Hey guys, I was wondering if you could help me figure this out.
I was wondering what the theoretical maximum download speed for the nexus 7 is. When testing my internet connection (speedtest.net) on my pc my download speed is 70Mbps, upload is 10Mbps, which is also my maximum speed (I live 3km away from my provider) When running the test on my nexus 7 with their speed test app downloaded via Google play, I only get around 30-33mbps. Sometimes I'll get a speed of 36 and the highest I've gotten in 40, but this only happens VERY rarely. So I've been trying to figure out if something is set up wrong.
I tried:
different channels from 1 until 11 (12 and 13 don't work)
20 and 40hz, and both simultaneously.
set the router to operate on b/g/n as well as N only
Security is wpa2
inkspeed on the tablet says 65Mbps
Distance : standing next to the router
My router is a netgear R6300. (http://www.netgear.com/R6300#two)
My question is, am I an idiot for thinking that I'm not getting max speed, while ~33mbps is the actual maximum speed that the nexus 7 is capable of. Or am I having connection issues. If so what steps could I take to solve them.
You have my thanks,
One reason I can think of is nexus 7 can not use the 5mhz band in your router, thats why you may be getting half speeds than you are expecting.

I thought about that as well, but my router support wifi N up to 450Mbps on the 2.4ghz freq, so I'm not really sure that's a limiting factor.
70Mbps download. That's fast.

I'm on 60 Meg download and 3 Meg upload and I get the same speeds as you on my nexus using the speedtest app. I think they are the max wireless speeds we can get.
My ipad 3 maxes out at 20 Meg which is surprising.

It's relatively slow We have fiber 500 down and 500 up available here, but It's not yet available in my particular area. I bought the router for that reason. Actually bums me out that I'm going to have 500 mbps available to me, but don't have any devices that can actually benefit from it besides my pc....

Thanks for testing that out, I figured as much. I found another thread where someone mentions that he's also maxing out at around 33mbps.
Although a bit further down the topic, a guy posted a screenshot of his nexus 7 achieving ~47 mbps. Guess he got lucky?..

Your speeds are actually alright. The n7 doesn't have good wifi imo. I am connected to a 100/2 connection in Australia (fastest consumer connection available to my knowledge lol) and I only get about 25/2 on my n7.

Kind of sucks that google went cheapo on the wifi. Would have hoped they would have at least went the 5ghz route. But at least it confirms that there is nothing wrong with my router or wifi settings, but that the nexus 7 just maxed out at ~33Mbps. Surprisingly my GSII does 40~42Mbps.
you guys are lucky bastards. living in rural canada, i get 1.5/0.5 on a good day!
Low value were taken in Switzerland.
High value in usa...

That must be pretty annoying! Here in Australia, most people have connections around the 10/1 mark which is actually a joke for a developed metropolitan area. Luckily fibre infrastructure upgrade are under way!
I live in a metropolitan and manage fine with my 4/0.5 amidst all the fibre optic and vdsl.
Admitted, 0.5 upload does get annoying in some cases. But hey, it's cheap as hell and unlimited bandwidth!

Thats the problem with connections here. They are not cheap and offer limited bandwidth. i.e. my mate is on an adsl2+ connection that only manages 4 down and 0.7up. He pays $70 a month for 200gb.

Wow... I pay 35 and that includes unlimited calls to landlines, national and international.
People here are always complaining how we're overcharged for our network, compared to for instance the Netherlands. And it did take me quite a while to get this deal, literally the cheapest in the country.
But 70 for the same speeds with a 200gb limit, that seems insane!

Our internet here is pretty cheap indeed, since it also comes combined with a land line and a tv package. Prices for our mobile network are of the charts tho'.
hey guys.. i was only getting 10 or so meg down on my 50+ meg connection and I wanted to let you know I fixed it to get what you are getting by removing my bluetooth connection. Turns out, the bluetooth and wifi are handled by one chip so when its busy handing a bluetooth connection, it chops down the download speed of the wifi! So, if you dont need the bluetooth connection, dont use it. (I was using tablet talk to my phone over bluetooth, i swithched it to wifi and that fixed it)
51 mbps max
Hey guys, i live in IIT Delhi, INDIA. Via ethernet we get 100 down and 70-80up (100/70). But my nexus 7 2013 maxes out at 51mbps only. I checked using galaxy s5, s5 showed 90 download. So it is pretty much confirmed they put a limit, or maybe the technology is out dated...

Last Saturday I was with a friend of mine who was very proud of his new iphone4 (he is the "I don't care" type). So I was showing to him the AP system and I tethered to him by 3g connection.
So I had an idea (we have the same telco). I asked him: why don't you run your speedtest app (IOS app to check speed of upload download) twice - one with your own connection and one through mine (through tethering). We ran the test and he achieved 1Mbs through the SGS connection. He then ran the test directly through his own 3g connection (same place / telco) and he only had 200kbs.. You should see his face - he was tapping the "run speedtest" button again and again hoping that he would get better results..
Well done Samsung...
Just try it.. You might make them understand that it is not the bad network responsible for the miserable performance of their phones..
I'm getting inconsistent results using speedtest and my galaxy s. sometimes it hits my cellular's limit, sometimes it gives poor results. I'm talking about tapping "test again" and getting a much poorer result (or better), using hsdpa.
I once achieved around 4.5 Mbps download speed on my SGS through HSDPA, though those results vary depending on the current circumstances...

Strangely this seems to be true. My wife complains about her data speed everyday when she was using the 3GS. Recently I bought the SGS for her and her first reaction after days of using was that the data connection lag is gone.
I finally got to see and play with the IP4 today.
In all serious, I don't know what the fuss about the UI or the phone design. It looks like a hunk of junk compared to my galaxy S.
I wanted to send a video file over bluetooth to compare the screens, but it wouldn't work. I only later realised it must be due to Apple relying on itunes to convert/store files on the phone.
Without simple bluetooth file transfer, how stone age.

i think the ip4 hardware and software are pretty smooth and mostly ok.
but such limitations are indeed very annoying. the other day i was like "hey i'll send u the ringtone i made since u like it"
oops, that cannot actually work
and so on.. basically could just share pictures.
then there's the classics "u could watch this <h264 mkv file> report we made in the train" nope, he can't he has an iphone, need itunes + conversion.
and so on.
heck, we also jailbroke that iphone, installed mplayer - nope mplayer jailbroken doesn't support iOS4 yet. theres also a couple of players on the store - but nope, they can only stream stuff and you must copy using hacks from a computer (still no bt transfer)
then.. we had to forward a .odt (like doc) per email on the iphone.. nope.. transferred it to the SGS.. ha. nope! that's one thing which doesn't seems to work on either iOS or android can only attach pictures & vids ><
then this will blow the iphone4 out of the water
stock JH2 ROM, no mod of any kind

Ya I get about 4-5MB down and 2.5MB up here in London Ontario.. both on the rogers network and the Bell network.
you know the funny thing is
my cell phone is faster than my home high speed broadband from both rogers/bell
i'm actually using both of them for load balancing, yet neither of them gets dedicated speed like the SGS can get
at these amazing speeds video call is not a problem at all
dude thats not good.. LOL I have a 15Mbps with rogers with my home internet and get that speed all the time.... but 4-5Mbps with my samsung S is really good.. too... very impressed.. a buddy of mine has the Iphone3GS and he can only get about 1Mbps on the same network.
My previous phone was an SGS, and I recently switched to a badaOS and an iPhone4.
I have no experience of 3G internet over-the-phone, since my company (Voda) in Greece is a bit crap-signaled, but what I noticed for sure is that iPhone 4 has better wifi reception.
And, regarding 720p video, yes, iPhone 4 cannot play mkv files directly, but throwing an mp4 file doesnt need convertion. It directly copies it to the phone.
In general, I respect both companies, Apple for keeping standard quality of OS & hardware, and Samsung for making huge efforts to make the perfect phone. It is obvious that, with Galaxy S, Samsung made a huge leap towards ruling the market, which, I believe, will happen with its next device.
A little disappointed in my 3G speeds. only 3.2 Mbps up and 1Mbps down. Last FW was dedicated to 3G speed, I can't remember what I was scoring back then but it might've been about 2.5 Mbps

Singtel nowadays getting from bad to worse! Their 3G is becoming very unreliable nowadays, dropping connections like nobody's business.
So I know a lot of members here have 4G. I have experienced some 4G and have seen several videos and am just not impressed by the speeds. After some research on my end I found out just how fast WiMAX goes in other places such as Sweden which lead me to believe this is a Sprint issue for sure. Are you guys happy with your 4G speeds or do you want them to increase? Personally Sprint said something like 10x faster than 3G but I have only seen 2-3x faster.
Also - crazy story. The WiMAX network in Sweden was shut down after many people started complaining about headaches after it was turned on. It was reported that people some were hypersensitive to the WiMAX frequency that it operates on.
I'm ok with the speeds I get; however, I'm disappointed with the lack of consistency. In St. Louis I get anywhere from 2.5-3 Mbps down, but just across the river in Edwardsville, IL I was getting around 9 Mbps down on the tower on campus. I know the network load can't be that heavy in St. Louis to have such degraded performance.

Do you have any links to this? I'm doing an industry analysis on cellular telecommunications and another on Sprint and this would definitely be good information on external threats.
Wow... Yeah here's the link:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1038429/swedish-town-blighted-wimax
I had another video or something... I forget where I found it originally but that is pretty much the same thing. Anyway as far as I can remember WiMAX has been permanently shut down in Sweden pending further investigation last I heard.
That is nuts. I know there's a Wal-Mart in Granite City that has a radio right outside its doors and the hundreds of people that pass through there each day have no problems.
I have two things to ponder on this:
1. Since this is such a small town in Sweden, I wonder if they just haven't acclimated to having cellular freqencies in their area...which I find unlikely.
2. Or, since this IS such a small town, they don't want the WiMax radio making their quaint little town "ugly" and orchestrated a phony mass effect after they started the services. I wouldn't throw this out of the window...small town people are crazy.
You have to think of how strange of an anomoly this actually is. Millions of people have been exposed to these frequencies for years, and for such a small sample of people out of the population congregated so densly together is really really really odd. I mean, the people who developed these systems have been exposed to WiMax for years. I would think any negative effects would have been brought up by now.

You bring up good points. The only thing I can think of is how much data is being transferred using WiMAX. While my knowledge is not sophisticated enough in wireless technologies to make an accurate assumption on what exactly is going on, I do remember that the WiMAX they had in Sweden was transferring data at ridiculous speeds - somewhere like 50mbits. Could the actual throughput speed cause a variation in frequencies or is speed not a factor in it at all? That is the only thing I can really think of...
What I also know is that Sweden has LTE technology and they have had no complaints about that - on a side note lets not dive into conspiracy theories. Also, Sweden is very technologically advanced when it comes to internet and wireless technologies. My friend gets 100/100mbit connections to his home for $15 USD. *rage face*
I'm ok with the downstream speeds. Upstream could use a boost--I mean I can almost hit 1 up with 3g.
My biggest issue is how poorly wimax penetrates buildings. I can regularly get 10/1 in Astoria if I'm on the street. Walk 20 feet into a bar and I'm only getting 1 down. Meanwhile I can get 1.5+ down on 3g without moving an inch.
Yeah, I'm going to recind my second statement. Apparently there is 3% of the population that are sensitive to EMR as per the WHO.
As for the throughput being an issue, I don't think this is the case. The EMR is there regardless of whether or not it is in an active data transfer (think of it as your wifi router at home, constantly broadcasting.) Then again, maybe I'm wrong, our phones as a mobile host may "wake" an idle tower upon request.
Just a few things...
In Sweden they are using 5.8GHz for their Wimax, here in the US it's 2.4GHz. The higher the frequency the more data you can pack within a single wave. The US has tighter MPE (Maximum Permissible Exposure) Limits. So here in the US power limits are lower. Wifi also shares part of the 2.4GHz spectrum. Notice you do not get that great range. Most WiFi units only put out in the range of 50-150mW of power. The standard antenna has about 1-2db gain(if you are lucky). Now on a tower the antennas they are using average about 20-30db gain, and transmitters (depending on the height) from 10-100W. In essence Wimax is WiFi on steroids. Until more towers go online you are going to have crappy reception. Unless the tower is within about a block or two your reception is going to suck in most structures. Another thing to point out, as your reception goes down, your transmission speed does as well (to not drop bits, and have to retransmit the packet).
Eh. I understand why people would want INCREDIBLY FAST 4G speeds... but honestly, I think our 4G is pretty good. There is nothing I can do on my phone that requires anything faster than what I get. I dont know about you, but I get pretty good speeds. I've downloaded 170MB roms for my EVO with 4G and I was damn impressed.

Yeah it's an Epic but I'm pretty sure the Evo get's the same speeds. I just never ran speed test on my EVO. This was inside a building in King of Prussia, PA.
So far I am not impressed. I also live in the St. Louis area. I've tested my 4G speeds in several areas around here as well as Kansas City and I consistently get between 1.5-1.7M download speed, hardly the 10X faster Sprint likes to advertise.
Don't get me wrong, the 4G is nice, but not fast enough to justify the battery drain. My browser is plenty fast on 3G and I can get a day out of my charge compared to 5-6 hours with my 4G radio turned on.
Not that bad for me in the Orlando area, note the signal strength.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Wow impressive speeds indeed. I wish they would figure out a way to get lower frequencies on these phones. I think that makes the biggest impact on overall speeds.
was getting 7-8mbps myself.
And i would go nuts over 50mbps. Not for phone, but for clear network. Have it setup atm, but only getting 3-5mps on it. Unfortunately the house i'm located can't get signal from at&t nor verizon, or any other dsl supplier. They blame each other for it too, if i call verizon, they say i'm in the at&t's area, and they should be doing it, if i call at&t, they say the opposite.
But yea, for a phone you don't need 50mbps, nor would you need more than 3-5mbps. Unless you are downloading gigabytes of torrents on your phone.
When I first started reading about Sprint's 4G network a long time ago I had high hopes for it. Sprint lit up 4G in my area months ago now (Twin Cities, MN) and after being able to test it now for some time I have to say it it's a huge pile of crap. Now I know it's a newer network and everything but it seems almost unusable. I have tried it multiple places around the city and it has been nothing but a disappointment.
Now I will say if you can get a decent signal and stay in one spot I will get some decent down speeds, 8-10 down no problem and of course the upload is capped. However I have tried it out going down a major freeway in the middle of the city (map shows excellent wimax coverage) and in and out constantly. Your better off using 3G while inside a car in my opinion since half the time it can't stay connected to the wimax network. We also use sprint data cards at my work and one of our guys has a 4G hotspot. I have 4G set to on and same thing in and out all the time around the entire city. I'm thinking about setting it back just to 3G since 4G is so worthless.
I can't tell you how many times I have tried to give it a chance and fire it up in random places around the city and it's a crap signal or it won't connect at all. It is nice when it does work but that doesn't happen very often.
I do get an excellent 4G signal at my house but since I use wifi there it's pointless not to mention the crappy upload cap. I always see people complaining they don't have 4G in there area and want it so bad. I really don't think they are missing that much as I don't find the 4G on my evo practical at all in real world situations. So I don't know if it's just wimax, bad coverage, or what the deal is but god it sucks.
I have not had a chance to try Verizon's LTE in my market but it can't be any worse then Sprint's pos wimax network they built here. Looking at the map it looks like verizon actually finished there LTE network here rather than leave it with holes but like I said I have never tried it so not sure how much better it actually is.
I'm just curious to what some other people think about Sprint's wimax network and doesn't even have to be in this market just overall real world use of it. I can hardly ever get a signal indoors on wimax when I'm out and about. I'm just really frustrated by it because I have always been happy with Sprint's 3G network for the most part but the 4G network is another story. I have read rumors of sprint going LTE but who knows what is going to happen. I laugh when I see the commercials for America's favorite 4G network, just remind me of everytime I try and use the 4G network it hardly ever works.

Yea I really don't think you are missing much. Maybe my market just sucks just trying to get some real world opinions of how usable it actually is. I don't think having to stand in one spot and not move to keep a wimax signal is all that practical. You should be able to hold onto a signal driving down a major freeway.
I don't even use it. There are some good coverage zones around here, but I can't be bothered to constantly be checking. And I sure as **** am not going to just leave it on.
I just turn it on every now and then after some flashes to make sure it's still working. Not even sure why I bother. If I lost my keys I wouldn't miss em.
For the most part, Verizon's LTE network will be more consistent than Sprint's WiMAX network. It's because of the frequencies used and nothing else.
Verizon purchased a large chunk of the 700 MHz band for their use and is deploying LTE on that band. Sprint and Clear use the 2.5 GHz band for the WiMAX network in most places.
The physics of electromagnetic radiation make the 700 MHz band superior for penetrating both man-made and natural features like buildings, cars, topography and flora, as compared with the 2.5 GHz band. Typically, as the frequency increases, the radio signal gets drowned out in a shorter distance and interfered with by more items. Very low frequencies travel forever, while very high frequencies like light can't make it past two thin sheets of paper.
The 2.4 GHz band is famous for its use by Wi-Fi devices and cordless telephones. WiMAX transmissions over the 2.5 GHz band are subject to the same types of things that attenuate your Wi-FI signal and make it weak in parts of your house: walls--especially steel or block walls, topography, trees, and even heavy rain! While WiMAX is a higher power transmission than your typical Wi-Fi, it still can't overcome the 2.5 GHz band's physics.
About the only thing going for the WiMAX band at 2.5 GHz is that it can carry over 3x the data per timeslice than the 700 MHz band.
What this means for us is that we should be able to maintain a connection to the LTE network in more places and through more interference than we can with WiMAX. How the network acts once we are connected is a different story, however.
4g does not have the same capabilities that 3g does in handing off communications from one tower to the next.
So when you move from one tower to another, you need to re-establish the connection. SO if you are on a train, in a car, or a skateboard, you will outrun the signal. I believe 4g towers cover about 2-4 miles.
4g is great if you are staying put. If you are moving and trying to stream or download files, you are going to have a problem. I do not know if LTE handles the hand-off any better.
My 4g kicks ass, check out this speed!

I only use 4G when I'm in a line or sitting somwhere waiting for something. The battery drain and inconsistency isn't really worth it. Also don't recommend it when your moving. But when you wanna watch a video or won't be moving for a little while, its the bees knees!
Charger not included lol.
I agree with everything you say TC. I am in Houston and the only time I use 4G is at work because its pointless to try when moving around the city.

I experience this riding on Amtrak NE Regional & SEPTA Regional Rail into work, its better in the car. On the train its a headache dealing with the hand-offs.
The NEC from Philly to New York has Sprint 4G coverage but not much use unless your train is making many stops.
Yeah, I quickly figured out the same thing the OP did. 4G is great if you are staying in the same area. Causes more problems than it solves when trying to stream music in the car. If the phone could handle the switchover with some grace it would not be so bad, but the loss of signal while it loses 4G and 3G picks up is a pain.
Uhhh.ok Stop Complaining WIMAX IS SUPERIOR TO LTE.at the end of 2011 or by January 2012 clearwire will be upgrading their Wimax to the new WIMAX Revision 2,this upgrade will make Wimax 2X faster than LTE. So just wait

Wimax is awesome. Just keep trying and when you get it, don't move (your body or the phone).
And make sure to use it to its full potential before it kicks you off.
Sad, but true. In all reality, many of us are covered by wi-fi at home and at work -- which for me at least is about 80% of the time.
I would hope that in the "rare" occasion that I would like to fire up the expensive beast during my commute to stream some high quality encoded tunes or a movie, that it would be a pleasant experience and not just 30 seconds of music followed by 30 seconds of stutter, followed by 30 seconds of silence, followed by a flashing dead battery warning.
We are getting closer to this "always connected" nirvana - maybe in the next generation. At least we will have the war stories of expensive data add-on bills (and soon to be caps), spotty coverage, and battery life panic to pass on to this next "always connected" generation....the same way the previous generation passed on their "had to walk five miles uphill to school each day, in their bare feet" stories.

I didn't know wimax couldn't do a hand off from tower to tower. Does anyone know if Verizon's LTE network can do a handoff or does it have to reconnect as well? No wonder I have wanted to through my phone out the window trying to stream music over 4G in the car. Is this a limitation on wimax or something that sprint just haven't got working yet? So even if Sprint went LTE it prob wouldn't help indoor coverage anyway cause of the bands they use?
Also has anyone tried Verizon's LTE network driving around? I'm so curious to see how it works in my market or just in general.
Sorry guys, just get really excited - we just got our 125Mbit connection with Virgin installed today, and their new router is 5GHz capable....and I wasn't aware that the One is 5GHz capable, so I just tried it out. To my massive surprise the download speed actually went past 100Mbit....on a PHONE. Am I the only person who finds it absolutely mindblowing that we are getting that kind of speeds wireless, and on something that fits in our pockets? Are there any other phones capable of this?

I expect apologies, it's not often that I am called a liar on the Internet, but when that happens it's usually by people who have nothing to prove their statements, like you sp5it. Shame.
Only got 60MB here on Virgin - but yeah - download speeds of 47260kbps+ etc.
I know the HTC One X & Sony Xperia Z all have 5GHz capabilities - so it's not limited to the One - I would guess that nearly, if not all, new high end phones have 5GHz capability.
It's great that it works - but boy do you notice a difference when you're out and about and stuck on 3G!

people gonna hate buddy, i have an ac capable router just got it a month ago, and i love it!! speeds are incredible. i have a 30mbps connection and im rocking all 30 mb lol
As others have said, there are previous generation phones and routers that had 5GHz capabilities.
Used my HTC One X on 5Ghz with virgin cable router , been on their 100Mmb tariff for approximately two years.
Agree that up and downlink via 5GHz wi fi gives impressive transfer speeds, even without ac capability

Just curious, what are these Virgin routers? Are they cable modem based? I have Time Warner and I get about 30mbps.
What is an ac/router?

What in the world does 5GHz have to do with this?
The Wi-Fi 802.11n-standard is capable of up to about 300 Mbps for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Some products achieve higher, the the initial N-standard was for up to 300 Mbps.
5 GHz uses wider bands and is less congested (because 5GHz still ain't that common and that it has plenty more channels to reduce interference) which should grant a tad better local performance and responsiveness. This isn't necessarily the case though.
See, the disadvantages of 5 GHz is that, being a much higher frequency, the range is actually worse than that of 2.4 GHz. Furthermore 5 GHz is also worse at penetrating walls and other solid objects (making the range even worse between different rooms).
Back to my point nonetheless, I believe the source of these speeds are routers using modern standards (N and/or AC) as opposed to the older G-standard (54 Mbps) rather than the use of the 5 GHz band.
tl;dr... 5 GHz might increase throughput a bit, but no doubt the same results are possible with the 2.4 GHz band.
EDIT: Don't mean to sound like a smartass, just thought since it seems several people here seems to be under the impression that 5 GHz will make your network speeds and all better with no downsides. Whilst this is true to some degree, it does suffer in range, especially though walls and objects (i.e between rooms).

You've got my support on this one, I actually understand what 5GHz means in terms of wireless bands and I was highly confused why people think it has anything to do with speed. I've gotten faster speeds on corporate internet on the regular 2.4GHz frequency.
That being said, nice speeds, OP, sounds like you're all set!
This is kinda strange. I just got an upgrade to my internet from Comcast. My download speed has increased a little bit, but I've never seen such high upload speeds. I just wish it was the other way around. This was done on my Nexus 7.

Perhaps this fix for the V10 would resolve your issue. I've used it with a noticeable improvement on my V20, and it alters the devices use of wifi frequencies so it may have the desired effect.
Also giving your 2.5ghz and 5ghz networks seperate names should also help.

Not sure, I have a HD990DS and it connects properly to my 5 GHz channel on my ASUS DSL-AC68U router
I can't see any 5GHz wifi networks either on my V20. I have different SSIDs for my 5GHz access points, and I don't see them at all, even with my phone up close!
I have a brand new V20 990DS, fresh out of the box, no updates applied (in fact, I disabled them as I didn't want to jeopardise getting root), on Android 7.0 software version V10c-TWN-XX
I don't understand how LG could have messed this up. Or other problems such as slow internet.
I may just keep buying the phone from different places and hope I'll end up getting a decent one soon.
I really like this phone with the duel screen and the DAC. One of the best phones I think you can get if the WI-FI actually worked.
Thanks Ben
well, this is odd. I only got my V20 yesterday and I couldn't put my SIM in until it was cut down; I got it cut down today and put it straight into my phone. When I got home, I found by chance that my V20 could now see my 5GHz band access point*.
I don't think I've done anything else that might have made it work, other than unsuccessfully attempt to root it. Is it possible that my phone didn't know what worldwide jurisdiction it was in so wouldn't turn on 5GHz wifi until it knew, which it would have found from the SIM?
I have one of these * Ubiquiti Unifi UAP-AC-PRO. Best thing I ever bought, ditching random dd-wrt boxes.

That's really odd! I've never heard that before. I haven't put a sim I it yet as it wasn't working properly, so I just got a replacement which also didn't work. I'll try that tomorrow and put a new sim in it.
Does everything work now then? I've heard people say that on some of them that the Internet speed is slow, is that happening as well?
Thanks Ben
I just compared speedtest app between my laptop (which doesn't have 802.11ac, but does have .11a/5GHz. My internet connection is 35 down, 5.5 up.
Laptop (64 bit linux) gets 32.3M down, 4.8M up, which is quite respectable
LG V20 gets 22M down, 5.1M up.
Xperia Z Ultra gets 28.6 down, 4M up.
I know speedtest results can vary a lot, I ran it several times on the V20 and it struggled to get much over 20M, yet the upload was as good as any other device.
On a hunch, I took the back off the V20 and held it a little more loosely, and it had no problem getting 31M down, same upload, so pretty good! I suspect therefore that it'd be worth looking for a replacement cheap back for the V20 that's entirely plastic!
Ok well that's really odd again then. If LG knew that the back would interfere with connection then why just why.
LG's quality control is really bad.
Lol. Nothing to do with QC, more R&D and engineering.
Anyway I think you'll find the antennas are in the head- and/or chin-pieces which are made of silicon polycarbonate (plastic) and therefore no barrier to signal reception.
That's what I thought too that the bumpers have the antenna's in them. But then how would you explain the 10mbps increase? Because it makes no sense at all from my current understanding.
Also have you seen all the posts saying that they've had bad Internet speeds usually getting around 30 while another phone is getting 100-200 etc? It's all surrounding the WI-FI module. That's a QC issue.
It's not that I don't like LG either, I've had an LG G3 for 3 years and have never had a problem. In fact I could have brought an samsung s7 Edge for the same price but liked the LG more.
the problem is that the tech bloggers who review phones go through various fashions. All glass phones. All metal phones. Thin/light phones. Super high-res displays.
as a result we end up with phones that are..
* fragile (all glass),
* have poor radios (mobile signal is poor, or wifi is weak),
* have poor battery life (too thin for bigger battery),
* have poor battery (lots of CPU and GPU power to drive high-res displays).
meanwhile, the tech blogger who had the phone for only weeks, or days, or even hours, has moved on, and doesn't have to live with the phone's compromises.
You think the OEMs manufacture phones to suit bloggers?

Changed my Speedtest from 20Mbps to 125Mbps!!
Can confirm that putting a sim card in the phone gets the 5ghz to work again but unfortunately it's slower than what it should be getting.
It's gets around 30 to 70 and is really inconsistent. It should be getting around 200 like some of my other devices.
I've sent this one back to get a replacement and hopefully that one works.
I've sent this message 3 times and and each time it got messed up
