suggested the freezer fix. Worked perfectly.
For all those in history that stumble on this post - what I did was put it in a zip lock bag and in the freezer for 15 mins. All worked fine after that.
I nerver had any charging or charger issue since my first phone, that means about 2 years.
Did you tried another with another charger ? I mean try your usb wire on an other charger

Other chargers won't work as they don't put out enough power. I am seeing if the cable is the issue by attempting a trickle charge. If that doesn't work then the TF itself is at fault.
I've not had many issues with stuff at all. Just the two android tablets I've had. Suppose I could just be unlucky.
I don't know if it's luck. Although we all want low prices I think cost savings by the manufacturers have gotten to the point where quality has suffered. I've never had any problems with electronics but I'm on my THIRD rma with my Transformer, the powerswitch broke, the dock was draining the tablet, and now after ICS it's not working at all. I would gladly have paid more for a higher build quality. It may be a coincidence, but no more Asus for me.
Put the charger in the freezer for 15 minutes.
Worked for me
If it turns out that the charger is bad, rather than replace it with another poorly designed charger, get a Dynex.DX-UA universal charger. Then you will have both AC and Dc charging capability.

Try to play w/ internal connections on the charger. Mine was jacked up and never charged half the time so I slid the wall plug off of it and bent the wires so they pressed a little harder against the inside and haven't had issues in 6 months.
Unfortunately this is a common issue. I have 3 tf 101s and one of them came with a borked charger. All those tricks work butthe issue will almost be guaranteed to return. Just go but a charger from radio shack or something... They make a 12v charger that has interchangeable connectors, including USB. Works like a charm... Sets you back about 20 bucks but well worth it.
Asus build quality does have some issues, I nor anyone I know personally have ever had problems aside from the chargers. But you hear of plenty of issues here... Honestly most are user generated issues with bad flashes and inproper use, but there are legitimate issue as well. Dock drain is the most notorious that comes to mind, but even a lot of those were because people had the no sleep while charging setting enabled.

I didn't root my tablet. I bought this tablet 7 days ago and i was never able to get it past 80%. I have tried turning it off and then charging and that didn't work either.
Same thing happened to me. None of the recommendations worked. I ended up purchasing another (official) charger from Office Depot for about $29. I needed to buy another one anyway. The broken adapter is on its way to ASUS via RMA. Note: the shipping may take 2-3 weeks. I didn't like that since I use my transformer a lot when I travel for business.
Putting in the freezer worked for me. The real question is how long will it last and why did it stop working in the first place? Going to call Asus to see if they'll send me a replacement.
I have the same problem now. You should try this to charge it:
1) have the tablet turned on
2) connect power supply like you ordinarily would to charge
3) turn of the tablet by the power button
4) profit?
If you can't get it to turn on
1)plug in your cable to charge
2) if it boots do the above steps if not hold down the power button till it shuts off and quickly hold down the power and volume up button(apex mode) and let it charge
I'm shipping my tablet back for repairs at the end of the month.

I had the same issue, and the following solution worked for me (fixed my charger in under 3 minutes!). Basically you use a small screwdriver and bend two contacts inside the USB port on your charger a little bit.

not charging

im down to 13%, i did a full reset.
i have it turned off currently, it shows a charger is plugged in for about 2 seconds and then that one is not plugged in. i have tried about 5 different chargers now.
anyone else have this? any ideas?
it is at&t stock. never rooted or rommed
i have removed the sim and sd-card.
could it be the battery?
i still have it turned off and plugged in. it had a quick flash of a red battery.
It's been charging for about 30 minutes turned off, powered it up, is taking a charge, just slowly. I think it's a bad battery. I work for att, I'll swap the battery out tomorrow and report if it was a bad battery or not so if others have this issue they will know what's wrong.
OK, went and got a new battery and it did not fix it.
Anyone got any ideas?
I just factory reset it as well, so to recap,
Factory reset, and new battery, 6 different chargers tried. Im assuming bad phone unfixable by me.

had this a couple of days earlier but after removing the battery, swapping wall outlets, (several) Usb2 and usb3 cables it started charging again. I don't know what set it off to start charging again
with the phone on, it did display in the status bar that is was charging, just the battery didn't fill up. So it did recognize the fact that there was power coming through the cable
before it started charging, when the phone was turned off and i put the cable in it, the phone started vibrating with intervals and a line appeared on the screen at longer intervals.
after turning the phone off, the charging led indicator did not burn even though the charging cable was connected
since i've been able to recharge it a couple of times since, i thought it was an one-off freak incident
Just now the problem came back and i'm going through all the stupid things described above: pulling out batteries, switching chargers, blowing down the connecor in case some dust or something else was blocking the pins.
No luck so far.
suggestions are welcome
This happened to my exynos version (India ) yesterday. I remember charging through my laptop before this happened. Strangely after i reconnected it to power it would not charge though the charging icon was showing up. After sometime somehow it started charging again. This has never happened before and I am not sure what's wrong. If this continues I am done with Samsung.
Sad to say I'm having the same issue on my week old Note 3.
It charged fine for the first few days but now I've determined that I have to put slight pressure on the cable to maintain a charging state. Basically if the phone is face down, I have to press down slightly on the USB3.0 connector.
Since I've rooted and flashed I'm not too keen on taking the new phone in for service so I've ordered another cable to test.
I read on another forum that people were having problems charging with the original OEM cable but no problems with USB2.0 cables and replacement USB3.0 cables. Hope that's the case, but it seems to me that the charging port may be bad.
Mine doesn't charge at all via computer when the screen is on (it shows charging, but the charge goes down), only through wall charger...wtf is going on?
If the phone barely charges or not at all when turned on, yet it still detects a charge, there's something running that drains more power than is being supplied. Start by checking active apps.
I had this on the IC Amsterdam - Berlin when I was playing a game, it kept going down at full rate even with the charger connected (The DB has powersockets in their trains, the thing the NS is too cheap to do.). Turned out the game was still running in the background even though I had quit it.
Force-quit everything non-critical in running applications and voila, it started charging. Slowly, but it did.
Another thing that bears relevance to mention is that sometimes there's not enough charge coming through a socket, usually when there's already too many devices on a single group or the socket is limited (like in trains, campsites, planes...)

im having the same problem. im startint to think its is an issue with the usb socket on the phone.
I read some where that if you let the phone go completely flat and then let the phone charge without turning it back on it (just leave it on the sceen with the battery charging icon). I've tried and this seems to help (I only did this yesterday and pluged the phone in again after some use this morning and its charging again).
But I think there is an underlying issue with the hardware sometime my phone indicates that it has connected to dock when this isn't the case, only for a second but I think with the problems charging and the issue with the false dock connection would suggest that there is something wrong with the usb port itself.
Im probably going to take mine in for repair.
mines completly stock. no root etc

This usually happens when there are metalic particles in the USB port.
Have you tried cleaning it with a needle/toothpick? Dont forget under the USB pin.

Thanks, I had a close look for any sort of dirt/conductive sort of material but it seems to be clear.
I keep the phone in a case which protects the ports and keep everything as clean as possible. The phone is only a couple of weeks old so it's still quite fresh.
But i know what you mean the usb terminals are small it would only take a small bit of something to cause a problem.

This might sound crazy, but try this... Drop your phone from a height of about 2 feet onto probably a hard foam or soft wood or that kinda thing.. Drop it on it's back of course. Anyways, 2 Feet is a very short drop for phone to get damaged. Just try.

why?
Had a similar problem recently. Phone just wouldnt hold a charger longer than around 60 minutes.
I was able to take my phone back into the store and get a replacement. It was only 2 weeks old.
Try that
is there a way you can reset the battery as you do when in root?

Apart from the fact that it would take me longer to calculate how much 2 feet is than it takes for the phone to fall, I think I can speak for most people here when I say I'm rather hesitant to let a 700 euro/1200 dollar phone fall off anything.
The idea alone is rather disconcerting...
You could just as well give it a good whack with your flat palm, as the idea is to jar the wiring into place.
'Apply blunt force', One of the more classic troubleshooting approaches. No longer advisable these days, technology is ever so much more fragile than it was in the days of Nokias that could be used to commit murder by means of blunt force trauma and tv's that could electrocute you just by looking at it.

Mate 2 feet is like 2 notebooks high, or 1 closed laptop high. And it's not falling of something, it's likee playfully dropping ur phone. But of course! You shouldn't try it if you don't want to, ok?
And I don't know where you guys buy your phones or what the currency situation is in your countries, but I got my phone for $700 (510 euros) in my country on release day. Which includes 2 years ADH warranty and 2 years regular warranty. :victory:

1000USD+ is very normal for a smartphone in the EU. Long live the Euro... NOT.
The price is still 678euro in the Netherlands (which they make look less cheap by fooling everyone into thinking the price is 578, which it actually is with 100 euro cashback after you buy it... And of course they all fall for it, some even use it as arguments )...
The Note 3 was 750 Euro in the Netherlands (699 Germany where I got it) upon release day, a whopping 1400USD in the exhange ratings at that time. 'So buy it here/there/whereever and have it shipped' (I've had this discussion a thousand times with all those americans) No, there was no regionlock away or even root at that time yet.
All electronic prices are ridiculously, pointlessly high here.
Would that be a 17.3" or 15" laptop? Horizontal or vertical?

Oh well! Bad for you guys! I bought my S4 for $650, sold it $500 after 5 months of use! Then didn't hesitate in spending $700 on the Note 3
2 feet is 0.6096 meters. I said a closed laptop. Not opened. And it's not like its a sure/known fix.. I just said try...
